Ideal for an evening stroll to relax the mind. A lot of governments offices & institutions are located inside the Batticaloa Fort at present.
the batticola fort was built by the portuguese in 1628 and was captured by the Dutch on 18 may 1638
Due to the upgrades done by the authorities, ancient looks of the location has vanished almost.
Portugese - Dutch Era Fort - Poorly maintained17 of us travelling together with Flamingo Lanka Tours visited the Batticloa Fort on 1st March 2019. Although the fort had been constructed by the Portuguese during the years 1622 to 1628, it had been captured by the Dutch 10 years later in 1638.The Fort, listed as a tourist attraction, now houses the Government offices. It is sad to say that this attraction that should have "Heritage Status", does not appear to be adequately maintained. The government offices within appear to be in dingy little rooms.Interesting episode, for an otherwise poor visit, was a pretty lady being filmed by a film crew.
An old fort in Batticaloa built by Portuguese, now modified into an official complex inside preserving the outer look.the remains are opened for tourist.. from the fort you could view the famous Kallady bride.
Most of the fort is currently occupied by a government offices. You can climb on the parapet walls and get a good view as well as a connon with a George reign insignia on it aimed at the bay area!

Masterpiece of a history but poorly maintained by the authority and publicGood view of various places in the fort
the fort was build in dutch government. very good place
Out of the many forts in Sri lanka, I think that other forts such as the ones in Mannar, Galle or Trincomale would be more worth it as you would get to see way more historic things and also including a guide explaining tremendous amounts of information about the historic past and the forts in which this fort doesnt.
This was Built by the Portuguese in 1628. Then Dutch took over the place 1638 finally it took over by British. Compare to galle fort this is a small one but almost same size of kapity and jaffna forts. This e a artificial moat protects the other two sides.

OLD DUTCH FORT - BATTICALOABatticaloa’s Old Dutch Fort was built by the Portuguese in 1628. It is actually called “Dutch” as it was captured by the Dutch 10 years later. It is a square structure with 4 bastions, bordered by the lagoon on two sides. Old canons can be seen. Nowadays, it shelters the offices of the District Secretary.
