Largo Infante Dom Henrique, 2440-109 Batalha, Portugal, Santarem
Vast Gothic monastery dating back to medieval times, constructed over a 150 year period.
One of the most beautiful monasteries that we have in Portugal! I love coming here and just soak in all that history and little details carved in stone! They really knew how to build things back then!
Absolutely SPECTACULAR 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟I risk saying is the most impressive monument in Portugal 🇵🇹No matter how many times I visit, it always fascinates me how beautiful it is.The whole architecture, detailed stone work, the colour glass windows, stories and legends 📖Mandatory stop and exploring the lovely village of Batalha !! ⚔️
Interesting architecture and story. The restoration work is fascinating and I am sure, never-ending. Beautiful setting.
Beautiful site to visit. Rich in history. Well worth the ticket purchase and to explore. A must see in the region!
What a hidden gem. Completly worth the side trip on our drive from Lisbon to Porto. The detail in the carving of the tracery and statuary that adorn the facade are exuisite. The interior is a marvel. Bonus is the little cat house in the parking lot to the north of the monestary.
...historical... breathtaking...outstanding! A MUST see 💕
Huge. Interesting archirecture, tombs, artwork.Good explanations inside about each and every item.€6 entrance fee.Batalha is very welcoming, with a free parking lot and very helpful staff (Yolandaat the tourist information.
Realy something you have to see❤
The Monastery of Batalha (built between 1386 and 1517is a pearl of late flamboyant gothic mixed with Manuelline style and is listed as an UNESCO World Heritage site since 1993.It is a shame that in 11OCT2022 it still does not have a full accessible route for people with reduced mobility. Its signage is old, with reduced content and deteriorated. The visit routes are not obvious and the amount of staff available is clearly insuficient. And I am not speaking about support for blind or visually impaired, deaf or hearing impaired or visitors with a cognitive impairment because this type of standard support in the majority of the museums seems impossible to achieve under the leadership of the current direction. The Monastery of Batalha is a site of great historical importance for Portugal and yet it looks untended, shabby and run with minimal effort, not respecting its heritage neither its visitors.
Beautiful building, try to come when the sun hits the Vitrage windows, its so beautiful
A phenomenal experience walking the grounds of this monastery. Everything is super well preserved and organized for tourist visits. The details and ornaments that you see take your breath away. There are people to guide you through. Renovations are underway in some areas but overall a grand feeling of times past. I wont walk you through history but would highly recommend to get a guide and immerse in the story. Very well spent afternoon!
Impressive, ornately carved monastery.Church was free to enter, monastery was 6 Euros.Cloisters and fountain are very beautiful. There is also a large room housing a collection of military items.Well worth a visit. The area around the monastery has some restaurants, cafes, gardens and souvenir shops.
Ms. Neila helped me to plan detailed trips from Batalha, Fatima, Leiria and Nazare. She is a professional tour guide informant , very kind and helpful and fluent with4 languages. She was mentioned in my tour guide book and it is true, she made my visit a peace of mind. Thank you Neila❣️
If you are into history and architecture, this is chock-full of things for you to see and appreciate. Beautiful Gothic architecture, stained glass windows, tombs, Kings, Queens and Knights...was a fun day out not just for sightseeing alone, but for the loads of choices in terms of eateries and lovely local handcrafted items in shops just outside the Monastery grounds.
Mixed feelings on this. We attached to a trip to Nazare, on a lark. We were surprised by the size of the church and the attached monestary. Both are preserved, in the Gothic era style, with some Moorish influences in the design. There is not as much adornment as you see in later styles such as that at Mafra. There are a few impressive areas in the “paid” section, including the tombs of João I and Isabella. So, for the history it is an essential visit, for someone only vaguely interested in history it is an alternate stop or skip.
Beautiful Monastery! Well worth visiting, a portion of it has free entry as well. Read up about it on wiki before you go, makes it very interesting!
Beautiful site that is well preserved. You can walk around the outside and visit the main church chapel for free. There is a small entry fee for the inner garden and other areas. Overall, a nice place to visit.
This is one of the most magnificent buildings I have seen so far. Both in and out.
Absolutely stunning. One of the most superb examples of high renaissance architecture. All the better for having an uncompleted section. They like to boast the highest ceiling in the world! Lovely cloisters.Beautiful small round side chapel where several kings are buried.Batalha itself, close to the monastery, also rather charming. Big plaza shaded by plain trees, with places to sit and relax. Good shops and restaurants.Plenty of parking. Not over visited.
The UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE monastery is a historically important place very rich in teaching and telling its stories. The whole parc area surrounding it is insanely clean and well maintained. There are decent shops and restaurant close-by. The monastery is impressive both in size and historical importance. It houses the eternal flame burning since 1924 and guarded by actual army guards, as it symbolizes the sacrifice of soldiers during WW1. what i didnt like were the gift shop articles picturing (see photoafricans in a distorted and primitive way, hence in memory of colonization (and dehumanisation efforts). Im not "woke" but its out of touch and thematically without any comprehensive relation to the monastery.
Amazing place to visit! Beautiful Monastery with a lot of history.Definitely recomend !
An amazing place to visit. An absolute must! Its so very important to keep and cherish these important parts of our history. We visited this place on my first visit to Portugal and it definitely did not disappoint. Mostly a tour to do on your own but their are some options to have a guide from Lisbon.
Awesome and very nice architecture of monastery. Huge church inside the monastery.
Very impressive and well preserved and maintained monastery and grounds of imposing gothic architecture. The towering pillars, aisles and niches and statues, around the main entrance and in the interior, enhance the aura imposed by the silence, even during visiting hours.
Impressive monastery, its less crowded than other historical sites since its outside Lisboa. It allowed us to do our tour at our own pace and truly enjoy the architectural details of this special place. Definitely worth a detour if youre going up North.
One of the most beautiful monuments in Portuguese history. Exquisite stonework. Always a must visit with the necessary time so that all history and detail can be properly appreciated.
Absolutely loved the monastery..Please keep some time in hand to truly appreciate and enjoy your visit. There is a ticket of 6 Euro per person but 50 percent discount for families.
Definitely worth a visit!
Amazing historical cathedral and monastery. Look up Portugals dope history before going. Do not miss the unfinished chapels, they are breathtaking.
Such history. Very impressive. They probably need more donation money to really maximize the treasure of the place. Well worth a visit for the beautiful architecture and interesting geometric design.
After visiting the stunning Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in Belem, we were totally impressed by the Manueline and decided to view all 3 UNESCO sites around Leiria (Batalha, Alcocaba and Tomarat once. Basically, the Mosteiro Batalha is smaller than the Mosteiro dos Jerónimos, but more or less similar and less crowded so that you may have a less stressful visit. The remarkable sign of the Manueline is its large, richly decorated cloister where you should pay attention to the incredible details. The special part of Batalha is definately the unfinished chapels, which leave you lots of reverie space. The visit tour is well planned so that you will cover all the important parts without taking a detour. There are also many free parking lots nearby and the entrance fee (6 Euro each or 15 Euro for all 3 sitesis really low.
Beautiful at night and during the day! The monastery is one of a kind and makes Batalha a very unique location. The people in the area is friendly and the options of cafes and restaurants is good.
Stunning monastery. A must see.
Very beautiful, gothic style monastery with an unfinished royal chapel, although in gothic style. I could not walk through the church due to it being leased out for "wedding marathons" because of the buildings beauty and desirability for matrimonial ceremonies. The mausoleum chapel with tombs of early portughese royalty at the SW end of the church was open and also worth a visit. Enjoy a cold Sangria at the Cafe across from the monastery and treasure the view.
Great place to visit. Not too big but worth the time and money.
It is too historical and a very good place to visit. It is so huge and beautiful art inside and out.
2022 May visit.Entry €6 adult. Student €3. Free parking just next to it by the sports field.I simply love this monastery. It was built to celebrate Castilian war win. Not only its cloisters are absolutely gothic and beauty, the unfinished chapel is one of the kind. No wonder kings and queens have chosen this place as their virtual grounds.Great self guided as there are explanations to and before every room.
A Monastery full of history and very well preserved. Totally worth the visit! The tumb of two Portuguese Kings are there in the two pantheons of the monastery.
Great place to visit. Nice cafe and shopping area just adjacent. The shops here had the best prices and handmade items.
Quite amazing that it was built in xiv and xv century, the precision and detail of the masons still very evident. Most amazing is the water supply system that is still operating. No machines!. It is a functioning church, performing weddings and baptisms and daily mass.Well worth a visit or two, then a nice lunch in one of to the many restaurants. ( go to the site and investigate guided tours)Enjoyed it.
This Monastery was absolutely amazing! The architecture varied from the three architects that designed and built it. It was quite an experience to walk through! My the outdoor unfinished portion of the church. I will definitely be visiting again.
Initially I was not too impressed. The church is beautiful, but so are many in Europe. What sets it apart is the fine, detailed oldest cloister part next to it. But really world class are the Capelas Imperfeitas. Not to be missed.
Great place to visit, you can see the monastery inside and out over a short period of time. It has a parking lot near it, so its easy to park.If you like any of my photos, check out my photography account on Instagram: @alex_kei__I love sharing these places with other people, and inspire others to see things from a different perspective.Thank you! Have a nice day :)
The Monastery is a Dominican convent in the municipality of Batalha, in the district of Leiria, in the Centro Region of Portugal. From the street you can see it and even if you dont enter, just take a 10 minutes stop so you can appreciate the architecture. Im not an expert but Is quite interesting for the eye and even an Instagram spot for the likes! 😅😂
Wonderful place, great church full of harmony. Mix of late gothic and middle renaissance style with some touch of mudejar style. This cathedrale is a good resumé of the combination of architecture that took place after the “reconquista”
Wow! The unfinished chapel light was beyond compare when I arrived. A beautiful experience overall. A quaint small town with easy parking close to the monuments. No hairpin pin turns downhill on cobblestone through small arches. Enjoyable, reasonable for the quality. Ask for Senior rate.
Lovely to visit. Especially liked the unfinished chapels. Small charge (6 euros for family ticket (with two under 12s)). Some interesting artworks in the cloisters
This Monastery was absolutely amazing! The architecture varied from the three architects that designed and built it. It was quite an experience to walk through! My favorite of all if the space was walking through the monastery grounds and most importantly the outdoor unfinished portion of the church. I will definitely be visiting again it was absolutely amazing to see.Make it out here if you can!
An amazing Gothic Church we just happened to stumble across by accident. Driving down a hill on the main road we saw the spires and glimpses of the carvings on the facade so followed the signs to take a look. The Church is located in a large square surrounded by coffee, gift shops/bars and a restaurant.Visiting this amazing place is like stepping back in time. The outside is a master piece of Gothic design. The inside is more understated but impressive.Sadly the cloisters were closed the day we visited but we were so pleased to have found this beautiful place by chance.
Full of wonderful history, I went on a sunny day so you could really see light come through the stained glass, definitely worth a trip if in the area. Entry was €6 which is fair for the size of the monastery. Parking was super easy, there’s a big car park right next to it.
