Basal - Restaurant in Missoula, United States
I had the Cobb salad with basil lime vinaigrette and it was outstanding!
Healthy, flavorful, and fresh! Basal would be our go-to breakfast/lunch spot if we lived in Missoula. We stopped by on our way through and each had a salad. Both were unique and flavor-balanced and also filling, having protein and grain. We also had one of the best espressos wed every had. Get the green smoothie as well!We also were admiring some of the cooking books near the utensil bar and got to talking with who I assumed was the owner. Very genuine person and interested in the art of cooking. He had some suggestions for books I should buy next to take my skills to the next level. We arrived at Basal hungry and left inspired!
Feel good breakfast. Broth, warm vegetable stir-fries, good coffee.
Their Cobb Salad is the best I’ve ever had.
I got the Chicken Caprese Salad to go, and it was delicious! The restaurant staff were very friendly
One of the only places that serves bulletproof coffee, and fantastic service from the owners. Can be confident the ingredients are good.
Excellent vegetarian quiche for breakfast, its even gluten free. Side of greens were fresh and crunchy with a very good dressing. One of the best Ive ever had. Wonderful service and nice location.
Such wonderful fresh flavorful salads. Great staff..
The falafel salad is quite literally the best salad I’ve ever forked into my mouth. And the bread that came with it was perfection. I could eat this everyday for the rest of my life.
Ordered falafel salad. It was delicious.
Truly the best salads around! Always fresh with fantastic flavor. The Brussel Sprout Ceasar is one of my favorites. And they have the most fantastic bone broth.
One of the beat salads if not the best salad I have ever had in a restaurant. The size of the salad is very generous. Thr ingredients are super fresh. The dressings are fantastic. And all thr other offerings look just as tasty! Couldnt recommend this place enough.
WOW! The brussels sprouts Caesar Salad was incredible and the portions are large and filling! The smoothies are delicious as well! The service was incredibly friendly and I look forward to eating here regularly!
Best salad option in town. Probably also, most expensive. Additionally, they have a great online order system, and equally excellent integration with Uber eats.
10/10 my first time going to a Salad BarTypically salad I would consider Rabbit foodThis would be upscale Rabbit food so much flavor.12 oz Bone Broth to wash it down 👍 10/10Drink was really healthyIf it was something I made I would have maybe added a little bit of Agave but thats just my preferenceSalad was a chicken Caprese +Bacon
Worth every penny. Everything is so fresh and paired well. The customer service is impeccable and the COMPOSTABLE takeaway boxes (and dressing containersare amazing. I love love love this place!
Ive gotten exactly 5 salads here in the past year. 1 was excellent, 2 were good, 1 was not good and 1 was terrible. Dont get me wrong, its a great place if you want to pay $25 for a salad that might be good, but even at its best, wont be $25 good. $1.50 gets you a pinky finger worth of avocado and $5 will get you a few miniscule pieces of protein.
Im glad I decided to try this place out. Definitely gives me more ideas of where NOT to go eat down town. Overpriced and boring taste. Go literally anywhere else for a better more affordable salad.
The creamy smoothie (blue versionwas absolutely delicious! The guy who took our order was so helpful and nice. Only reason for 4 stars is this place is beyond expensive!
Road trip and stopped in Missoula to have a look around. Found my way into Basal and ordered a ‘Bright’ smoothie and impulse added an applesauce bread square.Place was open/spacious; and staff friendly!
Everything in this beautiful, little place tastes delicious! The food is always fresh and they try to source locally and/or organic when they can. At least one of the owners is always working, and they are both so incredibly nice and friendly. The rest of the staff is really nice, too. The atmosphere is clean and spacious, and the energy of everyone working is bright and welcoming. I highly recommend eating at Basal, or even just grabbing a coffee or smoothie from there if youre short on time!
L M A O This is T H E W O R S T SALAD CONCEPT EVER!!! (Generously enough, not the worst place downtown!)Lets start with the overpricing vs the quality. FOR SALAD GREENS AT that!Paid $18 for a salad that didnt have enough portion and just tell me youre ABSOLUTELY kidding when I found out $6 was for COLD cut cubes of steak (I got 3 pieces! And it wasnt HOT!? What kind of joke is that?So realistically, its made for tourists to spend big money. Live local? Go buy your Salad greens at locally instead and make you own NY strip steak salad. Itll cost like 4x less than whats asked here for a depression salad.
Delicious salads with fresh ingredients and made with care. The staff was super friendly and helpful in making our decisions. Definitely our favorite restaurant in Missoula.
If you need, or merely just want a superb salad eat here! They have wonderful salads or you can pick you own. Also, a very good looking smoothie menu and they even provide a tea menu. Splendid.
We had the chicken caprese salad, the beef bone broth, and smoothies (bright, lions mane). The salad was fresh and mozarella just right. This is a terrific choice if you are looking for healthy, organic and simply good nourishing food.We are on a road trip and stayed at the Residence Inn. For a rainy day, with the restaurant being within the hotel premises, it was the perfect spot!
Love that there is a healthier option downtown, but the salads are overpriced and underwhelming. What runs for $17-$20 should probably be around $7. There is very little protein, and what is there is cut into tiny cubes that get lost in the salad. The rest of the vegetables/toppings listed are small and sparse, and the croutons were soggy and under-seasoned. Pretty bland flavor profiles overall, even with dressing. Would rather buy a bagged grocery store salad kit than purchase here again.
This is exactly what Missoula needed. My office is downtown and I was getting bored of the same menu all over town. If you want something fresh, that hits the spot every time, go to Basal. The staff, and the owners are always friendly and welcoming, and serve by far the best tasting coffee on the strip. Also, their bone broth is absolutely incredible. 5 stars all day long.
This place would be great for those who love the taste of grass and leaves for completely over gouged prices. Salads are 15-20 dollars. For Lettuce. The smoothies are seven dollars and are among the worst tasting smoothies Ive ever had the displeasure of trying. Poor liquid consistency. Tastes like a bag of turmeric and ginger. And then add the prices. Not too surprisingly the people occupying the spaces at tables were very visibly elderly and wealthy. Which isnt necessarily a bad thing just not the place for a regular dude who est regular food
After several days of traveling rural roads/towns and eating lots of ski lodge food, we really needed some greens in our system. Since other reviews said Basal had great salads, we stopped by. Basal hit the spot! Ordered the smoked salmon and Cobb salads. Greens were crisp, they home make their delicious dressings. It came with delicious homemade bread or croutons. I also ordered a gluten-free parm & chive cornbread because it looked so good and it was. I’d come here again!
We ordered takeout during pandemic conditions. The salads werent bad...they were just disappointing. The ingredients were excellent quality, but it seemed like they were just sort of dumped in a box and put in a paint-shaker. So glad I didnt order an extra $0.75 piece of bread...the ones we got were miniscule (as in fit-inside-a-toilet-paper-tube-smalland really unsatisfying. I had a salad with smoked salmon, and the handling of this delicate ingredient was savage at best! For a $20 salad, I guess I expect some finesse and respect.
Soup of the day, Curried Local Squash Soup and a Mediterranean salad! Fantastic! The reviews don’t lie. Excellent food, top notch friendly service! Highly recommend this place. Will come back.
Delicious food, great portions, and super clean and trendy on the inside. BEST service ever, super nice employees. They ran out of the soup I ordered, so they gave me a cup of soup for free. I will definitely be back!
Yayo yum! Everyone say frittata! Good smoothie.
If youve ever thought a salad was boring or just "diet food" I highly recommend going here, every dish is delicious and unique! I never thought I would be raving to my friends and family about a salad but Basal has changed the way I thought about having a healthy, nutritional bowl of delicious salad forever!
A must if you’re in Missoula! Fresh food, the chicken quinoa plum salad was bomb! The owners are local and made us feel right at home! The interior is spotless and bright, beautiful facade, great location!
The Summer Bounty was really fresh and the staff was incredibly friendly. Ate here 3x during my visit because it’s such a great option for a vegan diet. Pro tip: add avocado! Also, when are you expanding to Seattle? 👍😍🥗
The chicken cherry quinoa salad was one of the best salads we’ve ever had, and the chorizo breakfast bundle was both tasty and filling. Mocha was really great too.All employees were wearing masks properly, and they have good COVID19 sanitization practices: cleaning menus, a system for when to clean tables, spacing, A/C unit was off when not needed, credit cards not handled by employees during payment, used silverware is compostable, etc.
Fresh ingredients.Wonderful flavors.Friendly, wholesome people there to compliment the best salad in missoula. I can never go back to a mediocre Cobb after being spoiled by Basals perfectly crafted medley of greens and homemade dressings. Absolutely worth it every time!
Missoula - I have found it! The salad place weve needed and wanted. From the moment you walk in, Basal is beautifully designed with a wonderful minimalist aesthetic. They have a great selection of bottled beverages and the perfect amount of pre-designed salads to choose from. The salmon nicoise was absolutely dynamite. I cant wait to work my way down the list trying others and taking advantage of the build your own option. Not to mention, the owners Julie and Taylor are so delightful. You feel welcome from the moment you walk in. After moving here from Austin, TX I was missing creative and delicious places to grab a salad or sit down for lunch. Basal hits all of the marks and exceeds them. Only downside? Ill be putting a lot of miles on my car driving from Evaro to downtown to get my next Basal fix. Im hooked!
Put this restaurant at the top of your list! Best meal I have had in days.. clean, creative, and delicious! A treasure for the wandering soul, wander in here, and find a delicious taste a gastronomic delight! Local ingredients, and choices to tease your palate w delight and full your belly w delish. RECOMMEND!!
Perfect! Tasty and interesting fresh salads, homemade bone broth, GOOD vegetarian options and espresso bar etc. Quick lunch service, but not inexpensive (11-15 bucks per generous portion). But what would you expect from local grass-fed beef etc?
Before Basal came along I wasnt a salad guy. Ive been totally converted now. Every salad is exactly what a salad should taste like. Tons of individual flavors that work so well together. The breakfast bundles are also delicious. The best part is, the they have their very own personal blend of coffee from the best roasters in town (Drum Coffee). Their espresso drinks and drip coffee are all amazing and youd be hard pressed to find baristas that are more knowledgeable anywhere in town. The owners and employees are all warm, welcoming and friendly.
The first time I came here I was searching for a great cup of coffee... success! Second time I came here, i took the employees recommendation of the seasonal smoothie... amazing! Right now is the THIRD time Ive come in, searching for unique, perfectly blended flavors to crave in the future (I got the Mediterranean orzo salad), and they nailed it. Like, Im blown away by how good this salad is. Ive had three really great experiences here and I highly recommend coming here for all the things they make that make you feel GOOD!
Bone broth was great! Salad on point, space is warm and inviting.
Nutritious and healthy food for a wonderful lunch or dinner. I had the smoked salmon salad which was marvelous. The greens are all fresh and delicious. The employees are very helpful and happy to help. I talked to the owner, and she was delighted to ask any questions I had and even small talked and I truly felt she wanted to be there. They have composting and recycling there which makes me ecstatic to eat there! I am so lucky we have small businesses that care about organic ingredients and sustainability in Missoula. 🌿
I just ate a salad there. I absolutely love the decor. I pretty much dont go out of my way to eat salads unless its the only thing offered. But I really enjoyed theirs.Random fact, they have purple and orange cauliflower. I had no idea that cauliflower could have Willy Wonka colors. It had paprika on it. It was delicious.
Amazing salad but mine didn’t have avocados like the menu said it would, either way it was filling and great. The staff was super kind, the only downside is that they don’t feature Black Coffee Roasting Co. which is a staple in this town, I’d love to see them consider offering BC. Will be back for salads
Good food, but nothing special. Not much in terms of atmosphere. I dont really have any need to go back, but wouldnt argue if someone wanted to take me to lunch here. I think $17 is far too much to pay for a pretty average salad with very little protein. I had the kale BLT salad and it was good, but I could make the same salad at home in about 5 minutes for $3. Not worth it for me. Staff were very friendly!
YUM!! The steak salad is delicious and the bone broth has great flavor. Im already looking forward trying another killer salad on their menu. The staff is top notch! Excellent customer service, personable, and happy. Cheers to another local business in town!
Great salad and coffee. The smoked salmon salad is incredible. Thick heavy foam on the cappuccino. Perfect cup.
