A working 1870 railway roundhouse with historic locomotives, interpretive displays & regular events.
Not a polished museum but Its a must for a real train fan. We have been a few times and a family ticket is very reasonably priced. My 2 year old was running round amazed by all the choo choos . No doubt we will visit again as there is often something new to see. Would recommend.
Great day out for any train enthusiasts my son loves this place.
Very nice place, lots to do, kids love running around and looking at trains. Went back to Halloween event which was nicely decorated and little extras dotted around for everyone, volunteers and staff are really kind. It is definitely worth a visit!
I had a thoroughly enjoyable visit to the centre back in August. The place is really coming on and becoming a worthy attraction.
Hidden little gem 2/3 hrs spare go have a look dont have to be a train buff bit of something for every age There is a charge for entry so check that out before you go (all helps the upkeep and pretty much all run by volunteers)
Had great day out safe very helpful nice cafe and well priced grandson loved it
A must place to visit if you are a train geek. Lots of steam and diesel to see. The turntable is run every hour, there is plenty of information and lots for children. The cafe is good too with unpretentious food at low prices.
If you are interested in trains this is a great place. Brilliant displays, very knowledgeable staff and loads to look at. Well worth a visit.
Attended the August Bank Holiday weekend open day. A variety of traction on site. Deltic Preservation Society had members available answering questions. Would have been nice to have had a lot more trade stands in attendance, but I guess much like everyone else, group members are allowed to go on holidays so manning stands would be difficult especially during the peak of the summer holidays.
Great place to take family. Well worth a visit.
We attended the 3rd day of the weekend 150+2 Gala. I was last here about 18 years ago. Theyve had a welcome input of support from the National Lottery. My little one loved it, but necessarily needed very close supervision. The volunteer staff are super helpful and very well informed. The train rides were great fun. So, if trains, steam and built history are your thing its worth a trip.
Amazing place to visit would definitely come back for another gala, staff were amazing to talk to would definitely recommend this to anyone
A thoroughly enjoyable day when I went on Friday for the 150+2 celebration gala, highlights being 67007, 56091, class 37s, 50008 and 69003
First visit and really enjoyed it, some good work being done there.
Barrow Hill Roundhouse is a fabulous place. It combines the dedication of a group of friendly, knowledgeable people who love railway restoration with the unique historic architecture of the roundhouse. The site is well organised, has good vantage points for photography and gets better with every year. I thoroughly recommend visiting to anyone.
We went here on the spur of the moment as we were in the area with nothing to do on that morning. It was great! We saw a demonstration of the turntable with a train operating in the round house. You can also see the stored trains out the back, and the original Halt. Nice little outing for an hour or so.
Interesting building plus plenty of locos to look over. Shunting and turntable operation so plenty of action.Tasty bacon and sausage baps & cappuccino from cafe.Lots of friendly, approachable volunteers/staff.Enough to occupy train nerds for 4 hours.
Excellent place to visit. One of the best bacon and egg sarnies Ive had in a long while in the cafe. Great history. Good to watch a shunter being turned. All explained very well by the volunteers.
I enjoyed our visit to Barrow Hill. There isnt a lot to see, but for the price its well worth a visit if you are into trains.Several locomotives to look at. Working turntable every hour. Cafe had a good selection of snacks and hot food.
Interesting history display in museum area, many steam & diesel locos to look at. Not in action today, but hourly demonstration of the turntable. Volunteers working on restoring & repairing many locos etc. Had an ample well presented salad. Got to & from on bus 90 from Staveley (can get from Chesterfield also)
Good place to visit. Not to much there but still good if your interested in railways.
Had a great day out with my Dad, partner and youngest 2 children. Staff were so friendly, helpful and informative. My girls were both given a goody bag each too, which they were pleased with.
Great museum, plenty of parking interesting visit. Lot of diesel locos outside if weather good. Nice cafe with reasonable selection of food.Allow 3 to 6 hours for visit
A very interesting place to visit. Lots to see and really helpful staff. Even when they suffered a power outage they just carried on brilliant.
Really enjoyed it even though the cafe was shut and the Deltic locked away still lots to see
A real gem of a place. Feels like home to those who love the days of steam and railways. A working turntable lots of engines some working some not lots of information and memorabilia. Has a cafe but had closed by the time we got round lol. Staff friendly and helpful.
More if a workshop than true visitor attraction. Some public areas like the cafe and interactive room were grubby. One demonstration of the famed turntable didnt include a locomotive as the driver was having his lunch.
First time I have been here and was very impressed, highly recommend a bacon & egg sandwich from the cafe
After NRM and Shildon it was a little disappointing, but we must remember it is run by a charity who are doing a fantastic job, but most of the work seemed incomplete. Many projects with seemingly none completed! The breath of fresh air was the gentleman who showed us the workings of a Deltic and his enthusiasm inspired us.
Interesting well run operation attended during a “Rail Ale” festival. Short train trip down line
First time visit, staff friendly and helpful. Plenty of free parking. Has a cafe for hot snacks and drinks and a small shop at the entrance. M/F toilets including disabled. Best to check website for opening times, some weekends used for closed parties. Good information boards around the site with staff ready to chat. Relatively level underfoot but it is an historic industrial site. Easy to find with satnav and the postcode off the website, brown signs when you get near. Lots to see and family friendly with a trail for children. Dog friendly too. Reasonable charge on entry with membership options available. A great afternoon out.would recommend.
This is an amazing train museum with a working turning circle, there is lots to see and the staff are great. They have an annual real ale festival which had 350 ales to try, great live music, wonderful atmosphere, lots of food stalls and a free shuttle bus from Chesterfield train station. A must see if your local or visiting the area.
How have I never been here before? Barrow hill beer festival and the main band of Thursday night ~Jungle lion ~were excellent. Jules Holland next Saturday and Im away :-( . Not exactly city centre tho so book your taxi home in advance.
Great afternoon at the beer festival, as always, although not been for past 2 years!! Well organised with great music and good food stalls although expensive. Had fab liver and onions cob which was beautiful and a bargin at £3.50. Was good to get back there again, missed going!!
Great venue, old school railway charm.
A place where you can feel breath of the past on your neck in every corner 😍
Nice staff, and an interesting day out with just enough to keep young and old alike happy for an hour or so.
Superb, such a unique place to visit. A great selection of both steam and diesel engines. The volunteers were really friendly and had a wealth of knowledge and real passion for what they do. The cafe was really clean and the food was great. Looking forward to visiting again next year already 😊!
A good way to spend a couple of hours on a Saturday morning....As a couple of ageing train enthusiasts, we found this an interesting place which is very much a work in progress museum as opposed to a shiny polished one such as York. There were quite a few, presumably volunteers, working away on various projects, who are knowledgeable and were happy to share this with us.More diesel, than steam engines, many with clearly enough work required to keep these workshops busy for years to come....Seeing all the Deltic diesels provoked happy memories of the excitement of spotting that first blue prototype at Doncaster Station as a young lad...Plenty of interactive exhibits to appeal to children, the ones who were there on our visit seemed to be genuinely interested.Well worth a visit for all ages not just old train spotters...
More about the work and the workplace than just the locomotives like at York Railway Museum for example. Just wish it was bigger. Lots of Deltics! Good facilities. Really enjoyed it. Well worth a visit!
Loads to see, a lovely cafe, and got to see the turntable going. Cant believe we havent been before. Fantastic value for money, will be back.
Fantastic place to visit , seeing the last round house in the UK.Lovely history and trains.Fantastic staff
Went here for the Rail Ale festival. Brilliant. Over 220 real & cask ales + ciders. Live music from start to finish. Brilliant atmosphere great location AND steam engines all over the place. Definitely a place to come.
Absolutely amazing night out had by all..Craig was brilliant...non stop dancing.
Lovely day for any train enthusiasts, my 8 year old son loved it. Turntable moved while we were there, cafe and gift shop too
A great little hidden gem this one.Very easy to miss so keep an eye out.A very welcoming place with a great little cafe and some marvelous exhibits.Great displays tell the history of the place and there is plenty of "hands on" stuff for kids too.The staff there really have a passion for the trains and it shows. This place holds beer festivals and such at different times of the year so keep an eye out for them. There is potential for this place to have even more and be bigger than it is. Well worth a visit.Ch ch ch choose Barrowhouse for your next day out.
If you like your locomotives close up this is a great place to be! There is a good selection of engines on display including steam, diesel and electric both inside in the historic roundhouse and outside in the yard. As well as the preserved stock there are always a good number of "stored" locomotives on site. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and always keen to talk to young and old about the engines and the ongoing restorations. Definitely worth a visit.
Genuinely impressed by the friendly staff and the efforts that have been made here to make this accessible while they work to preserve so many trains. The roundhouse itself is an impressive structure and a great place to see the trains, and then there are loads more parked up outside with a good viewing platform. Well worth a visit, and we went on a non-event day, so I imagine much better then.
I went for the Rail Ale Beer Festival, so cant comment on it as a museum, but I was able to get right up to the steam engines and the place looks largely untouched since it was decommissioned. Regarding the Beer Festival, there were some fantastic beers and the staff were great but the entrance fee was a bit steep £7 in advance or £9 on the door. The beer tickets were £10 and prices range from £1.40 to over £2 for half pints, so basically you get 6 halves and a glass to keep for £17/£19.
Recently renovated, the roundhouse has a fantastic selection of locomotives, museum and access to the Deltic Preservation Society. Well worth a visit. On site cafe serves good quality food to kick start your day wandering around the steam and heritage diesel locos.
