Barreirinha Bar Café - Bar in Funchal, Portugal
I always like it here! They cook well and drinks taste good 😊 Its a place with spectacular views that everyone will appreciate! Bring sunscreen and sunglasses! The evening programs are also very interesting.
Nice Views, delicious food, good drinks! All in all a very nice place to have a nice lunch or dinner!
Great Bar - often hosting live shows including DJ sets - especially during weekends. Professional, fairly-priced, though deposits have to be paid for the glasses. Overall, would recommend 👍
Beautiful view of the bay, friendly, english-speaking service, decent prices. Good for a quick lunch in the sun, but I saw some pitchers of sangria at other tables that I’m tempted to come back for at a time later in the day
Stunning views of the ocean. Quite busy most of the time hard to get seats. The drinks are good with a broad menu. Food is decent. Staff are friendly.
Such a shame, I was looking forward to trying this place after reading good reviews. Its in a nice area, really chilled atmosphere overlooking the sea and right next to the Lido swimming area. The young female staff member was lovely and professional. We both got the Prego, I opted to have mine with egg and chips, the Mrs had one without egg and with salad.I had to ask for cutlery for her salad and the server seemed to forget, so I had to go ask again at the counter. The main let down was that the steak was really stringy/chewy which spoilt it. The salad also had some fresh salad on top of older non fresh salad.
Cheap/medium price, simple and tasty burgers, tasty lemonades
Great gin great hefe great aussicht great meal greetings from germany
Easy, casual place. Good food, good service, good music! Out of the immediate hustle ans bustle of Old Town.
Great view, nice people around, looks like one of the places to be in Funchal. Food and drinks are very nice with reasonable prices. No luxury but amazing view, also nice because it is a little out of the city center, so it becomes a little more relax and cool place to stay in the late afternoon or after dinner.
Would have been a 5* however our drinks arrived after we received our mains. The food was good, the staff were friendly, and the location was fantastic. This is basically chairs and tables on the pavement, right next to the sea front with the bar / restaurant being on the other side of the road.If you want a lunch time or evening meal, with a great atmosphere, this is the place to come.
Very good sandwich & Poncha, I recommended this place !
Our go to place at the end of a day. Good food and drinks, very friendly service, an excellent view and a DJ on Saturdays with some nice bossanova music. Walking down the stairs for a swim if you are to hot.
Good food from a simple menu. They make their own Ice Tea which is fantastic. Very reasonably priced and attentive service.
Barreirinha is a stylish spot in Funchal with a lot of locals and a nice seating area above the beach side. Very friendly staff and a nice selection of food for a regular warm all-year-evening on Madeira.
Tasty sandwiches and fries, good view. Nearly didn’t sit down here because the one male waiter/barman was extremely unfriendly and dismissive, but luckily we did and afterwards the two girls were kind and accommodating.
Holiday perfect spot for drinks and food, wonderful view, chill atmosphere , live dj music during weekend evenings till late in the night. Try the IPAs and gin.
"Barreirinha" little barreir, means just that!Situated on the corner of Rua do Asp.Mota Freitas/Calçada do Socorro, a mere 100m uphill & east from the stately historic fort of São Tiago - circa 1614 followed by the beautiful Igreja Matriz de Santa Maria Maior or Socorro right next door. It was here my parents got married in 1961 and because of my 1st visit with my mother & cousin(s), we discovered Barreirinha Bar café or BBC. We have since returned many, many times, because its that kind of place that feeds your soul!BBC, literally is a small cornered establishment, with a long inside family table, extensive draught line, bar rack & counter and side extension for busy bartenders cocktails. It spills over the pavement with 3 tables outside, next to each door.Highly in demand on the pavement edge to one way trafic!THE MAGIC, a mere 10m across the road, is where everything happens. As it is well positioned on the edge of the waterline next to a long low lined cement wall, above molten larva rock, with access stairs for swimmers delight below on the shoreline. Its open panoramic view of the horizon, sea, the Pontinha port with cruise ships and the colourful old town of cidade velha, brings absolutely joy. Quite uniquely situated amongst graceful old veteran big Oak trees. And to top that, the sun goes down West just behind the Pontinha wall, as the moon rises from the East in full glory.Very spectacular to see this motion in full dance! The amazing sunsets has attracted a fan club of ra sun worshippers, with myself included. It has created quite a stir amongst locals & visitors. So much so, that, finding an empty chair & table is rare during these peak moments. All about timing, but as usual, ask the friendly staff to reserve you one while you wait standing, upon availabilty.Or you can always sit on the bordering low wall & use it as a table for your drinks and complimentary snacks as the smooth DJ BOX plays.■The outside tables have umbrellas for most, although I love to soak up the sun.Smoking is allowed for & in these opened areas (discretion& the toilets are inside, not user friendly for the disabled due to steps!■ BAR - menu is quite extensive with a horde of delicious yummy local cocktails - freshly squeezed, stiffed, slammered, shaken, stirred or blended to the tune of "fruit of the loom".Their cocktails are freshly made & well balance in taste, portion & quality brands.I was very impressed! There are other choices too - like a bucket of bubbles champagne, juices, wines and yes draughts.Try the unique local craft Madeira Lab beer nicely chilled for these, pôr do sol (sunsetsmoments!■FOOD - menu is standard and well portion to price. Here everyrhing is made from scratch. So it will take time and patience is highly honoured as you sip on a chilling cold beverage watching cruise ships, motor yachts or the local Lobo Marinho (sealferry to Porto Santo, enter/depart!■THE BOX or groovey dj - plays music in the later part of the day under the shade of the veteran big Oak trees.Very talented djs that know their grooves & moves. Great added value to this chillaxing space!■Parking - right next to the tables, however normally full but continue uphill & take a left and there is a covered pay-parking with 2 floors on the right. Walk down the narrow road of Rua Asp. De Mota Freitas and you back here to BBC world of bliss.Overall this bar has superb sea, sun & harbour views, Food is great and the quality of beverages is absolutely freshly balanced, chilled and hits the spot. CC & cash accepted.15% tip - not included but at your discretion. They do their best to accommodate you as quickest, especially during peak hours. As you unwind within the old & charm of new, you will think of definately returning as I have, keeping the tradition of grooveyness alive! If this was helpful please thumbs up, ate já.
Very cozy bar, lots to drink on the menu
Best sandwiches! Service is a bit slow but very friendly.
Lovely little bar and café overlooking the sea with a warm welcome and fiendly service. Only stopped for a drink but would definitely eat here next time as the food looked very nice
I love this place! The food is always good, lunch, dinner, coffee, or just a snack with drinks. The brownie is sinfully delicious! The view and ocean breeze are both so enjoyable. On some nights they even have a DJ with such a cool vibe. I totally recommend this place!
lovely little restaurant and bar. the location and thus view are perfect, overlooking the ocean, and with picturesque buildings along the street. the staff were very friendly, kind, and very sweet. the food was good, nothing less than i expected, and the portions were perfect if not slightly generous. pricing is very reasonable and affordable! the place is filled with locals, as it’s above the public beach—you can listen to the soft echo of people swimming and laughing below the cliff or watch from above. it’s overall a really nice place to either eat lunch/dinner or just stop and get a drink/coffee and read a book, and/or listen to portugese around you, and watch motorcycles and vespas drive past.
Amazing views, fantastic cocktails well made, prego to die for! Well done guys!
Lovely place, staff helpful and delicious food until late, perfect place for drinks or food and to chill
Probably the best spot in Funchal! Amazing view on the sea, very honest prices and extremely good quality food ! I had started to really resent the restaurants over here, many of those I tried where unexplicably expensive.. like come on we are on an island in the middle of the Atlantic and fish dishes are more expensive than in London ?!! I had a few very good experiences (Olivia, Informaland Barreirinha is definitely in the top 3! The waiters are very nice and they smile ! This spot is always buzzing with locals which is a tale tell sign that it is authentic and not one of the 80% tourist traps on the island
This is a great little bar. Good location with fine sea views from tables across road from bar itself.Wandered in on sunny mid afternoon, midweek, late May 2022. Place pretty full, but couple just upping to leave so lucky to nab a couple of seats at table directly overlooking sea. Initially only wanted a drink, but one, became two, became three, became food. Couple of Corals for me before trying a Ponchos, and white wines for wife. There was a good vibe in the place and great if you are a people watcher. The serving staff in particular were diligent and efficient...a troupe of bright young things, always on the go.Decided to eat on seeing various dishes and portions being served to other customers. They looked and smelled good with heathy portions and good service. A glance at the menu confirmed reasonable prices around a decent selection (not haute cuisine, but good bar fare).Went for cheese burger with fries and a caesar salad. The taste confirmed the look and smell as delicious and portions basically did us for the rest of the day.The lot came to around to 25 euros so bargain.Even though this bar was well across town from where we were staying (Pestana Carlton, see my review on thatwe returned and would again. As well as location, not on tourist beat, but not too far off it...and along with the good food / drinks and prices...a clincher for me was the service. There was both enough staff and those there seemed to be a well oiled machine. Not sure whether we caught them on a good day but well done guys...keep it up and your punters will keep coming back.
Been before, pre-pandemic and coming back a few years later, just as good as remember, so chilled, great drinks and food.... gorgeous setting looking out to sea, at the top of the old town on the pavement terrace.
Great location overlooking the sea. Service was a bit slow but it was a bit busy so not surprising. Cocktails were pretty good too
Great view of the ocean, very good food and drinks. Highly recommended
Really nice relaxing place close to the old town, so perfect for a pit stopHad a cocktail and a beer. Beer was cold and the Strawberry Daquiri really well madeDidnt eat but the food coming out looked amazing..
Lovely place, during our 7-day stay on Madeira we came here every single day. Delicious coffee, great food and helpful staff. What more does one need?
This is a perfect place to chill-out with chill-out sound. Check for event dates! They serve draft beer, Pils, Malto and IPA f. e. Here I had one of the best Poncha on Madeira, Dont forget to try one.❗Old Fashion lovers - here is the place.Burgers, sandwiches, salads and more is offered, tasty. Enjoy.
Just past the fort is this roadside cafe with a large terrace area across the road. Sea views. Saw it a couple of nights ago when it was buzzing with young people. Burgers and burritos looked popular. Friendly staff. €1.60 for 0.3l Coral.
This place is great for a drink but not for food. It has a wonderful atmosphere with lots of locals it has lovely sea view and gets the sun in the early evening so is great to sit out in. We had a long wait for the table but no problem as we could get a takeaway drink. They operate a deposit scheme where you get money back for returning the cups afterwards. Great scheme but did mean we waited a while in the bar queue to return cups would be better if they had a separate counter for this. I had a chicken cheese burrito which was ice cold had never been heated up as the cheese had never been melted but as Id waited an hour for the food I didnt want to send it back. The chips were also soggy and I ended up leaving food which I hate doing but I couldnt eat it. We went back for drinks again later in the holiday as it has good vibes with a live vinyl dj on Saturday night.
This place has fab ocean views, very good food, burgers, burritos, snacks, salads and fries- came here every day on our shory trip! Great staff and friendly l9cal vibe! Highly recommend!
Great spot overlooking the sea. Enjoyable walk through the old town to get there and back taking in the atmosphere. Most tables are on the pavement across the road from the cafe and consequently service can be slow.
A couple of years ago this place had problems with very slow service and wrong orders and I have it 3 stars, Im glad to see those problems have been solved and its well worth the 4 stars today. Food arrived cool rather than hot otherwise it would have been 5.
Awesome place to watch sunset in Funchal, excellent hamburgers (Picante, spicyand DJ music (fri, sat 6pm-12pm)!! The place is often full of locals that is also good sign. Test poncha!
Super nice place at the water front in Funchal. Delicious poncha in all variations, good food (prego, burgers, french fries, …and it seems they also have good cocktails (didnt have them yet). You cant book a table, but at arrival you can sign up for a table and normally you dont have to wait too long to get one - in the meantime you can always grab some poncha to pass the time ;-)
Great spot overlooking the ocean on the edge of the busier part of the old town (east of the fort). Burgers, sandwiches, salads and Burritos are the main things on the menu, both the beef/bacon burger and bbq chicken were good. Good choice of Craft Beers by the bottle and a few on draft. Socorro brewed by Madeira Beer Lab made specifically for this bar.
Super location. Terrace with a stunning oceanview. Friendly, but slow service.
The perfect spot for coffee, lunch, beer or whatever you fancy. Dont expect quick service this is as laid back as it gets in a good way! Getting a table can also be a challenge but let a member of staff know youre waiting.
Nice location, very good prices and friendly stuff.Great services 👏Tasty food and also drinks. Can pay by card.
My go-to place in Madeira for the relaxed atmosphere and the best Poncha. The service is great and they have live shows and music. A place where you can find a lot of locals and where you are seated overviewing the beach.
Whatever time of day this very popular cafe is worth a visit. Perched on the edge of the ocean in Funchal it offers great food, drinks and views.
Nice place for a quiet drink, meal or coffee. Have been here a couple of times in the afternoon. Off the main drag, a very relaxed, unhurried vibe... Great views across the ocean too...
Lovely spot for breakfast, morning coffee or whatever takes your fancy, as the sun takes its place high above the waves below.Very pleasant service, delightful street next to a beautiful church.
Nice place to drink and eat, especially at sunset and evening. Exclusive view, very good Poncha and other drinks, Madeira wine, fries and other meals. It was my favorite place during a holiday in Funchal. Especially I praise one waitress lady who brought me my favorite flat white coffee even though the coffee was not in the menu. The staff could be quicker, but you forgive them for the other positives.
Great spot to hang out in the evenings. Came here from around 19:00-22:00 for sunset and the atmosphere was great. Food and drinks served relatively quickly even when at full capacity. Staff friendly and happy to help/accommodate requests. Cocktail selection wide and decently priced as well as your usual Poncha and local beer lists too. With a good selection of food there is something for everyone to enjoy here.
