Baring Head Lighthouse - Tourist attraction in Upper Hutt, New Zealand
Great day trip. Parking is well sign posted. Steep but scenic hike up the farm trails to the lighthouse and historic bunkers even higher up. Respect the farm land. Great views up and down the coast. The beach below is also worth an explore with great climbing rocks and lots of wildlife. Highly recommend.
Super cool ride. Rugged and wild. The goats along the way were fun to spot
An amazing place to visit. Amazing views on a good day. I cant wait until the lighthouse keepers buildings are turned into accommodation to rent overnight. Make sure you approach the door of the pump house as it automatically opens into a small but interesting museum and information centre. Well worth the walk.
A good days outing
Nice moderate walk to light house from car park
Very beautiful location, toilet facilities and one can camp but theres no water currently, so you need to carry in enough.
Beautiful spot and a lot of work going into its restoration. A gentle 3km walk - after a 500 m climb.
Took the wildfinder 4 hour rent a bike experience! Well worth the adventure! Fun times and beautiful views to take in!
A lovely walk and fabulous views. A credit for all concerned. An interesting history.
Good walk and view.
It was awesome experience going on track. There is enough parking space available besides bridge. There is toilet facility in parking. There are two ways to go to lighthouse but i took left side as it says it is main track. The track is with moderate difficulty but most effective factor is WIND. If wind is in your favor then its easy otherwise bit difficult at times. Well marked tracks, awesome views. The water looks cool from top. It is worth walking to the lighthouse for the view. It took altogether 2 hrs walk and half an hour rest on the top.
Baring Head Lighthouse was a replacement for the Pencarrow Head Lighthouse when it was de-commissioned in 1935. The Lighthouse itself has a height of only 12.2 metres. But is conveniently located on a clifftop on the main approach to Wellington Harbour effectively giving it a focal height of 87 metres. To get there, take the Coast Road off Wainuiomata and stop at the Signposted "East Harbour Regional Park" Car park with a bridge across the Wainuiomata River. If you have reached the Beach Access Car-park, you have overshot it.From the Car Park cross the bridge, and you can either walk up the vehicular road for most parts or choose to walk along the Main Track. It initially follows the Wainuiomata river. You reach the small white building with Red roof, which used to be the Old Pump-house. Then it slowly climbs up the hill. It is a gentle walk. Well signposted. Till you reach a plateau top. You cannot miss the Lighthouse from here. Plenty of sheep grazing and startled rabbits bolting around. From the Lighthouse, you can choose to do a loop by walking up to the Para Trig and WW2 Lookout Bunkers before walking back down. On a sunny day provides impressive views. As the crow flies, the Baring Head Lighthouse looks very close to the Wellington city, but is a bit of a drive when you drive to Petone and past Wainuiomata to get there.
Great views of South Island and southern tip of North
excellent ride. track is in good shape .
Awesome views, worth the effort. About a 3 hour return trip from carpark. The friends of Baring Head organisation are renovating accommodation that looks to be available in late 2020. Will be an awesome place to stay the night.Reach from either Eastbound or Wainui Coast (which is a bit closer but a bit more of a climb)Either way, it is definitely worth a look if you haven’t done it before.
On a beautiful calm day it is just amazing
Great view from the lighthouse but the path up wasnt as easy as it sounds online
Nostalgic feel. Restoration going well
Great ride on a warm sunny day with good views back into Wellington harbour
Cant access by car road closed
You might not be able to get to this lighthouse until the end of Feb. See the attached photo for details. For the moment you will only be able to get to the gate which is about 2 hours walk from the lighthouse.I also did not have mobile phone reception.
Very cool and a great coastal walk to get their
Its a great walk to do takes around 120 mins to get there and back from wainuiomata entrance. but well worth it you get a few different paths you can take to get there one goes past old army bunkers right at the top of the hill and you get to view of all of wellington harbor
Arrived 4:50pm today, Wednesday 11 Sept, only to find the gate locked.
Amazing
Great spot to check out
It’s a nice track for either a walk or for biking. It’s a must visit place but can face strong winds as it’s open mostly. The view is undoubtedly amazing.
Nice, light hike from the East Harbour Carpark. On a clear day is possible to see the Miramar Peninsula, Fitzroy Bay, The Tararua Ranges and the South Island. Only pity was that the lighthouse itself was surrounded by a fence when I visited.
Awesome day walk
(RantThe google maps listing states that the lighthouse is open 24 hours, but to my avail it was not. I arrived there at about 2AM in the morning to take some milky way shots near the lighthouse but was welcomed by a magnetic gate that was locked with no personnel around. I had drove all the way from wellington (which took an hour and halfand had nothing. Please visit during the day as it is confusing.
great view, worth a visit, Make sure you dont miss the turn off
Awesome bike ride. Nearly anyone can do this ride. I have two very bad knees, normally cant ride a bike. hired an E-Bike, it was even easier than walking.
Spectacular views. The hike is long and not entirely clearly marked through the path. But it is worth it.
Nice ride, great rugged coastline, cute lambs B-)
A lot of sheep all around
Great bike ride from Eastbourne. The picnic area is sheltered from the wind. Fantastic views of the coast and the South Island
Its nice place for adventure
Nice walk. But at rally nothing to do at the lighthouse.
Great walk on a sunny day. Advice would be to stick to the tracks and if there are cars oncoming (usually the farm ownersmove out of the way lol. Good plave for a picnic with a view.
Baring head is beautiful. Climbers can Boulder for free on the beach below.
Recently painted and historic buildings have been repaired. Well worth the walk. Stunning coastal views.
Great views and on a good day its possible to see seals.
Very remote and windy. What you expect from a lighthouse location. Excellent views of the South Island and across the harbour to Wellington.
Stunning in any weather. Well worth the walk or cycle ride. Views are amazing. Access from either Eastbourne or the Wainuiomata coast road. Public transport only on the Eastbourne side.
Excellent place for family outing
An exposed walk so wouldnt be great on a windy day. Need your sunblock. Beautiful views at the top. Youngest kid in our group was 5.
Great place for a walk on the coast
What a great day walk for the family. Easy going enough for even the least inclined to walk. Excellent views and lots of history
Ride the coastline from Eastbourne all the way around to Baring Head Lighthouse, easy flat ride with the option to continue over a small hill to the Wainuiomata coast road.
I had a Pleasant hike up to the baring head lighthouse in summer - Take a picnic as the views over to Wellington harbour and Eastbourne are fantastic on a clear day. Gusty (naturally). Lighthouse wasnt open when i visited - its fully automated now and as far as i know isnt open to the public.
