Bardiya National park is a protected area in Nepal that was established in 1988 as Royal Bardia National Park. Covering an area of 968 km2 (374 sq mi) it is the largest and most undisturbed national park in Nepals Terai, adjoining the eastern bank of the Karnali River and bisected by the Babai River in the Bardiya District. Its northern limits are demarcated by the crest of the Siwalik Hills. The Nepalgunj-Surkhet highway partly forms the southern boundary, but seriously disrupts the protected area. Natural boundaries to human settlements are formed in the west by the Geruwa, a branch of the Karnali River, and in the southeast by the Babai River.

Bardiya National park is the largest national park in the lowland Terai covering an area of 968 sq.km. The park situated in Nepals Western Terai was established for protecting the representative ecosystems and conserving the habitat of tiger and its prey species. Initially, a small area was gazetted as the Karnali Wildlife Reserve in 1976. At that time, 1500 households of the Babai valley were relocated outside the park allowing the vegetation and wildlife to flourish. In 1982, it was renamed as Bardiya Wildlife Reserve, and in 1984 it was extended to its current size. The reserve was given the status of a National Park in 1988. Greater One-horned Rhinoceros were translocated from Chitwan National Park to Bardia National Park in 1986, 1991, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2002. In 1997, an area of 327 km2 surrounding the park was declared as a buffer zone, which consists of forests and private lands. The park and local communities jointly manage the buffer zone. Together they initiate community development activities and manage natural resources in the buffer zones. An elephant ride provides a different view of the park as one can go off the main trail, Morning and late afternoon is the ideal time to go on a ride. Karnali river is the suitable home for Gangetic dolphin. Babai valley is a majestic place to visit where flagship Rhino, tiger, and elephant can be cited in the wilderness site.Climate: The park has three distinct seasons, winter, summer, and monsoon. Form October through early April, the weather is dry. The days are warm and the nights are cool and pleasant. From April to June the temperatures gradually rises upwith a peak temperature up to 45 0c in May. The hot sticky days give way to the monsoon rains in July that lasts until September.Flora and Fauna: The park offers a variety of experiences in its vast undisturbed wilderness. About 70% of the forest consists of sal tree with a mixture of grassland and riverine forests. Sal leaves are used as traditional plates in festival and religious offering. The park is home to endangered animals such as the Royal Bengal tiger, wild elephant, greater one-horned rhinoceros, swamp deer, and black buck, The other endangered species include gharialand marsh mugger crocodiles and gangetic dolphin. Endangered birds found in the park are Bengal florican, lesser florican and sarus crane. More that 30 different mammals, over 230 species of birds and several species of snakes, lizard and fishes have been recorded In the park area. In addition to the resident species, several migratory birds visit the park.Facilities: Museum and Tharu culture are available for visitors at HQ. Telephone and mobile phones can be used in several areas of the park. If you are traveling by private vehicle make sure that you have ample amount of fuel. Be advised to carry a comprehensive first-aid kit including medicines. There is a community health post at Thakurdwara near the park headquarter. You can spend your nights at the lodges in the surrounding areas of the park. These lodges provide service to tourists. How to get there: You can take a bus or take the flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. From Nepalgunj bus services are available to the park HQ at Thakurdwara during the dry season.

Very good national park.I hope they keep on protecting the nature and animals.
Beautiful Jungle. You cant review nature, it reviews you.
It’s a must place to experience the wildlife in the forest !!
The parks origin began in the late 1960s when some area of 368 sq kms were set aside as royal hunting grounds. However, It wasnt until 1982 that the Royal Bardia National Reserve was officially formed, and even then it didnt become a fully fledged National Park until 1988. The aim was to preserve the diversity of decreasing species, in particular the tiger and its natural prey species.A buffer zone and community forest were established around the park to try to reduce subsistence poaching inside the park by the local communities. Without so much human interference the diverse habitats inside the park have improved greatly.
We visited this place last month (2021-Janjust to see Bengal Tiger but unfortunately we could only heard Tigers roar but could not locate it. Thrilling place to visit specially walking through the jungle and view towers. We saw one horn rhino and the tiger (in the cagewhich killed a women on the Bardiya National Park Highway. From 1994 to 2000, hunters have been unsuccessful at poaching rhinos. In April 2000, there were 67 rhinos in the park, most of them resident in the Babai Valley. In May 2006, a reconnaissance survey was carried out in the Babai River floodplain, which revealed an alarming decline in the rhino population. Poaching was suspected to be the main cause of this decline. Subsequent surveys in 2007 and 2008 have confirmed the complete disappearance of rhinos from Babai Valley. In different habitats of the Karnali floodplain 25 rhinos were recorded based on direct observation and indirect signs of rhino dung and tracks. They were mostly congregated in the floodplain grassland, riverine forest and wetlands. In March 2008, only 22 rhinos were counted
Good times on a Jeep Safari through the jungle, even though we didn’t see a tiger. We did see a rhino and had a lot of fun driving on the crazy roads.

It is the largest national park in the terai area of Nepal established in 1988. It was initially established as Royal Bardiya National park in Bardiya district on the bank of Karnali River. Its very good to visit in the morning. Jungle Safari could be done either on Elephant ride or Vehicle. It feels very exciting to see different wild animals in the park.Cultural Dance are organized in the evening. Tharu Village tour also organised for the foreigners. National and International tourists visit during the New Years, Valentine days and other occasions too.
One of the best place to explore wildlife.
Wonderful to be here. One of the best national parks in the country - most things of nature left untouched - you get it when you are here.Though this park is famous for tigers, you might need to be lucky to see one or more. Rhinos, elephants and deers are common animals in abundance. If travelling by private vehicle, keep note of the strict 40kph and time card rule imposed in the national park highway.
Very good protected jungle where is the house of Bengal tiger, Asia Elephant, one horn rhino...
Bardia National Park is one of Nepal’s best kept secrets. Located in the Terai region it is Nepal’s largest national park and wilderness area, protecting 968 km² of sal forest, grassland, savannah and riverine forest. On the west side it’s bordered by the Karnali River and it’s bisected by the Babai River in the Bardiya District. The foot of the Siwalik Hills marks the northern boundary of the park. It’s not overrun by tourists and there are excellent opportunities to spot endangered species of wildlife. The king of Bardia is the Bengal tiger. The tiger population is slowly increasing and counts around 60 animals. But Bardia is also the habitat for the wild Asian elephant and the greater one-horned rhinoceros.
