Barabar Caves - Archaeological site in Sheikhpura, India
1 * deducted for poor maintenance. Unique, One of itโs kind & a must visit site of life time. Entrance is inconspicuous. There are 71 stairs to be climbed to reach caves. Once you reach the site there is a person, all in one, guide/keeper who will unlock a peculiar innovative iron gate & usher in into mystical man made cave out of huge granite monolithic rock appearing externally as a crocodile. Inside itโs dark & cool ( not suffocating surface so glossy that you can see your image into it. Scriptures & carvings are genuinely authentic. There are 3 large caves, one in the front & two at the back . There is a temple atop further high up. A ropeway is in planning phase to reach cave & temple. Better infrastructure & management expected.
Natures beauty and adventurous......but government is not looking after it....otherwise could be best destination for adventure and nature with 600+ big stairs climbing.....

Barabar Caves was made under the patronage of King Ashoka for the Ajivika Sect followers during 3rd cent AD. It was very good experience to cherish, one must come with their children so that they can get to know about our history well. People keen to know about Mauryan Empire & Buddhism should mark their presence here to know in-depth understanding of the time period.PS: one must came here with proper travel and food, water arrangement.

One of the very unique experience I have ever had exploring Indian caves of pre christ era. This one was way different because the way it was carved out 1000s years before and you will be shocked to touch and feel the inner linings of the caves. It was magnificently smooth. Truly amazing
The Barabar Hill Caves (Hindi เคฌเคฐเคพเคฌเคฐ, Barฤbarare the oldest surviving rock-cut caves in India, dating from the Maurya Empire (322โ185 BCE), some with Ashokan inscriptions, located in the Makhdumpur region of Jehanabad district, Bihar, India, 24 km (15 minorth of GayaThese caves are situated in the twin hills of Barabar (four cavesand Nagarjuni (three caves). These rock-cut chambers bear dedicatory inscriptions in the name of "King Piyadasi" for the Barabar group, and "Devanampiya Dasaratha" for the Nagarjuni group. Most caves at Barabar consist of two chambers, carved entirely out of granite, with a highly polished internal surface, the "Mauryan polish" also found on sculptures, and exciting echo effects
Ancient caves are awesome. My kids enjoyed a lot visiting them. A must visit for every history lover.
Ancient Archaeological Site, first Man Made Caves. 71 stairs to Caves from foot of the hill. Temple from foothill has more than 500 stairs
About 30 Km from Gaya it is located in the Barabar hill. Wonderful place to visit this is the first man made rock cut cave of the world built in Mauryan era at the time of Ashoka the great. Beautifully polished inner wall looks like a mirror and the echo effect of sound is just amazing. The place has rich history and a must visit place for the lover of history and nature. One should take the help of the guide, he is very helpful and is very informative. A day trip is recommended as there is no hotel to stay and the place is very lonely.
A very wonderful place to travel and spend some time. There also Patal Ganga . Views from upside are awesome as I posted and also from bottom it look very beautiful.
Mountain region if you want to go these please at least take water with yourself because the iron has present more and more iron. But a lovely place its attraction is caves and a god shiva temple. The place is from the time of ashoka when ashoka started supporting Buddhism .No any problem and not to worry about personal things because there is a police station and a forest department offices and a Navodaya vidyalaya and may more to explore

A tourist place of Jehanabad - Gaya district surrounded but mountains, beautiful hills and amazing sceneries.

Very picturesque. Away from the hustle and bustle of city. Perfect destination for a one day trip. Only an hour ride from gaya.

This place is very good place and this is a his all people will come and enjoy it has very good type of Hills and I think it is better for the natureBarabar hills is famous for rock-cut architecture. It is located at a distance about 25km from Gaya town. There are four ancient caves called Karan Chaupar, Lomas.I visited this place very recently and its truly a must visit picnic spot i would say. The only req is not to throw things here and there. Please maintain cleanliness. Nice place, safe.
Historical caves worth visiting, but not maintained by the government.there are mainly four caves in which three caves are one place &fourth one is some distance away lost in mountains(no roads leads to the fourth caves vishwa Karma caves u have to visit it on ur risk, but worthy to visit).since there is no directory, maps, boards or anything,so u have to visit it own.if u have a chance to visit inside the cave then u can see how finished marble touch it has,&some are also relfectory. If u have time then must visit temple on the top u will be thankful after visiting there.
The place is worth visit if you like to visit new things especially with your friends. Its very quiet. Hardly anyone goes here on normal days except for savan and bhaado of hindi calander. In these two months a fair is held..but thats not worth visiting.Dont go with your family on normal days as its too calm and you might feel unsafe being totally alone. But pay a visit with your friends with who you can eat, drink and have fun..
Historic place to visit in bihar...these caves are historic and example of brilint ancient indian people skills the built these caves just with simple tools during ancient times...but the finishing was amazing...inside caves are polished and shiney ..these caves are use by buddhist monks...we must save this place for our future generation to show them the greatness of our culture
Place has potential to be a great pilgrimage but due to lack of management this hasnt happened. Water on the top of mountain and management is somewhat lacking. Still the beauty of this place is unmatchable.
Historically significant place....place is among the earliest rock cut caves in India..it is more than 2300 yrs old...the place is more famous for the shiv Temple and shravani Mela among local which is organised every year during rainy season
Barabar caves are a set of 7 rock-cut-caves dating back to the third century BC. These are located on the twin hills of Barabar and Nagarjuni. These are also known as Lomas Rishi Cave, Sudama Cave and Vishwamitra Cave among the locals. Each of the Barabar caves, 4 in Barabar and 3 in Nagarjuni, are carved out of granite and feature two chambers each along with a highly polished surface, completely missing any kind of sculpture or embellishments.Barabar caves are also known for their architecture and these are the very caves which saw the use of the Chaitya Arch in stone for the first time. The inscriptions found in here date it to the Mauryan period. The inscription in the Sudama cave informs that the four caves on Barabar hill were assigned by King Ashoka to Ajivika monks in 261 BC. Another inscription on the Nagarjuni hill is of the grandson of King Ashoka, Dasaratha Maurya, which tells that the Ajivikas continued to enjoy imperial Mauryan patronage for long.
Quite peaceful and awsome place even after a long journey and so much of work i was able to go all the way to temple and after reaching there i feel totally relax no tiredness.Har har mahadev
situated around 26 kms from jehanabad famous for rock cut buddhist chambers/ rocks which presumed to be as old as 3rd century A.D. Four rock cut caves namely sudama rishi, vishwakarma, lamos rishi and karan chaupar can be seen here. caves have been carved from granite. local guides having good knowledge about the past history of caves are available at nominal rates. nice place for those who want to understand and explore history
Caves in Good condition. Its just the location and connectivity that is not good. You better get your own vehicle . Also, avoid late evening trip as the area is very remote. Good location and view from above but make sure you have enough time and stamina to climb the temple as its in very height and steep. It usually takes about 1-2 hours of time to climb till the temple. Make sure you have water and instant energy bars or drinks. Have a good time.
My all time favourite place to hangout alone or with friends. I love being in between mountains with lush green turf. Its getting famous, so government need to look after all the facilities and do more work to develop as well as handle the rush.A pleasant experience.
Awasome place for rainy season visit at least one time. Small hills small dam peacefull environment help to feel more energetic. the view the freshness is outstanding and awesome.
Bihar best places But here no good place to stop in night.Food not available in this place .No any market to buy something. But temple place is nice .
