Ban Leong Wah Hoe - Seafood restaurant in Singapore, Singapore
Prices increased quite a bit since we came last month. 4 dishes came up to $90, which is expensive considering the area and ambience. Meat and soup was nice, but veg was dismal. Don’t think we will come as regularly anymore.
Fuss-free place to eat really good zi char food. The highlights were sweet and sour pork, har cheong gai(prawn paste chickenand steamed grouper/sea bass. Har cheong gai was extremely delicious, served hot and was very crispy on the outside and juicy and tender on the inside. Steamed fish was excellently done to perfection. The soup gravy was very nice and soothing too. Sweet and sour pork was quite tasty well.
The prawn paste chicken is one of the best Ive tasted. Crispy on the outside and so juicy and tender on the inside. A must try. We usually takeaway.
To be very honest, as a Tze Char & hawker food enthusiast, their food wasnt that satisfying. Their dishes tasted very normal for their heavy prices, and I dont see myself returning to this Tze Char place again. Their claypot dishes were not flavourful, their pork was just not nice, their pork liver wasnt very soft, and their vegetables were also very normal
I have been there a few times bringing with me big groups. Today I was alone and wanted a quick dinner. Map showed the restaurant was not busy when I got there at 5.20pm only 20% of the tables were occupied. However they only allowed me to sit at a small table right outside the toilet. I explained that I would eat and leave in 20mins before things get busy but they said that was the only table I could have. I left and this will be the last time.
I enjoyed it very much. So good. If I come back again to Singapore, I want to eat here again.
Must get the har jeong gai. I had the hotplate tofu, kangkong and sweet & sour pork - typical zichar standard
Friendly staff. The place is also big so we can sit in a bit groups if 7 to 10 easily. Generous portion. The beef venison is probably our favorite.
I have been frequenting Ban Leong since pre-COVID times and I can say that the food quality, while has fluctuated between the years, my recent visit has reaffirmed that their standard is coming back. The har cheong gai is really a must try; other zhichar items on the menu are q standard.
Ordered the black pepper crab, prawn paste chicken, hotplate tofu, etcThe sauce of the black pepper crab was immense and thick. Rich in flavor. Prawn paste chicken was not bad. Crispy and nice.Hotplate tofu was a little disappointing as there wasn’t any egg as the base. They don’t out eggs. We did ordered the prawn balls but they took extremely long to come… I guess they forgot the order. We cancelled it in the end.Overall, service can be improved. Food wise, quite ok but I expected better as this is quite a famous stall here.
Ordered via oddle and the Fish came distorted with all the sauce leaked in the plastic bag. I have Informed the store and they said there will be a compensation.. Checked and followed up but no response. Horrible service.. Will not order again..
This place has been around for a very long time but its not what its used to be. Our group ordered total of 6 dishes but only one was good, the fried venison with scallion. The rest were average or below average. The hotplate tofu sauce is weird although the prawns in the dish were large and fresh.
bad service! called for takeout at 1115, the lady on the call say we can pick up at 12. we reached at 12 and only collected our food at 1245! asked them several times, and they say it’s waiting for the crab! notice that the other food has been out for a while. very bad coordination and the rest of the food is probably cold already.
All the service staff are new, altitude is so bad. Food is affordable tho but salty. Have patronised this restaurant for than 6 years, getting worse in terms of food and altitude.
Eat out with my buddy! A little too much for 2 person so we have to tabao the Mee Sua and Prawn Paste Chicken.
Went on sat dinner. Made a reservation prior as we heard its really packed on the weekends. And yup it was really fully packed. However surprisingly, the food was a little disappointing. We didnt order crab or seafood, ordered veg, fish, fried rice, hotplate tofu, baby squid, prawn paste chicken and hor fun. The food was just meh - considering how packed the place was, our expectations were quite high but was badly disappointed. EXCEPT for the prawn paste chicken. It was one of the best Ive had anywhere in Singapore. Juicy, crispy and just the right amount of prawn paste. 🤤Will give this place another go though and try their seafood dishes/ crab/prawns as thats what of the good reviews it has recommended to try.
Great crab dishes. Chili crabs is must have, butter crab a bit dry. Was expecting the buttery creamy kind but its nit that kind. Delicious nonetheless. Lots of other zi char dishes as well. Beef fried rice has generous portion of beef slices.
Wondering all the reviews are fake or true. Taste is bad, some seafood is not fresh. Crab is big, but meat is sticky to the shell. Many good review with chili crab, but it is just too salty….won’t have second visit anymore.Decent price but not worth with the quality of food.
Love the food there, quality is always good and consistent… Highly recommend the following dishes:- butter prawns- stir fried mee sua- deep fried baby sotong- prawn paste chilli- 油麦菜Crabs are super big and fresh, but the only grouse I have is that the chilli crab sauce is a tad too sweet & tomato-ey; I prefer my chilli crabs to have a bit of a burn…Otherwise than that, highly recommended!
Food is tasty. Service is good. Speed of food served is ok on weekdays but slower on weekends which is natural. However, parking here can be a nightmare. Very limited parking around. Not wheelchair friendly.
May 2022: Prawn paste chicken wings was good! The Shang Mein was below average. Recommend do not try. No umami at all. Didn’t even have an egg cracked in the sauce.
We have been eating this place for gathering, birthday get together etc... at least almost 15 years, but it no more taste the same like before we used to eat. In additional, the service staffs were also not providing a normal service, with waitress not knowing how to take a proper order and very impatience. I will not revisit this place anymore.
best crab ever, but crab up price very ex now, rest of the food decent but not the best.
Haven visited here since pre-covid and finally back here but feels like the standard has dropped. Crab is quite pricey but big enough (average 1.3-1.5kg), though i feel the sauce were kind of lacking. Prawn paste chicken and yam ring was still good. Claypot tofu was ok too. Also ordered a kailan and broccoli dish (forgot to take picbut it was quite normal and could give a pass. Kailan was old and tough, broccoli was still acceptable.Overall, quite pleasant meal but just disappointed that the standard drop. Might need to consider again if we should go back.
EDIT: Back again 4 months later, just as good ♥️A recommendation from an old uncle Grab driver. We drove 36 minutes to get here to give it a try... Anyone who doesnt give this 5 stars is kidding themselves! Yeh the decor is very simple and cheap. Yeah the service is not attentive (standard in Singapore). But damn the food is good and fairly priced. Fried chicken wings, kway teow, pea sprouts, black pepper crab and dry salt & pepper crab, pipis, washed down with a few $6 large long neck Tiger beers... WHAT A PLACE! Only thing we didnt love was drunken prawns but I think thats a preference thing.
Excellent place for crab. Tried the black pepper crab and the butter crab - both turned out to be excellent choices. Must visit for seafood enthusiasts
Ordered a Chilli crab takeaway. Fresh crab, cooked just right with a slightly spicy creamy eggy sauce, dipped with mun tao. Excellent meal to end the day.
Didnt order much as just 2 pax eating... the pepper crab was heavenly n almost every table was eating a crab dish! The ngoh nuong was excellent and so was kailan vegetables. Surprisingly good food! Shall be back soon
The drunken prawn is tasty. The king prawns are fresh. The veg is call You Mai Cai. The chilli crab, unbelievable, it is meaty and so fresh too.The price for the is $70/kg, it is consider quite expensive. But, you will feel satisfied after eating. Quite value for money.
Went there to eat once and ordered twice online. Food was ready upon collection on both occasions. However, it is abit challenging to make payment online (payanyone or PayLah!especially when you are using mobile phone to order. Pls consider having debit or credit card as a payment option.Food wise….😋😋 chili crab, sweet and sour pork ribs, prawn paste chicken, mee goreng (weekdays only)👎 HORFUNI prefer their mee goreng over the birthday noodles. Consider putting mee goreng in your weekend menu!Portion: The birthday noodles (medium sizecan probably feed 5-6 pax.
Been here a couple of times. I remember the chilli crab is not too bad, and has a reasonable price tag. This time since it’s just 2 of us, we ordered 3 dishes. Prawn paste chicken is excellent, claypot beancurd is ok and hot plate oyster is extremely value for money!
Food are good 👍 especially the chilli 🦀, pepper 🦀, drunken prawns, hotplate tofu and prawn paste chicken. Their service are terrible especially the tall China lady that I have ordered from her, she is rude. Ask her thing n she like not happy to answer u. I will give 👍 👍👍👍👍to the food & not their service.
There wasnt any crowd on a Sunday afternoon. The prawn paste pasta chicken was crispy and well marinated. The simple dish of dou miau stir fried with garlic tasted good. Hot plate bean curd served with prawns was done differently from the usual one in other zhi char stall that is cooked in brown beans paste sauce. Over here, the egg toufu is drench with sauce that is normally served with chilli crab. But my family enjoyed it nonetheless. Just to note the difference. The steamed sea bass was fresh and cooked just nice. A decent size worth it $32 price for a family of four. The drunken prawns was served in a claypot filled with tang hoon and herbal soup. Importantly the prawns were of reasonable sizes and fresh. Together with 3 drinks, we spent $92 for a good lunch worth coming back.
Been there a number of times. I wouldnt say the food is fantastic but I redcon if you looking for affordable seafood zhichar place. This is the place but is so Ulu and Cant be seen on the main street. If noone brought you here before, you wouldnt even go. I mean unless after dinner you want to go see monkeys or hiking lol.So the food is of zhichar standard. Service is quite fast. Popular dishes are crabs, har cheong gai and some unique food that many others dont do anymore such as claypot pork liver, lamb. For that matter, this is one of my fav stall. Yes some places have but the price is quite high. So we ordered a total of 5 dishes with drinks and the bill was $143.
One of the best tzi char stall around the area with long queues on the weekends. Must try their prawn paste chicken which is one of their specialty. If u are a fan of petai, remember to try their sambal petai with ikan bilis too! Totally would recommend everyone to come here!
One of the pincer of the chili crab I ordered is not fully cooked, but the staff insists that it is. Take a look of the photo and decide for yourself. The rest of the dishes were decent.
We were there early evening and didnt have to wait to get a table. As the evening progresses, the place get pretty crowded. The service was not lacking inspite of that. There is a wide variety of food you can order from the menu. Prices are reasonable. We ordered small portion of those items in order to experience wider variety of food. We werent disappointed.
It has almost been a decade since I last ate here, used to feel bigger, but then again, Ive grown a little bigger🤣Anyways, the food was absolutely amazing, the crab, the youtiao and the mantou, my personal favourite which somehow got onto my plate before I took the picture😍🤤Spacious, comfortable environment to eat in, suitable for any group to eat at. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It gets quite crowded after a while and I was lucky enough to arrive before the crowd came in😂
The dinner was fantastic! The crabs are fresh, so are the clams! The service staff are attentive. Come early as its gets crowded easily with fewer opened tables, because of the measures.
The servers were rude. Not willing and brush away questions. Food tasted more on savory type. Seem that no sweetener was added. Pricing is ok.
Rather expensive. Overall tze char taste is ok only average actually but not much "wok hei".. food is a bit salty. certain food portions are small even though already ordered large portion. Crab taste is ok although size is bigger but not meaty. The sambal kang kong was disappointing
Great value for money zhi char. Service was prompt, food was delicious. Go for their crabs - they will wow you. Take a grab as parking can be challenging during the peak hours on a weekend.
Good 煮炒 Zhu Chao place, seafoods are good and price are reasonable. Service is fast and lots of tables available. Beers and soft drinks are available. Taste are excellent and fresh. Good place for family dinning.
The food is good, the staff were friendly and helpful. They even took the initiative to provide cutlery and simple "entertainment" for my young child in the form of cardboard and a pen to scribble with. Always enjoy eating here and I bring all my foreign friends here to have chilli crab without fail. Love that we can even make a reservation online.
A very very good Tze Char restaurant. Highly recommended. Their Sri Lankan crab is highly recommended. I had plain steamed whole crab, which requires the crab to be not only fresh but also well kept in clean water fountain. They passed with flying colours. The crab was very tasty, and remained flavourful even when cold (if the crab is not of top quality, the "fishy" smell and taste would start to appear when the crab turned cold). Oh, and their La La fried bee hoon is also highly recommended! Their La La are so fresh, tasty and juicy!
Used to come here for crabs years ago. Certainly was not as crowded as before. Ordered stir-fried glass noodles, they were tasty, tasted even better with the sambal chilli that was provided at the side.Crabs, they didn’t have female crabs unfortunately. So settled for a tasty male crab. The sauce was just too sweet for me, certainly not what it was before. The fried buns were a good compliment, but didn’t help that sweet sauce of the crab.Hahahahaha Maybe it’s time to look for another crab place.
One of the best chilli crabs - we ordered a 2kg crab and despite being huge in size, the meat was still sweet to taste and the chilli gravy was great - not too spicy and most flavourful! It is more on the starchy side but it didnt bother our palate for our family. Steamed pomfret was good too, especially the "soup". Fish meat was just slightly overcooked though, but still nice. The prawn paste chicken wings are very good here too, super yummy! Price came up to $284 for a family of 6 with two seafood items - reasonable and good value!
Old sch shop layout with a sense of 80s nostalgia, good food with generous servings of ingredients. Prawn paste chicken wings are crispy without too much flour batter like other zichar stalls.
Good food and nice place to hangout with in a group and with friends. Usually is crowded. So would expect a wait for you table, go early before you get hungry. Seafood and Zhichar had style for the usual kind kind of dishes and they taste great. There is beer avail e at the location. Nice to go with the food. Thee is also outdoor seating if you preferred.
Super crowded today. Visited here today with my wife. Despite being a weekday its full and got to wait for a while. This shows how popular is the place.Serving is very fast despite packed w customers.Food wise the Chilli Crab is a must try. Chilli sauce taste just right. Not too hot nor sweet. Crab meat is fresh and sweet. Wanted a bigger crab but not available today. The fried buns are bigger in size as compared to other restaurants.Vegetables are fresh and nicely cooked.Hotplate Toufu toufu is not hot enough, but the prawns in it are big and fresh.
