Lovely place in the city to shop around, explore, visit museums and just hang out. We stayed till the evening and there were random events going on all over the place.Pretty immaculate vibes 👌🏼

Its nice place to gather around the evenings. The restaurant areas are all around it, so no need to worry about the food.

An equestrian statue of Croatian national hero. Pretty average stuff. There are hundreds of statues very much like this one all around Europe, and the Americas. The square where the statue is located bears the name of the hero as well.

A must stop while visiting Zagreb. This is the heart of the city where I recommend to make sure to stop by day and by night. It has something special. This is definitely a magic place, where if you allow it, you can see the time stop for a moment.Despite being in the capital, this square is just "the right amount of crowded".As well, often you have concerts and events, so you can feel the "heartbeat" of the city even more. Out of the square, you have multiple streets flowing out, where you can find many shopping options and as well as restaurants and caffes.Just few steps away, you have as well the local market where you can buy fresh, local fruits and vegetables. As well on the other side of the square you can find the art park with street art wall paintings.The main coffee place, from the square unfortunately is not the best place in terms of quality of service and food, hopefully they improve for the future.

The most famous square of the city, full with people, restaurant and clubs around the area. Usually here they have big music, food events and etc..

A lively square on the lower part of the city. Next to the tram. Other than that, many people were there playing music or selling their produce. A lot of shops and restaurants in the immediate area. I feel it can be noisy if youre staying in the hotels here but youll be right in the middle of all the action.

Its a great start to visit the old town of Zagreb. Beautiful parks, fountains and architecture. Today we came here to watch and listen to the Tianguo marching band and the Chinese dragon.

The statue of Ban Josip Jelačić is the work of the Austrian sculptor Anton Fernkorn.It was placed on the square in 1866, only to be removed by the communist authorities in 1947. In 1990 a public petition secured the return of the statue, and it was unveiled on October 16th – Ban Jelačić’s birthday.Originally placed facing northwards in order to symbolize the Ban’s defence of Croatia’s rights against Austria and Hungary, the statue now faces south to provide a better balance to the layout of the square.Situated just below the hillside settlements of Kaptol and Gradec, it has served as the city’s commercial heart ever since 1641, when it was designated as a place where fairs could be held.Most of the buildings around the square date from the 19th century, and display a variety of architectural styles, from Biedermaier to Art Nouveau and Post-modernism.

Beautiful place for tourists, a lot of food and souvenirs. But a big minus is smoking people.

Its a lovey and lively main square. Sometimes there is a market so you can check it out. Also, I saw some horses / knights around 11:30 am. Im not sure if they do this every day or not, however it was cool to watch it. In front of this square, many trams come and go, so its easy to move around.

Truly the centre of all activities concerning tourism in Zagreb. So many things are a shortish walk away.The Free Orange Tour of the main sites of the city start here ... they are so worthwhile. Likewise the Homelands War tour over 3 hours was extremely fascinating. Radiceva branches off the square & leads you to cafes etc.

Great story behind the statue, take the free tour if you are there, its onky 2 hrs and very informative.And once there check out the fountain that is there, it might look like a regular boring fountain, but if you know the story you will know the significance of it to Zagreb

This is where it all starts (usually. It feels like the heart of the city. We found all interesting city lanes and alleys finally meeting at this place.We spend some time just sitting here, enjoying the hustle and bustle.And we would often catch trams from here. A lot of shops around. Interesting restaurants and bistros. This is a must visit.

This is the place where you meet with family and friends. From there you can hop on a tramway or go for a stroll and explore the city of Zagreb.

The Zagreb main square dedicated to famous Croatian ban from 19th century, Josip Jelačić. He is one of Croatians biggest heroes. The statue of him is located in the center of the square. This place is most often gathering place of people before going anywhere else in the city.

A busy and entertaining main square, I could spend hours just watching people moving round, as this is well-connected through Tram I could visit many places from here.

Main square in Zagreb and a true center of the city. A popular meeting point for all locals, you either meet up underneath the white clock or next to the Ban Jelačić horseman statue. This is a really nice place to start one of your many adventures in the city. If you stand in the middle of the square facing the statue, to your left there’s going to be Zagreb’ and Croatia’ longest street, Ilica, also a shopping street. Behind you is park Zrinjevac and the beginning of series of parks called The Green Horshoe, built in the 19th century by an Austrian architect Herman Bolle, if you continue south down the Prague street you’re gonna end up at the central train station. Right in front of you is Zagreb’ most famous farmers market Dolac. Left to that is the most famous bar street called Tkalčićeva or popularly called by the locals Tkalča, if you follow that street and turn to Kamenita Vrata you’re going to end up in Zagreb’s old medieval town. To your right there’s one of Zagreb’ famous buildings, a new-gothic cathedral built by the same architect as the Green Horshoe. Most if the tram lines stop on the main square and can get you to different parts of the city. (11 east-west,6 west-south, 13 city centre-south, 14 north-south, 12 southwest-east, 17 south-southeast)

I was not lucky because i went to Zagreb during Eastern holidays. The city was almost dead, everything was closed, even all grocery shops. But place itself amazing. Very beautiful

Most recognizable square in Zagreb. Its the main square always full of life and people.Square with rich history.There are often interesting events. Take a brake and look around. Eat something, drink coffe on terraces or just take a brake and enjoy the moment.From there, you can get allmost to all intersting attractions just by walk.

Its in the main square of the city with beautiful fountain and big area. The area also host open market near this sculpture. Also, they have much seating in this area.It is also main tram stop of city surrounded by shops.

Main city square and a place for city events. Famous for its Ban Josip Jelacic sculpture.  He was a noted army general, remembered for his military campaigns during the Revolutions of 1848 and for his abolition of serfdom in Croatia.

While there no current Wikipedia entry for "Ban Josip Jelacic", I did gather information about him in the Zagreb City Museum. A governor in 1848, he abolished the feudal system, and United Dalmatia with the Kingdoms of Croatia and Slovenia.

This is THE square in Zagreb. In the center of the the most interesting and lively part of town. To the north of this beautiful square, the like of Polish cities, is the Dolec (Market), and the lively old streets now the main vain of night life, restaurants, stores, and bars. Also to the north, on either side of this main vain are both ancient towns of Gradec (on the leftand kaptol (to the right).South of the square you will find the newer settlement frames by the U shaped chain of parks and notable Civic life buildings such as the old city theatre, the old main train station (Glavni Kolodvor), the imposing Hotel Esplanade, and more.In the square quite notibly you will find the famous larger than life statue of governor Josip Jelačić, who many consider as a major influence in the establishment of a Croatian national consciousness, as well as the revolt against the exploitative feudalist system before 1848. His statue was disassembled by Titos komunist Yugoslavia, in spite of the socialist friendly anti-aristocratic idealism of Jelačić, due to the national symbolism of the figure considered subversive to the idea of unified greater Yugoslavia. The statue was reerrected facing the opposite direction to the original one as to not offend most of the people in the square by showing them the rear end. Turning the horse and rider around defeated the symbolism intended in having him face the enemy to the north.Also in the square is the reincarnation of ancient well where the citizens of mideval Kaptol and Gradec got their water. Today it serves as a reflective pool.

Ban Jelačić Square (Croatian: Trg bana Josipa Jelačića or Trg bana Jelačića, pronounced is the central square of the city of Zagreb, Croatia, named after ban Josip Jelačić. The official name is Trg bana Jelačića. The square is colloquially called Jelačić plac.

Nice central square, one of the main icon place and starting point to explore the city and all the other surrounding attractions. Not too busy but can get very crowded during events, celebrations and festival during the year.

we just call it simply "the square". its rather large and most beautiful when empty of more and more frequent week-long fairs or festivities. an old school gathering place of people and one of the symbols of sovereign Croatia, both culturally and historically.
