Ballindoon Abbey - Historical landmark in Ros Comain, Ireland
Wonderful place.
Lovely small ruin with well cared for local family graves. The place is clearly not for groups and must be respected as it is by the families of those buried there. There is a large family of Martins that fly from the ruin and the location at the head of of Lough Arrow is spectacular.
Beautiful ruin of XVI century abbey, surrounded by small cemetery. The location is truly picturesque and theres a path to the lake in the back, however very mucky. The place is on a private land owned by a farmer, not sure what are the arrangements but we asked and there was no problem walking through the gate. Theres a small space to park a car outside of the gate, enough for 2, 3 cars.
Interesting structure on the banks of Lough Arrow
Historical Ballindoon Abbey located on shores of scenic Lough Arrow. Sacred burial grounds that is in use to date:"Thread softly as you thread on my dreams"..mx
Fabulous Find. Architecturally a Gem
Great place to walk around. There is no parking places, so have to park at the side of the lane and cross a field to get to the abbey. Lovely views of the lough which is behind the abbey. Well worth the visit.
Ancient Abbey on the banks of Lough Arrow.
Beautiful......
Truly Special
Beautiful setting for old ruins, though a bit daunting crossing the field through a herd of cows with their calves!
Ruhig, romantisch, geschichtsträchtig.
BALLINDOON ABBEYSITUATED on the eastern shore of Lough Arrow, in the county Sligo, seven miles north of Boyle. It was founded by Thomas OFarrell, in 1507, according to the Annals of Lough Ce, which state, under this date, that the monastery of Ballindune was begun by him.1585. An Inquisition taken this year finds that the prior was in possession of a church, a cemetery and half a quarter of land of every kind, annual value six and eight pence, English money. From a lease given on March 3, 1591, it would appear that there was a Dominican house in Elphin, though it was not mentioned by any historian. We would infer from the terms of the lease that it was a recent offshoot from Ballindoon and dependent on it. More probably, however, the commissioners confounded a Franciscan for a Dominican foundation :1591. March 3, " Lease etc. ... of the monastery of St. Dominic, in the city of Elphin, one eighth of a quarter of land adjoining and a half quarter called Killvegoune, in OFlanagans country, with their tithes, the chapel or cell called Ballindown, in the barony of Tireraghe, in co. Sligo, one half quarter of land there with the tithes, possessions of the late begging friars of St. Dominics Order beside Ballindowne. In 1588, March 12, a lease had been already given to Richard Kindlemersh of the "monastery of St. Dominic in Elphin, etc., in the occupation of John Lynch, bishop of Elphin, ... all which were for a long time concealed." John Lynch was the Protestant bishop. Kindlemersh, having been appointed clerk of the markets
