Al Hamra, Oman, Şaḩam
Living history museum where locals demonstrate old Omani traditions in a restored mud-brick house.
One of the best activities in this area. The guide was included in the price for entrance and he explained everything:)
A must see! The explanations give a lot of insight into Omani culture and the place is really special. They offer you some products to try too. Worth every penny
Among the ruins of hamrah village, one house still stands and offers a local experience of living in this area. A tour guide will take you through the house and sit you in the kitchen to watch locals grind the wheat, and make bread. As well as oils you could buy for your skin. Later you will sit in a majlis and enjoy local coffee and dates while the guide tells you stories about the place.
Nice history
Truly amazing experience. Driving through dusty streets I entered an oasis with lots of palm trees. Went through that to find this “Museum”, out of the blue. A must experience for anyone who wants to see the rural Omani life style. Very well maintained and the staff was amazing. Thanks to the lady who ground fresh coffee for me and allowed me to take her pics.
The museum lies amidst old clay brick houses. We got an excellent tour through the premises. You can see how Omani families lived hundreds of years ago. From the roof, you have a great view over the quarter with its clay brick ruins and date palm plantations. Dont miss this when youre in Oman!
Traditional Omani aristocrats 400 year old house.
Might be very nice but 3omr / 7€ to visit appear too much.
Very interesting and nice place. We actually came here just by coincidence as we left misfat al abriyeen a bit earlier and were quite surprised about it at the end and think this area and house is a bit underrated compared to other attractions. At first we thought this is a very touristic thing when we read online about it and what can I say of course it is but it is somehow very authentic and you learn a lot about the culture and how omanis used to live. The guides are very friendly and helpful and sorry but thank you for the patience with all our questions! ;I think we asked around 1000 questions about the omani culture and their daily life. We learnt a lot and it was very interesting. Thank you! Entrance fee is 3 OMR.
Some nice insights in the local life in former times... The family maintaining the building and museum is really kind and very nice
Must visit if you are interested to see how local used to live.
Just great!Very nice peopleVery interesting
Amazing museum! The old town was abandoned 40 years ago. Walk the deserted streets, but make sure to stop here for authentic experience!
Very nice museum about the local style of living in the past. Some women demonstrate how to make medical oil, bread and flour in the past. Then you get a guided tour through the museum, Omani coffee and dates. We paid 3 Real per person. You can also buy the medical oil and a few other items.
Highly recommended to visit.Traditional house.
Very entertaining presentation of making traditional flatbread, coffee and perfume, which you consume for free. This takes place in an old very well maintained mudhouse with 3 or 4 floors and a personal guidance in English. You are also encouraged to try on Omani clothing and this all for an entrance fee of 3 Rial, approximately 7 Euro.SHOKRAN‼️
This old traditional house is amazing, every thing there take you to the old ages, the smell, the equipment, the people and the house design. Thank you to Al-Hamra people for taking care of there traditional treasure.
What I love at this place is you can interact with locals and eat what they eat , the place is alive and you will be able to feel how people used to live
It costs 3OMR to visit this old house and it is totally worth it to discover the ancient Omani lifestyle
This was the best museum we visited on our whole trip. You learn a lot about the omani culture and how they used to live or are still living. If you are nearby its definitely a MUST.
Bait Al Safah will be the best museum you will do in Oman
Wrecks…
Al-Safah House is located in the middle of the old neighborhood in the center of the Hamra state, next to the Al-Salaf Mosque, and it is considered a heritage landmark through centuries. Al-Safah House was built in the Al-Yaariba era by nearly 400 years. It is distinguished by its multiple floors, the height of its structure, the decoration and the inscriptions on the walls, ceilings and doors, and creativity in architecture. From 2005 until today, Al-Safah House has been a unique tourist attraction in the Sultanate, which reflects the Omani heritage and living life by nature and has become a global tourist destination. Some craftsmen, administrators and guides have been appointed to receive visitors as an old Omani house in which the visitor lives for some time, as if he is living in a time that goes back hundreds of years. Amazing!!If you visit misfat u have to visit this place ans other houses surrounded it.It show u how was Omani living before 400 years. U would be amazed with houses structure. For bait al Safa maybe they need to organize the decoration and other traditional things more specifically in third floor 🙈Overall, highly recommended!
Truly beautiful experience to walk around this large & spacious old house. It was really beautiful to see how they elders are locally fabricating artworks made of palm trees leafs.Although I have grown up in Saudi Arabia, a country with similar old houses & folklore, but this place is extraordinary & special. I loved every minute spent here.Take your time, and wander around all over the place. Explore, have fun, and learn about Omanis culture & heritage.
Nice house that turn in to a museum now. Climb up to the top for a good view of the village, taste some nice dates and have a cup of Oman coffee. Then see the demo by the staff showing how to make coffee, make traditional bread and more. Worth a visit, and all the tourists will stop by here usually
Truly Omani spirit, old heritage and traditional. May be more than 500 years old. People are loving here. Must visit for tourists or expats in Oman.
Very nice active museum and friendly show workers
We really enjoyed wandering around this lovely old house built in the traditional style of over 400 years ago. There are guides who will show you around included in the entrance fee and you can dress in the colourful traditional costumes the people wore inside. Great for photos! You can stay as long as you like and there are several rooms where you can relax in the traditional style drinking tea or coffee and eating dates. It is cool inside, quiet and relaxing.
I visited today. If you are interested in Omani life before 1970 and how people lived then this is the place to see it. It is great to see the traditional crafts being practiced and being sung to by Sayed Abdullah. I really enjoyed my visit and I am happy to know that there are places like this starting to come into existence in Oman.
Bait Al Safah is a small living history museum in a city of Al Hamra, Oman🇴🇲 . It is located in an old restored house in an abandoned village, and is about 400 y.o. A local guide takes you on a tour around the house and immerses you in an atmosphere of authentic Omani lifestyle. You are going to see how they used to make flour, their traditional flatbread (yummy🔥), coffee, argan oil, perfumes, baskets and even toys. All from natural ingredients 🌿 In the end, you are invited for a traditional tea or coffee with dates. A really great 👍 experience.
Eerie abandoned village with no known reason. Welcoming family museum at the entrance with kitchen demonstrations. Easy to get around
Highly recommended! Very interesting experience - locals demonstrate traditional bread and coffee making, use of incense/perfume, as well as how they lived on a day to day basis. You get to try bread, and they serve dates and tea as well. There is the option of purchasing small goods from them (perfume, incense).
Inherited house, very impressive how this family is revives its ancient past
Fantastic place off the beaten track, a must but be careful, not meant for tourists.
Interesting local house to visit. Guide/host was welcoming and fun. But be careful if you have a rental SUV - the streets are narrow (even if you follow the GPS navigation or Google mapsand its very easy to scratch the sides or get stuck with no way out! Better to park at the edge of the town and walk to the house just to be safe.
Beautiful and well preserved 400-year-old house in which the friendly local people demonstrate some of their typical household activities like roasting coffee, making bread and weaving baskets. Also has a huge range of artefacts from the village. Well worth the 3 OMR. Access can be tricky if you have a large vehicle so approach with care.
Very interesting, unfortunately entirely overpriced. Ended up paying 3 rial per person. Ask beforehand for the admission fee.
Nice to visit
nice to see but not that special. people left the homes when they got more money and left the old houses to rot...
Interesting place to visit and learn about the local customs.
the place dates back to 400yrs ago. it is half destroyed, half under construction. only met few people who were rebuilding a random structure (guest house to be). they invited us to take a look from the top terrace and admire their work. very friendly people.
Well maintained old house gives you a glimpse into the lives of the traditional omani village folk
it was an amazing experience and i realy would like to see more old houses to be restored in the old Harah.
Very Good historical place for visitors to visit , Give good grip on the old Omani culture, for non- arabic speakers I Recommended a tour guide
Thank you for this lovely place.. we are happy to found the place through Google map.. and Google reviews were helpful. What I love about this place is not just walk through the old house but a brief of how omani coffee is made with live demonstration.. as well on some natural oils and meeting local women who domenstrate cooking the Omani break and tasting the bread. Further more to actually have coffee..
A beautiful place where the age old arab traditions like bread-making, oil-making, etc. are exhibited to tourists through live museum. An ancient house built using traditional methods is well preserved to allow tourists understand how life was back in the days in the oases of Oman.
Must see it, there is a guide inside, who will take you a small tour inside house, you can eat dates and during delicious coffee and tea.
Very interesting place. Informative. You get coffee, tea and dates for free and see how Omany bread is produced and buy local products.
You can get oil for arthritis hand made just for you answer tea is excellent
