86, 4251 Plovdiv and the Valley of the Kings, Bulgaria, Khaskovo
Established in 1083, this Eastern Orthodox monastery features art, an ossuary & a cathedral.
One of the famous ministaries in Bukgary. An almost overwhelming interior. Almost all the walls and the cieling are painted.
Lovely monastery! Go there on a weekday - no crowds at all and you can walk around and feel the spirit of the place without the noise.
A very popular place, plenty of parking, restaurants, souvenir shops etc etc, the monastery is very beautiful, well worth the journey.
A trip to Bachkovo Monastery the second largest monastery in Bulgaria is a must. The nice walk from the parking lot to the monastery is accompanied with many stalls along the walkway where you can shop for honey, jams and different handmade items and crafts. Ten centuries of monastery history in addition with its cobbled courtyard, frescoes and central church are contributing to the amazing experience
Famous and beautiful place in Bulgaria. Worthy for visiting. Most of Bulgarians go there very often.
Amazing monastery... Love the feeling and the street before it.. You have tons of selection for traditional Bulgarian craftsmanship. Roasted nuts, gutting boards and souvenirs... Also amazing grilled kebabche and kiufte. Definitely recommend
Great site to see while in the area. It’s super peaceful and surrounded by some gorgeous scenery.
Very interesting place. Love big monastery with beautiful architecture.
Must see place, if you are around Plovdiv. The second biggest monastery in Bulgaria, dating back to medieval time. There are waterfalls around- a restaurant with one and a short 15 minutes trail leading to another even more spectacular one.
Its good of youre into architecture or god. Usually tourist shops. Needs an ATM.If you go make sure and take cash.
As a Pagan this place could be a little overwhelming. The building itself though is beautiful, as is the artwork. When you look at the surrounding hills and scenery you can understand why the Christians who built this feel so close to their God there.
A serene and peaceful spot, after running the gauntlet of the tourist stalls on the way up. Lovely frescoes in the church.
A vast monastery with museum and many interesting areas to explore. A must visit for every tourist in the region.
Beautiful place. As a non religious person I have found it super peaceful and amazing to explore. It is a wonderful historical site that everyone that passes that route should see. Beautiful!
A sacral place where miracles happen under Gods will. 💖
Beautiful monastry. You can also combine your visit with a lovely walk along the river. So serine and pretty!
Love it! Long history over 10 centuries, there is museum as well. Beautiful icons in the church. Pretty garden in the inner yard.
It is a religion old building. It is an important part of Bulgarian history. The architecture is old and good to be seen. It is one of the 100 historical places in Bulgaria to be seen.
Very calm and wonderful place. Worthy to visit
Second largest monastery in Bulgaria. Beautiful building with two churches - only the main one is open to the public. The church is beautiful with elaborate paintings and gold ornaments. Here you will find a famous painting (iconof The Virgin Mary - believed to be miraculous. The monastery is also situated in the mountains. Only a short drive from Plovdiv, the area offers some great hiking opportunities. You can visit any time of the year. During the hot summer months, it is a great escape from the heat on Plovdiv and Asenovgrad.
One of the three most famous monasteries in Bulgaria
Impressive monastery nice BazarParking fee 5 Leva.
Better than Rila Monastery. Highly recommended!
Beautiful place. A must if you come in Bulgaria. Lot of people.
Amazing monastery, Parking is just 2lv. You can take a small hike to see waterfalls, church and an interesting room(?With stone stairs. You should go straight when you leave the monastry. Dont go left to the parking lots. You will see the doors, then you will be able to follow the path.
Monastery in a beautifull scenery, full of spirit and peacefullness. Well maintained, for local circumstances. Also, inside the walls, there are many awesome things to see, including the church itself, musseum, some other rooms, springs and what I like the most, the ancient trees in the yard. Actually, there are 2 separated backyards in this location, both worth to walk around. Down the road, you have lots of merchants and craftman selling their goods. Also could be interesting for some people...
The monetary possesses one if the most famous icons in Bulgaria, the healing icon of Virgin Mary and Jesus. Definitely worth visiting and paying a pray.
Beautiful place that’s super clean and extremely well maintained! It’s so peaceful here and if you pay attention, you’ll be able to hear the birds! Very peaceful to just walk around. Make sure you see the main chapel as it’s absolutely stunning with all the gold colours, and you can tell they regularly maintain it. This is a very important place for Bulgarians, and I can see why! A must-do if you can!
Major Eastern Orthodox monastery in Bulgaria. Magnificent combination of Byzantine and Bulgarian culture. Very accessible if you are coming from Plovdiv to Asenovgrad. From Asenovgrad to the monastery I did hiking.
Its beatufiul with its nature especially the waterfall and the old monastery, but I do wish there were some more activities there for example hiring a bicycle or even a lift there that can take you up on the hill, other than that it was only to visit the monastery and the waterfall and yet the Bazar where you can find ecological honey and jams and have lunch or dinner maybe even a tasty dessert. Lots of delicious barbecue. There is a bus which comes from bachkovo - monastery to Plovdiv for 4 lev and can take you at least down the hill if you have finished the visit in monastery. For now the bus comes around 15.00 and at the moment there are no other buses. Otherwise taxi is available and it cost around 5 lev to take you down. Taxi numbers which I trust are 0331 61 61 or 0331 6162. Hope i helped your travelling plan for now. Enjoy your trip at the monastery its worth it.
Beatufil architecture, very nice place, filled with good energy. You can see a couple of very, very old trees which are protected, some animals walk around not scared of people and very friendly. There is small entrance fee only at the small museum and a parking fee 2 leva. There is also a market place on the strees with local, homemade and traditional stuff.
A must see in Asenovgrad. A precious historical monument located in an extraordinarily beautiful natural setting. Reaching there after a pleasant walk from the village, taking the narrow road surrounded by kiosks of souvenirs and restaurants is like a short movie on Balkan rural culture. Sunday is the best time to visit because the village becomes more vivid and colourful.
This incredible monastery is guarding ages of history within its walls. Beautiful architecture, a large and very well maintained temple, lots of rooms to stay in and lots of visitors at any given time of the year are what set it apart. Its a must visit place for anyone who enjoys the link between history, architecture, culture, religion and nature all in one spot.
Extremely beautiful monastery! If you are a tourist and you are looking for a destination to see - totally worth it. If you are looking for spirituality and spiritual people, you will have to dig more deeply. : Thats the way I see it.
This sacred place combines the beauty of the surrounding nature with the warm and welcoming atmosphere of one of the biggest monasteries in Bulgaria. It is free to enter and have a walk in the yard and the church. However, the small museum has a ticket. There are a lot of kiosks around offering everything from traditional Bulgarian dishes to BBQ for lunch, local dairy products, jam, nuts and even corn. Bear in mind, that the prices are little higher than usual, but the traders are open to discounts.A great idea for a family day trip - just 30 minutes away from Plovdiv. It is easy to reach by car and offers paid parking on site.
Very peaceful and quiet, a beautiful exemple of Orthodox monastary. Dont miss it. Free entry, pictures allowed.
Beautiful calm place of meditation and worship. Church with lovely icons. Surroundings also beautiful. On a Tuesday in October very few visitors.
A beautiful, quaint monastery with restored frescoes and a peaceful garden, just 30-40min drive from Plovdiv. There are two parking lots, one right off the main road that goes from Plovdiv to Smolyan from where a market street with lots of souvenirs and food starts; and one right outside the monastery walls. The parking lot next to the monastery has a 2 BGN fee for non limited time. Apart from the church within the monastery walls, theres also a church museum. From the monastery parking lot starts a nice walking path that goes through nice forests and reaches a big picnic spot. Bachkovo Monastery makes for a great weekend trip.
Very beautiful monastery! The yard itself is really pleasant to just rest for a bit, with beautiful water fountains and 100-year old trees. Make sure to find the peacocks located in a separate enclosure out of the way.The inside of the church has been renovated recently - the ceiling is particularly impressive, with sparkling gold inlays contrasting against the dark pain of the murals and icons.
One of the most beautiful monasteries in Bulgaria. A must visit if you are in Plovdiv or Asenovgrad. If you have the chance to be there on 15th of August, you can become part of the ceremony of Saint Mary. Many Bulgarians go there also for baptism celebrations or weddings. People who suffer from several diseases or want something very deeply decide to spend a night in the monastery as well.
Very beautiful place, unique - worth the stop on the was and visit it! Everyone was very nice and welcoming all the visitors with lots of patience to each one of them. We loved it! Highly recommended - do not miss!
Very beautiful monastry and worth a visit! Afterwards you should make a hike from the monastry straight forward through the gate in front of the monastry with the cross on it. Just follow the white yellow marks and you will encounter a chapel as well as a little church in the forrest. On the way back take a right turn after the abandoned houses to see some waterfalls. See my pictures.
The best monastery in the Rodopy mountain. Every time I go there I feel refreshed, full of positive energy and even my headache goes away. The small shops with handcrafted local Bulgarian stuff are also very cool, a lot of nice restaurants that sell BBQ and local food.
A absolutely gorgeous place!! We werent expecting it to be that beautiful. Not a single tourist around and the only thing you can hear are the birds singing.Definitely the highlight of our trip and really beautiful inside and outside.I only wish there was some more tourist information! As there is literally none.Entrance is free, however note its not allowed to go upstairs unless youre staying the night. (There are no signs and the guard doesnt speak English, so we had to ask some locals who had to ask a priest)Very recommended!!!
One of the oldest and most well-preserved Bulgarian monasteries from pre-medieval times. Enjoy the piece and quiet you can find here combined with an amazing piece of history and culture.
Magical place in the great Rhodope mountains! Many more hidden gems and mistical places at the trails in the area. Avoid visiting it during holidays, the crowd makes it not so peaceful as it should be!
One of the representative monastery in bulgaria, this season also many visitors crowed despite under the renovation. Someone those who interested in religion especially Christ or Orthodox, there is worth visiting here and take enough time.
Great surprise. The paints are extremely beautiful and we were astonished by the quantity and quality of the fresh paint around both chapels.Monks were very friendly and allowed us to take pictures. They even opened the small Chapel so we can visit it.Sadly the monastery is under renovation and the patio is kinda messy, but is still worth the visit. After Rila my favourite monastery in the country.
Worth visiting when youre passing by. Theres 2 leva parking fee. What I was really happy with is that there are a lot of food stalls on the way to the monastery. You can buy a lot of cheap, but great quality home-made products :).
Seemingly off of the mainstream tourist route, there seemed to be only Bulgarians at the Monastery when we visited. One of the most beautiful and ancient Orthodox churches youre likely to see. Well worth a visit.
