Babel at Babylonstoren - Restaurant in Noorder-Paarl, South Africa
Sublime experience - should be a six star rating ! I ate the lamb and my wife the sea bass both dishes were presented as artworks plated and the flavors and taste were just next level. We finished with the pannecotta and strawberry sorbet - and we drank their bitter lekker - which is indeed lekker lekker lekker. Well done to this team - they are a bright light in our society. I will definitely be frequenting Babylonstoren!
The setting was good, we liked it. Beautiful gardens.About the diner. We liked it, the waiter Keeghan(sorry man forgot your namewas very kind. Hard working man. The food was very nice. For us, it was a bit too much meat to our likings. As we are woke Europeans. We would love to have more vegetables. Im sure you can make more diverse dishes with amazing vegetables from the garden. The garden stands out in this topic, would expect more from the garden. Meat as a sidedish. The bread sour bread was very nice.
Excellent restaurant!!! All of the dishes was particularly delicious. We really enjoyed the food!!! The service was pleasant and kind and on our next visit to Franschhuek we will definitely return there! Recommended from the bottom of my heart!!!
We visited the place and spontaneously decided to stay for dinner. It was the best decision. The crew was very professional and charming and the food… the food was fantastic! Every dish that came out the kitchen was A feast . for the eyes and lust for the palate. Go eat there!
A truely next level experience. 20/10 breakfast and service. If you in the Western Cape you have to to go to Babylonstoren.
Oh my hat! We had breakfast at Babel. The food was AMAZING and the service impeccable. A special shout out to our waiter Jonathan who is truly exceptional. Thank you. And well done guys!
Farm to fork at its best. Went there for lunch and I wasnt disappointed. No need for meat, the veggie dishes are awesome.
Amazing!! The food was divine. Hands down recommend if you are in the area. The atmosphere was welcoming and homey, outdoorsy and slightly rustic, and just so warm and inviting. I would have to stay though that there were co-stars of the superb experience, the food and the staff. First to the food, we loved the celeriac and mushroom soup, the warm buffalo mozzarella and citrus salad, the risotto, the cauliflower with cheese sauce, the steaks, and the highly recommended chocolate torte. Be prepared as servings are larger than expected, but with risotto and others being so good we just couldnt put our forks down. They were very accommodating with us needing to know the gluten free options. As a side, while there were no kids in our party, there were are least three other parties there when we were there with kids and it appears they have menu accommodations for children. Now, the staff was out of this world, so friendly, so helpful, gave great recommendations and made every guest feel special. A special shout out to Trish, Margena (sorry if I misspelledand the chef that came around and talked to teach if the tables about the riddichio grown in there garden and humored me when I pestered with question about going lettuces in the area and what the local pests were. Fun fact, the biggest pests to their lettuce are the chickens. We really enjoyed the whole experience and will be recommending to our friends back home. The only other note would be that it is 20-30 minutes from Franschoek and we did have a little bit of trouble finding transport to and from at night. I recommend you plan ahead with a taxi for pick up and drop off. Enjoy and thanks to Babel for the wonderful time.
First time in Babel Restaurant and you have to go! It’s the cutest little spot with big amazing food for yourself, family or friends. The vegetarian options were presented with love and tasteful, something different in flavour. The service we received from our host, Muranda was so amazing and we will definitely be back again. She and her team made us feel welcomed and gave us an amazing experience and went out of her way. Thanks guys xox
So relaxing listening to the farm sounds and smelling the vegetation
Overpriced and overpriced. Wine list is ridiculously pricey, food is disappointing for the amount you pay and service is spotty. Walk around the farm, buy some veggies and leave it at that. Eat somewhere else
The best breakfast place in the Western Cape. Absolutely delicious food, with a variety including croissants, fruits, jam, juices, tea, coffee, cheese, yoghurt, and the traditional bacon and eggs. This is a farm/harvest to table feast and an experience that I would highly recommend.
We had high expectations based on previous reviews. Unfortunately, neither the food, the wine, nor the service met our expectations. It was a nice dinner though and we enjoyed the cellar tour earlier the day a lot!
One of the best wine farms in Cape Town for me personally. There is so much to do and see. Wine is really good. Food is absolutely brilliant. We ate at Babel restaurant. The service in general is amazing and everyone is so friendly. Almost feels like home there.
We enjoyed every single dish they placed on our table. Refreshing, succulent, surprising. A dinner at babel is an absolute treat and we hope to be back!
We had a birthday with about 18 people. The food and service was outstanding. Truly a once in a lifetime experience!
Maybe i am just common and not into sophisticated food. But did not enjoy the food. The sauce for the salad was nice, but the pie had a herb or spice in it which I did not enjoy. Then the dessert was awful. I think they forgot to put sugar into the ice cream and dessert. Environment is nice and staff friendly. But u will go to a take away after this
What an experience!! Be open minded and let your palette be the guide…the food was spectacular and the presentation and service was above expectations! Thank you for making our anniversary an even more special day! ❤️
Stunning venue with attentive staff and the most awesome food. Went for my daughters birthday and the service and whole experience was perfect. Classy and relaxed, we felt special from the moment we arrived until we left. I would definitely recommend the restaurant and the venue as there is so much to see and the venue and views are spectacular.
Well dinner in this supposedly 5 star place was a CATASTROPHE. The complimentary bread in the beginning was stale. I sent it back. The vegetarian sweet potato dish we each has was raw. The roast pumpkin my wife had was raw. We sent all of that back too. I had a sort of pumpkin risotto which was bland. We left. We are hungry. They charged me for what we could eat. Any decent place would have cancelled the whole bill.It is a disgrace. Now some grape spraying machines are howling outside. I can’t sleep. I’m about to complain.Tomorrow we have the German Ambassador to Namibia joining us but at another restaurant here. I asked if it had the same chef & was ready to cancel. Apparently a different one.Oh WOE.
Really brilliant meal with 15 others. Spectacular presentation with true South African flair and generosity. I was blown away at the fecundity of the garden vegetables and fruits on offer at the table. The variety is truly astounding. Friendly and efficient service and an unforgettable working farm environment. Lovely, lovely!
I would not recommend eating here after a full day of wine tastings. Dont get me wrong, the food is absolutely delicious. But I was too full by the time I got here to finish it! I hope the chef wasnt offended when I sent back my dishes only partially eaten. Everything was fresh and flavorful, I would definitely go back on an emptier stomach. I regret not being able to get dessert, which also looked delicious.
Exquisite location with delicious food, beautifully presented. A real experience
Marvelous experience, various activities wine tasting, olive pressing, soap making eatery, fruit picking and many more.
Loved the decor and set up. Simply beautiful!Very good service from all staff.Enjoyed the starter and the beetroot side dish and the chips. Awesome home made tomato sauce. The fish was nice but a little bland.Overall, happy to have had the opportunity to visit this restaurant. Been on my bucket list forever.
Best dining experience of 2021. We tried the Autumn menu. The fruit and veg was so fresh - all from the farm. The quality of food - along with the portions - were absolutely worth the price. The risotto was the highlight! Very excited to try the 2022 summer menu. Would recommend finishing off a day of wine tasting in Franschhoek with dinner at Babel - 10/10.
TL;DR: Incredibly refreshing, understated, seasonally aware and veggie-forward masterpiece of a menu offered up in the pastoral paradise of a vineyard. My husband and I happened upon Babel by chance (well, and TripAdvisor). We found the place after getting to our Airbnb in the area that afternoon and thought wed stop by on a whim. By some good fortune, they were able to seat us without a reservation. I was sold on the place before we even reached our table: we took the long way in, through the parking lot covered in leafy trees fashioned to looked like a vineyard, past the actual vineyards, a spellbinding fish tank, donkeys, and the occasional rooster or pheasant adding to the ambience. The sun beginning to set over the mountain range certainly didnt hurt the ambiance either. Our server, Trish, was upbeat and friendly as she walked us through their new and quite refreshing spring menu. I was singing Babels praises before our starters arrived thanks to the fresh bread, salted watermelon, and cheese/cracker/veg plate they brought out to our table. While we both very much enjoyed the lamb we ordered as one of our mains, Babel blew us away first and foremost with their vegetarian dishes: all works of art, especially the beet tartare and carrot starters. We also absolutely adored the wine -- although perhaps thats to be expected given Babel is located on a top notch vineyard and all. The only downside to our delicious dinner was the fact that we were both so stuffed we had no room for any of their three desserts, ranging from sweet, to bittersweet and savory. Judging by what we saw the servers carrying out from the kitchen, however, I wish we hadnt missed out!
Not enough stars for this meal, wine, service, and setting. Best veggies ever!
An incredible experience to eat there! Its amazing what they do with fresh fruit and vegetables!
Fresh. Vibrant. Seasonal. Tasty.Relaxed atmosphere in a beautifully maintained wine estate surrounded by fresh produce from garden to plate that will leave you salivating..love the colours on the plate and the feeling eating pure goodness.Excellent wine options as well as tea… really enjoyed our day spent @babylonstorenLooking forward to going back
From beginning to end the service and culinary experience was out of this world! I would highly recommend putting Babel on your bucket list. The setting, the food and the staff made for a memorable day that will not be easily forgotten. Dont forget to add an extra hour or two to your schedule to be able to fully soak up the beauty of the curated gardens. Youll want to take your time and make sure youre able to take many photos!
What wonderful place, full of hidden gems, as any good place should be. Be sure to catch the Clivia garden in spring, with thousands of different Clivia and scores of varieties. The parterre garden is a delight, and be sure not to miss the amazing succulent collection!
Definitely one of our favourite restaurants to visit for an unique, fresh, and delicious breakfast. Friendly service, clean restaurant and all foods and drinks made from farm fresh produce. Compliments to the chef for creating a delicious vegan breakfast for one of us. This restaurant is quite popular and bookings are essential.
Excellent dining with warm and friendly staff. Great seating options, inside and out, with a beautiful setting. Nice for a quick getaway and best enjoyed with a stroll through the garden where they source most of the ingredients.
Oh my goodness!!! Had one of the best dishes in my life (vegetarian baby corn risotto). It was just an explosion in my mouth. Eating here is definitely worth your money. Would love to return here to try the other dishes. The service was also absolutely great.
Breakfast at Babel is quite the treat. Covid protocols in place and breakfast was served outside on a beautiful morning. Hot and cold breakfast is served and breakfast includes your beverages. The cost of the breakfast is expensive but hey this is a treat. Of course a walk around the beautiful garden is a must. Remember to wear comfortable shoes, a hat and sunscreen.
Pretty average food. Was hoping for much much more. Most of the food was slightly over cooked, slightly dry. The vegetarian options were far better than any meat dish but still not exceptional. It was clear that everything was absolutely fresh and nutritious however - literally from farm to table. The wine was excellent, presentations were impressive, ambience very comfortable and relaxed, seating spacious and comfortable, service average.Due to corona, wine was self service at the table and masks to be work anywhere except that your table. The waiter missed a couple items on the bill which we added on later. The restaurant made effort to present a free dessert as it was a family members birthday.Overall I wouldn’t be back in a hurry. Nice but not for the reviews, location and the price.
Fabulous though pricey experience. We enjoyed the garden tour, which was really interesting and such beautiful gardens. The lunch at Babel is not cheap but worth every cent. Definitely worth it for a special occasion.
Lovely restaurant and the setting is beautiful. The staff was very friendly and professional, however the food unfortunately didnt taste nearly as good as it looks. Room for improvement.
Superb breakfast all from the organic farm. Dinner menu limited ( 3 starters, 3 main 2 desertbut quality excellent. Needless to say the wine is first rate
Piece of Heaven on earth. Babylon gardens is a must do. Put on list for must visit. It is not only a relaxing healing walk but gives lots of knowledge to inexperienced people as well as joy to your soul.
Overrated and pricy. A resto in a winery and the wine list is extremely short and super expensive. The venue is beautiful but be advised that if you go at night you will have to park 400m from the resto and find your way in a dark area with just a couple of indications. Food is ok, nothing spectacular. Had a very average soup, a really good risotto and a good baby chicken. Staff is very friendly.
We went here for breakfast one morning and was very impressed by the attention to detail and quality of the food. After you eat, make sure to stroll through the beautiful gardens which are located right outside the restaurant. My only qualm is that they charged a small entrance fee when our Uber pulled up to the main gate (even though we had reservations- very poor taste.
We had an amazing lunch at Babel which we had to book months in advance. The food and service were excellent. The ingredients are incredibly fresh as they come directly from the gardens on the property. It is true farm to table eating. I wouldn’t hesitate to come here again the next time we visit South Africa.
Beautifully presented reasonable food. Beautiful surroundings, service a little heavy handed, as if it was a bucket and slop. It was cold, try and find a cushion for your chair or the steel seats will freeze your butt. It was expensive and we tipped 10%, if our waitress received this amount then we paid her a week’s salary for 2 hours work. Confusing. 3.5 stars likely more reasonable based on value and food quality.
Such an incredible breakfast at Babel! Beautiful setting, delicious organic food and lovely staff. Topped off with a great walk through the gardens after, definitely would recommend those visiting Cape town to visit the farm !
Great service. Small menu not quite to my taste but what I found to eat was well presented and tasty. Quite a walk from the parking area unless you know where you are going.
Very good salads and service. Mains needed more attention. Over cooked as usual in South Africa but hostess replaced with better version. Wine was very good.
Simply outstanding food, picked from the surrounding gardens. Each meal was better and better. Recommend to drink the wines paired to each meal. Not a cheap outing, so be prepared and go all out !
Good restaurant in an amazing setting. The starter portion sizes are big (as evidenced in the pics). The salmon starter is delicious, they use a special olive oil dressing (I think!). I ordered the steak for mains, wasnt the best Ive had.
