BUNK'ART - Museum in Burrel, Albania
A fascinating glimpse into the paranoid world of communist Albania, this is a huge underground complex on several levels, with many rooms and corridors. Some of the rooms are recreations of how the bunker would have been used, while others give a history of 20th century Albania.
Very interesting, massive bunker, good glimpse of how life was in communist Albania, plus a review of the country’s history. Some random art displays too but that’s the least interesting aspect.
Much much better than bunk’art 2.It’s much Bigger and it’s a bit of walk inside the bunker and even to get into. definitely worth paying 500 LEK
If you are interested in the political history of Albania in the 20th century, this place is a treasure. Even just coming to see this for the structure itself is very worthwhile. Maybe avoid on busy days, cause the tight tunnels could be difficult to explore. 500L for tourists is a very fair price too!
Good initiative and idea, but not the best realisation. More concise presentation, clearer timeline of the displayed events and short intro by the staff would be appreciated. The place is huge, visiting time would be at least 2 h just to walk it through.
Really exciting place. Basically, it is a museum of Albania history that is located in a huge bunker. You can get there by blue bus from Skandenberg square, bus stop is near the clock tower of Tirana.
Super interesting experience inside. You can spend some time in there because there are plenty of rooms with stuff to read. You get get there with public transportation which has a stop exactly in front of the entrance.
Interesting place, few art installations, but thats fine as the history of the country, especially during world war and afterwards was detailed and showed in nice way. But be warned you will have to read a lot and you might need sweater or jacket as it gets chilly down there
Very interesting! There are 4 floors. A little bit chilly inside. You can buy tickets for Bunkart 1 & 2, it will be cheaper.
The object is interesting itself. Quite unusual to visit place like this. Unfortunately, quite big part of exhibition is not about the bunker or history of bunker. The staff was friendly and wanted to speak a lot.
Thought it’d be more like a modern art museum but it’s more historical. It’s huuuge, so expect to spend a good 1-2 hrs to read all the inscriptions and go through all the rooms. Very interesting and eye opening about the history of Albania. Must-do!!!
This is by far the best museum I’ve ever been to so yadad’had better come here if u want to see the best museum on planet earth 🌍 and also visit bunk’art two aswell I’ve been there to and it was as great as bunk’art one
Fascinating museum. Much larger than expected. We wish we could have done the audio tour, but that requires adding an app to your phone, and we didnt have data.
It was very instructive. If you like to learn more about the Albania story and about the military plan you should go there to visit how they built this bunker!
No visit to Tirana is complete without a visit to this museum. The experience is like no other -- unique, unforgettable. The museum is a vast system of underground corridors and chambers, some containing their original belongings.
This is an amazing museum. It covers world war 2, the communist period and art installations. The bunker is huge and well kept. I speed run museums but this one was very exciting and I had to spend some time!I walked to the museum from the town, that’s an hour. Wouldn’t recommend. You can take l11 porcelan, a bus in the direction of the museum or a taxi if you want to spend more.Im writing this on the l11 and haven’t paid yet but I believe it’s under 50 lek.
One of the Places you have to visit in your life. Shows the craziness of a dictator..... If you dont play with the boy in the playground you dont like he will come back with such things....
Super interesting but where was the art?? I quickly reset my expectations but either they should install more art or change the name. I could see some really cool site specific art works going in there. Otherwise was very interesting to read the history of modern day Albania. And of course the space is incredibly cool.
Incredible depiction of Albanians history stretching from pre-WWII through the communist era. Situated in a Cold War era bunker, the experience feels far more visceral and real than most historical experiences. If driving one’s self the single lane tunnel at the entrance can prove rather tricky!
Very interesting. But bring a jacket, it is a bit chilly down there.
Excellent overview on Albanian history and development in the facinating environment of the bunker that should protect all albanian leaders.Cool inside all year long.Defintly worth a visit, and I would recommend after you have seen some parts of the country.
This is a combination historical museum and art exhibition. It is set in the actual bunker that the totalitarian dictator Enver Hoxha had constructed to shelter him and his leadership cronies from a nuclear, chemical or biological warfare attack. After getting to the outskirts of Tirana (bus is the best option hereyou walk through a 200 metre tunnel (originally built for vehicle access to the bunker complexto the entry kiosk. After paying a 500L adult entry fee you can pay 200L more for an app-based audio guide.(Note: if you don’t have earphones for your smart phone you will not be given the code required to activate the audio guide. We were very frustrated that this information was not available in any promotional information that we consulted before our visit. While we can’t be certain, we’re quite sure an audio guide would have enhanced the experience significantly).Once you’re past the entry kiosk you walk another approximately 200 metres (on a slight uphill inclineto the bunker entrance. You are immediately struck by the brutalism of the construction; this is a place that was built for holocaust survival, not aestheics or creature comfort.Without an audio guide we were left to read the various interpretive panels throughout the large exhibition. By and large the panels are presented in an “old-school” interpretive style - heavy on facts (names; dateswhile for the most part light on compelling narrative and storytelling. In the exhibits where storytelling is used (such as the saga of the aircraft crash that left 26 American medics and nurses stranded in Albania during WWII, and their subsequent escapethe exhibtion really comes to life. There are also some quite fascinating and compelling art pieces on offer. Near the end of the installation there are two particulalry powerful pieces. One, a room of mirrors that illustrates the interplay between militaritic language and modern digital modalities (like video games). And the second, an extraordinarily emotive animated piece projected on a concrete wall over one of the final stairwells as you near the exit. On the latter case it’s well worth taking 2 ½ minutes to watch the whole piece (we watched it twice). While we feel that there is an enormous amount of unrealized potential here, we’re also aware that the installation has only been open since 2016. We hope that there are plans to continually improve the exhibits as they tell an important story.Well worth a visit.
Lots of information about the history of surveillance, police and paranoia in Albania till the downfall of communism. Not pleasant but very interesting, everything is translated in English, there are a lot of audio and visual archives and objects to make the visit immersive.
Now this place is absolutely amazing! If you are Cold War history geek, looking to know more about the history of communist Albania - this is the place for you. The bunker is guarded by the military and it is part of a military base. Entering is via tunnel which is very cool. And then the fun starts. Entering the park in front of the Nuclear and Chemical bunker for the officials of the Albanian Labour party (communistsyou enter the world of the Cold War. There is a lot to see. 5 levels of rooms full of history, including the apartment of Enver Hoxha. Some people say it is not interesting as BunkArt 2, but for me it was amazing experience, way better than the BunkArt in the city center. Again there is a room for improvement, the gift shop can be better, but still there is a replica of an authentic Albanian bunker, that you can buy as a souvenir. As an advise - print some maps as a souvenirs - in the bunkers there are maps of the bunker clusters in Albania, some posters with the bunker blueprints and stuff like that. And the staff is very cool! Ive asked a nice lady for a song name that was part of the exhibition and she gave it to me, as well as brief lecture on the subject of local music. A must see place if you are in Tirana.
Great place to visit in Tirana to get to know more about the history of Albania. There are two bunkarts in Tirana, one that is in the city center and this one that is a bit further, but apparently the best one, if you have to choose. It costs 500lek and they only accept cash like most of the places in Albania
This anti atomic bunker located in the outskirts of Tirana is a must visit! Since it opened for the public in 2016 many tourists showed interest to visit this post-communist museum. It’s a good spot to learn more about dictatorships and the communist ideology.
Our tour of Bunk’Art was incredible, and well worth the cost of having the guided tour with our guide Freedom, whose English was excellent and had us all mesmerized (including our 14 and 12 year old childrenas he shared Albania’s history with our family. The museum and the guided tour should be considered a must-see for anyone visiting the country and the capital city Tirana!
Wonderful place to learn a little about the history and culture of this wonderful country. I only ask that those who come to visit him, respect him and do not spoil anything. Respect the markings and dont mess with anything. Help maintain and preserve heritage.
Bunkart is for sure a hotspot for tourists and local people also. It will show you a lot about the communism era and mentality in Albania. Even in the hot summer days dont forget take a jacket with yourself as it gets very cold in the long tunnels.
Very educational and informative. The English translations/information within the bunker was easier for me to understand (readingand covers more details than the audio app guide. I would not purchase the additional app/audio guide if I knew.
Impressive bunker with nice exhibitions and very friendly and helpful staff. i can definitely recommend this place!
Impressive installations. The quality of the historical information and art collection is also good.
Well designed, worth a visit even if you not a history buff
Must see attraction in Tirana. Its bigger and more informative than the city center offshoot. Id suggest to pair this with the Dajti express as theyre right next to each other. We spent maybe one hour going through. There is a lot to read, not always in English. Maybe also bring a coat as it can be cold. There is parking on site if you bring a car.
Very interesting experience. Definitely worth a visit. The bus ride was about 15 mins and another 10 mins walk. Plenty of signages around. It takes about 1 hour to tour the place at your own pace.
Stunning place and horrifying at the same time. People looking for war should go there and ask themselves if they would like to live there for the rest of their life.
Unexpectedly, this is not an underground bunker, everything is on ground floor inside the mountain. It is also a military bunker, not a fallout shelter, so it is built for government to hide only up to few weeks or months. Having said that, the museum is a must-visit for anyone entering Albania. It was kept secret until 2014 so everything is quite fresh and original. Best thing about it for me was the various unique smells of old things: funiture, paint, wiring. It really made it easy to get the vibe and imagine it being used for real. There are several dozens of rooms with varied random content not necessarily related to bunker, history, war or economy. Seems like they want this museum to be a one-stop-shop for Albania english speaking tourists, since their other museums lacked translations. Only about half of the rooms had expositions in 2022, so they have a lot of space for other content in the future. The bunker is linear and takes 1-2 hours to go through. The corridors are narrow so I advice going right after they open to avoid crowds. I recommend against buying audio guide, since the same text is easier to read next to rooms and the app is not comfortable and does not work well (no wifi during my visit). Some of the rooms were poorly explained and boring, it was hard to connect description with the material inside. I had trouble discerning which parts of exhibition were from bunker realities (bufetand which from daily communist life (shop, apartment), but all of the staff was very helpful and answered my questions with fluent english.
Amazing stories of Albania mainly during the communism regime.Cheap entry & safe parking.
Me and my friend went there a lil bit late near the closing time and were unable to read everything in detailed. We did had a quick run through of the more visual history of the war bunkers ana love it so much. Some history information are in Albanian and we couldnt understand, but a huge amount has English wordings to it for tourist to understand. Definitely wished we couldve had more time for the visit. The place gave an eerie feeling and vibe and its thrilling.Admissions for it is 500 lek/person as of March 2022
Recommend to visit. The museum is interesting, very well done. Nice exhibition that brings you to the past times
1 hour was spent here, could take 2 hours if I read all the placard. Lots of info mainly in the 30s and 40s. I thought it was interesting. Power went out for a little bit. Not recommended and nothing interesting for children in my opinion. Overall, I enjoyed it.
Bunk’ART is a must see! There’s so much to learn. They did a wonderful job with the displays and written text. I appreciated the English translations! Definitely don’t miss this place. The music, sound effects, fog, and foam machines added a nice a touch! I would honestly visit again. Make sure to eat before so you can spend enough time.General admission is 500 LEK per person. Great price
A must visit!!! Takes you 40 years back when uncertainty of invasion and the fear of a nuclear attack was present. A lot of original stuff from the communist era and an impressive, massive bunker.
A very interesting place to visit, you can find a lot of historical info inside, is quite big but will keep you entertained! Fairly easy to find it, if you don’t want to spend a lot of money you can get there by bus from Tirana’s city center for 40 lek
Must see place when you are in Tirana. The space is really huge and it takes a couple of hours to go through each room. A little depressive but give an idea of how scared the top politburo in Albania was at that time. Most of the information is in English.
not so much Art but a lot of information about Albanian 20th century history and Hoxha himself. You can visit nearly the complete bunker (it is really big)
Very nice museum, informative and huge. They offer audio guides in 3 languages and have sufficient information boards around the museum. Ticket costs 500 Lek per adult and 700 Lek with audio guide which is very affordable. A great experience!
Nice experience for 500lek. Totally worth it. I booked the audoguide for 200lek more but it was mainly the same info that it is in the pannels so it is not that worth. Very cold:bring a sweater with you!
Awesome place to visit to better understand the history of Albania. Little ways out of the city but easy to find. The place is absolutely huge! Must visit for anyone in Tirana. A+
