B.B.'s Lawnside BBQ in Kansas City

Hidden KC gem on the south side of town, home to the oldest jam session (every Saturday 2-5delicious bbq and cold drinks! If you’re a musician this a great place to network and hangout but if not then any day of the week is fine to come in and have a meal and watch live music with friends or family!

Average BBQ for KC... Terrific baked beans.... Live music regularly... We got seated right away but our food took about 1.5 hours on a Sunday. I got the indication they were busier than normal due to a car show, live band, and a Chiefs game. Fun place

Very disappointing. Had the BB’s King Combo. Brisket was awful. Dry, gray, tasted like it was a week old. Ribs and burnt ends were ok, definitely not worth the praise the other reviews gave. Only thing we enjoyed was the beans. Seemed like a cool place with good, friendly service. We were so excited to try it and left unsatisfied and disappointed.

I loves places with character. Even tho my family has lived in area since early 50s. Never been. It was like going back to the church you grew up in, a sense that things are the same, with people that give you a warm smile. And even had live music at 2p ! Waitress was a pro. You ordered what she wanted you to order. Not pushy, think Mom giving you medicine with a smile. This medicine was tasty for the soul. Ribs, sliced brisket, sausage, burnt ends. Like church there is always that uncomfortable moment- the sauce. I’m not a believer. Maybe its acquired taste, but KC is the sauce capital, ask my TX friends who think it’s blasphemy. Well this sauce boarders on back sliding with a weird spice. Anyone name it? Band was a added atmosphere and these players were KC blues tight. Great experience. Amen! Food was good )bbqthey were able to accommodate my food allergies to soy and gluten. Very disappointed about the bill found out we were being charged 28 dollars onto our bill for 4 people just to sit and eat dinner in the restaurant because there was a band playing. Had I known would have telemetry it to go. No one said anything to us when setting us about a charge for music and I had already tipped the band for playing. Don’t think I will be back. Dinner for 4 was $220. Without tips , desert, and doggie bags. Service was confused and slow.

Wow! So much good food! We got the boudin balls for an appetizer. The nachos are huge, the sandwiches are huge, the combo plate is huge, and everything is delicious!

I havent been here in years. I was excited to return. I went with girlfriends on a Wednesday night because of the band playing. They were blues & very good! Who doesnt like blues with their bbq?I am not much of a red meat eater. But I tried the burnt ends my friend had. It was tender and tasty.I had gumbo. I make this at home and I was skeptical but it did not disappoint! I will try the jambalaya next time, cant wait!We also ordered Boudin balls [rice balls, deep fried], for the table & they were spicy and good. Another friend had the pork nachos, not my thing, because she ordered them on chips instead of the Irish nachos, ( on top of steak fries), so I was turned off by that.I was DD, so just water. My friends said the drinks were great!Bathroom situation is not very modern, but if people would flush properly, keep it clean and be quick, it wouldnt be a problem.Staff was spread thin, but very courteous & great service!🏆Thank you for a great, memorable evening!Excited to go back!!

Went BB Lawnside BBQ last Saturday afternoon for the Mama Ray jam. The music and the cold beer was awesome. The BBQ is pretty good too. Great way to spent a Saturday afternoon.

Absolutely stellar gem tucked away in KC. Our group travels a lot and loves a good place with quality food, great service, and great atmosphere.Michelle, our waitress, took care of us the entire time and had the best recommendations. I would come back just to have service from her.Then there is the food! Holy food baby. The ribs fall off the bone and the seasoned potatoes are on point. And don’t even get me started on the fried bread pudding. 😍😍😍Next time I’m in town I will be back for sure for one of the jazz nights. Thanks for the grub!

BBs Lawnside BBQ- Its OLD. lol They do have live music, but not sure how often. Maybe every night. A lot of blues memorabilia on the walls. Some tables along the wall but 2 long tables in the middle and you might have to sit next to someone what you dont know. Anyway. This is what we ordered. The BB King Combo With pulled pork and burnt ends. Best to last in order Burnt ends, pulled pork , Italian sausage then ribs. My son loved the sausage but he is a sausage person. I liked the pit beans. We also had the Irish nachos and the bread pudding. I really liked the skillet fries in the nachos. If i ate there again it would be burnt ends , pulled pork or the Irish Nachos. 3 sauces one was a peach or apricot and they other 2 were ok. PS Guy Fieri has been here. diners drive inns and dives. Second year in a row we’ve stopped in on our way to an enduro dirt track race in Iowa from Texas, this time we brought the race team! I talked up the BBQ months in advance and didn’t disappoint at all! Everyone loved it! Can’t wait for the next visit!

The meat is very tender and good.They a live band on weekends.Staff are friendly. Always have a nice time

We are from out of town and had never been in before and I am glad we stopped. The Onion Rings and Louisiana Balls appetizers were fantastic. The burnt ends were some of the best BBQ I have ever had. I couldnt ask for anything better! The service was perfect. I would definitely come back here if we were ever around.

Atmosphere and music alone is a reason to go the good BBQ is a bonus.

My personal opinion, this is best BBQ in KC!! Been supporting Lindsay and his place for about 30 years. Not only great food but butt kickin blues and cold beer! If you want a great time with your dinner, you need to visit this icon!! Long live BBS Lawnside BBQ!!🤤🤤

We have come here on barbecue tours and they treat us wonderfully! Amazing food, some of the best staff and just a good time the three times we’ve been there. We are confident to bring our out of towners just bc of the consistent great food and service! Thanks BB’s! Miss Shawna is the best, we love her!

My daughters chicken sandwich was hot and very good. My husbands bbq sundae was ok. My turkey sandwich was cold turkey lunch meat on an oversized bun. I would have said something to the waitress but we didnt see her after she took our order until I went to the register to pay.

Found this place on our way through as a recommendation from some guys at Kissick Construction. We were greeted promptly by Liz. When we were ready to order her menu item advice was spot on with the BB Kings Combo. (Plenty of food for 2All of the staff was friendly and the cooks definitely put in the effort and passion into the food. After the main meal Liz came by to offer dessert. Deep fried bread pudding. For those who have never had it, it is a must try. You will not be disappointed. Liz was very attentive and had a great attitude making for a great fun experience. Thank you Liz and cooks for a great first impression. Will definitely be back on our way through again.

Amazing beef brisket sandwich and meat platter; wish they had some really hot hot sauce though 🥵 overall good vibes and the waitress was super hardworking and efficient!

This is our favorite BBQ in the whole of KCMO! Weve tried many others but keep regretting it. We had the Hickory Platter with turkey, pulled pork and brisket. Also the rib tips dinner. Both great!Live music every evening and just an all around great experience.

HIGHLY recommend! We stumbled upon this restaurant during an open mic day on accident and we were completely blown away! So many talented performers!The environment is fun, staff was attentive, a variety of menu items, and delicious food!

Ill be honest, it takes a lot for me to rate this low.I went with my in laws for dinner tonight. The chili cheese dip is pretty good. The issues arose when dinner arrived. We had two different burnt end dinner plates and they both had a lot of pork...the reason thats a problem is its supposed to be beef. We asked our waitress about it and she went to the kitchen only to return with a small piece of beef and pork to try and explain the difference and what happened; its nice to be called a liar when you can clearly tell where in the pork rib the meat came from. It was pretty obvious, even if youre not a bbq person that they werent serving burnt ends. Food was solid otherwise but really???!Outside of that major screwup, service is decent, Id avoid the old fashioned and fries that arent skillet fries. Beans are way too sweet and not in a good way.Most disappointing place Ive been to in awhile.

We had the best time here. Go layer in the afternoon to hear the music, they have regulars that get up and sing with the band. The BBQ was excellent, dont let the outside of the building discourage you. It is family style seating.

This is a quaint local bar. We ordered appetizers to hold us over until a family memorial dinner a little later. They had live blues/old music. We really enjoyed watching the band! This is in Kansas City...

Wonderful, finger licking good as always! We have been coming here a long time & cant get enough of the great food which you smell as soon as you arrive! We love the Cajun shack style building & vibe & the nightly live blues music is amazing! Perfect food & atmosphere to sit or dance a few hours & enjoy!

This place is great. The brisket is sliced thin and is tender. The pulled pork is AMAZING, turkey was juicy. Must get the baked beans and fried potatoes, the potatoes were out of this world. My only complaint is that you cannot get the burnt ends in a meat combo. I had to buy the burnt end sandwich with no bread, it was well worth it. The ladies were amazing and helpful since it was my first time here. Have to try this place if youre in KC!

Always a favorite. Would drive out of the way to stop here when Im coming through town, and have been for 20 years. Best blues around. Ribs and burnt ends are always fantastic!

Live music with my BBQ? Yes please. Get in early if you want a spot to sit, it can get busy. Their food explains why! Great spot!

Neat atmosphere. Lots of atmosphere. Great ribs. Great burnt ends. Also had some smoked catfish. Very good if you like catfish. Cheap cold beer. Highly recommend the Jambalaya.

The store is decorated very cute and has a rock a billy vibe. The waitress was very friendly, and she was on the ball about refilling drinks and checking in on us even with having several tables- I was very impressed by her. The menu has a great selection of bbq options to chose from and our food was out to the table fast! There wasn’t a band when I was there, but I saw a calendar in the bathroom that looks like there are bands most days which would only add to the experience!

Havent had a bad experience yet. Stopped in for a late lunch at an off peak time. Service was fast and the food was superb. My husband commented that his sandwich may have been the best BBQ sandwich hed ever had. I had the rib plate and it was excellent. Our server was personable and attentive.

Had a blast on Saturday night. The band was amazing and the food was great. The pigs they got the ribs from must have been huge! They were amazing. I tried the Boudin balls which were excellent. My sides were the pit beans and potato salad. Rock solid potato salad. Just what you expect for potato salad. The beans were great. Firm and tasty.The ribs were great. They were tender but still stuck to the bone. Maybe a little too much pull for me, but they were filling.

Bringing great BBQ to hungry Kansas City blues music fans for over 30 years. Totally casual atmosphere and live music venue sure to please all the blues music fans within an ear shot! Easy to find with plenty of free parking. I had the pulled pork sandwich and my wife ordered the chips and cheese dip and our friends ordered the ribs and burnt ends. No complaints, really tasty bbq I belive has actually improved over the years. If you enjoy Blues and BBQ dont miss BBs Lawnside its a memorable place.

Excellent BBQ! I got the burnt end sandwich and coleslaw. This place was a nice oasis from the summer heat. Plenty of beer on tap, famous bbq and a great atmosphere. 10/10 ate the whole thing.

This is my favorite place to get BBQ in Kansas City. The atmosphere is great! The live music is great and lets not forget about the BBQ smoked in a 60+ year old smoker. And if you want to get your down south Louisiana fix they have great stuff on the menu for that too. If you dont try the catfish you are missing out.

This place was great! We all enjoyed our dinners. BBs makes some of the best gumbo in the world. Ive eaten gumbo in New Orleans, and this gumbo wins, hands-down. Also, the rib tips are fantastic, the burnt ends are the perfect combination of tender and crispy, and the pit beans are better than I can remember anywhere else. Both the skillet fries and the battered fries are memorable too.

We went on a Sunday, right after open. Did not meet expectations. Food was warm at best, not very much flavor and the turkey and ham I ordered with the King Combo was lunch meat. We heard the microwave opening and shutting…spent over $100 dollars and left very disappointed.

Wife and I ordered BBs King Combo. We took enough home for another two meals I think. We got brisket and added the burnt ends. The brisket was tender and moist. The burnt ends were, well, burnt with a nice bark. Really fatty though, which can be good or bad based on personal preference. Just eating one or two though it was perfect. The ribs were tender but not too tender to the point the meat fell off the bone.The sauce that came on it was...fruity. Thats what my wife said. She wasnt a fan of the peachy sweet sauce. I liked it though it was a little too sweet for me. Ask for some hot BBQ sauce on the side to spice things up. It packs the right amount of heat without burning afterwards.The atmosphere feels like youd expect for a joint with Lawnside in the name. It looks and feels like sitting in a closed deck set up for a big family picnic. Perfect.

Great bbq spot. Service was great! I love the environment and mixture of bbq and blues/jazz! My only complaint is there was no music. I understand you can’t have live music all the time but even some good jazz/blues playing in the background would be better than silence:just a friendly suggestion! Love the place and would recommend!

This place is a find!! A coworker and I were looking for a hole in the wall BBQ joint and this place seemed to fit the part. When we arrived we knew it was going to be good....This place is quaint and comfortable. Its not stuffy and polished like chain restaurants. And while the look is more relaxed than the big chains, that doesnt mean their food is..Their BBQ is spot on delicious. I ordered the Big Sweet. Lord have mercy that sandwich is good. Its pulled pork with sliced sausage and onion straws on top covered with their sweet heat peach BBQ sauce. The best pulled pork sandwich I have ever had. I also chose the battered fries..... My coworker got the burnt tips sandwich with the baked beans and green beans. He said the burnt tips sandwich had the perfect amount of sauce and meat. He also raved about their green beans.There is a reason Guy Fieri liked this joint....trust me, you will love it.

Take out was fast. The ribs were a bit dry and not super tender. They come lightly sauced. The house hot sauce isnt super hot and has a good flavor. I would not recommend the BBQ sundae for take out because it doesnt travel well. Im sure its delightful in the mason jar, but the plastic container did not do it justice. The parking lot was rough.

Good BBQ. Ordered the BBQ Sundae and Burnt end dinner. The Sunday was tasty, tender pulled pork with a lot of flavor. Creamy slaw and ok beans. The pickle was really good. The burnt ends had good flavor and enjoyed the crispy potatoes.Just not sure about the cleanliness? Looking around, chairs other items thrown in a corner. Men’s bathroom - not so clean. Makes me hesitant to eat here again. I realize the atmosphere is eclectic, nothing fancy, but feel surroundings, cleanliness are reflective of a kitchen.

My wife and I were in town for the weekend and decided to try somewhere new. We were not disappointed!I tried The Big Walter sandwich which was various meats chopped up in a thin coating of sauce. Delicious. I had a side of potato salad and some chili (which was delicious when I tasted it, but was too full to eat it at that time).My wife had a pulled pork and brisket combo sandwich with a side of battered fries. Also tasty!We agreed this wasnt our favorite barbecue in the city, but it was really good and we will definitely be back.
