Calle de Atocha, 49, 28012 Madrid, Spain, Carabanchel
In an area filled with bars and restaurants, this lively hotel with a retro flair caters to gay men. It's a minute’s walk from Antón Martín metro station, an 11-minute walk from Museo Nacional Del Prado and a 12-minute walk from Real Jardín Botánico.Swanky rooms with a circa-1980s vibe feature free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs and minibars. Upgraded rooms add balconies or patios; some have sitting areas and 4-poster beds. Plush suites offer living rooms. Room service is available.Dining options include a bright, contemporary restaurant and a clubby bar. There’s also a gym, and a vibrant rooftop terrace with a pool and a bar.
Absolutely loved it! Nice staff, beautiful rooms, great location and just the fact to be surrounded by so many beautiful gay people! Amazing!
Hotel was conveniently located with attractive vibe. Desk staff were outstanding. Room was comfortable.
I feel as if I stayed in a totally different hotel than described in some of the reviews. I booked the Axel Madrid for two nights after I saw the exterior of the Barcelona property, thinking it would be similar. This property in Madrid is in serious need of maintenance and updating. I cant imagine how its considered a four-star property; its more like a cheap roadside Motel 6 we have in the USA.. The room was beat up with paint scuffs and scratched furniture. The patio door frame actually came out of the wall when you opened the door. Room number two smelled of cigarette smoke and a sour smell like soured laundry. The towels and sheets were threadbare and there was no impermeable mattress cover on the mattress-just a thin flat sheet between the soiled mattress and me. The carpet at the room entry was soiled and had faded spots. I spoke to the front desk clerk after checking in asking if there were any better, updated rooms, but he said there were not. I thought Id just go with it for the two nights but after I spent one sleepless night, I checked out at 6 am and checked into another property across the street. They did refund my nights stay but what a disappointment, misrepresentation, and hassle. The staff was generally pleasant and the rooftop bar/pool area was nice, but this hotel needs a total update. Beware.
I stayed at your hotel in Madrid in the room 309 during the days 01-04 October 2022. As you were aware we had the following issues with the room that bring us many inconveniences:1- inadequate cleaning service in the bathroom2- bad smell from the shower3- a water loss from the sink during the the last morning! We did not have any assistance from the desk for these problems and any sort of compensation. It was unacceptable! This was not a 4 stars service!
I enjoyed this hotel. Great location, a gym, and fun rooftop pool.
Generally a good stay but it was noisy at times with loud music from the rooftop and the lobby. Great location and near major attractions.
Great hotel for gay couples and also straight people, perfectly located close to gay spots, museums, restaurants. Very nice roof terrace with bar and a pool.
I loved my second stay this year few days ago at Axel Hotel Madrid. I will definitely come a third time :everything was perfect and the breakfast delicious. Beautiful view from the pool in the 7th floor. The guys at the reception were always helpful and kind. stay like that.😄☀️
Next to the Buenos Aires Axel, which has now closed, this is our favorite one in the brand. Everything was perfect. If I may make one suggestion, well two actually.1Please have restricted hours for the courtyard. We were awaken at 4am from the loud screams and cheers. We tried to be understanding as people are on holiday but at 415am it was getting worse. My husband went to the front desk to complain and it got quiet for about 10 minutes then started up again. At 445am, I went down to complain and the front desk person, he was a bigger guy, got upset with me and yelled, I already told them. But he must have said something because 5 minutes later, they left.2I am not sure how you would do this, but if you could designate a small section of your outdoor pool area for non smokers, that would be great. I am highly allergic to cigarette and really could not take full advantage of the outdoor space. I had to stay near the entrance to the bar area but people would smoke from behind near the pool/bar window. I did take allergy pills but that made me tired and again I couldnt enjoy the pool.Overall...an amazing experience. I cannot wait to book our Miami vacation getaway!Charlie Brown
Fabulous hotel, would love to go back there anytime soon. Very nice and clean rooms, location is great, staff the most welcoming and friendly I have ever seen. Nice breakfast and sky bar 🍸
The hotel has an excellent location for visiting attractions and shopping. The staff are friendly and very helpful. The Sky pool bar is the star attraction. Ideal for relaxing in the afternoon/evening before going out later. The monochrome design and neon sign in our room were very cool. Housekeeping was good. A few small things to note. Firstly as our room was facing the main street, noise from the street was very audible in the early hours though that is not unusual for city hotels. Secondly the room number held in an open palm is a nice design feature but not very practical when the door closes and the protruding fingers hit you in the arm. Lastly the breakfast buffet seemed to be a bit disjointed with the buffet in a separate room to the restaurant. This was changed on the morning we left. Also a lack of spoons and milk for having cereals was unusual. We would definitely stay in the hotel again and have no hesitation in recommending to our friends. It was the perfect base for a great weekend in Madrid.
it is all about location and this is a pretty good one. The rooftop bar and pool are very nice and the breakfast is well provisioned.
We stayed at Axel Madrid last week and we did not have a great experience. When we arrived on Sept 1st in the morning our room was not ready, they advised us to wait at the rooftop but we were told that the swimming pool filter was broken, we could not use it, so we decided to go to spend the day at a friend’s swimming pool and do the check in late.We checked in in the evening . When we got to our room we realised we only had one pillow each so we rang the reception and requested for another pair. The night receptionist said they didn’t have any as the hotel was fully booked and he could not give us any solution for an extra pillow. Obviously we did not have the best sleep. The next morning, we asked the morning receptionist and we got more pillows straight away. Our perception was that the night reception did not have any intention to help/ assist. After breakfast we decided to spend the day at the roof top pool but the filter was still broken, so we couldn’t use it. We politely complained to the receptionist, who apologised ( obviously it was not her fault and said she would report to her manager and he would contact us back.Swimming pool got fixed on Sep 3rd, we checked out on Sep 4th early in the morning. We paid for a service that was not available. We left the hotel with no solution, explanation or compensation. I am still waiting to be contacted by the manager. It is a shame this happened because it was my fourth time staying there but I would not consider coming back or recommend it to someone else.

Very friendly staff, great location. We also enjoyed the rooftop bar, outdoor sunbed area and the small pool. Nice views of Madrid from here.
The location is great. Beds comfortable. Rooms cute and comfy. Easy to get a taxi out front. Metro station close by.The night light in the bathroom is connected to the neon in the bedroom? The 2 lifts were an issue for most of the 4 night stay - 1 was stuck on level 3 or 6. The other the door was likely to close on you… took til day 3 for a sign to appear.Like another reviewer we were placed in a lower room category than our booking. Initially the reception said they only have Premium rooms - not Premium AND Premium Executive…. Despite their own website saying they offer 2 types of Premium with about EUR20-25 a day difference. The receptionist told us to complain to our booking agency… I guess that just means their agents will get to know how they shaft their guests.Breakfast is a bit of a mystery when reception tells you it’s down the back - then you sit near the buffet and another staff tells you to move to the front room. Anyway we learnt their curious ways….
Really nice and helpful staff. The pool area is a bonus, but its small and very overcrowded with parties. The hotel is not comfortable. There were two elevators at the hotel and only one worked. Every day the second elevator broke down and I was there for five days watching it and management did not get it working properly. The other elevator is slow and has problems with the door closed.Every day I reminded them to get it fixed. My reminding them didnt help. This shouldve been taken care of right away until it was fixed properly. I was there five days and there was no sense of urgency. The lobby looks dirty and lacks appeal. There are are stains all over the floors and walls look tired and dirty. There theres nowhere to sit in the lobby- no comfortable sofa or chairs and comfortable furniture in the lobby. And theres no comfortable furniture in the room. The bed is not inviting- hard and the pillows are thin and not soft and comfy. The area where the hotel is located is very busy. Its inexpensive or at least what I paid was not expensive. Bottom line is I would not stay there again and you get what you pay for. This is not for a well traveled person.
I had a fantastic stay at Axel Madrid. The rooms were beautiful and kept to a pristine cleanliness. The staff were all very welcoming and the pool area was beautiful.I would highly recommend anyone to stay here.
Stayed here for 3 nights, lovely clean and modern room. Perfect location, we bought the tourist ticket as expected to use the metro but we hardly needed to as the hotel is close to many sights/amenities.
Great staff and service for the reception and Skybar, except for room service. Besides charging us more for minibar consumption, when we called the room service to order water bottles , they said that they were closed and we should go out to get water (that was after midnightin a very rude manner.
The hotels decor was thoughtfully and modernly designed. During our visit, every member of staff was exceptionally friendly and accommodating. We had the chance to cool off from the heat at the sky bar and pool, both of which were fantastic. The location is excellent because everything in the city center is easily accessible on foot and is close to Sol and Plaza Mayor. When I next travel to Madrid, I will without a doubt stay at the same hotel, and book it at Locktrip again since the price was 85 $ a night on there and 140 $ a night on the offical site, would also recommend using this 5GZND discount code on Locktrip.
Lovely hotel and friendly staff Very comfortable bed in a beautiful roomOnly downside was the Sky Bar On both late afternoon visits it was packed and I suspect there were day visitors who were not actually staying at the hotel The atmosphere was fun but it did feel that I was gate crashing a private party which members of staff were at the centre ofSo in short I had a great stay at Axel Madrid but Sky Bar and a very narrow pool fell short of expectations
Very disappointed as I got a room downgrade and was not told at check in. had to come back twice to reception for them to acknowledge they had downgraded me and the room I had booked was not available. They apologized ..still made my stay a bad memory instead of a great one.I got for most of my stay a darkroom without windows instead and a bed that was not comfortable as I could feel the separation of the 2 single bed put together.Only got the room I booked for one night last night... It was a great room..too sad I did not get it all my stay.Interesting concept but you dont feel special for it.
I’ll start with the good: check-in was seamless, and the front desk staff were all lovely and extremely helpful. The location is also quite good. The bad: the rooms are tacky and dated and extremely dark. The lighting in the rooms is awkward. Every room has a neon light with some kind of phrase which is extra tacky and really unnecessary. Our room’s Juliette balcony overlooked the interior courtyard and you could hear noise echoing from both the rooftop pool as well as from down below. The rooftop pool is tiny and packed with people getting drunk, so it’s definitely not a relaxing atmosphere. Even worse, people not staying at the hotel can access the rooftop pool so it’s overrun with people who just came to party and it was really obnoxious. I suppose it’s fine if you’re ok with all of this, but I don’t recommend it whatsoever. Stay elsewhere.
Great experience. Rooms were super clean, staff very friendly and the location superb!
Very friendly and pleasant staff, nice and spacious rooms and delicious breakfast!
The hotel is beautiful, this was our second stay and we enjoyed it.One thing, I got hit on the back/shoulder twice by the hand sculpture on the door to the bedroom when it closed on me as I was carrying luggage. Can you do anything about this?
Great location. Nice size rooms. Pool area great especial during summer months its just a shame we did not once get a sun bed or pool towel due to allowing local people to enter. Drinks very expensive with not so friendly bar staff. This hotel is Adult only not for the faint hearted! Rainbow flags!.
Excellent friendly staff, awesome location, Sky Bar is clean and friendly atmosphere. Really amazing stay in a clean and well run hotel. Could not have picked a better place. Thanks Axel
I love the Axel Hotel in Madrid. Especially during Pride it feels like the right place to be offering fun and freedom as well as a bit of respite from the non-stop noise in Chueca. The staff are all very friendly and very helpful, and work very hard to look after customers who can be very demanding. I loved the new food menu for the roof terrace. The only negative was the variety and quality of the breakfast changed during my stay. Overall I would not hesitate to recommend Axel Hotel Madrid.
Great hotel!loved the room, service and pool!See you again soon.
A great hotel that is heterofriendly. The sushi bar on the ground floor is great for a quick bite. Rooftop bar is also hot, hot, hot!
Rooms were clean, comfy bed and all there was needed. Note Website pics and email communications prior may have created high expectations..but overall very good. Pool is long and nice to spend an afternoon sipping on drinks with a direct window to the bar. However, service was very slow and if better organized they could have had a much higher turn around and sell more. It took each time 15min to get a simple drink and the line up was not enormous, but something that can easily improved. Location was awesome. Love the place st. Ana just behind the hotel with many rzstaurants. Anachuela barbacoa pork ribs for 13eur are delicious and amazing value for your money...!!
I had a great time. Its my second time Ive stayed in the hotel and definitely Ill be back. All staffs are very kind and polite specially Nestor, Valentin and the Hotel manager unfortunately who I dont remember his name. The breakfast was amazing too!!!
An antique ashtray we bought as a souvenir at a Portuguese flea market went missing from our room. When we reported the incident to the staff, we were assured that it would be investigated by the management. We returned to the Axel a week later, following a trip to Andalusia, and there had been no update regarding the missing item. When we inquired again, we were told that they “trust their cleaning staff” and they claimed no knowledge of or responsibility for the disappearance. In other words, management “trusts” their cleaners more than their guests. We never got any response or apology from the hotel management. Just a “sorry bout that” from the desk clerk at check out. Obviously, we’ll never stay at an Axel Hotel again (and this was our third time, after Barcelona and Berlin).
Everything was amazing: Awesome staff, so friendly! The location was perfect for exploring the city. We could walk everywhere, so we didn‘t have use the metro. Best of all was the pool and the rooftop bar. Lovely atmosphere and great views.
Very hospitable and service oriented staff. Furthermore the pool and gym facility look great. The hotel is in the middle of the city centre, which allows you to walk to almost all big squares and centre tourist locations.
Lucked into this hotel. Rooms are spotless and services is impeccable. The roof top pool is wonderful with a great view. Located meters from the metro and Puerta di sol, cant ask for much more
Great location and nice staff. Rooms are ok, not too big, but average size. However, I found somethings missing from what I would expect from a 4 stars hotel. As, no room service, they told me they are working on it. I was wellcome with a free cava drink on the terrace, which I really appreciated, unfortunately they had run of cava. The pool on the terrace is open to everybody with no space nor times reserved for clients. I could not use it as both the sun area and pool were packed with locals. And their weekest was breakfast. On Sundays it opens at 8am, in reality they opened at 8:10. Two of us were waiting but I was the first to get in, and the buffet seemed that had not been touched from the previous morning, bread crums and nuts scattered, some signs with the explanation had fallen and were lying next to the food, the same tortilla, salmon, very poor jamon serrano, spinachs from the previous day, nothing looked as if it has just been placed and cooked right before, on the contrary it all seemed as if it had been left there from the previous day. That was the case, for sure, of the butter left unrefrigerated so some were just too scary to eat. By the way temperatures in Madrid reached 38°! Very limited options for teaand from the cheapest brand you can get in any shop. The orange juice, seemed ok. The overall selection was rather limited. Instead of napkins you find a thin toilette napkin, bread crums on the sofas…I’m a regular hotel user, in the nexts days I will be staying in 3 different hotels 5 and 4 stars (Madrid, Bruxelles and Costa Bravaand this will be the most expensive of all!! So, I would reccomend the option without breakfast.
Everything was fine but breakfast on my final day was disappointing. The staff were unwelcoming, the breakfast room was dirty and they were already clearing away 30 minutes early - I felt like an inconvenience. Not a good end to the stay.
The location of this hotel is brilliant, and the staff were friendly and professional. We also loved the rooftop terrace and pool. The room was nice and clean but small for two people with full size luggage. Mattress is due for replacement as there was a lot of movement from the slightest repositioning of a person during sleep. The big issue for us was that Axel Madrid restricts wifi to 3 devices. All other hotels where we stayed in Europe, including Spain, did not restrict wifi in this way, allowing us to have 5 devices connected between two people with the network speed never slowing down. Another issue, which may be more challenging for Axel to resolve, is that you may not get mobile coverage from your room, which meant I had to go out on the street for phone calls. Despite some issues we would stay again.
The hotel is in a great location. Easy to walk to everywhere. The room was spacious and the air con, WiFi and mini bar all fantastic. The set up of the bathroom is one to be aware of if you are not in a couple. The toilet is almost at the end of the bed and only separated by a glass door so doesn’t leave much privacy.Despite the location and the nature of the hotel the room was really quiet even at night so it was very restful.
The location was great, style was interesting and bold, and the staff was exceptionally friendly and helpful. But, the beds were very hard and the hotel was generally very noisy. I also wasnt aware that it was a hotel that caters to the LGBTQ+ community. I felt a little like I was in a space where I wasnt totally welcome with my hetero partner. Not by the staff (not at all by the staffbut the other guests. I get it, they want a space thats safe for them. I just wish the description here would have said, so I could have made a more educated decision about staying there or not.
Really enjoyed the stay! The rooftop bar & pool had a great atmosphere & music. Great fun for the 35 degree days. The breakfast had a good variety. The room was large and loved the rainbow shower but the bed was a bit too hard.
Wonderful time! Staff and room were fantastic. I just wish the pool had reserved seats for hotel guests and better quality toiletries. No washcloths were provided either. The bed was a little harder than we prefer and pillows were flat. Although some minor issues… Overall a great experience and will be back in the future! Wonderful staff & housekeeping worked around our unconventional schedule.
They charged me 26 euros for 2 breakfast that I never had and it’s taking me 4 calls and endless waiting time for them to revert the unauthorized charges. Plus it’s even crazy that they never even sent an invoice explaining the charge. Very similar situation to many comments here below. So it’s not the first time it happens. The management should fix those mistakes as they are annoying and time wasters for clients.
It was supposed to be a nice stay but was made really bad cos of the errors by reception. Before my checkout I went to the reception to pay my bill. I explained what I used a water from the mini bar yet the reception didn’t charge me right, then at the time of check I told the reception what had happened and then he adjusted the bill and I paid. By the time I reached home, my card was charged again for the mini bar. I called the reception, and they said, they will refund, 9 days gone past, emailed them again, I have been told to call my bank, I asked for proof of refund and no response, now I am having to keep chasing for my Money which the charged without a proper authorization.
Happy and very pleased about hotel choice. Great location, walking distance to all Madrid city centre and close to main train station.Nice room design, they’re great even though mine was interior, very clean and perfect temperature. It has everything you might need. My stay was lovely. Even though there was a glass of champagne as welcome. I couldn’t use the other facilities as massages and gym but sounds good. Rooftop with swimming pool just as cherry on top! Staff nice and welcoming.I’d come back for sure.
Great hotel with great location, room is very functional and LOVE LOVE the shower ! If you like extreme water pressure this is the shower you will never want to leave….just perfection. Only thing to be aware of is the mattress they are extremely hard, great for back sleepers only. All front or side sleepers (like methis will be your mattress from hell. Didn’t get a good night sleep and had body aches everywhere (thank god for the shower and it’s water pressure for massageas an hotelier myself I don’t understand this choice of mattress that will only please a few customers.
First with the positives, the location is excellent and everything is within walking distance. The hotel however, was unclean and unpractical. The room we were given on arrive was dirty, with snot on the walls which was especially concerning during a pandemic, and the air conditioning didnt work in the height of summer. The reception staff were friendly though and were able to move us to another room, albeit the next day.The rooms in general are okay, but the showers/toilets are right opposite the bed and are fully glazed so theres no privacy at all!
