111 Sturt St, Southbank VIC 3006, Australia, Bundoora
Architecturally notable building featuring contemporary art exhibits & events, plus a bookshop.
Great place which exhibits cut of the edge artworks!
Great current exhibition Paul Yore, Word Made Flesh. Beautifully displayed. Wonderful spaces and great collection. Thank you for bringing this work to Melbourne.
Interesting and free museum.Highly recommend the first level upstairs...Still Life! Beautiful!
Went yesterday to see Paul Yores exhibition, great exhibition, love the building with great and informed staff. My first time but wont be my last.
I am not a fan of this style of art...but Yore ticks many currently politically correct boxes so he gets a voice - not available to me. Good on em!
One of the best new art musem what I have saw in my life.
So grateful to have this space in Melbourne. Never fails to provide something of interest and I commend the programmers for their bravery.Today it was the Paul Yore survey. Amazing work, but also well presented. It didnt feel like it was fighting the venue for space. The commissioned piece is such a good idea - an exclamation point to finish off the journey.
Friendly beautiful place with wonderful art installations.
Good place for exhibition but quite small
ACCA is an art gallery specialized on modern arts and located in the South bank. The building itself is a piece of impressive architecture. The exhibition space is not too large but the one I went to see was well curated. The site includes facilities for performing arts: modern dance and The Malthouse theater.
An icon for many reasons. A must see place that has presented local Australian Artists for decades. It’s original home was at Domain House near the Botanical Gardens. ACCA is synonymous with thought provoking, context driven, aesthetic historical grounding art , art practices and curatorial pre eminence.PUT IT ON YOUR CALENDER FOR AN ART DAY TOUR. it’s neighbours are both the NGV’s, Margaret Lawrence at the Victorian College of the Arts, Vault ❤️, and Buxton Contemporary. Go for it
Great space but the exhibitions were a slight let down. Obviously subjective but I expected to find more.
Opening times are unreliable, and so you may waste your time getting there only to discover it is closed. I went today - the official website said “open 10am-5pm” but when I arrived the doors were locked with a sign saying closed until 2pm. Those managing ACCA should get their opening hours sorted out and then stick to them, update on their website, and stop disrespecting visitors by wasting our time.
Nice but not my favorite, the sounds gave me a headache i didn’t stay for long
Amazing show by glass blower
The Australian Centre For Contemporary Art (ACCAis a contemporary art gallery in Melbourne, Australia. The gallery is located on Sturt Street in the Melbourne Arts Precinct, in the inner suburb of Southbank. Designed by Wood Marsh Architects, the building was completed in 2002. It incorporates facilities for Chunky Move, ACCA and the Malthouse Theatre. In December 2015, Max Delany was announced as the new Artistic Director of ACCA, replacing the outgoing Artistic Director Juliana Engberg.ACCA consists of four large gallery spaces, and together with the neighbouring Malthouse Theatre and ACCA form a courtyard at the centre of the complex which is used as an outside performance and exhibition space. The building also includes two rehearsal studios and an administration facilities for dance company Chunky Move as well as a large set construction facility for the Malthouse.Openings in the distinctive rusty steel façade are kept to a minimum to support a broad array of installations, temporary and digitally projected work, which contrasts with the inter-pressed metal and glass surfaces in the interior. The design references the European model of the Kunsthalle, acting as a flexible shell for the display of art.In its first decade, ACCA had already commissioned over 200 new works by both Australian and International Artists. Every year ACCA commissions six or seven new Australian artists for exhibition. Featured Australian artists have included Pat Brassington, Patricia Piccinini, alongside international artists such as Martin Creed, Barbara Kruger, Tacita Dean, Jenny Holzer and Joseph Kosuth. ACCA also presents many thematic exhibitions, as well as public art through initiatives such as the Big Wall project.Following the completion of construction, the infamous sculpture Vault by Ron Robertson-Swann was relocated to the buildings forecourt, where it remains today.
Nice tiny place, its small, total of four big rooms with a few art work, it is worth a visit. When I was there they were renovating a part of the museum so I couldnt get to see it all.It is recommended if youre walking passed.Entry is free.
Thought provoking gallery showcasing Australian artists. Although i struggled to understand one of the exhibits, the plaques on the wall were very informative. My favourite installation was one decided of pulleys and charcoal and it created art on the way that was constantly evolving. Its not a big place, but well worth a visit. You can also tap and donate as well.
A wonderful art gallery. High quality art and informative staff. Well worth a visit.
Free contemporary art gallery with rotating exhibitions. Good use of light and space. Welcoming staff. Very artsy.
Visit during the special exhibition called “Feedback Loop”, the exhibition is much tinier in size than expected, people who are interested in Japanese or Korean manga/game culture might be thrilled.
Great place to get a contemporary art fix. They close on Sundays and Mondays. The coffee cart has great coffee too. Free entrance makes it even better!!
Great feedback loop exhibit. Small cafe is good too. Clean toilets.
A very interesting and dynamic exhibition currently on show inside. The building itself is worth going to for people who love good architecture - a beautiful design.
Free entry.... Great bldg and friendly staff but small exhibition area and limited exhibits (usually 1 or 2 artists by the looks of things), if the running artist not to your taste, you wont be there long.
Good to give myself chance to visit ACC. an Australian flagship contemporary art space, and a leading centre for the artistic and wider communities to participate in a critically engaged contemporary art culture, to see how it encourages curiosity and transformation.
Love the unique design of the building! We dont quite understand modern art, luckily the staff there is extremely helpful, she spends lots of time to explain the artwork to us. Will definitely visit it again
Great space but VERY small. Would have loved to see a bigger selection of contemporary art. That being said, what is on display is definitely good food for thought and it is a good little stopover on your way to other things.
Always free with great contemporary Australian and international artists. Stunning space with amazing exterior and a massive inside gallery hall, with three smaller ones. Great coffee stall available in the front entrance with profits going towards funding the gallery. Love coming here when Im in the area!
Small exhibition space and exceptional use of white space. Mixed media including video. Nice all gender bathrooms.
Excellent place for viewing contemporary art, both local and international artists. Not the biggest museum but more quality than quantity and totally free!
Despite the gallery being relatively small compared to the other exhibitions around the area, they have very interesting collections of contemporary arts.
Id been out with big Tony the night before and needed some time to get my head right before afternoon meetings. Turns out ACCA is ideal. Giant beanbags and some compelling video installations. Paired with an icy water and I was soon ready to rumble
Im always surprised when friends of mine who live in Melbourne tell me that theyve never been to the Australian Centre for Contemporary Art. Located just outside the CBD, this free gallery exhibits some really striking and impressive contemporary art, by celebrated artists from around the globe.
The gallery is a bit smaller for presenting contemporary art. the arrangements and attendance cannot be said as the best one but with beautiful artworks installed, they can be overlooked
Love the place and exhibition! Great range of catalogues too.
Unique architecture, super friendly staff members, clean museum, capacity is very small, but with an overall satisfied experience. Would recommend. Free admissions.
Amazing building UNIQUE, the two galleries are ideal for in depth examination of varied multi_form artistic practices
Huge variety of exhibits .make sure you go to the ones you favour. Prob 5hrs if u look and read everything.Well worth the time. + its free entry
Disaster. Had to walk around it twice to find the entrance. Inside entrance there’s a sign saying they’re closed for the day. Had checked opening hours on google before I visited, which gallery hadn’t updated. Carston (Utopia fans will know what I meanthinkers will see it as a great success...experience for me was ridiculous. Still, found the Buxton gallery as a result...that was inspiring!
Exhibitions are usually great but I swear this place used to be much bigger. It seems so small inside now. The arcitecture of the building is amazing from the outside and there is a restaurant bar just next to it in the courtyard, as well as a coffee cart at the entrance to the centre. Staff are a bit snobby but thats normal for art centres I think unfortunately. Large variety of art books for sale. Bathroom facilities are nice and new.
Its a place just tucked in behind the school of art. It can be a bit sterile however take the plunge and stretch your concept of art.
very cutting edge exhitbion so sometime it is hard to understand but well worth a visit.
This is a relatively small 3-room gallery near the National Gallery (internationalbuilding. If youre in the area, its an interesting way to kill 10 minutes, but I wouldnt make the trip out to this (freegallery, unless youre a diehard modern art student.
Stark, earthy and beautiful architecture with varied and interesting art spaces in the one complex. The actual gallery space proved to be somewhat small and limited.
Great venue with high-quality exhibitions.
I went there on Dec 11, 2016 in the opening hour, but the main entrance was locked, no announcement on the door whether it was open or not. I saw the light was on inside the building,, so I tried to call them to ask,, but nobody picked up the phone.. It was me and my son, and 3 more couples waited outside the building for around 20minutes.. We all then finally left and I was heading to NGV.. Really unacceptable..
This is one of my favourite galleries in the world. I love its scale, curation, and in particular their annual NEW exhibition—its one Id never miss and always recommend.
Free entry... Has 5-6 rooms for exhibitions...when I visited in Feb-16, the art items on display were Ok; I didnt like them much..a new exhibition will start from 5-March-16. Lets see...
Interested in contemporary art? Then ACCA is a great place to visit if you are in Melbourne. Actually, its a must.I have seen some great works at ACCA and I would encourage you to check it out. Its also worth the trip just to walk around the outside of the building (which I think I did once when we turned up and it was closed).
