Aughrim Interpretative Centre in Ros Comain
Description
It was closed but plenty signs to walk round battle field I was there 3 hrs
MoreIt was very nice and informative. Thank you
Went here on a whim when returning to Dublin from galway City, just myself and my son, it was a really enjoyable experience, the venue though small has some fantastic displays and assortment of historical artifacts to view, the person who was working today was very informative and helpful and I would recommend for any history enthusiast.
MoreInformative and detailed tour around a fascinating piece of Irish history. Very friendly and knowledgeable team, highly recommend a visit 😊
MoreIts ok but you need to explore the area
A bit too expensive for what theres to see. The video dates back to 1993 and it doesnt have been updated or improved... It was nice to learn what happened during the battle but Id have like to see a more modern display.
MoreTells the history of the battle away back in the 1600s not a big place but a lot of history to be told
MoreCalled in here on way to Spiddal.Very welcoming, well informed staff..Learned a lot from this really well put together exhibition. Well done to all involved..it really is a credit to you all..We can highly recommend a visit
MoreVery interesting.
Well worth a visit
Giant Aughrim battlefield layout game in centre.
Excellent centre and village. This battle was won and lost by the Irish and lost and won by the invading forces under the English flag. Each side lost about 4,000 combatants. A proper gravel path to the large cross dedicated to the French general Luke and remains of the significant remains of a castle should be a priority.
MoreWas recommended to come over from Portumna and am glad we did. A lovely little centre which highlights lesser known aspects - but key elements - of Irish history.
MoreIt was closed
Great History
The Battle of Aughrim was the decisive battle of the Williamite War in Ireland. It was fought between the Jacobite Irish Army and the forces of William III on 12 July 1691, near the village of Aughrim, County Galway. The battle was one of the more bloody recorded fought on Irish soil – over 7,000 people were killed. WikipediaIt changed the course of Irish history for the worse.Unfortunately the centre is closed for the winter but the village is worth visiting and the signage is good
MoreGreat place to learn about the Battle, Aughrim as a lively small village with some amazing people.
MoreVisited the place having been to the nearby Workhouse and was happy we made the time. The young lady there was delightful and took us on a one-on-one tour. A great place to spend an afternoon and broaden your knowledge of Irish history.
MoreVery friendly staff. Good model from which it was easy to follow the course of the battle.
MoreA must visit for history buffs
Was lucky enough to visit the centre during the summer when it was open and really enjoyed the day. This is an important historical site (in understanding modern Irelandand should be visited by as many schools in the region as possible.
MoreThird time to visit and still didnt get in. This time notice on door saying it will reopen in Summer 2018. Galway County Council what on earth is going on here, why not get someone in on a scheme if ye are too mean to pay someone
MoreMuy interesante el museo. Si te gusta la historia es el lugar ideal para volver al pasado. Lo único que tienen folletos en muchos idiomas excepto en Castellano. Por lo demás, genial.
MoreDidnt get to see inside the interpretive centre as it doesnt open until 2pm on Bank holiday but there is a lovely garden in the grounds at the back of the centre.
MoreReally friendly staff, a great experience.
Well worth a visit .. Staff very helpful and a fountain of information on the battle itself plus great artifacts from the period on display
MoreThe Kelly Clan Association held a recent Council meeting at the centre in preparation for our bi-annual gathering which is being held at Castlecourt Hotel, Westport, Co May on the weekend of 15-17 May. The centre facilitated us admirably and supplied us with refreshments. We were also able to "skype" our members in USA and Australia while at the meting. We visited the Kelly Clan native oak tree in the gardens nearby which was planted in memory of the fallen at the Battle of Aughrim; the tree is thriving and looking healthy. We had a walk around the environs of the historic village of Aughrim which was most interesting. We will be returning again in the near future. Many thanks to Julie Cruise for looking after us so well and organsiing everything for us.
