Athenry Heritage Centre - Heritage museum in Ros Comain, Ireland
Amazing discovery. Can only recommand ! (History - battles - medieval times - costumes)Longer version here :As students it was cheap (4.5€ each), interesting and well explained (even when youre not fluent). You get a lovely experience to learn the medieval local irish (and englishculture and history and that with costumes on (you all get to wear one if you want to and take pictures ! It is an experience of a lifetime). The guides are very nice too. So if you go to Anthenry just stop by, it is worth it ! We loved it
Docents are passionate and well spoken. Exhibits are accessible and carefully thought out. All in all a great experience
We had a great time there. The hosts were super friendly. The tour guide gave us a lot of interesting info.Love it!
The tour here is extremely well-done and very informative. The tour guides are wonderful and you can really see how passionate they are about the local history. This is a must-visit for anyone wanting to learn about Irish history
This is a wonderful attraction for teenage children as it has expert guidance at all stages of involvement with medieval history and activiities The archery is super and the maze is a must for all . It was just a great experience all round for my group.
We have been to the Athenry Heritage Centre for birthday parties and their annual Christmas event. The staff try their best to make the experience the most enjoyable for the children as possible.I would highly recommend a visit if you are in the Athenry Area.
Visited the Athenry Heritage centre today with my family, it was a quite time and we had a tour and place to ourselves which is unusual for them but great for us, we had a great day, as well as learning about the history of the very preserved town and what it would have looked like, we got to dress up and try our hand at archery 🏹the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable and I would recommend this for all ages ,especially families .
Had a delightful time here and learned about the area. Also learned some great trivia stuff about old saying. Worth the price I’d admission.
Wonderful for a school trip. Great fun for all.
Enjoyed this inexpensive experience for the family. Got to get dressed up and learn about the towns heritage. My boys loved the archery competition at the end.
Having heard Ryan Tubridy wax lyrical on the radio about it, my wife decided to visit from Galway City the very next day to be greeted by a sign on the door " Closed for private event".
This should be the starting place of your tour of the city, which is really remarkable with a long history. The tour is in a small area within an old church packed full of interesting history and insight from deeply knowledgeable guides. Its also very tangible -they allow you to touch and handle several items like swords and helmets. Try to also make sure to go when the castle itself is open. The heritage center has a restroom/toilet for people taking the tour.
Myself and wife had a amazing experience in the Athenry Heritage Centre highly recommended. The staff were just amazing, Mary dressed us up as king & Queen, Helen was our story guide and what a job she did, explained all about ancient History of Athenry. Then Mary brought us out to try the Archery and show us how to use the bow and arrow on a target 🎯 then myself and the wife had a little competition, it was a great experience.
The hostess seemed well informed and enjoyed giving the tour, lots of information and details. The museum was small and seemed too fake though it was used to support the historical aspects. It wasnt quite what Id expected.
Beautiful little heritage museum with really friendly and helpful staff. Everything is brilliantly explained and displayed. Hopefully youll even get to meet their resident cat too.
Brilliant time, staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. The extra for costume and archery is well worth it.
Amazing had a blast on Saturday will be back again 😁
Cool place and excellent staff
This is a wonderful experience for all the family to become immersed in! We wandered in off the street not knowing what to expect and can honestly say every one of us (mam, dad and children 8 & 9 yearstotally enjoyed it! We had just visited the castle (worth a visit tooand a lovely lady there directed us to the heritage centre. We got dressed up (clothing made by our wonderful tour guide no lessand the said wonderful tour guide engaged every one of us with her description of all aspects of life in a medieval town. Then we were brought to try our hand at archery which again we ALL loved, thanks again to the wonderful tour guide. Im sorry I didnt catch her name. If youre in Athenry or looking for something different, this is worth a visit. Highly recommended.
We were a party of 6 Adults visiting here. The guide was fantastic, he was great humoured, friendly And we learnt lots about the Athenry of old.We got to dress up in costumes We were knights ,court jester , peasants and even an excutioner. Then we did the Archery again great fun. Then finished up by doing the maze.A really super day for Adults or children ,And its all for the absolutly amazing price of just 5 euro each.
Visited Santa here. Decorations were amazing, floor to ceiling covered.
A nice medieval place for a visit
Visited for their Santa Experience! Lovely lay out and very relaxed atmosphere. Would recommend their Santa to anyone!
Winter wonderland was absolutely amazing.
Very nice place!
We saw Santa here and it was fantastic. It was plain to be seen that a huge effort had been made to decorate the place and it looked wonderful. The activities of cookie making, flower planting and decoration making were a great addition. Would definitely visit again
We had a wonderful time at the Heritage Center in Athenry!! The staff is very friendly and patient, it’s a great place for families with kids. Beautiful costumes and interesting history. We enjoyed the Archery very much. It’s worth every euro and more.
Excellent kids party venue. Great staff that keep the kids entertained
Visited the Heritage Centre at Athenry after Portumna and the two compliment each other so well. Real effort put in here to make the experience memorable. Recommended.
Interesting and fun place to visit!
Nice place in a great setting
Very nice heritage centre. There is the option to get dressed up in medieval clothes. Very nice and knowledge guides also.
One of the places that is missed as you go from Galway to Dublin. Take the detour to Athenry and immerse yourself in some of the history of Ireland. The restored castle is a great place to start your tour. You will be amazed at how historical Athenry is.
We went here to visit Santa. It was truly such an enjoyable experience. It was a winter wonderland and both my children (age 10years and 18monthshad a ball. The staff were fabulous and the Santa was lovely. Look forward to visiting here again.
Great place to learn about the history of Athenry.
Closed to the public we travelled a long way very disappointed 😣
A fun little place to visit with knowledgeable guides, a scale model of the village as it was and various bits of medieval history. Took less than an hour. Note its in the middle of town so no parking on site but plenty nearby.
Worth a stop if you are in the Athenry area
A memorable experience, beatiful place and a very kind welcome by Mary. A great mediaeval centre!
Great for families with small kids, lovely staff, everything explained really well an great fun experience.
Perfect spot for family day out/ Birthday party
Excellent.Surprised that its a place for kids entertainment. Will definitely go again with kids.
We had so much fun. Our guide was informative and playful. We loved trying on the armor and weapons. Were very used to museums being like "dont touch the things!" and they were like "touch all the things!" Haha. We loved it. I would definitely recommend it.
Enjoyable, with a wide range of heritage costumes to suit all occasions at very reasonable prices, a definite must,,,,
Found this little gem while driving on the way back from Galway to Dublin. Paid for the upgraded ticket for €8 which included an informative personal tour, dress up in medieval gear and shooting real bow and arrows. A unique and fun experience.
Great place to visit. Steep in local history. Staff are very friendly and know there stuff.
Fun tour. Allowed us to wear armor!
Great medieval experience, really interactive, worth the detour off the motorway for a break a.d some fun.
Great place, a wealth of information from the woman working there.
