Asylum Ghost Tours - Tourist attraction in Wangaratta, Australia
We visited as a family on the night tour. I was hoping to feel some paranormal activity but rather felt saddened by the stories told of how the patients were treated. Our tour guide was quite in character and had a lot of knowledge of the history of the asylum. My son (16yearswho had also visited Ararat J Ward felt that this sometimes took away from what was being said in comparison to a tour guide retelling history but ended it never less. Although I didn’t give any shivers we were surprised when looking back at photos that my husband and I captured some images that can’t be explained.A great tour of a historical building. Would recommend.
Pretty creepy. Good stories, didnt see a ghost though. 👻
Very overpriced, a blatant rip off and tourist trap. The ghost theme was stupid. Especially for people that dont beleive in ghosts. It was not historical or factual enough, and you couldnt see much of the buildings in the dark. Aradale mental assylum in Ararat is way cheaper, much more informative and is a larger assylum with many more things to see. Aradale tour is $20 adults and $18 concession for a 2 hour tour, making it way better value! Its best to go in daytime so you can see more.Forget beechworth assylum ghost tours I was so disappointed and wish Id never bothered with it!
The tour guide was lovely and funny and the history of the place was great, one h of a walk! 5000 steps on my padomiter only down side was it was a little gimmicky - an autopsy table from a different hospital in a room that never had autopsies done in it, a nursery with models of kids playing despite only one 5 year old who left afe a week in a room that never had kids in it (why not have toys in the mens workshop where they built things like thatalso the tunnels mb keep that on the dL till you actually know
It was fun doing the ghost tour, this place is creepy
Visited the Asylum this weekend, both during the day just for a walk around, and at night as a ghost tour. Very eerie vibe and the tour guides ensure your safety, and have a lot of knowledge to the history of the facility. Would prefer to be allowed to have moments of quietness and time to explore the building rather than constant talking. But I would definitely go back.
Night tour was good but the young lady doing the tour should of started by telling people that the building has people actually living there and to tell them not to shine their torches into windows..No one on our tour bar my group knew that.
It was not so much fun or scary for me but i give 5 stars because i learnt a lot about old days lifestyles, there were a bunch of teenagers in the tour thats enjoyed it a lot and they loved it
Our tour guide Elizabeth had lots of knowledge about the asylum and was an amazing story teller, it was a shame the young girls were being inconsiderate and disrespectful to the other people trying to enjoy the tour
Went for a paranormal experience last night and got just that! Had a ghost touch my cheek, lots of unexplained noises even heard a spirit exhaling right in front of us highly recommended 👌
12/08/20225 stars.I went on the twilight ghost tour and the guide was passionate, energetic and very theatrical in telling the history of the place, making it a very enjoyable experience. After that, I went on the paranormal investigation. This was my second time doing it and I have to say, it was a massive improvement on the first one I went on (see below review from earlier this year). I absolutely loved it this time. There was heaps of activity from the very beginning and the guide (I think it was Paul?was amazing, open minded and even asked us where wed like to go. Ill definitely be back again in the future.01/04/20221 Star for the paranormal investigation.4 stars for the history tour. In fact, Id love to give 5 stars for the history tour alone. The bad:I did a 3hr paranormal investigation and although the place is eerie at night and there are definitely spirits still there, the tour guide just ruined it for me. There were ridiculous antics where he made jokes about the spirits, he had scientific explanations for everything (which ruined the whole PARANORMAL aspect), had over the top reactions to things, as well as a complete and utter disregard and disrespect for any of the spirits that were responding to the ghost meters and various items that were used. The guide was egotistic and yelled at the ghosts and when they didnt do what he wanted, he taunted and antagonised them. He is, hands down, the worst tour guide Ive ever met. Ive been on a lot of tours around Victoria and NSW and none of them were this bad.The good:Fortunately, I had a chance to chat to the owner about my experience, who was very kind and took time out of their day to hear me out, which I really appreciate. The history tour (during the dayis a must! Especially before you do any ghost tours or paranormal investigations! The lovely guide was dressed in period garb and looked the part. Turned out that she had experience as a nurse, so that helped a lot.She was very knowledgeable and passionate about the history of the Asylum/hospital and was able to tell some wonderful stories about some of the more positive outcomes of the horrid period of healthcare. I cant recommend this enough!Overall, although Ive tried not to let the paranormal investigation ruin the highlight that was the history tour, Im left with a meh feeling.
Amazing tour guide .Well worth visiting for paranormal experience.
A fun and spooky night out! Interesting history and stories about how people were treated in this facility. Highly recommended!
Did the night tour and loved the emphasis on the history of the asylum! The tour guide was very knowledgeable and provided a number of eerie ghost stories throughout the night. Unlike some other ghost tours there was no reliance on cheap thrills and a high level of respect was shown to those who once resided.
Did the ghost tour and it was absolutely fantastic. Our tour guide (Adrian I thinkwas in character and did an incredible job getting information out in a captivating way. The asylum itself was so interesting yet heartbreaking at the same time, definitely a must do when visiting Beechworth. Would come again in a flash!
i only came here on Christmas to look around because i find all this stuff fascinating and my great grandma used to come to the asylum because she wasn’t all there, but ever since then, a lot of stuff has been happening at my home like pictures falling off the wall, really loud whispers, etc, so i’d just say proceed with caution
Really enjoyed the tour, even though I was freezing! Elizabeth was a fantastic tour guide
Amazing history thoughtfully presented with a hint of humour and playfulness suited to our group - Tyson did a wonderful job. My husband, daughter and I most certainly encountered Matron Elizabeth and my daughter and I encountered a lantern like light held by what looked to be an outline of a woman.Only detraction was flash lights in the eyes from other inconsiderate participants but that’s not the fault of the tour guide - will look at a private tour next time.Amazing place, steeped in history - very much worth a visit
Attended a ghost tour last night. Fascinating place. The guide did a fantastic job!! He was a highlight!! Well worth a visit.
Was mediocre to be honest. Felt more like a historical tour than a ghost tour. Did not see anything and didnt feel anything. There was a part of the tour where the guide would ask you to look into a hallways, turn your light off and see a light at the end of the hallway. She would then say that there is a figure or a child at the end of the hallway. No matter how I look, did not see anything lol. Guess the ghosts were still asleep when we went there lol😅
It was okay. Too much focus on trying to make people laugh rather than experience any ghosts or activity. I’ve done many ghost tours around Vic and this wasn’t my favourite. Some interesting information was provided though.
It was absolutely amazing our tour guide Tyson did a great job on the history of it all .very sad as to why people became to be there though.well worth a tour
What an amazing experience we had tonight. We have been on many Asylum and Gaol tours around Vic, and this one was certainly the best. Laura, our tour guide was super knowledgable and was just overall wonderful. I personally had an experience that I won’t forget, and am not comfortable returning anytime soon, but I recommend it to everyone. Thanks for a great time!
Not a bad night out. Tour guide definitely had deep understanding of the asylum, its history and the going-ons. Didnt see any ghosts or have any kind of interactions with them but I suppose you cant expect these sorts of things. Would like to have seen more of the complex, perhaps the day tour wouldve suited me better. All up, definitely worth checking out.
Had the best experience ever and will go again in a heartbeat. Our guide Paul was fantastic and eased my nerves and made me embrace it instead of fearing it. Telling all my friends who believe to make sure they go🖤
Behaviour of our guide really took away from the experience. On the night time ghost tour, guide pretends/acts in character as an insane superintendent of the asylum, I dont find imitating tourette syndrome funny or relevant, and dont enjoy use of gendered language "ladies and gentlemen".I understand this can be explained away as historically in character or unimportant, but it certainly detracted from enjoyment of experience.Historically cool place, we saw lots of stuff across different buildings and at least we got to hear about the history, I would recommend exploring in your own time. They offer a "historical" tour, maybe that one will be educational without being uncomfortable, potentially a better option.
The Ghost tour was great, would have been 5 stars if it werent for all the giggling teenagers - the guide kept asking them to be quiet, it wouldve been better if they were told they would have to leave if not silent. Its a shame as it really ruined the vibe for a lot of the group with their constant disturbances.
I didnt do the tour just looked around the grounds on my own. Its beautiful and I truly love it there. We look every time we go to Beechworth
The Mayday Ghost tours have the perfect backdrop/setting for an awesome night. For us, the tour of the old Mayday Mental Hospital in Beechworth was packed for of information giving insight into how poorly people of the past were treated in these facilities however the information was simply setting the scene for what I would have to say was a theatrical masterpiece for our tour guide. The tour guide (Adrianwas in character, engaging the group getting everyone involved which made the already perfect setting even better.Unfortunately we didn’t encounter any supernatural beings but I do believe that if there were ever going to be ghosts a place like Mayday would be the location. It is the type of tour for adults and children and everyone will be entertained and have a good time.
Was a fun tour, mix of history and spookyness. Host was entertaining and kept our kid on his toes. Definatly want to come back and do the late night tour.
Very informative history tour. Laura the tour guide was terrific and clearly was not only knowledgeable front of a history perspective, but was emotional intelligent ensuring we left with a good understanding of the human side of the story. Highly recommended
The ghost tour was very interesting, our guide was funny & informative. Really worth visiting
We had a interesting experience here at Beechworth Asylum ghost tour. When we where in the old Hospital section my wife said when we were listening to the story about how people would be laying on the beds where we were, She had an acute pain in the stomach and was feeling she needed to go to the toilet urgently, "I told her to just wait awhile." All good, she then told me she could see a figure lying on one of the beds. After all this we went back to the foyer where the tour starts, she quickly goes off to the toilet, false alarm nothing. So what we think is we had an interaction at the Hospital section. In summary we will go back and do a paranormal tour next time.
I would.like to share my appreciation of this company ensuring Duty of Care and having all tour groups wear masks as per COVID-19 rules ensuring the health and safety of myself and my husband in particular who have medical conditions.Amazing history tour of Beechworth Asylum and paranormal investigation later that night!!!! Loads of activity and amazing tour guides for the day and night tours.
Experience the 3hr paranormal investigation. The buildings are absolutely amazing & you can certainly feel the sadness of this place. The investigation was very good.
Interesting tour. Teens loved it too. No ghosts seen by us, but a couple of rooms that made the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. Lots of stories of time gone by.
Absolutely fantastic! The tour is worth it and recommended.Guides are amazing and the owners are extremely helpful and friendly.
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!! The owners go above and beyond to provide a memorable experience. Words can not describe what these wonderful people have done to preserve a moment in history. The owners and tour guides make this fun and positive in every sense of the word.If you’re looking for accurate descriptions of history or you’re wanting to cure your curiosity into the paranormal world, this is the place to go.Can’t wait to go back to see what else has been unearthed.
Ive been twice and both times have been fantastic. Highly recommend this tour for a good night with friends, interesting stories and something different. They have passionate, friendly and knowledgeable guides. The staff have always been accommodating with organising private bookings when my friends change their minds often and they are helpful to suggest places to stay in Beechworth, making each trip easy coming from Melbourne.Did we see a ghost? Well, a door closed on my cousin and played with her hair 😱Jeff and Bill were exceptional! Thank you!
This place is awesome! Went for a group tour with a bunch of my friends and it was bloody great! I recommend this place for any families or people passing through the area. The staff and tour guides get into character which made the experience all the more worth while! The 2 ladies we spoke to and that ran our tour had a great sence of humourThe grounds are well maintained which is hood to see for such old and historical buildingsUnfortunately we couldnt go down in the basement which is meant to be the scariest part but that was due to the covid 19 social distancing restrictions. Either way though, had an overall great experience. There are props and cool items to look at among entering as you are waiting for your tour to startAnother cool thing was that the tour guide tells you all about the history of every single ropm you enter. 110% reccomend
My first experience in this assylum was over 20yrs ago when I was setting up a wedding and I hadnt stepped foot in it since!! I took my daughter with me this time as she loves the spooky and scary stuff. Bronwyn our tour guide was awesome and extremely knowledgable. The tour was very informative and I definently recommend if paranormal activity interests you.
OK as you felt necessary to give me a sassy response I shall elaborate. it was OK, over embellished and over booked. Our tour guide was lovely, and told the history extremely well but I just felt it slid into generic ghost story territory too regularly when the true horror within the asylum was much more interesting. 🤷♂️ Sorry didnt take many photos inside, it was dark and I thought it might be rude.
I have done a lot of tours in my time of lunatic asylums and gaols. Beechworth has always been my favourite and I can without a shadow of a doubt strongly recommend touring here with Asylum Ghost Tours. Extremely professional operation, highly knowledgeable and without gimmicks you can sometimes find touring these establishments. This tour is highly respectful of guests, site and most importantly the former residents who back in their time were without a voice to tell their story.
Amazing tour and very knowledgeable tour guide. Amazing history and well worth every cent. Well done. Highly recommended.
Incredible tour of a fascinating place, rich with a sad history. The grounds and buildings have been well preserved, so you can see much of what it looked like when it was used as a "lunatic asylum". The guide was extremely knowledgeable and told us stories about patients and staff along the way. There was plenty of time to walk around each room/building to have a really good look and take photos. You can also drive or walk around the premises and enjoy the beautiful gardens outside of tour times. What I appreciated the most was the sensitivity of staff towards mental health issues. They took opportunities to point out how far we have come in mental health care compared to what treatment was like in the days of the asylum, but also to reflect on the fact that people were only doing what they knew to be best with the limited knowledge they had back then. It was really lovely that these human beings from the past were given such dignity.
100% worth the price! Our guide Bronwyn was very knowledgeable and engaging, and the asylum itself is mystifying. Even though nobody in my family believes in ghosts/spirits, we all still had a great time. The tour was just the right length at 1.5 hours. Would recommend to anyone!
We did the paranormal investigation 3 hour tour and explored much of the asylum. Theres hundreds of rooms and using the supplied equipment, we got many positive results from the resident spirits. Not for the feint of heart. Great fun though.
Enjoyed the tour. Havent been for a long time. Hot tip; go with someone sensitive to the paranormal, it adds to the experience.
Awesome had an amazing time and the guide was brilliant.there is a couple of different tours they offer and Im going to try and do them all well worth the trip up there for that five stars
Asylum was awesome. Great and not so great history of the hospital and its patients. Very fortunate we are living in more enlightened times. Tour definately worth doing.
