Archaia Olympia 270 65, Greece, Pyrgos
Ancient sanctuary & birthplace of the Olympic Games, with sculptures including Nike of Paionios.
Very pleasant to explore the site at this time of the year. (late Sept). Allow around 2-3 hours to explore the ancient grounds at a leisurely pace, best in the late afternoon.12EUR for adults. There is a free self walking tour app available so bring your earphones. The entire site has free WIFI. The tour is pretty informative.Site is well maintained and very clean. The walk is easy, on flat ground. Did not notice any toilets within the site so go before entering the site.
Historical home of ancient Olympics. We visited it in mid September 2022. We used the app provided by the site which was very helpful. A tour guide may not be necessary if you use the app. You should allocate about two hours for a visit to the site. Pro tip - buy tickets for entry ahead of time, don’t miss the Olympic stadium and make sure to do a victory lap!
Lots to see and digest at once if youre truly interested in the history of this place. Plan to dedicate an entire day to get the full experience as the entry fee covers 2 museums plus the archaeological site. Just make sure to visit on a cloudy or cool day as walking around ancient ruins isnt very fun in +30C heat.
A place that u have to see one time in life!!!Really awesome!!!Super suggest it and all the city is super clean and the archeological sites are well manteined!!!
Well laid out. Would like to have had better maps to read while touring.
Great site with so many things to look at. To help you visualize the site as it was consider visiting the museum first.
With all of the history this is an interesting place to explore. It was larger than I expected but an easy level walk throughout. The stadium was impressive from its size and the overall history. The view from the upper sides near the entrance gives a good view of its scale. The museum is definitely worth the time with some important bronze works.
Beautiful historic place. Visit the museum first to imagine how the Olympia buildings were!
Very well preserved archaeological site. Well organized and very impressive to visit. The feeling you get, as you realize that here took place the Olympic games that long ago is unique. My opinion is that you shouldnt miss to visit. All the place can be visited on foot, you can book a guide if you wish. Keep in mind the heat, so equip with a hat and cold water (unfortunately the shop just outside didnt have water - and my "lucky" guess it never has).
Well worth the trip. Get the archeological site and the two museum ticket to experience it all. Spent at least two hours reading the information and viewing the ancient structures and art. This is where the Olympic games started. So much history.
Great family day out to the birth place of the Olympic games.
Cute little port with Venetian charm. Packed with tourists, though.
Beautiful site, so glad we made a detour to see it. Quite a drive to get here, but well worth it. Although it was hot and we arrived at 5pm, there was shade and the ground was mostly flat. There were docents everywhere but also maps and short descriptions of each section. It is an incredible feeling, standing amongst the buildings where the first Olympics were held (and also finding out it was built on the ruins of a Neolithic village). Plan to spend at least 2 hours.
Very Interesting Area for History Buffs; and for those with sports interests, the birthplace of the Olympics is a must see.
Amazing ancient history in this truly unique place! Awesome, inspiring, wonderful!
A bit chaotically decided, this sight mostly relied on its historical significance. The guidance needs a lot of improvement and the explanations were very lacking
An excellent place to visit for an insight into ancient history
We love this archaeological site. You can touch the old stones, run like old Greek do…
Brought my kids here so they could compete head to head for me and my wifes love. Decided to take pictures instead.
The birth place of the first Olympics wow a lot of walking but informative...
Its a beautiful Place, full of emotions wherever you look. You can Imagine athlets running, using giavelots, going on chariots. You can also Imagine how differenti was the Life in ancient Greece. The Olympic Games took place here every four years from 776 BC to 393 AD. In Olympia you feel a champion! The Archeological Museum Is really interesting and full of statues, methops and other marble works.
Nice place for visitBe aware that this is 4.5 hours from Athens by public transport
Amazing archaeological place for everyone to visit, see and learn where the Olympic Games were born.
Another must see on our travels. We were there pretty early and it was crowded but not crazy crowded. We had a guide and she was very good. You really need a guide to understand what you are looking at. Paraphrasing we learned gymnasium is from the word on Latin meaning naked. All the Olympians practiced and fought naked. No women were allowed to be there except I believe a Queen? Very interesting.
A sanctuary dedicated to religion, culture and sports which flourished from the 10th century BC to 426 AD. It is still possible to see how majestic and beautiful the place should have been back at the time. There are the ruins of monuments and buildings build in the Archaic period, the Hellenistic and Roman Empire eras. Olympia is the birthplace of the Olympic games, which already started in the prehistoric times, and even nowadays the Olympic flame is lightened at the site whenever the games start. In my opinion the most impressive ruins are the ones of the Phillippeion (finished by Alexander The Great), the Temple of Zeus and the Palaestra. The ticket costs 12€ and it allows access to the archeological site and museum. There is WC and a cafeteria at the place. The visit will take some time. At least 2h to 3h if you would like to enjoy it the fullest.A site not to be missed for its important value in the worlds history.
An interesting site. The birth place of the Olympic games.Well worth the money!
Loved our visit to the site of Ancient Olympia, birthplace of the ancient Olympics, and several of the great temples of antiquity. The natural area is just beautiful and the museum was remarkable. We had a tour with a professional guide (Elena - outstanding!), which was a great way to get the full history.
Ok we docked our sailboat in Katakolo and didn’t even realize how close to Olympia we were, luckily looked up things to do and there is was a 35 min ride to Olimpia. One of the best archeological sites we’ve been to and the Archeological Museum was world class! Honestly you won’t be disappointed. It is a must see!🇬🇷 we went in May so very few people no line ups.
It was nice to walk around and learn all the historical things that happened here l.It was kind of busy with lots of kids on field trips. There is an option to rent a VR set but we didnt know about it which is a bummer, Im sure it would have been amazing to see everything better not just the ruins that remained.
What an amazing feeling, being to the place where the Olympic idea started, thousands of years before. Beautiful scenery, blended with ancient columns and ruins. The track were ancient athletes run is intact and gives you the chills! People run all over it, trying to get the vibes!! Definitely recommend this place for a visit!!
At €12 entry to the site and the two museums, this is excellent value! Well worth a visit even if you are not a history buff. NOTE: there is a series of drinking water taps just before you enter the archeological site. Well worth topping up your bottles as it can get very hot out there?
Magical place , full of history and ruins ,indicating importance of sport during antiquity. Man used to practice sport naked on the Olympic stadium and their winning trophy was olives leaf and head band.
First Olympics was here 3000~ years ago. Earthquakes and time have damaged much of it. But theres still so much to see and the restoration that has been done is incredible
go early, they close at 15:30.was fun imagening the olympian athlets sweating there thousands of years ago!
Not easily accessible and forest fire made it worse.i visited on Sep 21 which happened to be national free admission day. I’m guessing this was built before drama was invented hence no amphitheater here?
It is an area of ruins. Something you can see all over Greece. My tour guide made it interesting and was able to show what each area was and the history of it. Recommend having a guide if going. There are plakes you can read but it doesnt give the little details a guide can.
a bit underwhelming, wonderful vegetation but very litlle remains. My least favorite of all the sites i have seen in the Peloponnese. the museum on the other hand one is world-class, far more interesting than the ruins, a must-see
Highly recommend. This site contains temples to Zeus and his wife Hera. Its very easy to walk and theres a lot to see. When I got to the stadium where the games were held during ancient times, I saw people running, as if in a competition. I decided to also run in that space where previous champions ran. There is something awe inspiring about this.
Nice to see and hear about the ancient history of Olympia, the Olympics and Greek culture and history. Id advise to take an (audiotour otherwise it might all seem the same at some point.
So impressive to see the roots of Olympia. We witnessed the lightning of the Olympic Fire which actually seems to be more the demonstration for a Chinese delegation. The site itself is pretty large, you can visit the stadium as well as most of the ruins. Unfortunately the Temple of Zeus is not open to enter. A MUST VISIT BEING IN THIS REGION.
The history is soooo cool., But I did get in trouble for stepping on a rock (just a rock shaped rock). If you dont want people to step on rocks then put them inside the roped off areas
This place is amazing but get a guide, otherwise pretty much it doesnt make sense. The descriptions are nice but someone that will explain to you would be 10x better. Also, there are virtual tours available (VR glasses providedfrom across the church downtown Olympia. The water fountain built by Heroes Atticus was the best!
Much better than expected!! So many impressive different sites all together. We added the “Olympia back in time” VR headset tour which really improved the experience. You could stand in front of each ruin and see what it looked like in ancient time, including athletes running around.
What a great visit !!! We saw other people using these devices and we run back to the city to get them too. It was the best thing to make the visit more interesting for us and the kids. It is value for money , highly recommended !!!
Everyone should your this site. Learning of the ancient times where Olympics began and now in ruins. You can only imagine all the people sitting around this huge setting.. just watching match after match.. the yelling, screaming and bottles that took place.
Amazing sites we took the virtual reality option, I highly recommend it it’s took us back to history and could see the full temple and acropolis!!! It does really add somethingI put 4 stars because nothing was advertised for the virtual tour at the ticket point it would be nice to have a sight because we add to walk back to town to Olympia Back in Time shop.Lots of people didn’t know that exist and were interested so could be nice to have the option at the site.
Insane! Not what we were expecting at all. We knew this was an ancient village, but we had no idea how vast it is.There is SO much to see, and such an atmosphere. I literally watched the Olympic games in my head while walking round, it’s incredible.Under 25 is 6euro, over 25 is 12euro. This gives access to the site, and 2 museums. Total bargain.Stupidly we went midday, so it was absolutely cooking. If it was a little cooler, we could of spent longer wondering in and out of the ruins. The detail and art of it all is something else. When you visit the museums after it and see models of what the village looked like once upon a time, your imagination really does run wild.If you’re in Greece, 10/10 recommend.
Very cool experience. We found it very interesting just make sure to bring a water bottle and sunglasses/hat. There are museums nearby, souvenirs shops and bathrooms. Definitely recommend a visit to anyone who is visiting Greece. Suitable for children and people in wheelchairs.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, the site of Olympia is worshipping Zeus since the 10th century B.C.. In the Altis – the sanctuary to the gods – the highest concentrations of masterpieces from the Ancient Greek world can be found. Since 776 B.C. the Olympic Games have been held over centuries. Those who listen carefully can still feel the real Olympic flame.
Definitely recommend going here if you are visiting Greece or just want to explore. I’d suggest bringing water and sunscreen, when we went it was very hot and sunny. Quite breathtaking to see in person.
