Archaeological Museum of Macedonia in Skopje

Republic of North Macedonia has very interesting and coloures history. The Museum sight is mervelous. Realy worth seeing. From paleolitic to Greece and Bisantine...

Terrible. Dont bother. Dilapidated, third floor is empty, and apparently all the gold has been locked away in a safe. The worst museum I have ever seem. Its a national embarrassment.

A lot pieces of art 🎨 from the oldest times to ottoman ocupacion, sculptures, jewelry, pots for every day use.. even a replica of the sarcofag of Alexander

Dont bother, either the Jewish Memorial or Macedonian History Museums are much better options. The most impressive feature is the building, inside the museum is a lot smaller than expected. The woman working on the ticket desk was rude and got annoyed because I was paying the 150 lek admission with a 200 lek note, made no eye contact, instead preferring to chat to her friend who didnt work at the museum but was sitting behind the desk.With no information I made my way around the poorly lit museum, which has very limited information other than in Macedonian, so its difficult to know what youre looking at.Its a waste of time.

Big disappointing and waste of time. Ive never seen like this museum. Its just big building from the outside. But, the inside is too small and therere just couples of replica sculptures, photos, tools, vases and meaningless rocks and empty rooms. No special history. No air conditioner. It should be free. Sorry..

The first archaeological collection was established in 1920 within the Faculty of Philosophy in Skopje. In 1924, a museum institution was organized, more precisely, a historical-archaeological museum with a lapidary, which was located in Kurshumli an.

Only the text describing the item is in English. None of the general information and history is in English. Small exhibition for such a large building.

There were two pricings: one for tourists in English and another for locals in Macedonian. It’s not worth visiting either way. One entire section is purely comprised of pictures rather than the original.

The museum building is beautiful and has great location but poorly curated.One wing is entirely photos of gold items (no artifacts). Item descriptions are sometimes in English, sometimes in Braille (inconsistent). From the exterior, there are probably four floors. However, only two are accessible to paying patrons. The replica of Alexander the Greats sarcophagus is much whiter than the original in Antalya.I hope the board of directors has plans and funding to realize the potential of this museum.

Iconic building but an average museum. Itll take 15-20 mins at most. There isnt much to see.

Felt like it was missing something. The gold exhibition was just photos on a wall. But the neolithic and older stuff was interesting. Ultimately I cant recommend a visit unless you just want to get out of the sun for a moment.

Nice place to learn about the Macedonia history from the 18th century and on. Some of the museum was closed for restoration.

Not a very large but an interesting collection of ancient artefacts. Worth visiting if you are interested in ancient times.

The artifacts in the museum are ideal for understanding the archaeological history of Macedonian lands. When you finish the tour, you can see how the people have developed since the early ages, understand their lives, and its a mind opener. I wish we could have bought an English museum book or at least a brochure in the shop at the exit to get more detailed information. Likewise, audio descriptions would have been very helpful while visiting the museum. I also ask the authorities to pay attention to the descriptions and numbering of the remains, because the English descriptions are in one place, and the direction of the numbers is on the other. We had to look at the descriptions one at a time and go around and find the right artifact among the jumbled numbers and go back to the description. It is both confusing and time-consuming.

I expected more. They have only 2 floors, although the building is enourmous. The staff isnt that friendly.

It was not good at all.1. It was very small2. The exhibits were nothing special and most of them were copies of the ones in Greece to be honest.They spent so much money to build this magnificent building so they can show us copies.Sorry Skopje but if I wanted to see copies of statues I would gladly go to the souvenir store instead. 👎

You can see so much history in this museum from the tools and jewelry made by ancient peoples up until more recent history. The museum is well designed and has a few different wings dedicated to different eras/subjects.

I was incredibly disappointed by this museum. They actually have really cool artifacts, but seem to have dropped the ball on everything except acquisition. We found MULTIPLE things MISLABELED! (One pictured, Spur Asterisks clearly labeled as Sword Handle, and vice versawhich was very shocking. There were also dozens of artifacts lacking labels entirely! Many displayed without numbers, and many numbers listed but not displayed. Many objects removed for conservation.The biggest problem was a lack of information - it was just a list of things and what period they were from, no further information on what anything was used for or by whom. There were a 3 signs that looked like they maybe gave a bit more context, but where only in Cyrillic Macedonian (and brail, which is cool!). There was a large display of what looked like a mosaic floor/marble columns, but not a single sign or plaque with information! It also looked like there was some sort of projection display set up on either end of the room, but neither were running. Just an super obnoxious loud beeping sound throughout 🤣We were only allowed to see the one display as the stairs to the upstairs were roped off, and we were yelled at when we tried to see the exhibit downstairs (I glimpsed some mannequins in traditional clothing and what looked like a wagon wheel set up as a display, but two guys who had just been sitting on their phone around the corner run up and yelled at us when we went to walk down the stairs.An entirely bizarre "Archeological Museum" experience that I cannot recommend. Really such a shame since there is such a fascinating area with incredible history, a real missed opportunity.

Really cool, ancient artifacts but really poor labeling and organization. Staff are apathetic at best and the whole place is disappointing in that they squander the opportunity to do justice to their amazing history. The place needs more love and attention but no one here seems to care.

We have visited it in September 2021 and it was very interesting exhibit with items from even Paleolithic period.Most of the artifacts are dating from ottoman and then Neolithic period. There is, also, entire section with statues dating back to Roman times.What is missing, though, is somewhat more of the information on civilizations that artifacts belonged to. Given the geographical location of the North Macedonia and number of civilizations lived here you’d have to research further for different periods who would be the civilization certain items could belong to.Otherwise pretty good exhibit. It’s a must visit if you are visiting Skopje.

Right in the heart of the city! Nice and compact museum showing archeological findings from Macedonia. The findings start from 50.000 BC to late Ottoman Era. You will be satisfied with lighting of displays.

Not worth €2.5 to be honest. Unless you are particularly interested in unexcavated objects. No special history. Just excavations from different parts of the country. If you have abundant money and want to donate for a quick look, its pretty inside. But just pretty at one glance as my photo shows. No more.Im especially interested in archaeology, but this one is not worth it.

The museum has 3 areas, one is the lapidarium and then 2 have pottery and various other type of objects from the different ages. The exhibits are interesting and nicely displayed. Unfortunately the museum has nothing interactive and does not really tell a story or more , just shows objects. Employees minimalistic and the architecture is kind of kitsch, low quality, no authentic style and not maintained.

The entrance is 150, almost 2.5 euros, the museum is nice but not as big as it looks from outside. Actually is just two small floors, not so much to see. They are renovating some sections because the building is huge, cannot be just that. Very old stuff though. Was good but I expected more.

This museum is full of interesting artifacts and sculptures from thousands of years ago. It is fascinating to see visual representations of Macedonias rich history and culture through these beautiful artifacts. Well worth a visit!

Huge collection of interesting artifacts. Strange ugly interior, pompous building, with huge front elevation, but rather limited space inside - more like a theater decor.

The Archaeological Museum of Macedonia is an imposing structure that occupies a privileged spot in the center of Skopje. The building is hard to miss since it sits right next to the main bridge that links the old and new parts of town. Tall white Ionic columns are topped by a couple of domes and a neo-classical portico. The architectural style is difficult to pinpoint, but the glitz reminded me of Las Vegas as do many other similar buildings in the Macedonian capital.

Very interesting, well designed. A good place to visit for understanding the Makedonian history.

Although not so big, it is worth a visit. Entrance fee is symbolic and there are some temporary free exhibitions from time to time. The staff is very friendly and welcoming. The Golden Masks exhibition was spectacular. There was a temporary exhibition from Kazakhstan when I went there. So keep an eye on those too. Overall, it was quite an enjoyable experience.

This building was constructed in the rebuild of 2014, meaning its extravagant, over the top and blocks a view of the old Skopje. I found that it lacked a lot of descriptions, the lighting was dim (I couldnt read majority of those that did have descriptionsand that it was mostly focused on coins. I was in and out after 30-45 mins.

Nice collection in a quite modern/classic building. There was an important exhibition about the 100 years of Ohrid archeological excavations.

It is a 5* museum. The building is beautiful inside-outside. The exhibition areas are very modern, demanding and stylish. The exhibition has wild range of materials, pieces on two levels in the building. Very worth to visit! The entrance fee is 300 MKD but when we visited we payed 150 MKD/person although we are not students... maybe because we were there on Sunday...

Very interesting and engaging place. Large collection of coins from different period as well as pottery, bit of armour and every day use items with English descriptions and intrudoction to its history . English guide available on site for larger groups. Entry was around €2. It took us 2.5h to see it all .Some reviews mentioned being bit dark inside which might be true for some but it gives nice atmosphere and ambience to the place.

The museum offers different items to check in a chronological order. There are plenty of paintings depicting life, rituals and professions in different ages - all the paintings add a gallery-like touch to the place. At parts there is no proper lighting which is odd. Also only the name of the items are displayed (in English toobut no explanation on historical insight to read at all. Theres a sculpture room and coins exhibition as well.

I hate the phrase "must see" but I do think if you come to Macedonia, you do have to come to the Archaeological Museum to learn about the importance of the area and the rich history it has; even though the current country of Macedonia (FYROM to the Greeksis small.

Great learning experience for history of Macedonia, only problem is that some parts of museum are very dark. 300 denari for adults and 150 denari for students. Also, very beautiful building!

Poorly lit. The museum itself is okay- many things did not have an English translation. The women refused to give me a student discount because it didn’t show the expiration date on it- duh it doesn’t have one because it’s still valid- very frustrating. We got yelled at by a worker for going up a staircase that we thought was part of the museum- they should have put a rope or something because we thought it continued onward. I think this museum is worth a skip.

Marvelous museum made all the better by the excellent guided tour. If there are more than 7 of you get the special entry price of 120 dinars per person. A must see in Skopje

All the History of the macedonian kings from bronze Age, Coins from old times and more paintings are presented in those 3 Floors in the Museum. One can spend 1-3 hours in that Museum. Located very Close to Alexander Statue Next to stone bridge

Really amazing place and worth to see. Exhibitions can tell a lot about Macedonian history. Price is good. Not working on Mondays. Great inside design.
