Japan, 〒616-0004 Kyoto, Nishikyo Ward, Arashiyama Nakaoshitacho, 61, Sakurai
Popular area atop Mt. Arashiyama for viewing wild macaque monkeys & sweeping city views.
Nice walk/hike up with a great view. The abundance of monkeys is great. They had an outside feeding session by one of the keepers while there.
We’ll worth the visit. Even without the monkeys, the view of Kyoto from Arashiyama is spectacular enough. The monkeys are fun to observe and feed. The park is well monitored so that visitors don’t do dumb things like bringing their own food or feed outside the feeding area.It is quite an ascent to the park though, so wear comfy shoes!
20 minute walk up the mountain to the peak to see the monkeys. You can feed them from inside the building, they are on the outside. The food (apples, bananas, peanutsare 100 yen. Different monkeys prefer different foods. Some of the monkeys did not like the apples as much. Very fun interactive experience. Highly recommend!
Monkey lover paradise. The entrance fee is 600 yen and there’s a 15 minute walk to the top, but it’s worth it. You can feed the monkeys in a special enclosure for just a 100 yen.
Monkeying around. Fun, but can get aggressive when comes to each other and of course food.
Long hike up, but the view is quite nice
Top of the hill you can see monkeys and also feed them from inside a building :)was a fun experience! It has a 20 minutes walk to the monkey area.It also has a playground for kids.
Such a lovely place!! The monkeys are free and everywhere, which is super nice! If you like to take animal photos, thats a great place!Just remember you have 20min walking up, its not hard to get there, but if youre exhausted, try another day. Also, the view from there is beautiful!! You can see the whole Kyoto!
Its absolutely beautiful when you reach the park after a 20 minute ish walk up the mountain. You can see the entire city and the monkeys roam freely.
After a decent climb you get to a spot where wild monkeys and people can meet. In November you also get beautiful foliage
The monkeys are a treat to see. You can even get a picture with them! They loved the peanuts.
Good experience to see the free monkeys and its possible to feed them. Great landscape too. Definitely a go If you are planning on visiting Arashiyama.
If you can handle the 20 minute hike/walk to get to the monkeys… you must do it! What an incredible experience! The people were great and just being around the monkeys was amazing!
The view from the mountain was gorgeous, clean restrooms, and the monkeys were well and behaved. Well worth the hike!
Definitely worth the small entry price. Is a bit of a hike but nothing too strenuous, felt like the guides and the staff at the park really cared about their work and the wellbeing of the monekeys, good addition to your itinerary if youre visiting the bamboo forest or other shrines in the area!
Good experience! But be aware of quiet a hike to the hilltop. Especially if you have to carry small children, you will need some fitness :-)
Reasonably priced. Fun to watch monkeys. Keep in mind that there is about 20 minutes walk up the hill to get to the place. Nice view over Kyoto. There is a convenient parking a bit south of the entrance, cheaper than the big parking lot that charges by day.
so cute! very interesting and you can feed them
Absolutely brilliant. It is a 20 minute hike up a mountain but you then get an excellent view of Kyoto and super cute monkeys you can feed for 100 yen a bag. They are around even in the rain. If uou like Monkeys go. If you dont, go anyway
It was a fun experience to hang out with monkeys!! However there’s was hiking trail which takes about 15-20 mins to reach the monkey park at the top as well as a cute little playground for kids. It was raining when we went and the trail was a little slick. Kind of dangerous when we were going down the hill. Good for adults and kids who like walking/hiking.年紀太小,不喜歡走路的孩子上山會比較辛苦
Super nice.Quite a climb to the top but many monkeys super close and a wonderful view over the city.(Honestly the climb is okay because the forest is beautiful)
Atop a roughly 15-20 min hike up, you will be greeted by a cliff lodge of wonderful monkey friends that you can walk around and feed! Great experience to check out when youre in the Arashiyama area. The small park lodge has a cliff side view of the neighboring area and is also great for pictures!
Glad we went here. Seeing how the monkeys interact was very enjoyable. Theres a feeding area where you can buy food for them (100 yen for a small bag of peanuts or apples). The view from the top was also great. Dont skip out on this when youre in Arashiyama! Its walkable from the bamboo forest. You can have your baggage stored behind the ticketing counter upon entering the park.
Fun experience getting to hangout with the monkeys. It’s a 100 yen to get food and give it to them. You have to do it in the building, not outside. It’s about a 20 minute hike up the mountain to get to the area, but that can be faster or slower depending! The view up there is also the best in Kyoto, you can see everything from up there!
Nice walk up from the river. Buy tickets slightly up the hill (not at the river, which is for a river cruise). There is a playground near the top for younger kids. Lovely views from the top!
Don’t look the monkeys in the eyes (or so they say)!! The best thing for me was the view from the top - which is absolutely worth the trek up. You can see the entire city, chill with the monkeys and take in the views.
One of the coolest places Ive visited. The hike to the top can take anywhere from 20 to 40 minutes depending on your pace. There is a room almost at the top where you can cool down with a bit of AC if you go when it is hot. Once you reach the top, Monkeys are just Everywhere. They run and play all over the mountain top. You can also feed them Apple pieces or Peanuts (sold for ¥200 inside the feeding roomFeeding them was so cool and they arent shy about asking for food either.
This was a memorable experience. The hike was worth the view and the experience of getting to interact with the monkeys. There is a play ground for the Little’s to burn off extra energy if the home didn’t do that already. It has a slide and zip line. You can buy monkey food there and it’s not too expensive and they use the money to keep the place running. We visited in November and the weather was AWSOME!
Theres a 15 to 20 minute incline trek up to the Monkey Park. When you get there you get a spanning view of the Arashiyama region and of course you get to see the cheeky monkeys running about. As with all monkeys, they look cute in pictures but are pretty intense in reality and sometimes aggressive too. Especially amongst themselves. Theres an enlcosed area with some chicken wire fencing where you can have a safety barrier whilst offering them food. Respect their space, dont bring open food, and dont wear loose items like sunglasses hanging on your collar and youll have a fun day.
It was pretty cool, and definitely worth at least an hour at the top (it takes about 20 additional minutes just to climb up). There is a small fee associated, which I think was around ¥550 ($5.50).Some of the staff speak English, and theu keep visitors safe and they keep the visitor area clean. You can buy food to feed the monkeys, and ask that you dont give them anything from home (for the safety of the monkeys and the visitors). There are signs, but I was still surprised to see a few deer. I was fortunate enough to take photos with both animals in a couple of the photos. Monkeys are not caged, and the area has signs stating that scientific surveys and research is done with the troup.I came in late May, so there were a quite a few new moms, and a few getting ready for their offspring to arrive.
bit of a hike, but the view from the top is nice with a close-up experience with monkeys. Small park for kids near the summit. Highly recommended 30 min hike!
This place is very cute but somewhat small. Be advised that there is a 160m steep hike around 15 minutes before you get to the Monkey Park. Everyone was panting and heaving when we got to the top but it was definitely worth it! There is a playground for children and 2 rest stops with fans. You are able to feed the monkeys from inside a human cage. The view is also amazing and very instagrammable. Ill definitely be back, but maybe with a bottle of water!
OmG I loved it! There park was nice and I enjoyed the walk up. The monkeys were adorable, especially the babies! I loved the feeding experience! I will definitely come back!
To reach the top you need to walk or “hike” around 20-40 minutes depending on your fitness level. Wear comfortable shoes and get to the top to see the monkeys. You can feed the monkeys from the cabin, purchase the food for 100 yen, entrance ticket is 550 yen. Don’t forget to read and follow the rules (don’t stare at them, don’t get too close and don’t crouch), I’ve seen several tourist didn’t follow the rules and it could provoke the monkeys.
Forest filled with wild monkeys. It is a decent, steep uphill, but definitely worth it. 550 yen per adult and you can feed the monkeys. The view at the top was nice as well.
The entrance is a bit tricky to find. From Hankyu Arashiyama Station, go straight and turn left just before the river, follow the street along the river, turn right at the intersection, walk further a bit and there will be a big Arashiyama Monkey Park sign on the left. Tickets cost 550 JPY for adults and 250 JPY for children (4 years old and up). It takes 15-20 minutes by walking from the entrance to the monkey hut at the top. The route isnt steep and relatively easy (our 6 and 3 years old had no problems walking all the way up). The ticket booth sell some souvenirs, umbrella (350 JPY), and raincoat (100 JPY). There are vending machines and some benches at the starting point and other benches on the way up. When you almost reach the top, there is a playground and an air-conditioned resting place. Just a bit up further, you will finally see the macaque on their pretty green hills. The view is great, staff is so friendly (they asked if we would like to see the macaque during feeding time), the macaque are pretty cool (not aggressive). Theres a hut where you could buy cold drinks for yourself and some peanut/apples for the macaque. Even though the place isnt big but its a great place to spend 1-2 hours away from the bustling downtown Arashiyama.
Good for kods you can see wild monkeys and can feed them by 100Yen. However you have to climb mountain about 30 min to arrive close to monkeys. If you plan to go consider 1-2hours from entrance to return.
We visited in October 2019.We traveled by train from Kyoto, got off at Arashiyama station. Walked to the Buddhist temple first, visited the garden and the unique bamboo forest. Then, crossed the river, had lunch and then visited the monkey park. Its a 25minutes hike, nice steep climb with views. You can spend about 45min watching the monkeys play around, doing their daily activities. Views from the top are very nice. I remember that you can buy peanuts and feed them. They seem friendly.Well worth visiting overall.
We went here in April 2019. This place was absolutely worth the trip from Tokyo! We took the train and then walked to this place, a little far but not bad at all and theres so much to see on the way. This place is super affordable and after you pay you have to hike to the top, it was a little steep but we just took our time. Once youre at the top you can hang out outside by the monkeys or you can go inside the hut where you can pay a reasonable price to feed the monkeys from inside the hut. They will jump on the fenced windows of the hut and grab food from you, many of them sit there waiting with their arms sticking through the fence. There are people outside who monitor the monkeys and make sure people follow the rules (like not squatting down to the monkeys level to avoid making the monkeys feel threatened). The view is also spectacular from the top! Highly recommend this place, such a fun and unique outting.
This place is really a great little adventure. Its not much of a hike about 600m or so and mostly stairs so the whole family can make it. The monkeys were adorable and the staff makes sure the humans dont get hurt or do anything to irritate the monkeys as they are free to roam the mountain side. They have a sheltered area for people to go in when feeding the monkeys so that there is a safe barrier. Theres also a beautiful view of Kyoto from the monkey park area.
Thought this was one of those overhyped things but it actually ended up being really fun! We came 30 min before closing so we didn’t have too much time with the monkeys but a perk was that it wasn’t crowded at all. It’s a pretty significant uphill hike to get to where the monkeys are (allot ~20min for regular pace walking, ~10min if you’re really pushing it to a fast climb).View at the top is nice and lots of monkeys everywhere. You can also buy packets of peanuts for ¥100 and feed them through a cage (super fun. definitely recommend.)
If you are in Kyoto you NEED to visit this park!!! It says that it’s about a 30min walk, that depends on you. It’s a bit steep and might take a bit longer, but there are benches along the way for you to rest at. The hike itself is beautiful! At the top you get a great view of the city. Viewing the monkeys was incredible! They would walk around you as if you weren’t there. You have the option to walk into a small build and feed them through a fence. The staff is very nice and respectful. You can tell they truly care about the safety of the animals. This was better than any zoo experience you will ever have!!!
Its fun, its a nice walk up and the view from the top is amazing. The monkeys are cute and run freely around you on the summit of the mountain. They look well kept and the area is full of park employees that look after them. The hike up to the top takes about 20 minutes. Were 30 years old traveling without kids. We enjoyed the hike up and the view on the way. However, it can be quite steep and hard for little kids and grown-ups. We saw a few people really struggleing and it was a bit worrying.
The view up top was beautiful. The monkeys were very interesting to see. The baby monkeys were super cute. The hike 160m above sea level is more than 20min if you are not an avid hiker. Be prepared for many steps and steep paths.
Be prepared for the hike if you are going on a hot day - bring water (I go for hiking a lot but this one tired me out even though it’s only a 20-30 mins hike!it’s slightly steep but not a difficult walk though! The monkeys are free roaming and quite well behaved! The view is also breathtaking. You can feed them if you like, they sell snacks up at the park.
We caught the train to Arashiyama train station and walked about 10 minutes. It was handy to have Google maps open to follow the walking directions there. Once we paid the entrance fee we walked approx 20 minutes up a steep pathway to the top of the mountain. Its a nice walk with plenty of shade. When you reach the top they have an air conditioned room if you want to sit for a little to cool down. The monkeys are free roaming and interesting to watch. They seem to be well cared for there. There are baby monkeys and older monkeys. The view of Kyoto from the top of the mountain is beautiful also. You can buy a small bag of food to feed them. They also have a monkey feeding show at specific times. Highly recommend coming here. Its a nice experience.
I loved visiting this park because the monkeys were free to roam wherever they wished. Just make sure to keep your distance to at least 2 meters! The park was clean and had a nice small pond that the monkeys drank from. There were several newborn and young macaques during my visit that were so adorable. Youre also allowed to feed them from inside the house, which actually protects you from the macaques that get jealous or aggressive.Throughout my visit there were no problems and the staff were extremely attentive of all the monkeys and guests. I recommend coming here if you want to see macaques up close, just prepare yourself for the short hike up the mountain.
Well organised wonderful park with a beautiful forest, good playground and lots of cute monkeys. The climb is something to take into account but there are enough rests, fun trivia and cooling moments along the way. They are very service minded and I love the idea of putting the people in the cage instead of the animals.Great place for kids and its so nice theyre not too charge much more than they do.
Get here early and beat the crowds. It opens at 9am and is 550 yen per adult, 250 per child. The hike takes about 20 min and is a steep stair case most of the way. It was very rewarding at the top, plenty of monkeys wandering around. Perfectly safe for families as long as you follow the rules. You can feed the monkeys for $100 yen from inside the building. Also you have spectacular views of Kyoto from the top.
This place is amazing! Its a beautiful location high above the city area. Its a bit of an uphill walk to get to the monkey park but there are plenty of places to sit and take a short breather along the way. Totally worth the trek! The park is well-maintained and the staff are helpful and truly do a good job caring for the monkeys. The monkeys are curious and can be aggressive. Follow the directions on the ticket for guidelines on what not to do and youll be fine. Great place for taking photos so if you have a camera with a nice zoom lens bring that with you. Highly recommended!
