Bergstraße 2, 82346 Andechs, Germany, Penzberg
Hilltop Benedictine monastery, church & medieval pilgrimage center with a brewery & a beer garden.
Probably the best Bier in Bayern. The food at the monastery itself could be better but the atmosphere is super.
Beautiful church with a long history but I was there for the beer. Andechs is my German favorite and visiting here with a good friend and my father (88was a treat.
Great to have seen it!Sunny day and some time at the Biergarten well spent with a drink and some Bavarian food.
I wish I could rate the Monastery on multiple levels, as a pilgrimage site, a brewery and a restaurant. I hope my pictures do justice to what you will see in the Monastery. A beautifu , prayerful environment. Well worth the time to visit and to refresh yourself spiritually and bodily.
Old charm German pub with tasty food and beer. Awesome views from the top of the Monastery tower.
Google Maps lists it as a pilgrimage destination. It is certainly one for beer drinkers and connoisseurs of meaty dishes. Selection of different beer gardens and a dining hall when the weather is not allowing outdoor seating. Prost.
Great day out from Munich. Went to end of s8, walked through beautiful forest, saw the church and then enjoyed the monks fab beer hall. Just great
Great views and food. Travel from Munich on train then bus up to Monastery. Used 9 Euro one month expiry train ticket, great value for money.
Beer is great. Meat dishes are great. Don’t forget to pay tribute to Carl Orff.
Another impressive church. Its nice to go up and see the organ pipes.
A great monastery with breathtaking decoration of the church. A beautiful add-on is the biergarten that serves bier brewed at the monastery. The views are also worth seeing. You can either hike there or simply take a bus.
Such an amazing work of art, lots of intriguing details throughout the monastery. And the views from the top are gorgeous!
Gorgeous church. You go to Tutzing and take bus 958 which drops you at the base of Andechs. A long incline to walk up. It has a tower that has 13 flights of steps for €1.00. Their food opens at 11:00 and they have superb Haxen. Beer is great. Get there before 12:00 or few seats left.
Beautiful chapel. I climbed 100 steps to the gop of the steeple! Beer garden is great. You can buy food and beer. The swine haxel is delicious.
It is really nice place with a beautiful church and nice foods/drinks!!!
Very well organised and a good experience. Dont forget to grab a mixed pack of 6 beers on the way out!
Beautiful monastery, nice hike up to it.The beer was good but we prefer Augustiner by far.The Food, your typical biergarten fare.Worth the trip if you have inexpensive, special fare train tickets.
We reach the monastery on foot, from Herrsching. Adventure through the woods. Nice view from the top. We didnt try the monastery beer, because we didnt find the place. All in all, worth seeing, prepare yourself for walking if you choose our way up.
I’ve been visiting Andechs Monastery since 70th, you will always find something interesting with this place, even if you don’t like to drink their fantastic beer. Greetings from Sweden…….
Its not only monastery, its cool Biergarten with beautiful views on the mountains and One of the best bier in the world!
Beautiful monestary with great views. The monks really know how to make great beer as well. Even the alcohol free beer taste great!
Nice hike to and amazing food and beer and atmosphere. Will be back!!!
This place was really nice. The food was awesome and the beer was excellent. The staff, abit unfriendly but I really enjoyed it up there. So much to see and lots of beer to drink. I would 100% visit this place again. Do the small hike of youre in Munich. Its really nice. Carry some beers on the hike as well. Good for kids, animals and older persons.
Music is good, food is great, beer is the best
On a sunny weekend its simply too busy to be enjoyable imo. Nevertheless it is beautiful from up close and far away.
Nice touristy place but huge crowds over the weekend. I think the Ettal looks beautiful if you hike around the place. Huge parking.
We visited in the summer of 2018. The entire trip remains one of my most cherished memories!
Its a great place but VERY crowded. There are Biergartens here, restaurants, more restaurants and you will still struggle for space if you come on a holiday or weekend.Other than that, no complaints...
What an interesting place to visit. Apparently it can get really busy however I arrived quite late one Friday and it was busy but not over the top. The beer was excellent as is all German beer, and the food was fantastic too. The church is currently an active monastery so do watch thier closing times as are early due to prayer. The venue has plenty of free parking however its a bit of a short but steap walk from the parking to the venue. I would definitely not consider they place to be wheelchair friendly however it could accessed with a fair bit of assistance to get up the hill. Last but not least do go check out the collection of clubmembers beer mugs which are locked in a special cage.
I know some people think this place is too tourist, and mass production factory, but I enjoy it...and usually come early before the rush.Arrive well before noon, ideally 11am...that is when the restaurant opens.Share a litre beer, share a pork knuckle...they are large and sharing the cost makes it a bit better. The whole monastery is not open to the public, but the baroque style layout of the church is worth a visit. Slip into the small chapel to tge side, and say a pray of thanks.Pick a good day, even during the weekdays 80% of the tables are occupied by 12noon
Very very busy, which is normal on a sunny Sunday! Still nice place to spend the day with at least 3 beergardens and a few nice walks around it.
Great beer, delicious food, and a beautiful setting what more needs to be said. This was the perfect stop to enjoy lunch while exploring the Bavarian countryside.
Outstanding monument of architecture, with beautiful ornaments inside. Theres a lovely trail from the nearby train station in Herrsching Lessing up to the monastery, definitely recommended to avail of their beer garden with excellent good and their own brewed beer. Very few vegetarian options though.
One of the best pints in Bavaria. Do yourself a favour and hike there, the beer tastes twice as good after a short pilgrimage to the top of the hill.
Its a must visit place for everyone. The journey to the Monastery will also give you thrills. The place is a mind soothing and you will feel differently despite the religion. There is also nice view of the houses from above also you can see the alps. Just take your time and enjoy your visit to this long years of history and tradition.
What a fantastic summer day! We took the train from München out to Herrsching and then you can walk or find a cab for a quick ride up the hill. Google has the train schedules built in and the Germans stay right on time! Either way is worth it, as the views, food, bier and atmosphere are amazing. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly. The bier is traditional Bavarian. On a nice day, sitting outside is a must. Tours are available of the monastery, which is a nice walk! The buildings are gorgeous. Take a day and make the journey out to Andechs! You will not regret it!!
The small portion of the monastery and church that I did see was nice, but who are we kidding? I came for the beer. You have a few options. You can sit in the cafe restaurant with someone waiting on you or the cafeteria where you point to what you want and they weigh it for purchase. But theres a separate area for the beer. You pay the cashier for what you want. They had you a ticket and you give it to the bar tender and they get your beer. Very quick process.
You have to visit this Monastery for three main reasons; (1the scenic views, its beautiful everywhere you look, (2the food, there are a few places to eat here and the food is delicious, and (3the church, you have to go inside the church. The only way I can describe it is, "In Awe." The structure, the details...fall down on your knees! The pictures in my mind, do not do justice to what your own eyes will see. You must go!
The place is religious, yes but also down-to-earth as well. We claimed the steep trail from Herrsching through the wald on a very rainy day. My wife made the hike too. I was disappointed not meeting any of the monks, but we experienced the sanctity of the chapel, the warmth of the dining room and we made use of the the toilets (free of charge). We are very pleased that we visited.
Its a very nice place with very nice walks you can easily reach by foot from the S-train or by car and bus. Theres a very nice, though usually also very crowded, restaurant/beer garden/café at the monastery, theres a nice restaurant just outside, a playground and even a miniature golf course by the parking lot. Its also a classic one-day tour for your Munich visitors.
Super excursion place, very nice to walk and enjoy the day with the family! 5 * for the excursion place. Unfortunately I can not say this for the gastronomy part, prices are grossly exaggerated, staff abnormally unfriendly, long waiting time and the "music" simply...... 1* for this part! Conclusion if they want to enjoy the day they go for a walk there and then prefer to go to Lake Amersee and eat something there.
Monastery is beautiful calm place. Huge restaurant one can enjoy fresh beer with friends and family. Surrounded by breathtaking apls view.
A truly STUNNING kloster in the countryside near Munich. This place is WELL worth the visit. There church is a kind of beautiful only found in Europe. After visiting the church take time to stop at the brewery and restaurant. Both the food and beer are also delicious.
2 1/2 stars. A bit disappointed, not worth an extra drive unless its on the way. The place is small, not much to walk around, nice views though. The beer garden is nice to stop by.
A (not socold Day in early February. Spent around 2 hours for a lovely walk through the countryside and around Andechs.Afterwards we rewarded ourselves with a traditional Bavarian and very delicious meal within the monastery =)
This place was so beautiful! We had been traveling all over and specifically stopped here to see it.The amazing detail and craftsmanship is incredible! I cant imagine how long some of these details took to create. As Americans its difficult to imagine how old some of these places really are since we dont have that kind of history here.We really enjoyed being able to experience this place.
Ive been here several times and the beer, food and setting always impress. There are few places on Earth that so capture the aesthetic and vibrancy of a country and region like Andechs does for the state of Bavaria. It is an absolute must for those who want to feel the country vibe of Bavaria. It
This may be my single favorite place in Germany (or anywhere for that matter). The food is excellent and reasonably priced - though the portions tend toward the over-generous - bring your appetite or a friend! This is coupled with what is perhaps the best beer in Germany. Just up the hill is an entirely different experience - a lovely baroque church with a completely different focus than the Biergarten mere steps away. It is a bit of a hike up the hill, but more than worth it. This is the one place I ALWAYS go when I am in Germany.
We found our best adventures happen when we get a referral and when we keep an open mind. Luckily a friend of ours referred Andechs Monastery to us, otherwise we never would have visited. The Benedictine monastery is located little more than one hour way from Munich. So we took a small day trip from Munich taking the S Bahn plus a local bus.The monastery is in the centre of a small village (here), including a Gothic church (here), brewery and gift shop. The beautiful Gothic church is from the 1400’s and has attracted pilgrims and tourists from around the world. Andechs Monastery is also a well-known cultural centre and for it’s seven varieties of Andechs Monastery beer and gastronomy. We visited the village and stayed for lunch in the Klostergasthof restaurant. Curious about German culture, we were ready for the typical German gastronomy and the local beer. It was fun and well priced for a big meal. It was crowded since we visited on a Sunday afternoon, yet we managed to share a table with a nice couple from Italy (cheers). We discovered that we could communicate in French. And so, a new connection was made !The small village is really beautiful and fun to visit. Make sure to visit the church, the small gift shop for a small souvenir (also to encourage the Monastery), the restaurant for a meal or a beer tasting (offered for groups after a brewery tour).Serge: 5 Eli: 5Recommend: Yes, really nice village, a trip to the past with good beer and typical German food.
The Andechs Monastery was a great afternoon trip from Munich (easily reached via the S-Bahn and bus). Delicious beer brewed on site and served at the cute little beer garden. Take a stroll (respectfullythrough the beautiful abbey and surrounding property.
