Ancient Roman-style amphitheater restored & today hosting various performing arts events.
Beautiful place with interesting history. All part of lovely Plovdiv
very impressive. very good preservation. great view
Preserved and partially restored Roman theater. It has been constructed in the 90s of the first century and is an important part of the cultural heritage in the city. The tickets to enter are cheap. It is also used for different cultural events. It has capacity for up to 3500 spectators, in the past it had for around 7000. The diameter of the theater is 82 meters. The seating section is long 26 meters and includes 28 concentric rows of marble seats, divided into two tiers by an aisle. The steps are very narrow and steep, the ones on the southern end are better.
Never visit Plovdiv on Monday..most museum closed AND full of students. Better any other day. Theatre access is 5 Lev...worths but you will see most is mostly reconstructed ...still great piece of art..
We went to an event. The organization was poor. They could provide information about which entrance to use depending on the section you are.Otherwise, the antic theater is more than great.
Listen, when you get to watch anything in the remains of an actual Roman theatre, you give it 5 stars. I watched Opeth. 5 stars.
Absolutely loved this place. A must visit. If you can, you should catch a concert or even a play if it is available.
Well. One of "The places" in Plovdiv. You just have to visit there when youre on Plovdiv.
Hard seats😉 saw the Vienna Symphonic Orchistra here. Acoustics are better suited for a rock concert. Beautiful watching the full moon coming up though.
Very cool to see, we did not pay to go in but you can take some nice pictures from the surrounding overlook.
okay to see, dont expect anything special. No need to buy tickets to obtain good views
Nice clean small theatre in top of old town of Plovdiv city. Nice café around. No need to buy ticket to enter coz you can see the whole theatre from outside. You may see old traditional Plovdiv houses, the great Masjid(mosque), square ,shops, cafes and restaurants including halal food.
Not that hard to access from the city center, have to pay a small fee but its worth it. It is well preserved and astonishing, totally recomended!
Aside from being a great historical landmark the amphitheatre is an amazing concert venue. Anyone who has the chance to visit an event, dont miss it. From opera to death metal shows.. the atmosphere makes it magical.
Very well preserved Roman theatre. Try to get to see a concert during your stay. The acoustics are amazing.
A must-see place, one of the highlights in Plovdiv.
At wed 27 Jul 22 ,8pm, I visited the ancient theatre of Plovdiv and a music band was playing music live with a lot of people listening. Entrance was free. You need to walk a hill to go there and you ll sweat enough at a summer day.
Nice place full of history and culture!Unfortunately you cannot enjoy the beauty of the Ancient theatre and Plovdiv sitting in the cafeteria because of several commercial sheets placed in between... No comment about all fences preventing one who want to take a look for free...
Awesome and remarkable that it’s still used as an entertainment venue today even. Great views of the city as well. Well worth the short walk up the hill. Highly recommend! Might want to check to see if it’s open before going though as it was closed when we arrived so the performance that night could setup.
Always has and always will be a breathtaking place. Even if youre not a big fan of history, its always fun to go and imagine what it was like all those years ago (plus the entry ticket isnt super expensive). And if that isnt for you, theres bound to be a show thats being put on so you might get to enjoy an entertaining evening overlooking the beautiful city of Plovdiv.5/5 must visit if youre ever in Plovdiv
One of the highlights of my trip. Didnt expect to be so overwhelmed, but its such a huge theater. And to be accessible all around is quite a rarity
The ancient theater in Plovdiv is definitely one of the must-sees during a visit to this wonderful city steeped in history. It is located between the southwest slope of the Shambas Hill (Bulg. Джамбаз тепеand the Taksim Hill (Bulg. Таксим тепеin the old town of Plovdiv. The theater was one of the most important public buildings of Roman Philippopolis and today it is one of the best preserved on the Balkan Peninsula and one of the sights of Plovdiv. An inscription of the builder, placed on the architrave of the eastern proscenium (the facade-like porch of the backstage), states that the construction of the theater took place towards the end of the reign of Emperor Trajan, probably 116-117 AD.
It was closed due to private event when we were in Plovdiv. We werent inside, but it looks great even from outside
Nicely preserved and restored ancient theatre that nowadays is used for concerts of various sorts. The acoustic is nice. It is very pleasantly lit during the night and serves as a tranquil point of rest in the middle of the city. The accessibility is not very friendly.
A nice place to visit but rather than walking about inside in the blazing sunshine we sat at the top just outside where a small bar allows you to sip a cold drink and sit in the shade admiring the views. It is good to see that events are still held here though odd to see modern lighting gantries and spotlights in such an ancient place.
Stunning Roman amphitheater in the heart of Old Plovdiv with gorgeous 180° views of the town and the surrounding valley. Watch out for super steep and slippery steps, and bring lots of water, as theres no shade. Marvel at the scale and beauty of Ancient Romes timeless and well-preserved architecture.
Its an obvious MUST SEE when visiting Plovdiv. The Theater has a mythical vibe.
One of the most beautiful places that i visited today. Thanks to security and guard for allowing me enter before close in 10mins and it was so fun to shot quick photos
Really nice place, a must go in Plovdiv
Beautiful place, admission cheap.
I think that seeing a show here would be awesome. Its really a place to see. Ancient meets modern, meets amazing views of the city.5 leva is a steal 😉
The Roman Theatre of Plovdiv is an ancient Roman theatre in Plovdiv, Bulgaria. The theatre is now one of the best preserved ancient Roman theatres in the world. 15 September 2018 The theatre was playing music when we visited and the acoustics were excellent
A wonderful historical landmark in Plovdiv. You can buy a ticket and roam the theatre and stage. Its a must see when visiting. A gorgeous park of the old town.
An amazing experience, it is like going back in time. Would definitely recommend a visit, maybe during spring or summer, but winter also has its charm
This was nice to visit but it seemed to be closed to the public so I could only take photos through the bars. I liked my visit to the fortress view point and to the little cobbled streets of the old town on the hill near this amphitheatre.
Plovdiv is Bulgarias 2nd largest city and the oldest inhabited city in Europe, the old town and plenty of Roman ruins to see. As with most cities in Bulgaria, food aplenty and worth trying local dishes.
Amazing place to visit, cheap entrance (5 lv, 2,5 €), great history and view!
A big, beautiful Roman theater on a hill overlooking Plovdiv. The entry ticket is inexpensive and very worth bringing you in direct contact with the well-preserved ruin. As an extra bonus, exit the theater from the gate close to the scene, and visit the adjucent old basilica with wooden bell tower.
Impressive atmosphere, preserved and decorated authentically to blend in the historical roots..
Amazing view, just be careful when descending, very slippery stairs
They were actually setting up for an event when I visited the theater. Like everything beautiful in Bulgaria it is on a hill and has a lovely view of the city. Much of the original theater is destroyed but you can still sit on and touch the ancient marble of much of the stands. You can also take some beautiful photos of the city with the theater as a frame. Entry is just a little over $3US. This is definitely a quick stop (15-30 minutesbefore you continue to explore the rest of Old Town. *Not Accessible but you can still see it all from the street without having to enter and navigate the stands. All of the streets in Old Town are cobblestone and steep inclines so that is also challenging.
I had an amazing experience here before the corona times and also Plovdiv really deserved to be the cultural capital in 2019. I would recommend it to everyone. Hope you enjoy your life.
We usually visit this place when we go to concerts. I havent been there on a tour during operating hours. The theater is magical at sunset. I highly recommend visiting some concerts or other events there.
Simply amazing! Past and presence are combined in perfection. I will highly recommend visiting a concert there.
One of the wonders of the world, in my opinion. Must see as it is so uniquely situated between the narrow streets of the old town. You cant believe the site in front of you one you get there. Spectacular. Often hosting open air concerts with its amazing acoustics.
The teather is charming on its own. You can but a ticket to watch some play. You just need to make sure that you have a warm jacket when the sunset gets closer. It really gets cold out there. The wind sometimes is more than a habitable breeze. There are separated seats, so you can go there even through these times.
Its small but worth a visit, theres bigger in lets say Cyprus but youre in Plovdiv so go and see it for lv5 its worth it. Some times theres a concert on so you have to work around good photos or ones with lighting and scaffolding in! Sorry its Bulgaria.
Just 5Lv, huge theatre, you can explore all other than above 1st floor of the wall behind the stage. Great views down the hill too. Some of the old stone has wonderful wear marking, still lovey detail visible of the original stonemasons handiwork here and there. A great 30-45 min visit?
Amazing views, both during the day and at night, sitting at the top of a hill overlooking the city. Its quite humbling when you look at the scope of the Amphitheatre. If you have the chance to see a concert here or any kind of show I highly recommend it - the acoustics are great.(Just dont forget to bring a spray against mosquitoes because theres a lot of them during the summer evenings!)
Really worth a visit! The walk up to the amphitheater is wonderful, taking you through the oldest part of the city and winding its way through lanes and back streets. There are plenty of sites to visit on the way up including two impressive churches. The amphitheater is very well preserved and while I was there it was being used for opera performances. I did not go into the amphitheater but there are plenty of viewing places to look inside and great places to take photos. The walk up is quite easy although the cobblestone roads make it hard on your feet.
