Ancient Histria Citadel - Archaeological site in Constanta, Romania
If you are in the area then this is really worth visiting. Its really very interesting and the signs are in english too. It gets you thinking about the changes over the centuries.
A great experience. We even found an old mosaic. Ive also seen the old ditches on the road made for carts.I loved it. Its worth visiting. Ticket price for adults: 10 RON (2 €).
A really interesting place if you like ancient greek and roman historical places. First you can visit a little museum with the most interesting objects found here. Unfortunately a large part of the museum was closed (complete second floorwhen we were here. On the outside you can visit the really large excavation area. It will take you at least 1.5 hours to visit all. You can see roman baths, temples and the remains of two cathedrals and the city walls.
Beautiful remote area, a bit difficult to get to but as it is off the beaten path but it is worth it!
Amazing ruins, very well kept and a nice museum.
Very nice place and interesting history. Nice people as well. We had lunch to a place nearby, called Burenista cherhana, if you like fish, I strongly recommend the place.
Great ancient history here. Built by the greeks and took over by romans. A piece of beauty over 2000 years old.
Ancient Greek and Roman remains of a town that was abandoned 13 centuries ago. You can walk around and discover every corner. And dont forget to climb on the walls for a magnificent view! Also, see ancient artifacts in the building at the entrance.
Sufficiently explained with a lot of material and clear layout from C7 BC to C6 AD
Its great to spend time here. But, mind: Monday and Tuesday are days off. That is - the museum is closed. But, all the other days - enjoy
The entrance is cheap, 10 ron (in 2022), thats 2 eur. This is an ancient site and there is also a museum. You can spend your time outdoors & learn something new. You can also see the Sinoe lake from here, quite a sight! There is a terrace outside that serves very good food.May 2022- for the last 7km of the road, it is being rebuilt. Its fine to go by any car (its not "offroad"), just unpleasant. Hope it will be fixed soon. This is my second visit, I"ll come again.
It is a very interesting place, with huge potential and of considerably interest. Alas, the poor state of maintenance and poor accessibility does it harm.
Most ancient town in Romania
Love it! 😍This is one of many Dobrogeas hidden gems.If you like or just curious about history, considering this is one of the oldest city Romania, I totally recommend a visit 😉
Must visit!Great historical place, you can also visit the museum for 20 RON (romanian value - museum 10 ron + citadel 10 ron/ person.
Interesting but... Well it still is mostly pile of ancient stones. Roman wall is probably most interesting
Bust guide in the world! Must visit this place!
Nice historic romanian old town
A place full of history and information, great for a weekend visit.
More excavation happening whilst we were there and good to see a number of other tourists respectfly visiting. Wish more could be done to protect. Literally mosaic floors exposed to walkers and visibly deteriorating with every step. This is such important history. 14 centuries of Greco-Roman-Byzantine civilisation on the edge of the Black Sea and Danube Delta with so much more of it to discover, enjoy and learn from.
I was in awe with this place. Hadnt expected it to be so large. So much to see... Amazing
Unique experience for visiting this place. The gladiator guy Octavian is bringing life to this awesome place. If you are visiting Constanta it is worth going 40 km north to Histria.
Amazing! We arrived almost at the closing time and although we were in a hurry we still spent a full hour there. The fortress is huge and is very well maintained and also it has some explanatory signs
For those who are into history, it is a fascinating place: a citadel that was prosperous throughout several eras and knew great development in each and everyone of them.Although not completely dug out, the site shows plenty of influences from the different periods of times.
Antich Roman ruins, it took us about 30 minutes to visit the site, it is located in the countryside next to a lake.
Calm place, nice walk for a day off.
Wonderful and large place, you can spend there between 2-3 hours. Its a pity that its no so well maintained and also there just a few signs & descriptions of the place.
Nice but maintenance seems to be well, not that great. You are supposed to have lights to highlight the stellae and parts of the citadel... but they dont work. I hear this has been open before at night but now it closes at what, 6 pm. Poor guidance, only some panels. Wasted opportunity as the place is fantastic.
Very good preserved ruins, taking into consideration their age.Too bad that the conservation and protection works are not enough, a very large area is unprotected. The tourist signs are only a few.The feeling is that the time stopped before 1989.Missing any interactive, interresting information points.
Huge site with masive potential like many other sites in Dobrogea, poorly managed, lack of info signs, you can buy a printed guide if you want to read about the history.
Magnificent place to visit.
They restored some parts of the old city walls. Work is in progress but it looks very nice. Theres also a museum, but I did not have the time to visit it.
Very fascinating archelogical site. Its sad to see that the ruins are not so well preserved. Its a place where the time stood still.
Histria or Istros (Ancient Greek: Ἰστρίη, Thracian river god, Danube), was a Greek colony or polis (πόλις, citynear the mouths of the Danube (known as Ister in Ancient Greek), on the western coast of the Black Sea. Histria is derived from the Latin word "Hister", meaning "Danube", the river the city was located near
The museography in the museum is very poor (artefacts are extremely poorly documented, no value added and the ruins have no explanation. A couple of sign posts and posters.
I did like this place. It was big enough to walk around and explore without the massive crowds of the other sights have. Price was 10 for the external sight and 10 for the museum. Seriously, just make it 15 for both and be done with it. The ruins are actually ruins but still awesome when you look around and think how old this place is.... Did i really sit on the same rock that Zeus did? You never know😂
A very interesting experience. You can visit the ruins (10 leiand the museum (10 lei). There are still archeologists on the sit so you can see them at work. The museum is full of wasps and birds so you have to be a little cautious.
The place deserves a better advertising campaign and a professional management team. Unfortunately, nobody explains why some of the administrative buildings (are they administrative buildings?are made by stones taken from the archaeological site.Despite that, I strongly recommend to pay a visit to this stronghold of civilisation at the border of Greek and Roman empires in ancient times.
This historical place is impressive. Shortly put, the way it is preserved and documented does not really allow to understand this. It is so bad when you go to an attraction and you do not find out enough, so you are there and you Google about it. The city and citadel were huge in the old times. There are different buildings preserved, but for some the state is not good. There are missing signs, there is electric panel on the walls and many many other things which are shameful for our historians, archaeologist and management responsible for this. Leaving all this aside, the nature and the place are wonderful.
Extraordinary piece of history. The first known urban settlement recorded on Romanian soil.
The oldest of the Greek cities on the western Black Sea shores dating back to 7th century BC. It has been uncovered during the 20th century, it is exceptionally large and well preserved.
Im not an expert. The ruins are nice but nothing special in the museum. The settlement was very big.
Good to be visited at least once... ESPECIALLY for Romanian people,But not limited to !!!Buy the way BE CAREFUL on snakes !!!
Interesting place to visit if you like visiting castle ruins. Too bad that no part of it "survived", but if you like ruins its a cool place to visit, walk around and chill out. Beside the castle ruins they also have a museum filled with what they found on site. Another thing about it is that it has a restaurant there, but too bad that it is closed outside the season, so just bring something to drink if you plan to stay some time because therr is no shop around. Oh, and also you can take some pretty nice and cool photos, some angles are beautiful.
To visit, its a must! Ruins that prove the importance of place. Histria was a very important Polis, the oldest documented city on the Romanian territory! It was founded in the sec. VII B.C. by the Milesians, as a port at the Black Sea. Beautiful site, full of history.
Loved the fortress, very well preserved, I wandered there for about one hour. The museum is also interesting, but they didn’t open any windows and couldn’t breathe, I took a quick tour and left.
A truly wonderful citadel next to the Danube (Istru)filled with the rich history of all the people who stopped by.P.S.If youre lucky, you can find a snakes skin like me
The oldest modern city from Romania: Histria
Impressive, same as I remember, since I was just a kind, a must to see if you passing by
Ten years ago I visited Histria. The site was better managed, nu bushes between the ruins, more care for the museum.Today I can say that the road is bad, although Constanta is a wealthy county. The museum has a good colection of artefacts, but it isnt clean (dirty windows, maybe never washed, dirty exhibits from the lime witch falls from the sealing). The site isnt clean, many bushes and no care at all for the monuments, no signs, no explanationsTen years ago both columns in the picture were intact (one was missing the capitel)Today one is crumbbled in half, the other waits to fall with cracks in the upper part.Awfull managment, as for the entire county.Hope to publish the review, as the local authorities to read and change their policies.Lot of dust, spider webbs and indifference...Shame for the rich heritage!
