Ananuri, Georgia, Tskhinvali
Many battles took place at this historic castle complex with 2 churches & scenic river views.
Great historical places you can explore on your own. The complex isnt that big but you get some stunning with the Lake in the background.
Mesmerising views from the top of the tower. One of the busiest spots on the way to gudauri. There is ample parking space. The view from the church tower is awesome. Must visit. Horse riding also available.
An excellent view and a historic stronghold. The Ananuri fortress offers the best of both worlds. The tower west of the entrance is preserved with authenticity and offers breathtaking views through conical windows designed for the watch tower. A must visit if you are touring east georgia
Another awesome attraction on Georgia 🇬🇪 the church and the lake
Historical place and amazing scenery. Down there is a beautiful Lake must visit.
An ancient-looking fortress with a beautiful location above the lake. A must is to climb the tower (beautiful view of the church towersand go to the nearby bridge, from where you can also have a beautiful view of the whole castle.
Weekend gets busy, but on Saturday till lunchtime before tourist buses arrive from Mtskheta you can have a nice one 40-45 minutes to explore the whole complex, you can take a perfect picture of the complex from the bridge but mind your steps. Theres loos that cost 1 GEL so if you dont plan to stop till Gudauri or Pasanauri, its better to make a quick stop for the loo.For the quick snacks I wouldnt recommend because the choice isnt much, but you can buy Churchkhelas and dried fruit juices and some fruits(if its Summer-fall), one for 2-3 GEL. Inside the complex taking photos are allowed.
A great ancient church ⛪️ with waterfront view
Beautiful place, busy even on the weekdays during September. Worth a visit!
Very well maintained for its age, a nice piece of history up in the mountains. We visited in early September and it was already quite cool, near chilly, but still comfortable. Beautiful views all around, both of the buildings themselves, the architecture and carved work, and also the surrounding mountains and scenery. I walked the narrow stairs in the tower up to the top room, was a good experience.
For those who value cultural experiences in the beautiful natural surroundings.
A historical fortress, but the walkways are full of stones, and damaged. No proper maintenance for the building
Beautiful monestary that dominates the lake. Beautiful view. You can climb and walk on the ramparts and the tower, but be careful, there is no barrier.
A bit underwhelming, almost boring fortress, in complete falling-down mode, crumbling. No admission fee (parking 3GEL). Viewing platform (above sellershas some nice views but best view is from the walls of the fort looking at the lake. Note; the platform is narrow, rocky, rough and no guardrails anywhere. Beware. The inside of the church is very nice, ornate, dimly lit but interesting. Mosaics bleached, corroded, eroded but still visible. The outside, not much there. Plenty of construction debris, litter, loose bricks and holes. WC (north end of seller queueis actually very nice! 1GEL, clean, functional, soap even! 5 stars for the best WC on the military highway.Short walk to the lake, boats, families, BBQ. Again, no parking, crowded, but free.
Very nice place there, cool panorama. Church can be visited and there is a wild beach there as well ! I recommended it, parking is 3GEL for car
Historical place and amazing scenes. View from top is nice. Down near to the lake you can swim ride boat children play area etc. Boat ride they ask more but you can bargain full group to 100 and 150 laaries.
Historical place! Read the history, inside the church the feel was good. A lot of areas are closed which is a disappointment. You can enjoy some nice swimming in the river below the fortress.
My favorite fortress in georgia with the most amazing view ever 😍
Just beautiful, take some time to discover all the spots in and around the fortress.
Fortress come on the way to Gudauri. It architecture is marvelous and the panoramic view is great.Behind is the huge lake which goes further and connected to dam.You can swim, do paddle boat, speed boat or sun bath.Lot if stores around to buy souvenirs or get some drinks it refresh. Its must a visit place.
Nice place to visitThe church inside is so cool
A church with traditional defensive tactical architecture and amazing river view scenery 👌
Amazing view with ancient sights. After the fortress you can ride the horse and enjoy the wonderful lake. Highly recommend for families and kids.
Must visit. Beautiful story behind the church. If you go down further there is a lake. Visited during a day trip to Kazbegi (go with imperialtours they are really superb 45GEL).
Surrounding the fortress is a spectatular view of a reservoir and the mountains. Entrance is free a the structure is well-maintained.
You cannot miss Ananuri Castle on your way, this place will make you feel special with it’s beautiful nature and a taste of ancient history.
Perfect combination of antique Georgian architecture and late medieval period.Fascinating landscape, kids playground, beach...Water level changes due to the season
Remarkable place on the way to Kazbegi area.Perfect example of XVI-XVIII cc architecture.Dont rush and pay attention to the facade decoration and details of the main, Virgin Mary, church.
Beautiful castle in very authentic condition, beautiful old church inside, amazing views of the mountains and reservoir.
Stopped there while driving to Gudauri because of the magnificent view. Definitely recommend visiting, especially in summer, when the river is high
One of oldiest fortresses in georgia with its own story! "Must see" for everyone who visit georgia!
Such a simple and excellent spot with amazing natural views i loved every minute
Picturesque location with views of water and a park. People were usually camping and having picnics at the spot. Boating was available.
Marvelous complex with ancient church on the coast of giant reservoir. Complex and fortress havent renovated yet, hence its very interesting and exciting to discover its secrets. For those who want some additional emotions, fortress walls might give them. You can climb the walls here. Worthy placeUpd: so far so far
Lovely place to catch. We didnt spend much time but just the aura of that place was good
Great place to spend your weekend, superb views, good parking, nice embankment
An Orthodoxs church along the way where you take a break while travelling going to Gaudari and its really nice view...Amazing place..you buy some souveniers too...
Beautiful place excellent views. we stopped here while we are travelling to gudauri.no entrance fee.If you are a Cynophilist you can enjoy more.
One of the most beautiful landmarks of Georgia... The Fortress of Ananuri with the water reservoir in the background is simply beautiful. You can climb up the tower, but the very top provides you with almost no views, but the floor below has a nice window :)More on my Youtube Channel Lex Universe :)
Before you come to Gudauri, stop by this fortress. Its old and had a history. You can go upstairs for more nice view. Worthy to visit.
Amazing placeTaking you back to the old days storiesAmazing viewImpressive castle
Beautiful place but should be better taken care of. Some corners are borderline dangerous. Cool playground by the reservoir just below the castle. Bring food if you are planning to go around lunch time. There aren’t any (non-fast food/bazaar-typeplaces to eat!
Well maintained and beautiful place. A massive fortress with a panoramic view of mountains and river on the background. A big parking space with refreshment stores and washrooms also available. A must visit place while travelling to Gudauri.
Beautiful place, there were some maintenance work there but still we went inside and discovered it. It has a nice view on a breathtaking lake where there is swimming area, kids playing area, and water activities.
The view is amazing and the castle is very cool... The castle is a bit dirty because of reconstruction, but overall the place is great!
Beatiful place with nice views.Old fortress placed close with amazing lake. Lake appaeared because HES was built across mountains.
It’s a kinda small Fortress, from the Fortress are the walls and the towers left. The church has an beautiful stone work on one of their side. Climbing up in one of the towers doesn’t worth that much because it’s almost impossible to see over the walls.Sadly there are trash and building trash in the towers, no save way to see in the middle tower (where you can go upover the wall.Request an Entry Fee and clean up, there are enough Tourists around.
The place is nice and free to visit, we went there with a tour and it was to know the story behind it, otherwise it’s just another old church and fortress.
Beautiful castle with a view on the water reservoir deserving a 20-30 min stop. The castle is not renovated so its pretty dangerous to walk inside of the building. You can easily walk around on the outside though. The place is pretty touristic
One of the most beautiful places in Georgia. The view is breath taking. The Fortress is ancient with interesting history. I will say it is a must visit attraction if you visit the area. It is located on the Army road, north to Tbilisi. The entrance is free of charge. Highly recommended.
