200 Central Park West, New York, NY 10024, United States, Elmhurst
From dinosaurs to outer space and everything in between, this huge museum showcases natural wonders.
This place was a good way to spend the Saturday afternoon. The planetarium experience though only $4 more is worth it. I’d highly recommend to book the tickets online if you are going on the Weekend or you may stand for an hour in line to get tickets.Would be a good place to go during the summers.
We went around 3pm on a weekday and the museum was not very crowded. We stayed until closing at 5:30p and felt like we saw a lot (could have spent all day there). It is a beautiful museum with some wonderful exhibits and ended up being our favorite museum we visited in NYC.
Favourite museum Ive ever been to as a natural history nerd. Incredible. Only regret is not bringing a map and not doing it over the course of 2 days; the museum is that large. Another reason to come back and see all the other exhibits!
Museum of Natural HistorySuggested Time: 3hrs > 1 full day (depending on what you wish to see)*Hack > Included in your Sightseeing pass; Hop on/off stops at the museum.Museum of Natural History: you may remember it from the Ben Stiller movie, Night at the Museum. Yes, Rexxy is there, in all his huge glory! What else is there to see besides dinosaurs? Actually, quite a bit. Take a trip into deep space at the planetarium; its definitely worth it!Also take a dive into ancient and modern histories of people and civilizations across the world. Artifact and collections from almost every time period are available on offer with detailed information for your pleasure.
One of the best museums in New York with 4 floors of plenty to explore. Well worth it. Allow around 5-6 hours if you want to go through it properly. Food court is expensive so be warned.
Great experience. So much to see and do. That is possibly only the downside as the museum is so big it is easy to miss exhibits. Even with the interactive map app the place is like a maze ! But dont let that put you off if is a great place and I would definitely go back to see the bits I missed.
Absolutely fantastic and amazing museum. I visited many museums across the world but AMNH NYC is my favourite. You must book tickets online (received free tickets; corporate membership), need to go early as huge lineup will be there and map is a must. I enjoyed all exhibits but mostly the gems and stones section, giant whale, elephants, dinosaur and countries section. There is restaurant in the lower floor serves freshly cooked meals and food is really delicious. All staff are very helpful. Highly recommended
Such an amazing museum, youll definitely need the entire day to see everything but its so worth it! I loved all the exhibits, everything was so interesting. Definitely would come back.
I have been to this museum twice and I love it! They are always renovating and bringing new pieces to the museum. PLEASE!! dont forget to go down. Apart from the dinosaurs, I think that is the most fabulous thing about this museum. all the stone and culture that this floor has is exquisite! I would go again, waiting for the expansion of the part of the Amazonia that is under construction!
I liked the Museum overall, but some areas are in a serious need for renovation. For example, the minerals exhibition looks just amazing, it is quite brand new! I liked that the taxidermy is done in a way to represent animals in a natural disposition. I loved the North America Mammals section!
This place has a lot of cool stuff to see ranging from dinosaurs (T-Rex Scaleto sea mammals. It is a large museum and possibly one if the best museums in the country and you can easily spend over 2 hours here.
Try not to go on the weekend or be early and use the back entrance! We visited the museum on a national holiday (which we didn’t realizeand were quite surprised by the queue we saw half an hour before opening time.We than skipped breakfast and in through the back entrance which saved us so much time!Keep in mind that it’s rather cold due to the artifacts and bring at least a cozy hoody. The museum itself is stunning! Especially the dinosaurs, different cultures and photographies of insects (probably taken with an electronic microscope and colored afterwardswere phenomenal. We can also recommend to book one of the “extras”, as those exhibitions are a little more exclusive and well designed. Especially for space-enthusiasts, the special exhibition is worth a look. Also, you have a nice view on NYC’s skyline.
Our hotel gave us free museum admission tickets, so we went. We went on a Wednesday around 3pm and it was extremely busy! We had to wait at least 45 mins to even access the museum. Once we got in, they had a lot of cool exhibits and there was definitely a lot to see! Be sure to plan a couple of hours here, if you want to see everything. One of the best museums that weve ever been to!
It’s massive! With over 40 exhibitions, you could easily get lost in this huge museum. It’s so informative with displays of almost every aspect of nature and universe: ocean, forest, space, mammals from every continent, human origin, gems and minerals, etc. You need a whole day to explore all of them. The curations are very clear, explaining science in a simple understandable language. I especially like the human origin section which shows how and where we as a human being came from. The Hall of African Mammals was super impressive and amazing with life size animals. Make sure to download its official app Explorer to navigate inside the museum.
This museum is massive. I only had a few hours to spend, but feel like you could definitely spend an entire day here. It can be a little confusing to navigate, but they have maps available everywhere. Team was also super helpful in directing people and the lady working at the Dino Store was so nice.
If you love the Museums and you are in NYC, then you have to visit this one. 4 amazing floors. Come early because they close at 5:30pm.The ticket for no residents is $28, but ifyou are NYC resident or you have a friend from NYC, then you pay what you wish for the group (no more than ten persons for one resident).I visit this place with my husband, both from 🇨🇦 🍁 and we went with a friend from NYC... our visit was cheap thanks to her
You need 5 hours to spend and its about 5 km walk inside. Worth seeing once in a lifetime. The people of Asia and Africa section is very good...sit and take a selfie picture with Theodor Roosevelt on a bench on the entry floor..the roasted chicken in the basement food court is outstanding to eat..its economical fresh and tasty.
We only had an hour but could have easily spent a few more. Lots to see, very cool exhibits. Would recommend if you have some time to spare.
Amazing museum!! It is huge and if Id go again, I would take a full day to visit..There is so much to discover! You shouldn’t force yourself to walk through all of the halls as you probably wont have enough time to see everything. Id recommend to set a focus on what youre interested in the most and then see the rest after. Also, the planetarium is amazing - I watched the beyond earth show there and I was very fascinated by how well its done and how great the animation was.
Definitely a must visit ! So many exhibits, from rocks, gems and dinosaur fossils to space exploration and beyond. You will need about 4-5 hours to enjoy all the sections. Beside the permanent exhibitions, there are some specials, so look over their webpage for an updated schedule.Would be nice to start early, as there are so many things to see !
Best museum ever!! - so beautiful, classy, well displayed, great exhibitions, the service at ticket office. I loved everything! - I did manage to get lost even with my map but it was the least of problems. I think pre-paid online tickets could have a faster line etc.. but we discovered the entrance at the back near the subway which had less people. Great experience!! Great museum!!
Museums are always cool - and while I still favor the Met over this one, the Nat History museum has its own pull. The gems section was loaded, and there were plenty of cool interactive science-y stuff in the other sections that both kids and adults could enjoy.
Everything I hoped and dreamed it would be!Give yourself plenty of time when you visiting this magical museum, it’s much bigger than you may realize and you easily can lose yourself exploring. There are exhibits for all ages, interests, and background.
Great place to visit but ticketing system not convenient. For NY NJ CT residents, we should be able to complete purchasing online. An agent could double check our ID when we enter museum. We wasted time staying in-line for 30 mins. Line was long even on weekday (Thursday )past noon time.In general, the Museum is great for kids, wonderful displays. You can easily spend the whole day.
One of the best museums I have ever been to. It takes a whole day to see everything, or maybe two. The dinosaur section is phenomenal. The only thing that bothered me was the really low temperature in some of the halls.
Had a great time at the Museum of Natural History. I got my tickets online and the wait on line together in wasnt too long. The exhibits were all excellent. I especially loved the Rock & Mineral collection as well as the special Shark exhibit. I definitely recommend going during the week as I think its not as crowded.
Be aware that it is HUGE!If you have one day to visit, my recommendation would be to line up early, to maximize the time there and before it gets super hot if you visit in the summer. Get some area that you are interested and spend your focus there. You shouldn’t really force yourself to walk through all of the halls like I did, you might get tired and don’t have enough time to enjoy the things it offers fully.
A must see in NYC. Important - make a reservation in advance, visit early in the morning and use side entrance. Otherwise you may wait for a long time. The floor with dinosaurs and extinct animals is really amazing, lots of things to see. For the part with living animals, I believe it might be better to visit ZOO. The biodiversity part is kinda strange, recommend to skip it. From the exhibitions regarding human cultures, the one about Asian culture was imo the best.
This is my son’s favorite museum, we visit it at least twice per year. Better to come around 10 am so you spend less time queuing. One of the best museum I ever been.
American Museum of Natural History has always been one of my favorite museums. I went with a friend to see the Shark Exhibit, World Beyond Earth @ Hayden Planetarium and Wings Over Water. My friend and I also had lunch there it was very good! We both enjoyed our day. These are a few images of a peacock-eyed sting ray, whale shark and a goblin shark. A very interesting exhibit like so many there. I remember coming here as a child and the last time I was there was about almost 20 years ago.
The best ever!! You will need a map and also a full day to finish it all , One of the best museums Ive been to., The gem/geode collection was beautiful, the dinosaur exhibit was so big and had a lot of real fossils/bones. Loved seeing the different animal species. Also the sea creature exhibit was awesome 🤩
This museum is absolutely awesome if you are interested in history, space, animals, and rocks. It is incredibly easy to get lost in this expensive building filled with tons of exhibits.Tickets start at $23 for adults. If you are a New York resident and have proof, tickets become a “pay what you wish” option. No matter what you do, make sure you make take a reservations online! This is a must if you want to get into this museum. Lines are incredibly long and you will not be able to come here without a reservation online.I do wish this museum had a better flow as it can be quite confusing to get to different areas. They don’t all inner connect, making this kind of a crazy scramble of people at peak hours.I really enjoyed their exhibits of animals as well as their exhibits of different people throughout history.
The best Museum I have ever seen in my life. I would love to visit it again and spend a whole day through their floors. I must if you are a in NY.I would also recommend the special exhibition "Worlds Beyond Earth". You will love it.The restaurant at the ground floor was really good, a great option if you are looking for a quick meal.
Great museum with many interesting exhibits. A lot of animals, figures of people from different parts of the world and different times. You can also see many ancient tools, dishes and pieces of art. Definitely worth visiting.
Huge museum. You could spend the day there, particularly if you have children. Get a map when you enter: you will need it! Exhibits are beautifully curated and fascinating. Well worth the admission fee, particularly if visiting with a CityPass ticket. We visited at opening time and had to queue outside, but as soon as it opened we were admitted very quickly.
Such an iconic in epic Museum. You could spend so much time here, and the exhibits are incredible. We went toward the end of the day before they closed and they were a lot less people than if we came earlier. They are closed certain days of the week that were surprising to us, so just double check that they’re open before planning time there. Definitely a must see if you are visiting!
This is the best museum experience I have ever had. I spent an entire day there (11am-5pm), saw everything there was to see (and there was a lot to see - I walked more than 8km only inside the museum). There is something for everyone in there. The most impressive exhibits for me were, of course, the dinosaurs skeletons, and also the gemstones hall. Both were absolutely mesmerizing!Apt for all ages (families will enjoy it even more!)
Great museum! You can easily spend hours exploring. The highlight for us was the dinosaur section. Avoid birds of New York if youve just had lunch! The terrace was closed when we were there and we had to keep our mask on at all times due to COVID restrictions so we couldnt have a drink of water throughout. If you go during the pandemic have a drink just before going in.
One of the best museums Ive been to. Youll need a map, you can easily spend the whole day here. The gem/geode collection was beautiful, the dinosaur exhibit was so cool and had a lot of real fossils/bones. Loved seeing the different animal species. Also the sea creature exhibit was beautifully laid out!!!!
Renewed membership, which was pretty painless. Unfortunately the shark special exhibit was sold out, so if thats what your going to see definitely reserve tickets in advance for it. The newly completed gems & minerals exhibit was spectacular. One of the best exhibits the museum has ever put on. There are a few fun interactive bits of it as well, great for kids, and kids at heart
From dinosaur skeletons to stuffed mammals to indigenous people— the museum covers it all—extensive exhibits; plan where you want to focus. Highly recommend visiting, but also get advanced tickets as in busy times of the year, there can be a considerable wait to get in!
This place is phenomenal! This museum is so big, we spent two and a half hours making a very quick walk through, and only managed to make it through less than half. Amazing fossils of dinosaurs and other extinct animals. Residents of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut can pay what they wish for admission. One of the best natural history museums out there. A must visit!
Lots of exhibits. The Dinosaur and Gems exibits were my favorite. Seen the special Space show, definitely worth the extra $5. Its in a theater room with a dome screen.I was in the museum for 4.5 hours and needed to rush towards the end. Go early to see everything.
I personally enjoy museums and was excited for this museum. But it was bit underwhelming. Certain sections were great whereas others were just kind of fillers. Also the lighting was poor. Some of the exhibits were barely visible. Also expect long line up during entry. We had to wait about 1.5 hours on weekday to enter.
It was my fourth time in NYC and my first time touring the Museum. I always wanted to check it out after seeing Ben Stiller play in "Night at the Museum." It was a little disappointing to see the Museum not like the opening of the movie. But did check out the Butterfly Display, The Color Effects room, The Solar Effects Projector Room, and a documentary on Sea Otters. Was a cool experience.
It’s been a few years since I’ve visited the museum of natural history in NYC, and it has also been approximately 40 years since my first visit. It occurred to me how remarkable it was that the content, presentation, and experience felt remarkably fresh and relevant. Using the museum’s Explorer app to aid in navigation between exhibits and to expand on their content was a revelation. No debt museum is now pay as you wish for residence of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. Furthermore, if you have an IDNYC card, you’re entitled to a free one year membership for one adult and up to four children. Advance online registration for an entry time a lot is now required. I visited on a very busy winter break Monday with my nine-year-old daughter, and everyone was masked and respectful of Covid protocols. We had a blast making memories together; very highly recommended!
Absolutely great experience! We did the Haydn Planetarium space exhibit and the butterfly exhibit on top of the general tickets. Staff were very friendly and helpful for any questions we had. The staff in the butterfly and space exhibits were very engaging and informative. The gem exhibit was brilliant and had a huge assortment of different varieties of everything!
Use entrance on W 81st St for less wait. If you thoroughly enjoy this type of museum, set aside a few hours for this stop. Unfortunately we didnt have enough time to complete all of it. However, the levels we did finish were top notch, very informative, and very well constructed. Everything flows nicely from one section/hall to another. The Hall of Biodiversity was extremely interesting to see all different types of creatures side by side. Dinosaur exhibits were much more in depth than I expected with many I had never even heard of. Kids and adults alike will love this place. Tickets: We bought the New York Pass. You still NEED to reserve a time slot if you dont want to possibly wait to get in, even if you have a pass/voucher. You just scan your pass at Ticket Counter, they will ask your name and pull up your tickets. After walking almost an hour from Times Square to here, the line at the main entrance on Central Park West almost made us turn back. However, on the AMNH confirmation email it said there is another entrance to the Space Center on W 81st St. We went over there and there was almost no line. Friendly staff, vaccine card/ ID check was smooth and easy, ticket staff are quick. Highly recommended.
While I have been here many times before, this is my first time since the pandemic. The museum as always is sure to impress. I would recommend starting your day on the higher floors if you arrive early to get some cool pictures with the dinosaur fossils. With regards to the museum during covid:For starters, entry takes a bit of time. We arrived 15 after open and waited in line for about 20 minutes. It wasnt terrible. I recommend buying your tickets in advance. While it wont get you inside the building faster, it will allow you to bypass the long and slow ticket line that splits off once youre inside. There is no eating or drinking in the museum aside from inside the cafeteria. (Cafe on the upper floors is closed? Not sure whyThey have covered all water fountains with boxes (this is a questionable to me. Nearly everywhere you go these days allows you to take your mask down momentarily for food or water). Avoid the pizza in the cafeteria, its easily the worst pizza Ive ever had in my life. Gelato was good. Finally, the "controversial" statue of Roosevelt in front of the building is under heavy construction and has large tenting and barriers. You wont be getting a good picture of the outside of the museum any time soon.Still the museum I loved as a kid, but COVID has definitely made staying the whole day a bit more tough with not being able to stop and drink and eat at your leisure. Overheard many people discussed leaving and coming back so that they could eat.
This museum is worth your time and money. It is an educational trip for any age group. My favourite was the special exhibition World beyond Earth which I strongly recommend. They check for vaccination certificate at the entrance and requires you to wear mask for the entire tour duration.
