Loftlike destination for seafood, plus po' boys & other Southern fare & 15+ tap beers at the bar.
Really good drinks and atmosphere. Friendly staff and good food. The prices are my only personal complaint, but definitely worth giving it a shot.
Always have a wonderful time. the food is excellent.I took my wife out for her birthday and she love it.
If your looking for unique mention choices and above average food quality this is your place. One of our favorites in the area.
The food was ok but overpriced. Also the chairs in the dining room were very uncomfortable to sit on.
The oyster flight was perfect and fresh and Id recommend it highly. For my entree, I had the pork and scallops and it was divine swine and mollusk without question. The Berkshire tenderloin sat atop a bed of gnocchi and mushrooms and asparagus while the two giant sea scallops perched on a crispy piece of belly. The flavors all just perfectly complemented each other. If there was one thing Id change about the entire experience it would be the name of the restaurant. American Ale House implies to me that there will be a great selection of American craft beers. While there were a few decent selections, nothing really stood out and there were less than a dozen choices overall. I think the worst part about the name is that it really does nothing to even hint at how great the food is. Expanding the beer list would be easy enough (and should be donebut I really think they should rethink the name altogether to promote their strongest feature, their incredible menu. Hats off to the chef!
The ambience was quite good. We were there during a summer afternoon and it was very pleasant, surrounded by trees and bird songs was amazing. I guess they also do have live music indoors. The food was okay! The burgers were a bit greasy. Very little collection of beer, not sure y they named it as Ale house. The lobster roll was a disappointment, it was just like eating some vegetarian salad. Service was very slow.
American Ale House is without a doubt one of the best restaurants in State College. The quality of food here can easily match with higher end restaurants in bigger cities and the interior is gorgeous, not to mention their beautiful glass pavillon. Now if only they would bring back the lamb tacos...
Staff was really friendly. I enjoyed the turkey sandwich with the bacon jam. Definitely coming back for that sandwich again.
We were in State College for moving my son into his dorm room , and were looking for a good place to eat. We stumbled upon the American Ale House while driving back to our hotel and even though it looked like a real busy Friday night, we pulled in anyway. They seated us right away, and were very accommodating for my sons wheelchair. The service, and the food were both excellent, and we really enjoyed the outdoor dining. We look forward to returning whenever we are in the area.
We celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary at the American Ale House today with 35 family and friends. Excellent food, attentive staff. Wonderful day!
Food was very good, service was ok but could have been better. Restaurant was crowded but you could still have a reasonable conversation. Very clean. Would definitely go again.
Very nice seating options. Good was awesome. Our server was great. Drinks were on point. Would go back for sure.
Thanks for the great services from Emily and all the waiters/waitresses. We really enjoyed the lobster sandwich, Thai chicken salad, and mushroom rosemary with fried duck egg.added on Jul 20:They updated the menu and the paper towel. However I didn’t enjoy the basil flavor.
Solid spot for great oysters, mussels, and jambalaya. Food is always very good. Beer selection is typically very good as well. And the servers are friendly and knowledgeable. Atmosphere is relaxed and they had live music which was very cool. You cant go wrong at the Ale House!
Bison burger was fantastic. Salad left a lot to be desired. As always the atmosphere is welcoming and staff friendly, helpful and above all attentive. Our server noticed that I was looking around and immediately came over to see if we needed something. A real rarity. Tommy at the piano... what can I say. A wonderful experience.
Great food. Definitely on the more pricey side but price reflects the quality! Highly suggest the oyster nachos if you like fried oysters my fiancé and I get them every-time. The only thing I don’t like here is their eggs Benedict, surprisingly bland and just disappointing compared to their usual quality. Four stars because the drinks are not anything special but are pretty expensive. Still a great place for lunch or dinner and we will continue to come back!
This has been my favorite place for years. Went last night for our anniversary I dont think I will be back for a long time. Service not great. We got seated at 8:55 waitress finally waited on us to take our order at 9:07 we always get the clams from the bar area which they closed at 9. Maybe they should of ask if anyone wanted anything before closing it.
My son and i went to get pre-fathers day dinner. Great space. The sea food bar is awesome. The cook knows his craft. Dont miss it.
I stopped by for a couple gin and tonics and some calamari before I headed to the airport. The bartender was friendly and attentive. Its cool place with a great old school vibe. The squid was a little underwhelming for myself, I like it a bit crisper personally but the Asian doing sauce was a nice touch. Next time Im in State College I will definitely try it their dinner menu.
Our server was super friendly and had great suggestions. Nice cozy atmosphere. The place has tons of seating, and it was very busy on a weeknight so we were seated right away. Seafood is done very well and tastes fresh, despite PA being a ways from the sea.
Visiting from California for a work trip. Cocktails were delicious and refreshing, bartender was attentive and helpful. The ambiance was nice, decor is quite romantic and inviting. Ordered a chicken Ceasar salad and the chicken was very tender and juicy. Highly recommend!
The food was excellent and there was an extensive drinks list. Our server was attentive without being overly so. My only negatives were that the background music was so loud, it was hard to carry on a conversation, even after I asked for the volume to be turned down, and there was absolutely NO cell service, even after connecting to wifi.
Food was really tasty. I got the ribeye sandwich a ju. It was shaved ribeye steak with cheese. The bread was delicious. I didn’t like that they upcharge you for fries, but the rest of the food more than made up for it. Would recommend.
Mushroom raviolis were fantastic, calamari was nice and crispy, oysters expertly cut ., Served and had a great flavor. The berry tart was excellent served warn with really good strawberry ice cream and Chantilly cream
Very good dinner and nice atmosphere. Great service.
Went with a big group we were in town for a sports tournament. They easily accommodated 15 of us were really good with our children all sitting together and splitting up the checks. Raw bar is pretty good we got various foods everybody liked what they had. I personally had the filet mignon salad it was really really good for a salad since I’m fat and trying to lose weight. My wife had the Kobe sliders I tried a bite of them those were incredible.
Definitely not a young people spot, but a legit piano bar with people enjoying the hell out of some standards and great food. Get the bison burger!
Birthday lunch for our 13 yr. old.He loves AAH &G. Lots of oysters and favorite sandwich is the Bison Burger. (Hold the cheese, please)
Pretty decent menu, very nice beer selection. The dinners arent cheap, but if they are as good as the sandwiches, probably worth it. Sandwich prices are competitive for the area. I ordered the lobster roll, and it was pretty good. Not exactly what I was expecting, but not bad by any means. One really nice surprise was, although it wasnt mentioned on the menu, it came with waffle-cut sweet potato fries; that was nice. This was my second time here, and Ill be back again.
my favorite place to go when in the area. the ricotta appetizer and sliders are our favorites on the menu. I had the best whiskey sour I’ve ever had last night. a real treat.
We visited this place for dinner. It was not very busy when we reached so got a table straight away. This is an upscale restaurant with food that is well presented. They also have a dedicated oyster bar. I am not a fan of oysters but did try one and it was good.I wanted to try their steaks as they come highly recommended. I went with their house steak. As I am not used to the imperial system, I went with a 10 oz house steak and learned the hard lesson in unit conversion to realize that 10 oz is a very small steak.Anyway, the steak itself was tasty though a bit overdone. I had requested for medium so I had expected hot pink but it was more on the well done side.I had ordered a side of braised potato and that was truly delicious and it made up for the smaller steak to make a well rounded meal.As for drinks, they had my favorite beer Guinness on tap.
This is definitely one of the better restaurants you are going to find in theState College area. Also one of the best if you want fresh seafood. The food is always on point and very consistent. My favorite dish here is probably the jambalaya or gumbo. You honestly can’t go wrong with any of the food selections and there are plenty of drinks to choose from. The only knack I have on this place is that it’s very dark inside.
Strong recommend. Try the juicy steak, its flavor is so strong and amazing. I like the fries better than burger. It is crispy outside while soft inside. There is also Asian Flavor in this restaurant like the chicken salad and the pork belly. And the desserts’ sizes are so large and they taste great.
Great ambiance and service. Salmon burger was great but was overly salted for my taste.
Great service from Our waitress! She was amazing. Sarah was cool, kind, and knowledgeable. Our dinner was top! Oysters, tuna tartar, scallops, and charred octopus were to die for!!Entree lobster roll and steak sandwich were out of this world! The food was delicious! Relax vibe of this place. Will definitely come back. We came on a Sunday night. Bonus They had live music in the bar. Thank you.
Celebrated my birthday dinner here. They have unique menu with interesting blend of salads, sandwiches and burgers. The ambience is quite charming and lively with good staff to help you choose a good options from their menu. They can improve on their chairs!! Chairs are a bit uncomfortable for having a meal.!!
Nice assortment on the menu. Lots of individual priced fresh oysters to choose from for around $3 each or a variety for about $30. I ordered a Thai chicken salad and got a to go box for half of it. (High quality plastic!Had 4 nice sized chicken medallions that were grilled, angel hair that was well-sauced on greens for $16. Friend got the potato salad and lobster roll which was a cold lobster/crab salad served on a Texas toast type hot dog like brioche bun for only $13. No Old Bay in it but tasty nonetheless. Could choose to eat inside or outside during visit. Not too crowded in either location with seats available but looks good post covid restrictions and was more crowded than expected for a Monday in my opinion, which is a good thing! Would recommend going here for something just a bit different from your basic, boring menu like at other places.
Great place near Penn State for a classic steak meal. The beer selection is very good. The oyster happy hour on the Bluepoints was a welcome surprise between 5 an 7 PM. My friends had the Lamb chops that was excellent as well.
pros: nice service! (Especially the waiter with pony tail. He is very kindWonderful taste! Nice atmosphere at outside (inside is also good.Tidy restroom, various local hard drinkscons: bit pricycomment: This is good place for friends, family, and also couples. Among the appetizers, Kobe sliders are great, and all burgers and sandwiches are awesome. For hard drinks, if you like fruity ones, go with Jacks cider.
Its been almost a year since our last visit. Changes are on the menu. Oysters and Prime steaks for 2 of them. Serious remodeling. An oyster bar waits to be opened. New seating. New areas for private reservations. Calamari, my old favorite is still on the menu. Take a drive. Go mid-afternoon. Its not too busy or noisy. Enjoy.
I always love this place. The drinks and food are amazing. I love getting a drink and listening to the piano man on Saturday. If you are in a rush to get your food, they are not the fastest but it is worth it. Chill out with a drink and you will be alright
American Ale House is a very enjoyable eating experience! I loved the Cowboy Steak Sandwich, the steak was cooked just right, better than what you can find out a bunch of steak house. The environment is very nice and you can enjoy live music and jam out. Definitely recommend going there! Some on the meals are a little on the expensive side for a college student, but the sandwiches and appetizers are a comfortable price range. Enjoy!
Great experience.Food - 5/5Atmosphere - 5/5Cleanliness - 5/5Pricing - 5/5 ($160 for 5 people plus child with desert)Above all the piano player was the star of this place. He was very friendly and interacted with my 3 year old son which made our parties whole night. The staff in general were great and very friendly.I ordered the Impossible burger (pictured). First of all if you arent starving to death this may not be the sandwich for you. This thing is MASSIVE. Great and unique flavors and definitely worth the try. I should have swapped the fries out as Im not a fan of fries done like the ones that come with the sandwich. We also got the duck and scallops. Great flavors but a smaller portion for those conscientious of heavy portions. Our son got Mac & Cheese (you should DEFINITELY try itand it was awesome. We went over for my birthday dinner and have never been here before. Two other members of our party got the "Ham" burgers and another got the Bison burger. All of them enjoyed their meals.Deserts were great (we got cheesecake). Very well prepared and plated (pictured). Will definitely go here again to try other dishes.
We really enjoyed this place. We had the calamari, bison burger, and chicken tenders. All were very good. Great beer selection. Cool place. Service was great. I would definitely recommend this place.
Wow. My boyfriend and I have dedicated Friday nights for date night and we ended up at the Ale House last Friday night (1/29/21). This was one of the best places weve been to in awhile. We had gone to the Ale House once before over a year ago, but this dinner was exceptional. We ordered the Sheeps Milk Ricotta as an appetizer.. and wow. I havent had anything this good since I was in Germany! I ordered the New England Lobster Roll for my meal. It was served cold, and I think I wouldve liked it served warm. But I was also spoiled in Maine and do prefer mine warm (it was still delicious though!I also ordered a side of mashed potatoes because theyre my favorite. My boyfriend ordered the House Gumbo and hasnt stopped talking about it! His only complaint was, "I wish it was hotter." They asked him on a scale of 1-10 how hot would you like it, and he said 10. But he could eat straight hot peppers all day and not have a problem! I told him next time to ask for 20/10 on hotness. Definitely the perfect place for date night!
Bread is good. Steak is overcooked. I like the salad, and ricotta. There are more options at dinner time.
Great place outside of state college. The menu is great, and all the drinks are good too. Awesome beer selections.Casual spot.Awesome piano bar.
It was my first time in this restaurant and the third time for my husband. We ordered the Oyster Nachos and a side of Duck Fat Potatoes to start and they were both good especially the potatoes cooked in duck fat and topped with a duck egg. My husband got the Ale House Burger and he said it was pretty good. I got the Wagyu Corned Beef which was good also. Our waitress answered all the questions we had about the menu. We will definitely come back and try their dinner specials.
Definitely one of the best restaurants/bars in State College. The food is good. They have two menus and one of the menus is available at certain times. The service is okay but it could be better. They have a good flow of wines, so there is always a bottle opened recently.
Great place! Everything was great! the service, the food, drink, atmosphere etc, all good. The lamb ribs I had were delightful, the gf’s scallops were also yummy but the appetizer and dessert were our favorites. Cheese cake (no pic, sorrywith raspberry sorbet and lemon curd was heavenly and the figs with prosciutto and honeycomb was a big hit with the lady (i liked it too but she got moist over it).
