Quaint establishment featuring cold-cut submarine sandwiches & other Italian deli favorites.
Good subs and friendly service
Still good, bit not as much filling in the sandwiches as the old days. Still great taste!!!
The subs here are very fresh!!!!Must have the Alpine Sub ( Delicious )
So good you need to try this place great food friendly staff
Cant go wrong with the delicious subs, both the Alpine and the Veggie are favorites, be sure to get the extra hot peppers
So delicious always good
This place is a treasure, we are lucky to have them in the neighborhood. Always delicious and on point. Thank you!
Excellent And knowledgeable staff and the food is delicious they do the best sandwiches for miles!
Super fast service, bread is real good. Got the alpine. Wish it was a bit more full. The bread topping ratio seemed a bit off to me. Added spicy giardinera.
I love there Signature sandwich the Alpine
Delicious Italian sub (the Alpine)! Get hot giardiniera, and mayo and mustard.
Best subs in Chicago! Pictured is hot soppressata with hot giardiniera. Also not to be missed, the namesake sub, the deli selection of salads and pickles, and the cannolis. Service is on point with speed and ease every time. Independent, family owned and best in class.
Me and the family always get the alpine sandwich extra oil,we let it sit for about 10 minutes, and its the best, considering a subway sandwiches cost about the same if not more, the pasta salad is pretty good too
Stopped in near closing time on a weekend because I was craving an italian sub while I was running errands. The staff were great, and so was the sub! The biscotti I picked up on a whim were pretty tasty too. Ill definitely be back.
I was turned on to this tasty place when a good friend brought me an Alpine deli sub sandwich for lunch one day, I think its safe to say weve all had our fair share of various sub sandwiches, from various locations, BUT! without a doubt, this was one of the freshest, tastiest, well-balanced deli sub sandwiches I personally have ever eaten. Thanks Cindy
Had the Alpine Sub. Good solid 3.5 sandwich plus extra half star for pricing and extra half star for always friendly and speedy service!
Best sandwich spot in town. Even when its busy- they exemplify great customer service and get you in and out in a timely manner... will be back :)
The best Italian-style sub money can buy--and it doesnt take much money, either. Order "the Alpine" ASAP! The vegetarian sub is good too. This place is SO good.Only downside is the atmosphere is well like youd expect an Italian grocery to be. Get it to go or eat outside if its nice out.
Always friendly and the store always looks clean. Good products and customer service. The attendants are helpful, polite and happy to serve creating a cool and great place to shop.
The sandwiches at Alpine Food Shop are excellent and the service, friendly prompt and professional.Ive been enjoying them for over 25 years.During the 90s we would send someone in our fastest car to drive from the Loop to Elmwood Park to fetch sandwiches on Fridays. It started with an order of six, by the end of that first summer, over 50 more people were hooked and ordering these great Italian "sammies".Try em. Its worth the drive.
Poor customer service from the older lady with the short hair and tidied mask. She was very rude last week when I was in the shop. Today was even worst. I asked her to cut my sandwich in quarters Like the young man did last week for me since I’m not able to eat a lot at once due to medical reasons. Her response was NO very loud. They fall apart and we can’t wrap them. She said how about I give you a knife and you cut it. Which is not true it does not fall apart. Then she made my sandwich wrong and I had to correct her. So she ended up cutting it as I asked and it worked perfectly fine. This might of just made my decision of never coming back here ever again. My family has been coming here for over 20 years. I was not going to tip but I could not take it out on the rest of the staff for her being rude. I own a business my self fast food and this is not how you treat customers. I would of walked out but I waited all week for this sandwich.
I have always gone to alpines for years. This wonderful man named steven always helps me out and makes sandwiches perfectly. He has absolutely has amazing customer service & always makes you feel welcomed. Will keep coming back :)
Very rude phone service. I tried to call to place an order for potato salad, and I understand that i called at 1:50 on a Sunday when they close at 2pm. However, I was 1 block away from the establishment. The woman who answered the phone seemed annoyed that i was trying to place an order so close to their closing time. Last time I checked though, there is a pandemic going on, and thousands of restaurants are closing because of it so wouldnt you take any and all orders you can? Then when I told her that I was down the street and that all I wanted was potato salad she went on to say that they didnt have any. However, a friend of mine was in there not even 10 minutes before I called, and he said that they had plenty. Not a good look to lie to a customer. I will no longer be going to Alpine. Very disappointed.
Delicious subs, especially the Alpine! And as everyone else has been saying, you come in and get greeted by a friendly staff! Dont forget all the other items they offer as well...the meatballs ( needs thawingare really good; sometimes there is no need to make your own. If you want to support a local business, Alpine is definitely one of the go-to places!
If you want a nice shopping experience with good quality foods, I highly recommend visiting Alpine! No matter when you go in, someone greets you with a friendly welcome! Even when crowded, that personal welcome NEVER gets missed! The food will speak for itself; their subs, salads and customer service are my favorites!
Every review is consistent with praises of the food quality and it is certainly deserved. This review is to acknowledge their expertise in navigating a business during a pandemic. They have safety systems in place that are easy to abide. They are staffed sufficiently to expedite the service so they brief wait is nullified by how quickly they get you in and out. Most importantly is the smile on everyones faces. The great thing about their smiles are that even though you cant see them through their masks, you know that they are there. A smile is in a tone of voice or in someones eyes. You absolutely know when someone is smiling by the way they treat you and the people around you. Alpine has it down to a science. Alpine is an example of a business that will survive this global disaster. They are part of the solution. I hope you support them. Thank you, Alpine.
This place is my favorite. Alpine is a God’s Italian Sub, everything is fresh and taste like heaven. People there are active and welcoming.
Great service, unique flavor. And reasonable prices. I tried the sandwiches and they are great. But they also have some hidden surprises there, like some cookies that are awesome.
They are one of the best subs youll find in Chicago. Nothing more to say than that. Need to add to my review stop that Alpine today after almost a 20 hour work shift I placed the phone order for 3 subs and some other items on my way home I noticed I was missing one I called back the woman who answered the phone was more than polite expressed her sincere apologies because the sandwiches were wrapped I can only identify one of them should remember my order remade the two additional sandwiches at no charge. Above and beyond great customer service I feel I needed to share this with you as I will with other friends and family members all the more reason to try Alpine
The fresh, neighborhood Italian sub tradition lives on at Alpine. From the traditional Italian grocery fare to the man bringing out a pyramid of freshly baked loafs of bread every 10 minutes, to the smiles and friendly banter where "everybody knows your name." Its a gem.
My family has been buying Alpines for as long as I can remember. We cater it for many events, everyone always loves it. Its always a magical treat for us. Never had a bad experience or bad sandwich from there. Im not sure what sets these subs aside from the rest, but its a family favorite and the last sandwhich is always battled over.
The place for high quality subs. This place is always busy because the food is excellent. You can avoid the wait by calling ahead. Parking can be a little challenging. We usually go through the alley and park on the East side of the restaurant. Staff are friendly and very efficient.

One of the last of a dying breed of Italian delis. Great subs, made fresh to order. They also have a good assortment of jarred peppers and other relishes.
Maybe its the bread. Possibly because the prosciutto is so fresh and thinly sliced. It has to be something that keeps me coming back after two decades and millions of other sub/hero/hoagie/grinder/etc. Alpine is delicious and subjectively speaking and couched in objectivity - Alpine has the best sandwiches.

Stocked well enough to qualify as an Italian grocery, but the subs are the main event. Made to order, and great. The veggie sub is particularly outstanding: grilled eggplant and zucchini, cheese and a full complement of raw vegetables.
Excellent food, beef sandwich the best!! We will be regulars. Your staff show their personalities, are positive and helpful, without rushing the customers. Training and leadership by the owners shows.
I only give 2 stars because of the service, fast and friendly. As far as all of the reviews saying best sub sandwich around, are you nuts? Have you only tried this place? There is a couple slices of meat on the skimpy sandwich, you have to order double meat to compare it in size to other places. Its really nothing special flavor wise either. I would recommend all people who 5 star this place try Capri on North Ave, Franks Deli on Lake Street, Rexs in Norridge, Al& Joes in Franklin Park just to name a few. All have a much better sub.
Old school Italian grocery store and deli! Sandwiches and subs, several to choose from, are made fresh while you wait. Call ahead to avoid the lunch time rush. The owners and staff are very nice and you are usually greeted with a "hello" as soon as you enter the store. This has been, and is, my goto deli for nearly three decades and I still visit several times a month.
This is the quintessential sub shop in EP. They use the best bread on the market, Gonnella, and the perfect amount of meat and cheese. Get a lb. of their potato salad as well and you have the lunch we grew up on.
Always hits the spot, always fresh and fantastico! Recommend their house special "The Alpine", superb. Been going there for many years and never had a bad sandwich. Greeted with a smile when you walk in the door. Try a plate of the handmade cookies. They are quite special. They dont last a day in my house!
Ive been getting subs here for 10+ years and its never let me down. Delicious sub sandwiches and very friendly staff. I highly recommend the signature Alpine sub. Price is also very affordable for what you get. This is definitely a staple in the area that you need to check out.
The sandwich I had was delicious, but the amount of meat was maybe half of one of their competitors "notolli. The people who work there are very welcomeing. .this was my first time in there ,but I probably wont go back for the reason that ,there is not enough meat on the sandwiches. .I will stick to nottoli
Great "old school" Italian deli that Ive been coming to since I was kid...best sub sandwich on the planet by far! Dont forget to add their speciality "home made" giardiniera to take your sandwich to the next level! :-)
Well Marvin I am to African American Ive been coming here for about 20 years now I have never noticed anything racist about anyone in the store as a matter of fact Im eating a alpine right now. Its an Italian sandwich shop I dont think any of them toast subs if you want a toasted sub I think you should stick with subway and have a sandwich with the meat processed in a factory. Sorry you felt that way brother.
We have been looking for a place that makes a great Italian Sub since Aldos on Grand Avenue closed many years ago.Went here to try out their Alpine Sub because I read a review online that gave it high praise.I was impressed with the speed and efficiency of the preparation of the employees, but, the Sub did not live up to the hype. The sandwich was small and did not have all of the meat that I expect on an Italian Sub.I found the sandwich just okay.#CitiExperts @Localguides
You might like this story: My daughter has been in Indonesia with the Peace Corp. for over a year and is coming home for a visit. Do you know what she wants us to bring to the International Terminal for the home-coming? Alpine Sub. Yup. That is love of a good sandwich. Thanks, Alpine!
By far, the Alpine sandwich beats every other sub in Chicago! It hasnt changed since 1955 and I recommend ordering it with extra tomatoes and Italian oil.Their potato salad is worth a trip to Chicago alone! When I travel from CHI to ATL, everyone always asks, "Did you bring some of that amazing potato salad with you?". Yes, I normally bring 8lbs worth and the TSA folks have a fit.
Love the turkey sub with their oil mix and mayo. YUM!! Add a side of that fabulous potato salad and life doesnt get much better! Its the best~
