I loved this intriguing collection of megaliths near Evora. Theres information in English and plenty of parking, with a short walk to the site. Its also a great place to see cork trees. Recommend stopping at the visitor center that youll pass in a village before the last road. Theres a good interpretive display outside of the small building. Its all free.

Absolutely amazing place. So glad I visited, after reading some of the reviews regarding access via the dirt track. No problems at all in my motorhome, the track was dry, maybe a bit more difficult when wet though.

I love prehistoric stone works and this is a curious one. Takes a little effort to get there but the layout is very interesting.

Massive egg-shaped rocks that were places here eons ago for, perhaps, spiritual purposes? Worth the pit stop if you’re in to ancient history and getting off the beaten path. The olive trees surrounding the site are a beautiful added perk.

Its a cool little monument out in the middle of nowhere. It takes a few kilometers up a long and dusty road but its worth it when you get there. The cork Forest around it thats pretty amazing too.

Mythical place but without a guide its mostly an ancient rock garden. I suggest spending some money and hire a guide to explain the significance of the rocks and the location. The lack of information on site makes it very difficult for someone who hasnt studied them beforehand understand whats means what.

Feels eerily spiritual and mystical here with approximately 7000 years of history arranged in an oval on a downhill slope.Relatively easy to get here (follow the brown road signs instead of Google Maps). The last 3km of the journey is on a bumper dirt track. Some parts are narrower where realistically only 1 car can get through. The majority of the track can fit 2 cars (width). The dirt track ends in a parking lot (no markingsand from there, you will need to walk about 200 metres to reach the Cromlech.

A large prehistoric monument about 7 to 8 thousand years old. It is assembled with (approx.one hundred stones arranged in an oval shape oriented east-west on a slope terrain. Its main function is unknown. There are other prehistoric assemblies in the area (dolmens, menhirs). Beware that the main access (dirtroad is somewhat long and in rough shape for non AWD vehicles (this may be the only downside to visit).

I believe it is must to see if you are in Evora. Though the road does not have tarmac for the last couple of miles. The site is surrounding by cork trees - worth visiting on its own.Few stones still have engravings.Overall it is similar impression for me as it was in Stonehenge.Recommended!

Not too far from Evora so we thought that it might be worth a stop while we were visiting. And it was. Be aware that the road to the cromlech is not paved and some spots were a bit iffy when we were there. Nothing our crossover couldnt handle but a smaller car might have had some difficulties. I was also surprised by a large tour bus that somehow navigated the road to reach the site. I dont know how those drivers do it.

Reachable by car (by a dirty road), after a 200m trail (approximatelyby foot. In the end, youll see a set of stones, arranged in a circular way, down a small slope. Some of the stones have pre-historic drawings; try to find then. Nearby, there is also the Almendres Menhir. Good footwear is recommended.

Cant argue with free entry to a large and unspoiled prehistoric site. Very quiet, a local guide told me there were rarely more than ten visitors at a time.NOTE: Google says its open 24h a day, but the signage says it is only open from sunrise to sunset.

This is a great place to visit - just the drive in the countryside is worth making but the Cromlech itself is amazing. Very low key - almost nobody there, free parking and entrance to such an important monument!

Cant describe how it feels to visit a place that is there for more than 7000 years. And understand that they already understood astronomy so well, far better then many humans nowadays.

One of the most outstanding super ancient sites in Europe if not the world. The stones pre-date Stonehenge, and represent an advanced culture 7000 years ago. The tribe arranged the stones in a circular way down a small slope. Theories about the individual oblong stones and their arrangement include a phalanx of phalli, commonly worshipped in ancient cultures,Or More generally representing individuals /spirits, or perhaps representing a meeting place or convocation of the several individual neighboring tribes, each monument representing one tribe, forming a Congress or Convocation. A “college of shamans,” perhaps. Some show carved decorations with geometric figures, still visible after 7000 years of weather! The creators aligned their placements specially to align with the cosmos and with the winter and summer solstices. You take a thrilling dirt road drive through pristine, stunning Alentajo countryside, to a place where there is no Wi-Fi or noise except that of nature and your fellow visitors. It’s extremely peaceful and profound and a sensory delight. Spend time in all but also in reflection taking it in and what it means for us. The site wasn’t “discovered“ by academics until the 1960s; one can see why because it is so removed from modern society. However, the Local ranchers and farmers Have long known about these and many other archaeological sites all in the same area of Alentajo, covering a span of at least 7000 years from the birth is farming settlements to the relatively “modern” ruins of the the Roman empire. This is a “must see” destination if you’re going to Evora. This region of Portugal is an archeological miner’s field of gold, rich in the rough diamonds of archaeological treasures, most barely excavated. Dig in and discover!

A humbling experience, that reminds you of a culture that lasted thousands of years while our own is comparatively young. Access is tough but thats a good thing since it will keep the casually interested away. Even on stormy, rainy days people will visit because it feels magic.

A very beautiful and interesting place to visit. There are many megalithic neolithic rocks in the area but in this archaeological site you can definitely enjoy an amazing sunset with a colorful sky in a location full of history. Its only 13km from Evora and it definitely worth a visit!!

I am a little bit disappointed by this. I truly was convinced to have a great spiritual experience in this reserved place in the forest.I touched stones and thought deeply on the story of ancient humans, but i did not felt good vibes. Sad experience…

Interesting site. However, bare in mind to drive all the way up there with the car. There is a dedicated car parking just 200 meters in front of the stones. The road to the parking lot is a three kilometer bumpy dust road. Our Seat Ibiza didnt struggle, but sometimes there were quite some gaps and it required a bit of skills, at least. Worth the stop

Im not sure why people suggest staying here for a long time. Im neither a geologist nor a spiritualist. If youre neither of them either, 30 minutes will be enough to witness those weird stones. They look like dinosaur eggs :wow interesting place, but I wouldnt come back again. The road to this place is simply horrible. We drove 20 km/hour and still were afraid to lose a wheel.

Not a heavy traffic location, the dirt road is full of ruts. The funeral site is pretty cool and about a two minute walk from the parking lot. There is ample parking for a number of cars. We visited around 1500 and we were the only ones there for over 10min. Have the kids look at the layout map and find the engraved stones as part of the adventure. There is a little bit of shade, but bring water. There is a small town with a gift shop and restaurants (2just before the dirt road.

Great place to visit and find out about the stones and the environment. The shop had some amazing replica pots and Roman lamps. Sadly no restaurant but drinks and ice cream and toilet available. Quite a long dusty road to visit the stones, the interpretation centre is on the tarmac road about 4 km from the stones. Enchanting site.

Very nice and peaceful megalithic stones enclosure, which lies roughly 20km from Évora. You can easily rent bikes in town and plan a day trip to this enchanting location. Comparable to a small and more scattered version of Stonehenge.

It’s nice to see such an ancient enterprise, but the road to get there is quite dificult by car to far by foot. We’ve seen some turistic buses on the road. But you can get there by your own. A good place to take the kids.

One of the highlights of our visit to Portugal. A sacred and fascinating arrangement of stones dating back to the Neolithic era. After seeing so many splendidly ornate cathedrals in Portugal, the stark minimalism and mysticism of these structures was profoundly moving. A not-to-miss privilege to spend quiet time reflecting on the significance of this site.Fortunately we had finished our visit and were just leaving by the time a local tour guide arrived with a family group who permitted their hyperactive children to run amongst the sacred stones and even climb and jump on them. Due to such behaviour the site is likely to have to be protected behind barbed wire soon, which might diminish this otherwise mindblowing experience.

An incredible megalithic structure which will be of interest to anyone who is fascinated by ancient civilisations and their knowledge of astrology, solar, and lunar calendars. Three of the huge stones which run the length of the structure are perfectly aligned to east; and some of the stones have circular carvings which are not fully understood. The walk through the cork oaks is absolutely beautiful and lined the entire way with a stunning variety of wild flowers ... well worth a visit for that alone.

We visited the two places which are about 2 km from eachother. The road was dusty but rather good for a dustroad. In fact it is not much more than a bunch of stones. We enjoyed especially the flowers and cork trees. Portugal is a beautiful country.

The menhirs and the view are amazing! But all the tourists blatantly disregarding the rules about going among them or touching them was upsetting. People were putting their children on top of them!! DONT TOUCH THE STONES. Theyre thousands of years old and very fragile. If we all want to enjoy them in the future, we need to respect them. Five stars for the ancient people, minus one for the modern ones.
