Algorithm Coffee & Juice - Cafe in Shama Junction, Ghana
Great little coffee place where you can settle in and work for an extended period on one of their large tables. Its a very industrial modern decor but comfortable and the coffee is consistently on point.
A tad bit overpriced coffee but it is absolutely delicious. Great place to get some work done, oddly quiet even when its full. The internet speed is really great too, wanted to stay longer but they close at 3 pm.
Little bit dim for working on laptop but lots of power outlets and WiFi. Decor is attractive. Acoustics not the best
A really terrific place with plenty of tables for those days when you have to work on your laptop for hours but just cant stand to be in your apartment anymore! While this is a coffee shop, the tea here is excellent! I love whatever brand of Earl Grey they have on stock. The place is always clean, never too loud, and I can usually find an outlet to plug into.Parking can be a bit tight on University so I tend to park on the side streets or bike. The bathroom is always clean, too, which means a lot to me!All in all, highly recommended especially if you need to get out of the house to work!
Modern spacious cafe with proper barrista! Conveniently located across Berkeley West branch library on University Avenue. Plenty of 1 hour coin op parking. All day free parking on side streets.
Great little coffee go-to, especially before work. Has variety of milks for fancy caffeine containing beverages and a nice assortment of breakfast snacks
The Coffee is good, the selection is limited but decent enough. Alot of people come here for work/studying, this place has large tables and plugs (while rareare there. That said though I was very unhappy with the wifi. After ordering when asking for the code was told to connect to 1122U (the leasing office next door.this was a super limited connection I couldnt even access Algorithms own website. Even though a SSID existed for Algorithm coffee I was told a few times that it was not an actual connection, or that it didnt exist at all. Until the issue is fixed I cant recommend this place for anything other than a quick stop for coffee, and there are better places for that in the area.
Solid place. I rate places based on working remote perspective. Overall coffee is pretty solid (actually editing after drinking it a little more its pretty damn good. Single origin is what I got with oat milk). There are plenty of desks and they are reasonably sized. Not all desks have outlets but they do have a fair number so fairly sure you shouldnt have issues finding one. Some of the tables are not close to one. They forgot one of my orders but were nice when I approached them about it (happens). This place has ridiculous internet speed (I got 170 Mbps???so enjoy that but every now and then it flaked out. I think if you can consider using the 2.4 wifi because seemed more stable. Music is really loud though so if you got noise cancelling headphones, bring those if you can.
Awesome space to relax or work. Came here early in the morning when it was still slow. Very personable staff. Coffee was good, but not fantastic, I’ll have to come again to see if it was a one-off thing. Will definitely be studying/working here, though: lots of sturdy tables and natural lighting make this an ideal space to set up shop and be productive.
that is some really good coffee and the place has a more traditional bay java house feel. I was surprised to find i didnt regret paying the 4 dollars, cant afford the habit but its nice sometimes
I really liked their coffee. Ambiance and vibe was pretty hipster but very bare, if youre into that. Croissant was delicious.
Waited twenty minutes for my pour over. The spaced out beanie dude realized that he forgot to serve it. Waited another ten to get it. Music was annoying and jazzy. Not necessarily bad service, just sloppy.
Coffee isn’t bad, but the coffee bar is dirty and not well kept. I sat at the bar and not once saw the two folks working clean or wipe down the barista area. Bathrooms are also filthy, which makes me wonder about overall cleanliness. I will not be back.
Have visited only 2 times while passing through Berkeley. I had typed into Yelp "Best Coffee Berkeley" and Algorithm showed up at the top (after the sponsored ads). They are well worth the stop. Bit pricey for coffee ($5 for a typical small size cup), but their coffee is way superior to Starbucks and even Peets. Not a bitter sip. Smooth to the end. I had their Single and Verasity and both are excellent. Front hosts have been friendly guys who get along with the regulars. :)
We decided to check this place out the past Saturday morning. I had a nice overall impression of the decor and the variety of coffee and pastry. I was glad that there was oatly, even though it wasn’t the barista version. However, my $4.25 ($5.25 with $1 oatmilklatte was a steamed milk in a paper cup, topped with an espresso poured right into the milk. And because we ordered two cups, I had a watch the barista do the same thing again. It still tasted good, but I don’t understand why all the google pictures looked like normal coffee while I just paid for a visual wake-me-up.
I never thought an americano coffee could taste that delicious! Thank you for providing such a great coffee and pastry in such a peaceful and clean environment :)
Amazing coffee, the coolest of cool vibes and a friendly atmosphere. Whats not to love, cheers! ☕️
Pretty okay. Kinda slow. Makes a good cup of coffee, but the pour over coffee isnt much different from what you can make at home with your own pour over setup. Tasty coffee roasts though.
The only reason I dont give it 6 stars is because I cant and because they close at 15:00 during the week. Out of all the coffee shops Ive been to in my 5 years living in Berkeley this place exceeds them. The ambient, the music, the employees, the quality of tea everything goes beyond my expectations. Just hope it doesnt become crowded but they deserve the business.
This coffee shop is quite spacious and has a few power outlets. There are a couple of long tables for people to share. Will be back!
The barista was the first man with a pony tail I actually liked. Plus, the coffee (double shot cappuccinowas tremendous and well balanced. Open atmosphere. A bit industrial. But I took it to go to my hotel right across the street. Ill be back while in town.
Good coffee, and espresso drinks. They also offer a few teas, hot chocolate and they offer a small number of pasteries. Friendly owners. Hoping they will expand the menu to include other food items as they grow. Layed back atmosphere and service dog friendly. Good place for small meetings.
A year later they are still providing great coffee in a great atmosphere!Great coffee! Plus great people and pastries and screaming fast WiFi too. Good place for working and studying.
Probably the best cafe in Berkeley. Coffee (even the big batchis consistently amazing, music great, staff smart.
Fantastic staff and owner.Those. Walnut ...chocolate ...cookies Are GREAT I HAD 2 INSTEAD OF THE BLUEBERRY MUFFINS. which are my favorites with Butter Heated up. Yumm
Quirky, and not in a good way. I arrived a little before 8 a.m. on a weekday. Youd figure a coffee shop would be busy, but there was only one customer seated inside, and only one employee. (Friendly, he is the only reason this review is two starts and not one.)Theres no menu except a little board with their coffee prices (shot of espresso is $3. A 12oz cupajoe is $2.75). And apparently no food except two cardboard boxes of usual and some unusual (asparagus, anyone?pastries. I tried the goat cheese pretzel pastry which the friendly barista happily offered to "heat up" for me. The nuked goat tasted about as youd imagine, pungent and mushy. The latte was just okay. The interior has a grim, nightmarish quality. The kind of coffee shop youd expect to find in hell. Concrete and metal surfaces, uncomfortable seating on hard plastic chairs and cold metal stools facing long tables that seated 8 or more. (No cosy 2-tops or 4-tops for you. You must share!). The tabletops were made of rough reclaimed wood that made me worry about splinters. The only art on the bare whitewashed walls (besides the forgettable store logo, which looks like somebody threw spaghetti on a pizza traywere some paintings for sale by a local artist that also looked like it would be at home in hell. The music was of the soft, moaning, mumbling-suicidally-depressed-millennial sort. The wifi worked great, but then the place was nearly empty. The "algorithm" for this coffee shop?1. Stop.2. Run.3. Go to the roastery around the corner.
Best coffee in Berkeley hands down. Rivaling the best in the bay easily. Great music and ambiance also, but who cares with coffee this good.
First visit here and I was impressed by the detail and care they have put into this nice little place on University and San Pablo. They offer you two options for coffee; Guatemala or Ethiopian. I got the Ethiopian blend I really liked it. Got their mushroom/asparagus savory pastry as well which was probably my favorite thing on their menu. Will definitely go back.
Espresso is made with a dark roast. Espresso extraction was just okay on both a latte and a cappuccino. Milk was steamed well (not too hot, good foam consistency). Organic Clover whole milk used.Good aesthetic feel inside, plenty of seating, good WiFi.Overall positive experience. If they improved their extraction technique and balanced the sugars in their roast better, it would easily be 5 stars.
Hip joint with mostly people working on laptops when I was there, but super chill and good coffee. Had the cold brew and loved it. Parking isnt amazing because of the busy street and easy to miss from the road.
Great coffee. Free WiFi. Friendly staff. Clean and modern. When its busy, the wifi gets overloaded. They have small bites, nothing big to eat.
Tea was good, interior is minimalistic. No one around is talking, everyone is in their laptops. Not sure if its a good thing but it was a funny experience.
The coffee is great and not too pricey for what you get. However, I ordered an everything bagel with cream cheese “for here” and it came with the cream cheese on the side with a flimsy knife to spread it myself. The everything bagels are also quite liberally sprinkled with fennel seeds, which I’d never had before and was a bit overpowering in its licorice flavor. The music is nice in the background and the layout is very open and yet cozy, but it was very dark when I was there in the afternoon.
Great coffee, among the best Ive had in Berkeley. Tons of seating to get work done, reasonable Wi-Fi speed. Good music.
Great third wave coffee shop. I had a pourover that did not disappoint. The chai was great too. The staff are really friendly. Love the tables and wifi for working.
Great coffee and bagels, to go or to stay. Good studying atmosphere.
Bright, enjoyable environment...excellent service and attention to detail!
Friendly but low contact staff. Great coffee. Stark environment but conducive to sitting down with a laptop.
Great coffee; but the seating space is too warm for my liking. (And this is across days and weeks)
Great pour over coffee. Nice interior with large tables, easy to come and work or just enjoy!
Great tasting espresso drinks. Lots of room to sit and work. Good atmosphere.
There is always plenty of seating. It is a great place to hang with friends or to tune everything out and get some work done. Each coffee is specially made to order, so it can take a few minutes to get - this is not a chain place that turns out fake coffee drinks.
Comfortable, with great coffee options. Location is rather remote, so its not too crowded, which combined with the free wifi makes it a great place to work for a bit.
Really good coffee, and the best pastries in the neighborhood. Really popular for people using the internet, so seating can be limited. They obviously care about the coffee they provide.
First time, soy latte was delicious. Im happy the espresso tasted great, as I hate getting disappointed with bad shots. Very friendly staff, love the large work space. Look forward to coming back.
Great coffee, friendly staff, nice big tables for work, and the ever-important outlets. Love this place!
Clean, open, relaxed and excellent pastries.I ordered a simple Chai and Chocolate Croissant and expected nothing more, nothing less.Staked my spot out, unloaded my gear and took a bite while checking my e-mail, "Whoah, this is delicious!" I look down and realize that these guys must mean business. The croissant was flakey, buttery and the chocolate was delicious - not that nasty sweet chocolate in most Choco-ssants. Ive made my rounds throughout the Bay Area and its a rare occasion to be surprised by a pastry. Its really one of my only vices. Back to the croissant - It was honestly the best croissant Ive had since my last visit to France. Better than the made-fresh-daily pastries at Gold Coast Coffee & Bakery in Duncans Mills, Ca (Which is saying a lot. If you are ever in Duncans Mills, its worth the stopYeah, I remember my pastries folks. The Chai took about 5 minutes longer than the normal Chia I order. I look over to find the Barista friggin brewing real loose leaf masala chai in one of those fancy squiggly neck tea pots. Ive had good Chai and Ive had horrible Chai *cough* *Staryucks* *cough*, but every once in a while Im pleasantly surprised. The Chai was a solid 8.5 out of 10. The only thing missing was pepper...not enough pepper in the brew. When he served me the Chai, I was presented with my very own work of art. See attached picture.Great little find. They have their algorithm down. ;)
Cafe Yesterday has improved its interior and added much better seating for working on your computer. Its definitely a "worky" kind of cafe, but it has really tasty coffee at reasonable prices, a good atmosphere, and nice people.
This place is amazing, and pulls the best espresso shots in the Bay Area, hands down. Ian and crew really know their coffee, and will happily geek out with fellow coffee lovers.Even the drip coffee is made with love, and does bold magic in your mouth. I cannot rate this place high enough.
I used to come to Café Yesterday when it occupied this spot, so I automatically gravitated here when Algorithm opened up. The first thing that’s noticeable is how much brighter and minimal the space is compared to Café Yesterday. So if you’re looking for a comfy old sofa or armchair, you won’t find it here, but it’s still welcoming thanks to the art on the walls and sunflowers on the coffee bar. There are long tables made from reclaimed wood and a selection of stools or chairs and overall it reminds me a bit of Blue Bottle on Broadway. On a Saturday afternoon, with about a dozen people inside, there’s still a ton of space. WiFi is very fast, power outlets are available, and the availability of free unlimited parking around the corner on Curtis St. is a bonus. One of Radiohead’s mellower albums is playing and there are a few hipsters here, but it’s a good mix of people. The staff members are super-friendly – the barista patiently explained their coffee options and asked the owner (Aaronfor more details about where they buy their beans. For now they buy green coffee locally at Royal coffee and other places around the Bay Area and roast it themselves. Their pastries are from Firebrand bakery – baked in a wood oven in Oakland. I had a drip Ethiopian coffee ($2.50 for a mediumand it was great – a little like Stumptown (which they brew at Flour and Co. up the streetand a fruity-cheese Danish pastry ($4which was also really good. Since Nathan C. mentioned their decaf being good, I went back for one (also $2.50 for 12 oz). Aaron explained that the coffee (a Mexican-Ethiopian blendis decaffeinated by a natural water-based process rather than chemically. I don’t drink a lot of decaf coffee and wasn’t aware that it’s hard to find good decaf, but this cup was at least as good as the regular coffee that I’d had just before. I had a vegetarian tart ($4.50, I thinkto go with it – mushroom and leek – which was very fresh, light, and flaky like the Danish. Firebrand seem to know their pastry.Overall, I think it’s a similar experience to Flour & Co. and it’s great that this area now has two excellent cafes. The main difference is that Algorithm is more of a laptop-friendly place and very coffee-focused while Flour & Co. has no WiFi and has more food available. Both are excellent though. In addition to the normal rating, I’m giving Algorithm 5/5 green stars for social and environmental impact. The coffee that they buy is Fair Trade and organic. All of their milk and half-n-half is Clover Organic (Aaron – you should mention this on your price board!and they also have Pacific almond milk. They plan to move into a direct trade relationship with coffee farmers, but I think they are taking things one step at a time. Similarly they plan to make their own food eventually but are just offering the Firebrand pastries for now. You can read about Algorithm and Firebrand on Berkeleyside for more details. I’m looking forward to seeing that food they offer in future and will update at that point.
