Santo Domingo 10212, Dominican Republic, Monte Plata
Rebuilt 1500s palace, once the seat of Spanish colonial government, with fine art & period displays.
Amazed how to find out how soon the building was built after Colunbus landed there. It been a few years since I was there, but I always remember the nice breeze that went through the major hallway and rooms. Also the view of the river with a large cruise docked.
A nice church/museum with a lot of history. We did not have the chance to take a look inside since its a Sunday but a guide showed us around with detailed information. A place worth visit.
Had a fantastic tour with a guide who studied Art History and I can tell that he made all the difference. The well restored site was guided by someone who gave more than a generic tour but instead gave one that respected the site and its history and significance. He gave trivia and facts and answered all the questions we could have. I forgot to ask for his name but thank you for a great tour!
Interested place to visit . Price is cheap to enter too .
Nice place to visit, better during the afternoon the weather is nicer
Beautiful Old historical residential museum in the heart of Zona Colonial which was built by Diego Columbus. The ticket to enter was about $2/person. It comes with an audio device where you can learn about the history of the museum and each room. On the second floor, you can see a beautiful view of the river and the Colonial area. We spent about 30-45 minutes here and its definitely worth visiting if you are in the colonial area. It was not crowded and the staffs were pleasant.
Beautiful piece of history here.
"Alcázar de Colón" Columbus Alcazar (Residence of the king or sovereign of a country, its a Fortified castle located in a strategic place especially when it is walled). Is the first Spanish palace built in the Americas. Located in Santo Domingo city, on the Dominican Republics colonial area. The place forms part of the patrimonial colonial UNESCO.
Its ok
If you want to visit the entire colonial zone, start here. Go all the way down and come back by the opposing street so you don’t have to walk and see everything twice. If you have a car, there is a free and safe parking spot very close.
It was interesting going back in time like that, visiting theyre home and walking through its walls. The fee was very low for visiting the museum, only 2$ and the included audio tour was very good and helpful.
Fabulous piece of history. Full of historical pieces.
Such a nice landmark, especially at night. You can have food, drinks or a cigar right across the way so it’s such a nice place for an evening out
Alcazar de Colon is the oldest royal residential edifice in all Americas. It was built under the Diego Columbus (Christofers sonorders as his residence he shared with his wife Maria de Toledo in the early 16 c.Its a two-story bldg - one side oriented at Ozama river with great views of the river and Columbus lighthouse and the other side towards the big Plaza de Espana sq.Entry fee is cheap - few bucks, and you need less than an hour for a visit.Imo, the authenticity of the furniture is questionable, as the palace was looted many times, heavily by pirate Drake, but it is still a great place to visit in Zona Colonial.
Not crowded, everything was closed because festivities but overall is just a great experience to visit, the Alcázar de Colón. They still have tourists guides that will explain everything and the story of the place. There are several locations to visit around the area too.
Museum is reasonably interesting but quite small with little description on the artifacts. Audioguides are given out at the entrance however I had a tour goide and dont believe I got as much out of it as I might have, since explanation was about little other than it being Christopher Columbus house which was destroyed by Frances Drake. Its unfortunate the remainder of the building to give a truer idea of how the place functioned.
Great museum right in the heart of Colonial zone, definitely worth visiting while in Santo Domingo! Recommend taking the audio guide, it was pretty interesting!
The Alcázar de Colón was built between 1511 and 1514, following the influences of the one in Mancera de Abajo , in Salamanca (Spain), of which ruins are still preserved. The name of the architect who carried out the construction of this fortified palace is unknown . Style gothic mudejar mostly, Alcazar also has some features Renaissance , remarkable in its arcades, as well as the Elizabethan style observable in the tassels that adorn it. The building was constructed using masonry made of coral rocks. Originally the residence had 55 rooms, of which only 22 remain. It was the first fortified palace built in Hispanic times. Great Spanish conquerors such as Hernán Cortés and Pedro de Alvarado passed through it.It is the only known residence of a member of the Colón family, in addition to Cristóbals birthplace, which is still in Genoa. Juana, Isabel, Luis and Cristóbal Colón de Toledo were born in the palace , children of Don Diego Colón and his wife Maria Alvarez de Toledo. Diego Colón died in Spain in 1526 but María Álvarez de Toledo, his widow , remained there until her death in 1549. Three generations of the Colón de Toledo family inhabited it, possibly until the year 1577.
A lot history among those walls.
Inexpensive museum... (can those words be used in the same sentence?where you can learn some things about the history of the Dominican Republic and Diego Columbus. $2 USD includes audio tour.
The cool museum. The exibition area is not big but audio guides on English helps.I recomend to visit it in case you are nearly colonial district.
Classical historical place in a beautiful part of Santo Domingo, worth the visit.
This magnificent building with characteristics of Renaissance and Elizabethan styles, was granted by King Ferdinand to Don Diego Colón, the first-born son of Christopher Columbus and the fourth governor of the Indies. It served as the governors family home and mansion. The Alcazar de Diego Colón is currently the most visited museum in the Dominican Republic and has a collection of works of art from the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
A magical place where the present and the past come together to bring you an unforgettable experience at night.
An amazing place full of history. I visited it 15 years ago and Im eager to come back.
Good example of Spanish Conquest architecture. Also, many historical firsts like the first Catholic church, first university and more
Diego Colon House. Nice place, super huge, clean
Great place. Clean, full of history, and Dominican Ambient !
The place is beautiful and curation is well done. The entrance included a guided tour. The tour guide provided interesting information about the history of the place in a funny manner. They had the real document of “Las Capitulaciones de Santa Fé” . The museum is small and can be seen in 30 minutes.
The alcazar it’s an UNESCO world heritage site, it was formerly the house of Colombia son.The building was restored in the 90’s, and even if the furniture it’s not original to the place, it is however original to the time period and geographic location. Visiting the place is a great way to know the local history and cultural legacy.
Very interesting walk through the former house of Diego Columbus, the first born son of Christopher Columbus. There is also an audio guide available. Price to enter was 100 DOP, on 11.30.19
A little small but nice to visit with audio guide.
Great historical place
Really nice conserve house of colon soon
Nice but not as interesting as museum de las casas reales
Amazingly preserved. Nice place to visit but take care it’s hot in here!
This is a gem. It really is stunning and has a fascinating history.
Interesting history about Diego (Christopher Columbus neitherand his wife, Maria Colon.
The place is well preserve with lots of history. Very detailed information from the old days of the Spanish high class. The audio gadget is a great help and nice way to get know about all things that are shown.
When I went here the museum was closed, but this building is worth seeing. The old school architecture is really cool to see. The plaza that its in has benches that over look the water and a doc with a view of a really cool bridge. If youre in the area you should make time for this. This is also the building on the back off the 1000 bill.
We had a guided tour. It was facinating to learn about the history of these Spanish upper.class that came to live in Santo Domingo. Much of the furniture and decorations are original, even if the actual structure is not. Most notable was that Christopher Columbus son and his wife were the ones to occupy the palace. Really, quite exceptional to see
Great history lesson. Wish they would talk more about the consequences of these explorers being here and the murder of the indigenous people .. but definitely pretty to look at. Theres certain times of the day you can go in..
History!!! Its was great to know a little bit of it.
Really well done and the audio guide is excellent. The staff are so kind and helpful. Really cheerful and cordial. The items are well preserved. I only wish the museum was air conditioned because it is a very humid and sweaty situation.
Truly worth the visit, you can spend 15 to 45 minutes there and learn a great deal about the history of how Cristobal lived when he arrived in Santo Domingo!
Nice place with a lot of history and nice view
The house of Christopher Columbuss son, Diego, and his wife is filled with history and some original (but most notartifacts like clothing, armor, furniture and instruments. The tickets are about $2 each and include audio tours in most languages. Local guides can be hired at the entrance also.
Nice museum, but I expected it to be bigger. It will take 40 minutes max
Diego Colón (Christopher Columbus sons housea great spot to visit for a quick tour. We visited as part of a tour of Santo Domingo so were slightly rushed
