This is a good and interesting museum but certainly helps if you understand a little about the subject. Nonetheless, it is free (small donation encouraged and worth the time to visit.
The museum gives you a real insight into the history of Broken Hill and the minerals and rocks found in the area. The staff are amazing and had no hesitations answering my teenage boys questions! Thank you
I came here on the Monday and was greeted by John who was doing a deep clean of the premises. After a healthy discussion I chose to stay in broken hill for another night just to see the place and boy let me tell you, I was not dissapointed. If youre into geology I would highly recommend this place if broken hill falls on your trail. John is a lovely guide and had a good knowledge of the Broken Hill history. Thanks John!
This place was free so hard not to be good value! (You can donate $5 if you like). The guy at the front was so friendly and nice, with lots of helpful info about Broken Hill. Was cool to see a lot of the minerals and the video on the history of the area as well. Gift shop had some nice things for sale and I got a fossil necklace.
I can see u all now as I have been your shirt programm . Now u will be held accountable . Cause u cant hide anymore .
Showcases a magnificent range of local minerals. The establishment is run by council and is full of history and information on the towns minerals and mining. Examples of the minerals are displayed with timeline stories. I loved it.
Definitely worth a visit. Closing hours are now at 3pm.
This is what Broken Hill is all about an informative well laid out display of its mineral wealth and history a must visit entry is free so buy something or donate
Amazing. A real education for the family about the evolution of rocks and minerals in the particular context of Broken Hill.
If you love minerals and anything to do will Geology, there are some amazing samples to see.
Professionally prepared and presented mineral specimens, informative displays and videos, friendly and knowledgeable staff. There are boulder size specimens in the backyard and pebbles I looked at by microscope.A must have for anyone even remotely interested in geology, science, minerals and crystals or mining.
Very good geological video explaining the origins of yhe Line of Lode.
The most beautiful display ever! Staff are so lovely and extremely helpful - would highly recommend and love to come back
Very interesting. Geological, and industrial, history explained. Good range of local mineral exhibits.
Absolutely loved it! Great displays, video, information... could have spent a lot longer in there than I did. Highly recommend a visit.
Great little museum for anyone interested in rocks and minerals. Or just likes looking at pretty shiny things. Allow 1 hour to see and read everything.
An incredible place to visit in order to gain a full and enjoyable insight and understanding of the history and minerals of the Broken Hill region and city.
Very interesting to see how the Broken Hill mine all started, nice range of local minerals and theatrette. Entry is a $5 donation for a family, they dont accept cash at the moment. Well worth a look.
I learnt so much just from one visit and totally enjoyed myself. The Claude Marquette exhibition gave a great insight not only to the challenges of mining, but the history of Broken Hill and tied in beautifully. The gentleman who was working on the day we attended was a bit of a Gem himself! We were waiting at the door as he opened up for the day and his enthusiasm was infections. He was a wealth of knowledge and took the time to answer the questions we had not just about the Museum, but Broken Hill and the best places to visit. A complete advocate for the town!
Beautiful mineral collection and excellent short video on the formation of the Broken Hill orebody. Nice layout and presentation.
Interesting place, informative staff, loved learning about the minerals and rocks discovered and mined around our local.A microscope so you can look at them in detail. A little gift shop aswell to purchase some very reasonable priced rocks to take home.Donation as the entry fee.I love crystals 😉Just a couple of photos I thought Id share.
Definitely worth the visit! The staff were knowledgeable and very helpful, and the displays were well presented and fascinating.
Our family really enjoyed the Minerals Museaum Geo Centre in Broken Hill.John provided us with great service beyond expectations and gave us some insider information on the exhibits as well as great tips on other local attractions and walks - his passion for Broken Hill was clearly evident. Well done to John and staff from the Thomas family
The Geo Centre was great. I am a stone/rock freak so I found it very interesting. Staff were very helpful & informative
This excellent for kids, very educational, hands on.... Ryan is very helpful and very informative.... He needs a pay rise...lol. Best attraction in Broken Hill.
A great museum for those that want to understand the geology and minerals behind Broken Hill.
Great little museum that takes you through the formation of rocks and gems, starting at the Big Bang. Lots of history surrounding the mining industry in Broken Hill. The tour finishes with the famous Silver Tree and a bit of history surrounding it. Entry is by donation and the tour should take less than an hour. Great little gift shop. Huge thanks to Ryan for being so helpful with our little girl, showing her all the rocks and gems.
Good little museum, the rock and mineral collection was quite impressive, especially the 42 kg silver nugget.
Fascinating place to visit. The highlight is The Silver Tree,, but the history of Broken Hill is a story explained in a scientific & informative way. Do not miss.
The lady in the counter is very helpful and love her job. The museum has a huge variety of minerals, there is a 15 min movie explaining how the minerals and crystal formed inside the earth in a very easy way. Worth a visit
A must visit when in Boken hill. Given the historical significance of minerals to existence of the town, a background is important. The museum is well thoughtout and interesting with wonderful exhibits. The staff are extremely helpful and friendly. Thoroughly recommended.
What a peculiar little museum. It is worth a visit, there is a lot of information to take in for a layperson. It would be great for someone interested in mineralogy, geology etc. Theres a good explanation of Broken Hills street names.
Visited broken hill for the day, really cool displays. Really helpful and lovely people, showed us places to stay and gave information on the geodes etc
I brought my 2 children in last Wednesday, and it was really interesting. Lots to see and very educational. The gentleman at the desk was incredibly knowledgeable and helpful and took lots of time talking to my son and giving him ideas and print outs on how to make one of the minerals. He also pointed out some places to go where you could find some of these rocks/ minerals. We went to one of these old mines and the kids spent ages finding different items of interest. My son really wanted to go back to the museum and show the gentleman his findings to find out what they were, but we ran out of time. 5/5 stars. Thank you so much!!
Very good displays and info about broken hill minerals. Great old building renovation. Loved video of broken hill mineral street names and location.
Lots of mineral samples and information about geological history of the area. I found it fascinating but a lot of it went over my head.
if you are interested in minerals ot teaching a class this place is really interesting with large and diverse collection and some very impessive specimens. or me Personally i only was attracted to the pretty colourful, shiny or glowing ones and the sculpture silver tree.
This was well worth the entry fee and, for us, was one of the highlights. There are many places to see but this one is highly recommended. The video of the local geology was informative and really showed the uniqueness of Broken Hill. There was enough there for all the family.
Well worth the entry fee. It doesn’t look like much from the outside, but once you step in the door you realise you’ve found a gem (pun intended). Not so suitable for very small children but anyone aged 10+ should enjoy themselves. You don’t need to have an interest in minerals/mining, it’s interesting regardless. Allow about 45 minutes for a full walkthrough. There’s some gems and such available in the gift shop.
Nicely laid out and informative video of the formation of broken hill.
If you want to see some of the largest and most spectacular mineral specimens in the world, this is a must. Very well set out. Should be more visibly advertised. Seniors concessions.
The Geo centre as its locally known covers the different minerals and genealogical finds that are apart of the Line of Lode. There are some great audio visual presentations, many mineral displays and lots of read. Its a must visit for those who love geology and enjoy gemstones and mineral collections.
Do not judge this place on how it looks from the outside, inside there is a treasure. As you enter they play a very informative short film on how the minerals and gems came to Broken Hill. Then as you go further in the museum there is a gallery of old photos that show what life was like in Broken Hill. Then come the real gems, wonderful and amazing rocks that are sure to dazzle even if you have no interest in rocks. Then the Broken Hill silver tree comes which is also a very amazing and a detailed exhibit.
I have been a gemstone collector since I was a child and I was hoping for more from this museum but that said it was true to "Local" museum standing. It was about Broken Hill and what was found there and it covered that pretty well.
Educational, staff were brilliant, great video, well designed displays. Suggestion, a bit more hands on stuff for the kids.
