Alawa Fish & Chips (Take Away & Restaurant) - Fish & chips shop in Darwin, Australia
Bit disappointedEnded up throwing most of the fish away due to it being chewy and not eatable 😑Definitely not fresh fish 🐠The gravy was nice though
Tasty, loved the different take on the batter. Not just the usual super greasy thick batter. Generous amount of tasty fries too.
Avoid - got a chicken nugget in a seafood basket
food was nice but the girl serving just didnt want to be there, had trouble understanding english
Worst fish and chips we have ever had , who in hell puts herbs in fish batter ? What are they thinking . The flake was like rubber . $25 bucks chucked the whole lot in the bin.
THE worst fish and chips Ive had in Darwin the so called Jewfish tasted purely like the under cooked batter, order a crab stick and get a crumbed prawn. The only saving grace would have been the potato cakes until my daughter bit into a raw potato with well cooked batter. Over $70 for a meal for 4 people is NOT OK.
Very nice fish and chips. They make their own batter and fish tastes fresh.
Love the fish and chips here great value for money I recommend Alawa fish and chips.
Great price fish and chips. Friendly service. Will be back. We had the snapper.
Hands down the worst fish and chips I’ve had. Fish was so hard you could throw it in lava, pull it out and it would still be the same. Wouldn’t recommend to my worst enemy.
Only rating 1 star because I can’t rate 0. Took 30mins when we were the only people in the shop. Chips are ok, onion rings are bad, the ‘flake’ I wouldn’t even feed to my dog. Hard as a rock! Will never go back there
Cmon now!- the fish and the batter taste like cough medicine mixed with herb (gunja)please remove the herb from the batter. try to force myself to eat it as i was starving and all i could feel was the texture of the batter in the back of my throat.people do not order fish from here unless you wanna choke.... n die
We think this place is great, the service was great. They were really friendly and there was no wait. I pretty much had 3 people serving me. The pineapple fritter were delicious too.
Unfortunately we had a bad experience here last week, the chips were good but 2 out of 3 pieces of fish we couldn’t even get a fork into, they were like battered house bricks and had to throw it all away. Disappointed with the meal overall, sorry.
Probably my favourite Fish & Chips in Darwin I dont come here very often but everytime I get food here its good real goodBattered Salmon and Potato Cakes yum 😋The place is run by Indians so you can also get Currys etcBut Ill stick to Fish & Chips
Great value for money, usually good quality. Can be a little hit and miss though. Service is quick, never had too wait too long for food. Friendly staff.
The batter is gross. It tastes like there is cinnamon in it that goes all the way through the fish. The battered prawns were tiny compared to others I have brought elsewhere for the same price. On the up side my daughter liked her pineapple fritters. Sorry but won’t be back and won’t recommend
Best batter! Pleasantly surprised to find this great place, the batter isn’t your usual fish and chip shop fare. Really added flavour to already delicious food. Absolutely recommend
Did fish & chips. Place is Indian, I didnt realise until I was ordering but didnt know that would affect the taste of what I received. Thought I was getting good ole fishn chips. I think they used an additional ingredient in the batter that wasnt to my liking; otherwise there was nothing wrong with their food, it just wasnt to my liking. Other than that the shop was clean, the service was prompt and courteous and the price was reasonable.
Had ordered 2x snapper and $6.00 for chips. Absolutely delicious. Serving was to much for two people.
It is a fish and chip shop, so it does what you expect. It was cooked fine and not toooo oily. The fish didnt taste very fresh at all, a bit aged lets say. Room for some improvement but it gets the job done on fish and chip night. They should add some vegetable dishes from India to spice things up a little.
Fish used to be good , but now very poor quality fish. Cheap cuts , using the black flesh, very oily and bad flavor
Horrible. The photo says it all. The photo is of their ‘potato cakes’. Inedible. The batter on the fish was chewy, spongy and ruined the piece of fish. The chips looked like they were going to be crispy and tasty but unfortunately they were soggy.
Do you like to get lied to?When youre hungry do you like to wait over an hour for simple fish and chips?Do you like recieveing your food and finding out multiple items are missing?Do you like when a 10 min wait turns into over an hour? Then this is the place for you. Not only do you get to play the ever so fun waiting game while you wait an extended period of time but you also get to play the "Figure out what he is saying" game. Which is very exciting watching people come in and try this game, it seems very difficult and No-one was very good at it. Finally at the end you get to play spot the difference between your docket and prepared meal. We spotted 4 differences!!!So if you interested in making it as difficult as possible to try and get food to eat this is the place for you.Difficulty level 4/5Thanks Sambo.
Okay $11 for serve of (cheapfish and reasonable size chips excellent value. Compared to say (Wulagi Fish & Chipsits hands down better quality food and tastes superior. And the dude(ette)s have pleasant manner & great customer service; cheaper price for better product. And more pleasant disposition. What more could the deep-fried connoseur ask for?
Super tasty fish!!! Super nice owner!!
Delicious fish and crunchy crispy chips and dim sims . The two young people working there today just need to learn to wrap the cooked food a little better as soon as I took it out of the plastic bag it nearly fell out everywhere. Very yummy though we will be back!
I remember when I was a boy mum wouldnt fell like cooking and my brother or myself would have to go to Alawa fish&chip shop and we always enjoyed the fish chips and &patato sclups as we only lived around the corner it wasnt to far away I went back around a mouth ago and the fish&chips were as good as i remember as a boy essay access for all and public toilets and parking cheers billy.
I was actually amazed by the fish. Crumbed Barra and flake were fresh and great. Chips well cooked and good serving size. $5 chips is more than enough for 2 people. I was disappointed however that the calamari rings are formed and also the service was a bit gruff. No acknowledgement of your presence until you literally stand in front of them. Will be back.
Very nice fish & chips so crunchy 👍
Best piece of barrumundi I have had for some time. The owner used a batter with a hint of herbs and it was incredible. The home made spring roll was just as good. The service was great.
Called and ordered 2 fish and 5 dollar chips, told it would be 10min. Got there, told it would be 5 more min. Waited, then went to be given wrong order. Turns out they hadnt even started to make it. Walked out
I ordered chicken schnitzel with chips my chicken schnitzel was partly raw my chips wasnt completely cooked usually its crunchy
Your standard fish and chips store. All the usual stuff: fish (battered, crumbed or grilledchips (in any size serving), potato cakes, dim sims, squid rings etc. Until recently they didnt take cards but with new management this has been rectified. In fact the last time I was there they didnt have enough folding money in the till to make change for a 50.
New management, taken over just recently, the gentleman was of Indian persuasion which for a fish n chip shop I was initially pessimistic. But they served up a BIG portion of fish and chips cooked the way you want, crisper or less, chicken salt or not guy behind the counter. Big batter which was light and crisp on the salmon and a huge piece of snapper. They lack a cash register and had some difficulties figuring out cost ( walked over to the board to look at prices), they might struggle if it gets busy. This night they were keen to help did the basics well and we enjoyed our fish n chips.
Good portion sizes and tasty. Reasonable prices. Way better than other fish and chips shop around..highly recommended.
No nonsense fish and chippery. Huge portions like a true fish and chips shop. Fish was tasty and moist and batter is medium thickness which is above average. Cash only, but they said they are getting an EFTPOS machine in a week, so should be better for card payments.
Ignore the ratings, this place is terrible. There must have been a change of hands. The service was cold, the food was expensive -then cold, the shop was dirty, a half hour wait while there was only two other orders being made.I dont think I have given a two star review before let alone a one star, but this joint deserves every piece of it. Good luck to them.
The place aint much to look at but the food was good, I got some Barra which they crumbed fresh and the cup of calamari and chips which was a decent size.. they didnt have a few items on the menu at the time I was there like scollops and wedges but the lady was very friendly explaining this to me.
Came on Sunday morning after 10:30. Open sign was out door was locked. Rang several times. No answer. Another guy turned up on a bike and was upset no one was there. Poor service. Wont be back
We ordered fish, chips, dim sim, seafood stick & pineapple fritter. Chips were ok everything else was rubbish. Not fresh & tasted rubbery. Batter was yuk. Place looks unclean & no eftpos. They microwaved something I think to defrost ? Try somewhere else. Have no idea how this got good ratings.
We were two hungry cyclists having a pretty bad day, but we decided to try our luck with thus fish and chips. Rode 8km from the other side of the city in the worst of the hungers and what we found was the most delicious meal we could have imagine. Real good tasting fish, and more importantly, the most friendly owners of any fish and chips we have been before. Thank you thank you thank you !!!
One of the few f&c shops in Darwin that still has flake (shark flesh- but only when it is available, of course.Good chips, too.Reasonable prices.
Tasty food, authentic place and amazing people with big heart! Recommend!!!
Been Going to Alawa fish & chips for 30 years. Great food, friendly service. Have not found another fish & chips shop as good as Alawa. I moved out of Alawa 13 years ago and still to this day I will drive across Darwin past numerous other fish&chip shops to go to Alawa
Went for fish & chips, but got tempted with a steak burger with the lot. The scotch fillet tender & tasty, generous portion size and friendly service. Ill be back to sample the other wares.
Very impressed with the size and quality of the fish. Me and my girlfriend went to 2 fish and chip shops before Alawa and they didnt have a big enough range, glad we went to Alawa.
Great fish and chips and great value. Love the friendly staff too. Recommended.Forget rip-off places like nightcliff.
By far the best fish and chip shop weve found in Darwin. Fish is cooked well, not oily or dry. Lovely service and reasonable prices. The only place we go to for fish and chips now.
Overall a nice and pleasant fish and ship shop (considering its run by 1 personfrom the pricing to the variety, there is something for everyone. The fish wasnt overcooked, and $20.00 worth of chips was $20.00 worth of chips (not like some other places were there is less). I would recommend this place. Try it yourself and find out!
