Azraq Castle, one of the historical castles in Jordan, dating back to the times of the Romans and the Nabateans, and this castle was built of black volcanic stones and basalt. It is located in the Azraq oasis area. I advise you to visit it.

Probably the only real castle among desert castles :but also the least interesting in my opinion. But a stone door that opens in one of the rooms is impressive.

This is a beautiful old castle made of granite stone from the Ummayad period. It was also once used by TE Lawrence during this time in Arabia when he held meetings with different factions during his time in Jordan. The castle is largely in tact and has not been restored. There are plenty of areas to explore, climb and it was one of the highlights of my trip into the desert exploring old castles. The site has the nickname of the "blue castle" because of the colour of the stones.

Interesting example of a Roman castle that was expanded by successive Arab owners. Used as Arab HQ during WW-I; Prince Faisal had T.E. Lawrence stay in a room here for several days. The castle is constructed out of both local basalt and limestone.

Azraq Palace is one of the historical castles in Jordan. Azraq Palace or Azraq Castle was built of black basalt. Azraq Castle is located in the middle of the Azraq Oasis, a hundred kilometers east of Amman, the Jordanian capital. The castle was built mainly to be a fortress for the Nabateans or the Romans, then the Mamluks rebuilt it again in the thirteenth century AD. Azraq Oasis contains the only permanent source of pure water in the surrounding desert, which is about twelve thousand square miles, and therefore this oasis attracts large numbers of migratory birds on their way to their destinations.

Impressive mid sized castle from the 13th century. Made of granite. There is an old mosque in site, alongside a roman carved mills game, and amazing granite fortress doors.

Popular point on the desert route out of Amman. It was about a 75 minute drive if I recall, via the northern route. There are some mosaics still remaining to look for. Usually pretty deserted so youll have the whole place to yourself. On the way back you can visit cool places like Amra and Al-karranah

Ive seen castles and ruins like this all over the world so you cant help but compare in your own mind. I was talked into sharing a castle tour with a couple of other travelers in my hostel in Amman. Save yourself the money and time as its definitely not worth the investment!

It was an amazing place that our government and Ministry of Tourism do not advertise and take care of this castle as it should. I felt sorry that I havent seen this place in the last few years I lived in Jordan.

A Roman fortress built in the east of Jordan. Was restored and occupied during Umayyad time between 13th - 16th centuries. Its about 110km from the city of Amman, nearby a water source, an old oasis. This castle was, on a later stage and in early 20th century, occupied by the British spy known as Lawrence of Arabia. Entrance fee is 3 JD per person. Nowadays, you can buy the ticket at the first castle in Kharraneh, which gives you the chance to visit the first three castles of Kharraneh, Amra and Azraq.

A big castle with many rooms and buildings, it was possible to hire a guide to explain the structure and give some info but with COVID you would have the castle just for yourself.

A big castle with lots to explore. Parking right next to it in a dirt lot. No one else was visiting so we had the place to ourselves. No signs or information about the place. Lots of steps are very worn and can easily lead to an accident so be careful. Pay the entrance fee in the tiny room to the left of the castle prior to entering.

Built out of local basalt, this castle has a somewhat dark, almost gothic vibe. Worthwhile adding to the itinerary of a desert castle tour.

One of the dessert castles - didnt find it very interesting. You wont need more than half an hour here. Visit only if you have something else planned too for the day. Doesnt seem popular amongst tourists too..Its made up of black stone. No entrance fees. Parking available. Main entrance door too is made up of stone. It was fun to try to open and shut this very heavy doorAll in all, I feel the dessert castles can be dropped from the itinerary.

Medium interest fortress. Many earthquakes have seriously damaged the archeological site. Certainly of importance along the centuries: my attention has been drawn in particular by the entrance door made out of stone...

Lawrence of Arabia is said to have visited and stayed here, there isnt much to really see or do here other than walk the ruins of what was probably a huge castle. The rocks are black like volcanic lava which is usual for the area. The other highlight of this castle is the location; this is the closest you will allowed to get to the Syrian Border, you are approx 25 km from the Iraq, Syria and Saudi Arabia border.

Important ancient castle, 95 km from Amman in north east Jordan, first built by the romans to protect the empire against the Persians, then used by Byzantines, rebuilt by the Muslims, latest use of it through the Arab revolution after the first world war against the Turks. No concrete used, only volcanic stones layed one on the other then plastered. Nice to visit

I have only seen this place from the road driving by. Ive never had the opportunity to stop and get a tour from the local guide that will show you around for a few Jordanian Dinars. Even so as you can see from the pics it is a very ancient castle ruin and would be very interesting to walk through.

I didnt find this as interesting as some of the other castles I visited in Jordan. Its largely open and enjoy in the middle with some tumbledown walls around the outside. The black basalt walls set it or as being different and the connection with Lawrence of Arabia is interesting but that was about it for me. Guides are available.
