Congratulations for this cozy location in the center of Akureyri, where to drink good beer and to meet amazing people from all over the world. The friendly staff is all the more reason to visit Akureyri Backpackers. I visit this hostel a few days ago and Ill plan to return there as soon as possible! ❤️
I stayed here with a group of 18 people, excellent hostel and service. Recommended!
It is unspeakable that a hostel does not have toilets with toilet paper. They steal the money.
I did not stay at the hostel, as we were camping in a van but the service and atmosphere were great in the restaurant and when I and my partner wanted to use their laundromat (900 ISK for washing and drying). The atmosphere is very relaxed and the workers here are knowledgeable and friendly. The hostel is in a great part of town with other amenities close by. Would highly recommend and could see myself staying here.
+ cool designed hostel+ friendly crew+ nice facilities (sauna, shower)+ good wifi+ price is okay- little kitchen area/ quite crowded- - - very thin mattresses/ very uncomfortable to lie -> big minus point
Very good place to stay, to meet cool people, have some drinks…Melchoir and Pia were very nice and helpful with my bike. Highly recommended.
Lovely Place, great deals and the quality of the food is High, more than I expected for an hostel.Very warm and kind peoples, good wifi for sure is a great option to save few Money and enjoy a good local beer. You order at the bar and they serve you at the table.
Was a great experience Id go again anytime
Great stay for a good price. The staff was very friendly and the room and facilities were clean. The only downside was the bed for me. I was in a room with bunk beds and when the person under me moved, the whole bed moved.
Ridiculous price for a hostel (53 EUR per bed per night), too many rules to follow (we are here on vacations not in the army).
Can beat it on price or location. Food is good and beer too. Central to everything with friendly helpful staff.
Service 5/5 - Very friendly young lady (unfortunately did not get her name). Provided excellent menu suggestions.Food 5/5 Salmon dish was amazing. Tasty and very nicely presented.Ambience 5/5 Casul, very welcoming, excellent vibe.Value 5/5
Very well priced hostel on the ring road. Really friendly and helpful service even when we had some issues with our access card. Our private room was bright and spacious - the only downside were the tiny pillows and some noise from outside overnight. Would certainly recommend a stay here.
We didnt stay here but we popped in for a drink, really lovely vibe. Good selection of drinks.
Very nice burgers but very low quality of ribs. I dont know what to think about this place.
Comfortable bar in town. Meeting place for Artic Heliski. They do have 0% beer if you like.
Good ambience if you are looking for a place to chill with some beer, and staff are helpful. I ordered Backpacker Burger and Salmon Ceasar Salad. The price is fair and reasonable.
Came here to eat dinner - food was reasonably priced and delicious. Staff was friendly and responsive. Wonderful experience. Would recommend 100%.
The Salmon (today’s specialwas perfect! Fresh and tasty! The spare ribs were also great! Best value for money so far in Iceland!
Excellent service, great food, cheaper Happy Hour beers, and centrally located. Be advised that there will be street noise beneath you until at least midnight/0100 mostly on Fridays and Saturdays. The showers are in the basement. They have great water pressure and can get hot! If you shower in the morning you will encounter no one. I’ve read other reviews about walking through people to get to the showers. This simply isn’t the case. The seating areas are plenty away from the guest common areas/showers. Yes it is a climb up and down four flights of stairs…deal with it. The mattresses are on the thinner size, like a futon, so completely subjective on comfort. I found it not a problem. You are central to everything: minutes walk to whale watching and 99% of the cafes/bars/restaurants. If you enjoy art museums, please visit the Akureyri Art Museum. You walk out of AB and turn left then right at the bookstore in the corner and the museum is just past restaurant Rub23 on the right side of the street. I will certainly return the next time I’m in Akureyri!
People working there are not honest, they say they leave the keys if you arrive after the check in time but they don’t, so you are in the reception with no where to go at 1am. I am super disappointed by the lack of honesty and professionalism. For an hostel it’s really a pity. I won’t go back. On top of that the emergency number is completely useless and barely picks up.We had to pay 200€ for another night somewhere else at 1am as they let us in with a code but didn’t gave us any key and when I called the guy didn’t know which room we were meant to be sleeping in. Run away from this place!
Called to see if one specific game was displayed there. Got a yes. When I arrive, the game is not displayed but some other game on two screens (same game on both screens). When I asked if they could put the game I wanted to see on one of the screens they said no. They didnt know how. So I came there, bought a beer, because I was gonna watch a football game that was said to be displayed there, but no... Then I asked one of the staff to find some one who could maybe put the game on one of the screens, he totally ignored it and did everything else other than that. It wasnt untill another staff member came behind the bar and my girlfriend asked him that the other one remembered.
I cant vouch for the accomodations, but I can for the bar in the lobby of the hostel. I came here twice during my stay in Akureyri, once during the evening and once mid-day to enjoy some laid back drinks. Place definitely has a relaxed vibe and gets a good cross-section of people drinking across all age groups. Even if you arent staying here, definitely recommend it for a drink if you are looking for friendly folks!
Great place and food. :We came here on our backpacking adventure around Iceland and it was amazing. Kitchen opened at 11:30 on Friday. We got two lunch offers - Obelisk and Veggie brunch and it was super tasty and big portion. Prices are quite low for Iceland actually. Coffee or orange juice was included, which is very nice. Later we had Tacos and Greek salad (also quite large plate). Tables and interior are very cosy, feels like a mountain hut. Free wi-fi. Lovely experience overall! 🤗
Weve only been to the restaurant and it was great. Food was very good, the Greek salad was excellent (with a real dressing!). Staff is very friendly, everything is very uncomplicated! We even managed to catch the happy hour :-)
Amazing food! Came here for lunch and had the menu of the day and it was amazing. A delicious cooked salmon with a salad and fries and a delicious cheese sauce! Highly recommended
Nice and cozy bar with a decent selection of beer. Happy hour was listed from 4pm till 7pm. Will go back and try the food for 2nd review.
One of the few spots for dinner and a couple drinks in Akureyri. Really nice burgers and happy hour made the drinks a decent price. TV was showing Premier League football and there was a good crowd. Shame about the lack of local beer.
It wasnt all bad but it wasnt the best either I mean just walking to the bathroom shock the hole floor but assuming you get the luxury suite and you dont indent to relax at the apartment you should have an overall good experience. But they did find and bring me my coat so all and all great place great people great service.
The bar is great for food and drinks but rather disappointed in the accommodation itself. Since its for backpackers, theres no duvet provided which is probably mentioned soonwhere but that seems like such a basic thing that no one really bothered looking into. Also would be nicer to have showers on each floor and a lift. There are much nicer places in Akureyri which cost similar.
Quirky, fun and bustling hostel in the heart of Akureyri. I was only here for one night and I was sad to leave! Super clean, cozy rooms and friendly staff. The common spaces were fun and trendy and there was a coffee shop/cafe in house. The shared hostel kitchen was small but well equipped. I would stay here again in a heart beat. Icelandic hospitality at its best!
Great location and delicious food! We stopped in on our way through Akureyri for dinner. Atmosphere was great as well as the service. Portions were a bit small for the price - hence 4 stars. Pricing is reasonable for dinner, but still small portions.
Great quality/price ratio. Really cheap for Icelandic standards (you even get a free beer as a welcome gift). Clean bathrooms and showers. Neat, clean and lovely rooms. Cosy bar at the entrance. Great vibe overall!
The beers are great and they have the lowest prices of all bars in Akureyri. The burger is also quite good, especially for the low price! The atmosphere is very chill and cozy. It is a perfect place to meet others. The staff is also very friendly and most of the time even happy :D
Affordable. Friendly staff. Laundry machine available on site (dryer takes a couple rounds). Room was very nice, super clean, and cozy! Perfect location in the heart of the small downtown. Sauna in the shower area downstairs! Just a hop, skip, and a jump to the local swimming pool & geothermal baths. Kitchen was very well outfitted for cooking! No parking available on the street but in the parking lot on the other side of the block. Highly recommended.
Really good hostel. The kitchen and eating area, however, are a bit small. If you go there during summer it might get really crowded. Also, its a bar/restaurant. I could hear the music from my room (only silence from 23 to 7am I would say). Didnt bother me but if you have problems sleeping you can have a hard time!Everything else was great. Good location too, close to the harbour and church. And they give you a free tea/coffea/beer, too!
Wonderful hostel--I loved how welcoming it was and how friendly the staff was. The downstairs bar and restaurant and sitting area is a wonderful hangout and really cozy. My room was clean and secure (the lockers are not so big but I didnt need mineand the bathrooms were clean. The shower was nice and warm with good water pressure. I loved my stay here!
Delicious and friendly staff. Beer was at a reasonable price especially during happy hour. Good luck getting a seat during that time though. Food was moderately priced, but quite tasty. Tons of vegan options too!
Nice hamburgers and good beers, the staff is also really nice. The place is really crowded (and noisyyou might book or come early. There is an happy hour until 7:00pm that makes 50% discount on beers and wine glasses. Really cheap!
I only got dinner with my friends while visiting the city, but we all agree it was the best burger weve ever had. They were very nice, and the food was quick. It was also one of the more affordable places to eat out.
Nice hostel with clean rooms. There is a bar/restaurant on the ground floor which is great for hanging out and a sauna in the basement. The duvet wasnt included in our reservation, I dont know if that is a standard policy but on the other hand, I can say that you dont really need it since the hostel is warm enough. When you check in they give you a free beer and this is cool. The only downside I can find are the showers too far from the rooms. The kitchen is nice and big.
Really enjoyed our stay here. Staff was friendly, rooms were clean and facilities were of high quality. Hostel done correctly. The bar downstairs is a nice plus that serves an okay breakfast. Location is also super. There might be some noice from the streets during weekends.
Great place to stay friendly service. The restaurant is really good. At 2 oclock in the morning on a weekend theres a lot of noise from the street but the rooms are clean period the kitchen is a little small but still manageable. One huge plus is the sauna. They also give you a free beer coffee or tea. I would stay here again. Great location centrally located all the Hopping places are near by
My boyfriend and I went here for dinner twice. I had the vegan burgers which were both pretty good. They also have a selection of beers and a limited bar. The atmosphere is cozy and casual. We enjoyed our visits here.
Great value and nice, clean rooms. The bar/restaurant is great for hanging out. The only downside is hostel guests cannot have their own food and/or drinks in the restaurant area. Instead you have to be confined to a small table in the guest kitchen (even if you order food from the restaurant but have your own beverages).
We loved our stay at Akureyri Backpackers. It seemed to be the busiest place in town while we were there. Live music on Thursday and Friday night, a lively bar filled with locals and travels with a nice selection of local beers. Will definitely be back!
I had a lovely 2-night stay in a couple room with a beautiful view of the fjord. The kitchen was quite clean and there were sufficient amenities provided. The hostel ground floor had a restaurant with really yummy and reasonably priced food. Also, the hostel lounge had board games that were free to just play if say you got bored since all the stores closed at European timings!
Didnt actually stay at the hostel I was there for the drinks. The pub down stairs was really nice , they played sports on the big screen and later on there was a live show. Beers are fairly priced for Iceland and the food is pretty decent as well .
Wonderful staff. So nice. Beds were very comfortable. Lock boxes were a bit small, but still nice. Showers were my least favorite part, I felt a little unsafe in such a public space. Bar is wonderful, the people and energy is very positive. The rooms are clean. You also have to buy the linen, which I understand but it just kind of bummed me out. But overall, really wonderful stay and would stay agin!
We had a great experience at Akureyri Backpackers. Rooms and facilities are clean and comfortable. Kitchen can be a little crowded but functional. Showers were great. Location couldnt be better! The best part of this hostel, however, is the staff. Our car battery died during our stay, and a staff member went above and beyond to help us. She called a couple of different mechanics for us until she found one that could help us quickly and at a fair price. We are so thankful for her help! The only bad part of our stay was a couple of obnoxious guests in our room at 3 am - but that is just a hazard of staying at a hostel during the weekend.
