Akatarawa Forest - National forest in Upper Hutt, New Zealand
Great ride through the forest. Down the Rock Garden and up the Devils Staircase and back to the Mungatuks. A great day out.Another fun day in the forest. Pity about the mess left by the loggers.
Greatest place to go to for adventurous purposes :)
What a nice spot to gobride your quad or 2 wheeler. Just dont foget to get your permit on line.
Well... its a national park ... plenty of trees and walks and areas to enjoy nature
One of the best green areas in the Wellington area. Makes it a good choice during the weekend.
So many amazing trails and 4WD tracks to run, bike, hike or drive on. You can even take the dog on most of them! Watch out for unexpected steep hills, river crossings, and dirt bikes speeding around corners.
Tonnes of mountain biking and exploration to be had. If that is not your thing there are also walks, well maintained tracks and picnic areas.
Commune with nature and get away from the hussle and bussle of city life. Only a short drive from Upper Hutt central the forest area offers opportunities for walking, tramping, biking and hunting. Great walks over hills and down dales, thrpugh a combination on native bush and pine plantations. Waterfalls, streams, bridges and even a dam are just some of the sights. The views from the top of the ridgelines are well worth the climb. Go for an adventure and check this paradise out for yourselves.
This area is a typical New Zealand country scene and offers a number of nice outdoor dining of facilities and tracks
really great place to go to for some relaxing and enjoy nature. Did notice there was some bits of rubbish somebody left behind... lets all Kiwis and visitors to our outdoors look after it and take away any rubbish we bring... 👍🏻😉😁
Favourite childhood walk, the dam itself is not as cool as it used to be though
Nice place for a relaxing time. Bit of dodgy drive in places though. But thats just most of NZ rural roads.
Had a good trail ride out here with kmmc. Awesome day
Great recreational area for all sorts of activities like mountain biking, tramping horse riding, even off-roading. Can get a little disorientating, but good fun. Be prepared to cross rivers.
Great spot to adventure regardless of if youre on feet, mountain bike, motor cross or 4wd. Loads of varying tracks and quite sheltered in bad weather. Rivers are generally fine to drink from but may want to use purification to be sure.
Got slightly lost and did a loop on the tops, absolutely stunning and we found a whole bunch of beehives which was just a spectacular treat! It can be quite steep but the tracks are well formed.
Beautiful road to drive on, but scary as its a good tar road, but only for a single car really. Being a 50 zone is scary af as the cars go both ways. Very few bits where 50 is even possible safely.
Beautiful place for 4x4 can drive all the way to a hut
Amazing restaurants and shopping, wifi a bit sketchy but plenty of options in the food court
Beautiful spot can camp feed apply. Toilets bbqs swimming walking tracks it has it all. Rubbish collection
Amazing view from the top. Enjoyed the ride on the bike. Totally recommended on a clear day.
Was a great mountain bike ride entering from the SH and following up to some old forestry roads. Nice views, would be great to take a dog for a run. However coming down the other side I hit a locked gate saying keep out. Didnt see any signage before that indicating that no entry so not sure what the go was there.
Beautiful must see..lovely landscape n beautiful trees .I will happily recommend.
As much fun as you can have with your clothes on!!
Awesome place for a walk when its hot and sunny! Go give it a whirl and get that heart pumping.
If you are into epic mountain bike rides, this is one of the best and so close to the city.
Beautiful place. No toilets in car park. Several bikes motorbikes and quads on trail but all very considerate. Great views of the gorge and clear deep pools in the river
We were up Pats 4x4ing
Great bit of bush.
Beautiful walking tracks with lovely rivers and pools towards the very north. We did the walk in April and the track was mostly in the shade so we were never too hot.
Cold wet and quietly. Apart from the guys running round with their airsoft guns. Looked like fun! Lol
Awesome tracks, would roll again.
Very cool place been there many many times have walked as far as I know all tracks and love the place, does rain a lot tho but magic
great walk. begin with skinny road and bit of uphill climb. then the rest walk is kind of easy. The view from the top is awesome. you can see almost half Hutt Valley from there.we really enjoyed this 2.5 to 3 hours but not too difficult walk.
This is a good long walk with a steady uphill climb. Fairly good views. The down side is that the main path is shared with motorised vehicles that keep passing by and tend to splatter you with mud. Keep your dogs and kids close so they dont get run over. No toilets or rubbish bins. Take water to drink. Towards the top there is a foot path for hikers only.
Well worth the walk
Great drive through awesome forest by very skinny road. I would not recommend a caravan or big trailer through there!
Fantastic walk at karapoti great for Kids and dogs
Lots to explore. Plenty of good walking and riding to be done here but do plan according to your stay - the weather can turn quickly so be sure to let people know where you are going before you leave
Great fun exploring the logging truck tracks and catching the views
Good easy bush walk to the birch valentine dam no spillover today water level behind the dam is low.
Great location for day hikes. Very clean and amazing scenery
Best asset in the region with public access, especially for trials riders, big thanks to WRC for providing and maintaining this for us all.
Lots of areas to go into Akatarawa forest for walks or bike rides. Well known for the Karapoti bike track.
Beautiful peaceful place to take the Family for a walk, BBQ , good kids playground and Sumner pool for Toddlers.
Great walking options close to civilisation. Relatively low numbers of other folks around so you should be able to enjoy the nature in peace.
Uphill walk to Canons Point Trig. Quite steep, but a good workout. Great views of Upper Hutt in clear weather.
It is the great outdoors, always five stars. This was a visit of hut bagging the Orange Hut number three. Very well done, thanks to all the off road clubs that built this structure.
The classic Karapoti MTB race course. And the best hidden jungle singletrack in the Wellington region
Great for family picnics. Some good walking trails too.
