Completed in 2010, this 49-m. bronze statue depicts a woman, man & child looking out to the sea.
African Renaissance Monument in Ziguinchor
Description
We are Africa and one the good things being African is the never dying spirit...
Very impressive and worth the visit. Best to go with a guide to give the history behind it.
MoreI don’t know if this is the biggest statue I’ve ever seen, but it must sure come close. While I travelled to different parts of Sengal I met a few people and we exchanged numbers and this statue was their profile picture, so I’m assuming from that it’s a point of pride for many. It’s pretty stunning, real capturing of strength and resilience. love the child being the goal of it all, it’s the child’s future that will bring improvement with supporting parents. The trek up is only difficult because of the heat, in fact some people were training on the steps on the way up.Somewhat obviously, since you have to look up, the glare of the sun hides all the definition so find a place in the shade to look up from, far more detailed that way.I rarely think things are a must see, but this gave me a lot of hope, could tell you why, but it just did. Beautiful.
MoreFree entrance to visit the monument at any time of the day. Entrance fee only to visit the museum inside the monument and to go up in the lift for a 360° view of Dakar from above. You have to be brave enough to climb the many steps to get to the bottom of the monument. Otherwise, it is possible to access it from a paved road on the side / back of the monument with a car/taxi (if you have reduced mobility or dont have the courage to...).
MoreThere are not too many attractions in Dakar, so if you are there you should visit this monument. But if you have more time I would suggest going to Gorée island, thats the best place in Dakar.
MoreAmazing. The monument itself is huge and imposing. The architect Pierre Goudiaby is a genius. Inside the monument itself there is prestigious exposition.
MoreA fascinating place to experience. Your elevator ride takes you 15 floors above the base into the head of the man where there is an observation deck providing views of Dakar and the peninsula. Ngor island Goree island and others easily seen from the platform. Unfortunately you are no longer able to see the lighthouse on the hill across because of a large high-rise building obstructing the views. Our multi-lingual tour guide was exceptionally helpful and kind to our group, customizing our experience for multiple languages. (Spanish and English in our case). This is one of the few places out side of NKorea to be able to see a sculpture built by Mansooday. The stairs in front are quite steep. Take your time. You can also walk down the road on the back side of the hill.
MoreA must see!!! Absolutely 💯 one of the most beautiful statues in the world. It should be considered another world wonder. From the details of the statue, the location, the food and activities. Its very much worth the trip. Very emotional, compelling, and spiritual vist.
MoreA really astonishing monument. One of the biggest in Africa. You ca go to the top via an elevator. It is a place any tourist should visit whenever theyre in Dakar. I recommend 💯.
MoreIts a good place to visit.
One of the tourist attractions of Dakar City. The monument is a 49 mtr tall bronze statue situated on a hill. You may go to the top of the monument by booking the ticket in advance.
MoreWhat a great experience... from the "Welcome Home" to the beautiful wears at the vendors, to the food, to the interior of the monument....Visiting Senegal is something I would suggest to all people, but especially brown people. After being told for hundreds of years that you and your history is inferior, it is refreshing to see that its all a deception.
MoreGood place to spend evening in Dakar
This monument is said to be the tallest sculpture in the whole of Africa, standing at 49meters and stationed on a 100meter hill. Normally its usually crowded but on this day it was very scanty, so it was easy to move around.Climbing up all the stairs to the base of the statue could be scary at first, but it gets easier as you ascend. There are country flags on the edge of the steps, and the view from the top is so breathtaking.
MoreLots of stairs but has a great view at night
It’s gorgeous, captivating, and informative. The only suggestion I have is to have the the writings in the gallery in English under the French. The Anglophone Africans would appreciate it 😊I highly highly recommend it 🤍✨
MoreTo get to the sight you have to climb about 200 stairs to get to the top . Its free to access this sight from the outside. But for a few you can go in and take an elevator to the top of the mans head and get a 360 degree view of the surrounding area.
MoreLamine was absolutely amazing! He was so knowledgeable, very passionate historian and educator. He was very patient and took his time answering thoroughly. I’ve visited and he was able to accommodate German, French and English translations of the history of the region. He was very clear about his own personal journey and Senegal and was able to give a very critical thought for perspective on culture, politics, globalization and then As well religion and the relationship between humanity and philosophies of economic development. He demonstrated humility, humor, patience, and fortitude with designing our tour schedule to accommodate flexibility And difficulty with my luggage. He made excellent food recommendations, and was also able to take pictures and facilitate taking pictures with the locals. Because he is well known for his good standing in the urban and suburban community, and the tourism sector, it was very easy to be the guests that he was helping and many people bargained with us with even more rigor because of our connection to him. Very much so I appreciate all of the care, the history, the passion, the knowledge that was demonstrated and it really helped us to assimilate into Senegalese culture on a very short trip. I am honored and so is my mother. When he grabbed us from Magic land, and the way that he introduced himself and explained how everything was going to work, I knew from that moment that we were in very good hands and very good company. I cannot wait to come back. Jerejef maitre! On y va a la gare la prochaine
MoreGreat place to visit in Dakar. Costs 6,500cfa for a non-resident, and 3,000 for a resident. Good museum and excellent view from the top.
MoreThe tour guide spoke in both french and English. The monument is big and beautiful. There is nice art inside.
MoreBeautiful place.nice views.
One of the best places to visit whenever you are in Dakar.
I went there on a Sunday with my friend. It was not too crowded. The staff was kind and polite to everyone. They helped to de-escalate a conflict calmly. 👍🏾 For the tour we had 2 options: 1000 XOF for the 3 first floors (exposition); 3000 XOF for the 3 first floors and the highest floor (the top of the statue). We took the full experience and learned a lot about the establishment of the monument. ♥️
MoreThis controversial monument at its foundation is now THE symbol of Dakar, the capitale of Senegal. Better not to miss the visite.
MoreIt was a great visit. The monument has been designed by a senegalese architect and inside the momument, we had the opportunity to see the beauty of the african art. At the 15th floor, you have a nice view of Dakar. It is wonderful
MoreIts ginormous! And be careful when its windy or you will blow off of the top.
Nice place, lot of wind, nice view of Dakar, there is a restaurant and photographers. The place is secured you can access by car or by foot.
MoreWe went to the viewing of the Senegal vs Egypt game. It was a very beautiful experience. There were thousands of people present. My son kept saying he wanted to go to the top, so in the midst of the crowd, we were actually able to make it to the top. I visited the Monument on a normal occasion before to and I encourage every visitor from America to go.
MoreBeautifull view from the top. Story behind the monument is also interesting. Step from bottom od the hill to the top are steep. Bathroom is not working.
MoreIt was a great experience climbing all those steps to the top of the rennassaince monument and seeing how high it was.
MoreExcellent art piece of African Renaissance. See the museum. Must see if you goto Dakar.
MoreThis is one of the biggest Monument in the World 49 feet height made by African President in 2010, This is triumph of African liberation and rival the Statue of Liberty and the Eiffel Tower as a tourist destination.Used very heavy weight Bronze metal for preparation of man 100Ton, Woman 70 Ton and Child 20Ton so it goes very costly to African government and estimated cost would be USD 27 million
MoreTheres no official parking, so We parked on a dirt lot across the street. As We approached the Steps there are Photographers that wear a museum vest, showing You a Printout of Single Picture. I asked the Price, he said 1,000cfa. He began taking several shots moving Us into different poses, taking Us up the stairs and taking more pictures turning this thing into a Photo Shoot. At the Top were Restrooms to the left and to the right was a container turned into a convenience store. I bought a Coca-Cola for 500cfa. We paid 3,000cfa per person, Im guessing because I dressed like I was a National Citizen that day. Lol. The inside of the Monument was very informing especially having an English speaking tour guide. We seen three floors of history. Then returned back down to catch the elevator up to the fifteenth floor into the cap of the Statue. The View was worth being in that small elevator. The Monument represents Family leaving the past behind and seeing the Future. After the tour we went to Cafe at the bottom of the steps, while it was still under construction. We bought a Coca-Cola and Large water for 2,500cfa. The Photographer sits down at the Table and asked Us to receive the 80 pictures through Whats app. He then asked for 40,000cfa, My Wife then negotiated and We settled at 30,000cfa. He then proceeded to ask if We are going to Goree Island so He can take pictures of Us there. Overall is was a Great Experience.
MoreOne of the top places I wanted to go to when I had just landed in Dakar. I surely wasn’t disappointed. The museum is something every visitor should check. And the view at the top of the statue is just amazing 🤩
MoreAmazing experience, good workout, friendly people all around, scenic views are mind blowing. Sitting in the breeze overlooking seas, hills and Dakar city is visible. A must see venue when anybody is in Dakar.
MoreA must see when you visit Senegal. Theres a nice guided tour (in Frenchthat takes you through the displays. Its a nice place to learn about the African nations as many counties are part of the exhibits.
MoreBeautiful statue that is a must see in Senegal. Get the tour to go up and have panoramic views of Dakar.
MoreThis is one of the most amazing monument in West Africa. This family sculptured from natural stone is an amazing example of Artistic talent in Africa. This is one place to visit when you are in Sénégal. The view of Dakar city is just unique from the top of the monument.
MoreThere are a lot of feelings one gets whenever life grants them a sighting of note. Climbing and looking down at Dakar from the top, One cant help but feel a profound sense of pride as an African citizen. One of the greatest monuments in africa.
MoreSeeing it in reality is something else. Ive wanted to visit this monument for a while now its been on my mind since I got in Senegal unfortunately due to covid19 all the public places are closed in Senegal the gard was kind enough to let us click few pictures I will totally come back to have the full experience
MoreBest view of the city, Ouakam spreads beautifully from the top. The lighthouse on the neighboring hill is visible from the top. The museum tour is standard with a multilingual guide and beautiful art exhibitions are shown.
MoreIts a true emblem of Resistance. We enjoyed the monument and the area was well taken care of. If you decide to climb the stairs its 187 to the base of the Statue. You also have an option to go inside and and experience the look out thats windows in his hat.
MoreInteresting historical information about Senegal and other West African countries. Beautiful views of Dakar from within the head of the monument. Costs 2700 XOF for the full tour for non-Senegalese adults.
MoreWhat an Awesome Experience! About 200 steps up (rest stops in between for the wearyand a wonderful view of the top. Look to the future (the Westbut dont forget where you came from (home, the Motherland). A must see in Senegal.
MoreCome to your own decision on the artistic merit and sense of building this monument by visiting it yourself. It can be very windy here, so come prepared. After a guided tour you take the elevator up to the viewing platform. The monument has been here for about eight years now, and the surface is starting to get a little worn. Not sure if the North Korean engineers were prepared for the West African conditions.
MoreWell this is mixed reviews. The place is great. The statue in itself is magestic and they didnt exaggerate when they said it was bigger than the statue of liberty. There are lots of steps so be ready for that. The view even at the base is just breathtaking. You get a great view of Dakar. Now the day we went they had some sort of event for kids with presents and such. So the place was trashed. I mean there was litter on the ground and on top of that, you have carriages with horses so the place reeked of horse dung. Youd think they would force those guys waiting for customer pick up to pick up after their animals. Now the worse part is the treatment at the gate to enter the statue and do the tour to the top.I went to the window to pay for tickets to enter, the lady was no help. She just sat behind her desk with the window close. I asked the question about what to do to get to the top, she didnt even want to answer. Worse she then tries to talk to me thru the closed window and we couldnt even hear each other.I tried opening the window so I could hear her. But it was locked and she didnt really try. I was about to walk back down in defeat when someone waiting told me in fact, they take you in groups. So once a group gets out, they let another one in and thats when the magic window is opened to pay for the ticket. So when the moment came, I purchased the ticket because kids wanted to go to the top. Got the ticket and got taken to a waiting room. I asked the people in there if it was just possible to go up top take a few picture and be on our merry way, but they told me its not possible and that its a tour excursion. And it takes about 20 to 30 minutes.I had left the wife and the baby down at the steps so I decided to just give my tickets away and leave empty handed. The whole thing seemed very amateurish. At least on the outside. Couldnt rate the tour itself. Will come back again later next year and try.So really the statue is a must see but better organisation is a must. Even just signs on the outside explaining how things work so we arent at the mercy of people who dont do the job well. Post it even at the bottom so you dont climb up thousands of stairs just to be stuck behind incompetent people.
MoreWe did the tour up inside the head. Since its a small area inside you only get a couple of minutes to spend inside. There is an elevator to go straight up to the top but the full tour includes exhibits in other levels only accessible by stairs. Total tour was less than an hour.
MoreThis is one of the best place i have ever invisited in Africa. This is place is full of history that is overwhelming in so many aspects. Arts from different African countries are available as well as some of the slavess items. The monument has 4 floor of the exhibition with different histories to each floor. This is very refreshing to visit the monument. You will also get a great view over Dakar from the top. This is one of the places I will recommend to visit for your next trip to Dakar.
MoreAmazing place to visit, great for pbotos, climb 200 steps to the base of statue, wonderfu breeze and l feeling at the top. Even though we didnt go inside, it was still great, nice gift shop also.
MoreIt is worth a visit. Told that North Korea has built it and given to Senegal and found that was very interesting. 360 view of Dakar was awesome!
