Afrasiyab Museum - Museum in Urgut, Uzbekistan
A must visit to understand the ancient history and rich civilization, the display is excellent, there is no brochure in english, its advisable to engage a guide.
Quite a small museumThe 10 minute video is very useful and explains the excavated wall decorationsWouldnt really recommend either this or afrosiab itself as there isnt much to it for the 30,000 SOM per person they charge here
The museum is very interesting to know what was Samarcand before the VIII century. You can understand some details about the actual samarcand and there are many item inside. Unfortunately, the (Uzbekistan widely diffusedrefurbishments limit the quality of the visit. Probably visitors in next months will find a more interesting museum. However, visit this is a well-spent time. Actually (5th august 2022), there is an exhibition on the Silk Road between china and Central Asia, showing even the procedures of the production of the silk
If you are not interested in history youd better not visit this museum. Historical place but not many antiquities
AMAZING
So cool.
It’s a bit sparse, and the staff actually asked for “baksheesh”, which was odd for Uzbekistan (but not Samarkand), to watch the film about the palace mural [don’t pay, just walk away]. That said, it’s worth a visit if you’re in the area of the Islom Karimov mausoleum. It takes a while to drive to the museum due to the street lights and shape of the road, so walking from the mausoleum is probably faster.
I really like this place. Because you know there u can feel like you are in that period its constructed as cave woovvv soo amazing I recommend to those who are interested in history and such kind of historical places
There was museum of lost civilization which was destroyed by Mongols at that time, all city was destroyed by mongol army at that time and remaining was they put water of river to that place.we walk from hazar xizar mosque to museum around 2km from there and visited place.some artifacts are there with some old theme was created inside to demonstrate that cultur of the city.we take a visit from one side to other as have less time.
Very interesings
Unfortunately, the worst managed museum i’ve been to. Valuable ancient artifacts laying around with minimum or zero description, some only in Uzbek or Russian. The place itself is worn down, staff blasting TV shows on their phone while you are trying to read the history of the settlement etc. A lot of room for improvement.
It is a basic, simple small museum. Most of the exhibits are replica. Price is too high, around 2.5$ each person.
frasiab Museum of Samarkand
A good museum to understand the local history
Great little museum
Great place, recommend to visit this museum!
Interesting museum with different topic discovered.
Great
good)
It s small but interesting mueseum, definitively worth to visit. It does not provide much information or historical background though. There it seems as more and more information is getting translated to english and the muesum is still in work, as the excavations are still not finished. Another nice aspect is that you can visist the actual excavation site! I recommend to go there in the morning, as it s getting really hot and there is no shadow at all.
Hidden gem away from the crowds. Small musuem and the possibility to visit the excavation site too!
If you are into archeology and enjoy looking at coins and vases this place might be for you. Unfortunately, almost no context and historical background is given in English. So, for the average traveler this place is not of much interest, in my opinion.
A great introduction to the importance of the silk roadWhen I first saw the mural inside it was hard to follow exactly what story it was telling. However there is a film showing to the right of the mural room. This was outstanding at bringing the mural to life and explaining the meaning. Strongly recommend you view the mural, then watch film, then revisit the mural.Theres also some interesting artifacts in the museum.I didnt have time, but if you have an interest in archaeology, the site is meant to have a lot you can see, away from the main building.
Small but very informative.
Interesting video before walking round the museum, both of which we enjoyed. It would appear the museum is still a work in progress.
Nice museum. Interesting place to see. Samarkand has interesting history.Stories and legends about their kings.Near museum you can find archeological excavations
Good but small
More like a site museum. The signs and explanations in the museum is not so friendly for foreigners. It will need some modificatios.
Worth visiting.
This museum makes you see samarkand is not just the one of registan. This area has seen successive empires and civilisations stretching back 2500 years. This museum tells you the story of that - through artifacts excavated from the area. Catch the short film they play inside the museum before wandering through the exhibits.I realized the museum actually sits on the site of the excavations. Right above the buried remains of the earlier civilizations. So ask for the way to the ruins, which is through a small gate in the back. I wandered into that moonscape and spent a couple of hours wandering through the remains of the past. Nothing spectacular but the vast rugged grounds have tantalising views into the past.
By far the best museum I went to in Uzbekistan - partly because we paid extra for a guided tour offered in the museum (English guideand she was absolutely superb. In addition, the staff are clearly passionate about what they are doing, while the museum is clearly evolving all the time, illustrating the care and interest the curators have as they are keeping the exhibits fresh and up-to-date with the latest theories about this site.A must visit in Samarkand.
Pretty empty museum. Same history as you may see in every same museum in Uzbekistan. Fresco as main attraction are in pretty bad condition (not like at Minos temple, par example). And quality of this painting far from astonishing.Curious skulls i find, but zero explaining about them
Informative video in English explaining the wall paintings which are still in the place they were found. This museum is crucial for understanding Samarqand in the pre-Islamic Sogdian era. Staff were friendly too
Stopped here because I wanted to know something more about Samarkands history. Utterly disappointed: there are really few description accompanying the exhibition and almost none of them os in English. When I left the museum, I knew as much of Samarkands history, as when I walked in.
Impressive site to whom has an interest in ancient history of central asia.
