Afghan Restaurant - Restaurant in Reading, United Kingdom
Im gutted this place is closed right now cos of a fire. It has the most delicious, fresh, flavourful authentic food. Not too spicey or oily like all the other Indian places Ive tried in Reading.
First time visit, have to compliment the restaurant. Very nice seating and variety of food. Ordered the chappali kebab which was great; was highly recommended by a brother which I found very nicely prepared and tasty!
First time at their restaurant and amazing experience. Food was delicious, on time and good quantity but I would say the main thing was the customer services and how the owner Tariq treated us. I don’t write feedbacks but owed him this message to at least thanks for such nice welcome and variety of food. Will definitely go again and contact for home gatherings.
A far cry from the uninspired, bland British fare that’s as common as rain is in this country...What impressed me was the service, you see I wanted a sauce side dish with my kebab and rice, normally if I ask this question anywhere else a disinterested patron answers, “we only have what’s on the menu...” However at Afghan, the lovely afghani server said, “don’t worry brother,” with a big smile and recommended a tomato dish that I couldn’t pronounce. I said thank you and sat down. When my food arrived the server placed a heaping mound of steaming rice with two, big, juicy lamb kebabs and my tomato stew dish on the side. To my surprise the tomato stew had tender, succulent, fall-off-the bone chicken pieces in it, don’t need a knife or a fork, I could just tear prices off with a spoon. OMG I thought, they’re going to charge me an extra £5-10 for this.“The food was worth it though,” I thought and I ate gladly. When I went to counter to pay, the server said, “My brother I charge you £10 okay?” WOW... thank you I said and I’m going to give you a good review! The lamb was £8.50 I believe the tomato chicken stew was on the menu at £15/kg!Amazing service, made me feel at home! Will definitely be back!
It is the kind of a caffe you go just to eat. Service is good, naan and lamb karachi was very good.Floor was very dirty, oily and slippery.
I really enjoyed the food. The food was nice and their services are very friendly . It was amazing experience . Well be back next time. Highly recommended
I wish to thank everyone involved in the preparation and presentation of our meal on Tuesday evening. It was exceptional in every way and added so much to our enjoyment of what was a double birthday celebration. Please pass on my special thanks to all concerned. We will certainly be coming again and we will have no hesitation in recommending you to all our friends
Nice place. Authentic taste
Menu cards look very old and damaged. Place inside is decent, the owner really nice and caring. Food is delicious, they give decent portions.
Ill give 3 stars because. First I give 5 to staff they were very welcoming and kind and humble. Then I deduct 3 make it 2 because of not really tasty food and at the end I will add one more star and make it 3 in total because the food was ready pretty quick.
I went for the Ramadan buffet here one evening. It was absolutely delicious. As a white non-muslim man I was made to feel very welcome by the friendly staff. I will definitely be going back at some point - highly recommended
I ordered six naans over the phone for pickup. The naans they gave were not fresh and were heated yesterdays stale naans. This is done in the month of Ramadan. I am deeply disappointed. Not sure if the buffet they offer contains freshly made food or leftovers from previous day. I wouldnt recommend them.
Wenr for iftar. No service. Waitress did not even exchange a word. Over priced food. Below average taste. Hair in my curry. Complaint to the manager ( excuse was it was from the butcher). First & Last visit. Not recommended.
Amazing food but seems they are short on staff.Well have to edit the original comment....food is still amazing but the service is unacceptable....if you are not in a rush, otherwise maybe your blood pressure will rise
Very tasty. Large portion sizes. No alcohol or BYO.
Absolutely awesome food! Never had Afghan food before as more used to eating Indian, Nepalese and Thai but so pleased I have this place a go. Ordered the chicken curry and Afghan nan (which is about 3 times the size of an Indian nan bread), absolutely wonderful taste and presentation. The hospitality of the staff and owner is outstanding, they all go the extra mile with providing free samples and starters which were equally delicious. Would highly recommend as an alternative to the usual and will defintely be coming back.
Was a good choice of restaurant to eat with family after a long day of shopping. New to the area so decided to try it out. Staff was friendly and helpful. The food was great even complementary kabulii rice to try. Excellant taste in food and the place was clean. Will recommened it for sure! And visit it again!
Yesterday Went to Afghan Restaurant Wokingham Road Reading. Food Fantastic, however, despite being quiet the service was rubbish we had to wave several times before the waiter to come over and get us what we needed, when mentioned to him he said that he didn’t care about what the customers thought of the service! Best to take the food home and get your own drinks!Businesses need to be trading appropriately so they can serve in a bona fide way in good faith so the customer doesn’t need to be right or wrong!
Great food, great prices based on quantity, 100% reccomend, staff was great and place is awesomely decorated!!
Amazing food. The service was awesome and we got free soup too! Will definitely we going back. I ordered the chicken kobeda and do piyazi and it was scrumptious. I would highly recommend this place.
There were very limited vegetarian options.what we did have was nice enough but not spectacular. I think this place is all about the meat so my review is just as a vegetarian diner. The waitress was very nice but forgetful - not sure if it was her or the kitchen - a couple of things we ordered didnt come , then stuff we didnt order did come , then had to ask twice for the missing stuff. We came for a super early dinner and were the only diners so its not like they were busy and hence it was strange that they forgot so much. Our bill was also wrong and we had to get it corrected. I think its quite a new restaurant so I guess they are still finding their feet - if the vegetarian options were increased I would try again maybe. To my knowledge, there is no menu online at this point in time so no way of knowing that veggies wouldnt be well catered for.
Food is nice but despite not being busy they seemed to be overwhelmed serving a few tables. Seems like they are understaffed or staff need training. Due to the lack of service where parts of the order were missed and given in the wrong order meant that food was incorrectly prepared. We ordered the Chapli Kebab as a starter and because it was missed they rushed cooking them and spoilt them. The same went for a few other dishes. It was obvious it had been rushed. But I believe in general the food was good. I especially enjoyed the Charsi Lamb.
This place has no need for an extravagant review. Food itself speaks loud and clear.Been there numerous times since the first time stomach liked the food and asked for more Namak Mandi and grilled platter. Would definitely recommend for food but still there is a room for an improvement in customer service.
Been there twice - absolutely fantastic service and taste is on par - unmatched in berkshire. Succulent meat, flavoursome and quantity is decent for the price. I would highly recommend this eatery for all halal meat lovers.
I was looking forward to trying out the restaurant and wasnt disappointed. Food was fantastic, the staff were friendly and provided a good service. The restaurant had a good atmosphere and modern decor. I will definitely be coming back and will recommend to family and friends.
Never tried Afghan food before but it was very very good. A real mix, they have some very tasty curries and also some incredible grills. I recommend the lamb! Will come back regularly.
Im so glad we came and have our dinner here. First time we had afghan food and I must say, it is delicious and the serving was simply generous (not that Im complaining!)The friendly waiter did kindly remind us to stick to 3 main course as a 4th wld be too much. Thank goodness for it! The lamb shank is cooked very well and literally fell off the bone and the rice is fluffy & tasty. The kebab rice too is faultless in taste. The afghan naan is crisp on the outside yet soft on the inside.High score to the chapli kebab with its moistness and subtle chilli taste. Will come back for more!
Fantastic good and generous quality and quantity. We visited it couple of weeks ago in Ramadan when open buffet was served for iftar. The food was glorious indeed. Diverse, authentic and rich. Keep up the good standard guys so we keep visiting again. Good luck
Went for buffet. Good overall. Naans were cold to start with... got refilled with hot ones towards the end, but too late really. Food was good, not excellent .. with some items missing tbh. A bit crowded and noisy..but thats reasonable for the time of the buffet.
Awesome dining experience!Family friendly atmosphere, portion sizes were generous and the food is authentic.Highly recommend this place and will definitely go again!
Avoid it. Poor quality, high prices for what you get, limited options, cash only, some menu items that had better value has been crossed. Will not go again. Shocked to see the good reviews. Most are probably planted. Terrible slow service too. I cant see it stay open long once this honeymoon period is over. Unprofessional.
Since my first visit, this has been my go-to place to eat when in the area. For those who have never tried Afghan cousine, I would describe the food as a lovely mix of influences, half way between the taste of the Middle East and that of the Subcontinent. The staff is very friendly and the prices are reasonable. Make sure to check the peak times on Google Maps before you go, as it gets very busy in the evenings. You might also consider booking a table. Also, make sure to have cash ready, as they dont accept card payments for the moment.
To start with I am local to the restaurant which is very convenient, it’s by far one the best in reading, the service and food is EXCELLENT. Portions are large and the price is very reasonable I am very delighted that I finally have a good local restaurant near me and not having to travel far. Highly recommend!
This is a true Afghan/Persian style restaurant - I have traveled all over the world and can certainly say this is authentic food according to the Afghan/ Persian cuisine - the problem nowadays with many restaurants is they drown the meat in chilli, spices etc. so you cant taste the food at all ! Here you can actually taste the food as it is meant to be with just the right balance of spices and along with the charcoal grill flavour.Just a little advice to the restaurant - if its not broken dont fix it...please keep the cooking at its perfection as it is and dont change a thing! Well done!
Friendly staff. Timely service. And the food was delicious! The mixed grill was the tastiest, most tender i’ve ever had. I cannot recommend the phenomenal food highly enough!
Amazing food, good ambiance. I wanted to have some really good grilled food and I can bet this is the best I’ve had for a long time. A must visit for all meat lovers.
My first visit to the Afghan restaurant and it was great. The food was tasty, we had the mixed grill, lamb biryani and the mutechi . The meat was soft and flavoursome. It seemed that it was cooked fresh and the staff was pleasant.I would definitely recommend. I don’t normal leave reviews but this was too good not to
I am very satisfied. The customer service is excellent, the staff is friendly and attentive, the food is brought out very swiftly. The portion sizes are very generous and we always get some freebies. We can never finish our big jug of mango lassi and they always let us take the jug home. The quality of the food is great.I will be a regular here
Excellent food . In fact the best Afghani Namak Mandi Karhai & chops , we have been there 5 times. Every time left with great satisfaction. Best Afghani food so far . I am a fussy eater ,but thoroughly enjoyed every time. Very friendly & accommodating staff & lovely atmosphere. 👍
Its a wonderful experience I had at Afghan. The authentic Asian cuisine for a fine family dine in experience. My family loved the starters especially the fusion of lamb and chicken, which was cooked perfectly. And the vegetarian aubergine was an icing on yhe cake.
I am having food just now with 8 of my family members and literally craved to post the review while eating. The food is awesome, the lamb, chicken are so soft and tender and the khamiri roti is too good . Would highly recommend this place for a family dine in experience.
Would definetly recommend. Went yesterday the food was delicious, service excellent. However a little bit expensive but I didn’t mind as it was a brilliant experience all round. Will definitely be visiting again and recommending to friends as well.
Authentic, tasty and good value for money!! Our experience of the customer service was the stark opposite of some of the other reviews here... not fine dining but that’s what give it it’s charm. Try the chicken soup... not had anything like it but super yummy :)
Excellent eating experience, I really enjoyed it..... from walking in the door and being greeted by the young waiter, seated and drink order taken, was maybe 5 minutes. Meal was served hot and excellent taste. Server/waiter was very friendly and helpful. I highly recommend it and I will defiantly be back
Terrible customer service. No Respect to customers or any customer loyalty scheme. Also guys, they say All food is handmade and fresh. It is not true! I saw frozen packets of kebabs and samosas in their freezers! Have a look for yourself!
Excellent quality of food and cooking! The lamb chops were tender and full flavoured. The karahi (we ordered the lamb Namak Mandiand it reminded me of home cooked food!We waited for 20mins for food to arrive (visited at 7pm, not too busyand the service was very jovial yet polite and prompt.Freshly cooked food takes time and tastes better than the standard restaurant food so I am happy to wait for it.Overall, impressed and we will be visiting again soon!
Awful experience.Me and my wife, are absolute foodies..and travel all around to try new foods. When I heard this restaurant had opened, I took the wife and the children out for a treat to try it. All I can say, is do not bother. I could have just thrown my money away instead - it was THAT bad! There is 0% customer service, when we first entered..my youngest slipped on a wet floor which reduced her to tears. There was no sign put up that there was a wet floor..not a great start. We then placed our order, for a chicken kri, naan, Chapli kebab and a jug of mango lassi. The lassi arrived first, my first comment was that for £6.99, the jug could have atlesst filled four glasses. Unfortunately it did not taste at all good, and was so thick, it barely poured our of the glass. I think we should have left right there and then to be honest, but we decided to stay. We was hungry! The kebab arrived..very good! For the price, and taste - top notch! I recommend going for a take away tho.The kri arrived, but it was the WRONG ONE! After telling the manager, that we had in fact ordered chicken, not lamb...he then just took the lamb away..and we then had to wait another forty mins for the chicken kri!By this point I was completely unimpressed by this extreme lack of customer service. He could have given us something complimentary to nibble on while we waited, as it was their mistake! The chicken kri arrived, we all tucked in eagerly...what a disappointment. Completely unflavoured. No spices, no salt at all. It was just chicken, tomatoes, some useless chillis and a good few spoonfuls of black seeds. For the life of me I have no idea, how I ate it. For £14 just better to stay at home guys, dont torture yourselves. After seeing the sad looks on my wife and kids, I decided that enough was enough and we was going home!On the way out the manager asked how was the food! I told him of our experience. He then proceeded to tell me it is probably because this is Afghan food, this is why we dont like it. He then accidentally charged me for the wrong kri, which did not help matters at all! My wife was very pissed off. He gave the children some free ice creams..but Im still fuming.
I second Zahra Chaudhary what she has written before. Same customer service experience I faced there when went with family. The owner was a bit rude when we asked to sit on a specific table which was free anyway. Food was late but still I would say it was acceptable. Only problem is customer service, so if you want to eat food at the cost of bad customer service this is the best restaurant.
Really unpleasant experience - floor was so dirty, service was ridiculously slow, no presentation or etiquette in serving the food (apart from one waiter who was rather pleasant), the owner/manager barely smiled and was very rude in his temperament, and they don’t accept card payment?! Having been to several restaurants in and around Reading, I would definitely go elsewhere! I know it’s a new restaurant, but good customer service should be a priority and it was anything but for us!
I visited this restaurant on its 3rd day of opening. The staff were very warm, friendly and welcoming. I ordered the lamb mix grill and afghan naan. There was a long waiting time which is understandable as they have only been open 3 days and it was busy considering it was a Monday. The food was perfect the lamb was soft and perfectly cooked. The naan was massive a good size for two people. All in all a great experience.
