Acropolis of Quirigua - Tourist attraction in Coban, Guatemala
Acropolis of Quirigua in Coban
Description
Privilege
MoreWe found this place on the way to vacation in Fronteras. Very interesting and information in both Spanish and English. Walking areas are very well maintained. Take BUG REPELLENT! If you dont remember it, go directly to the gift shop and buy some before you get started. Cool to see the huge banana plantations on the way there.
MoreJust beautiful
When we got to Quirigua Maya park it was a tropical paradise! We saw iguanas and a really cool hotspot to see macaws and toucans! The Estelas were really cool especially the ones with the Maya gods and the Big court games that the Mayans played was cool and thats where we sat down for lunch and was a really cool view! Probably a top 15 Maya city.
MoreBugs were high, but we got to camp out, enjoy the site, and even help out with clearing off a new dig site. Restrooms were exceptional and the people were very friendly and accommodating. Also our dogs loved it.
MoreRecomendado ir con guía! Pay for the guide guy. You will enjoy it more
Beautifully maintained Ruinas
Amazing place
Great historical adventure and so much to learn take a minute and come visit you wont regret it!
MoreWell preserved Mayan Site.
MoreAwesome!!
Really big city excavation very well persrved carvings. Major Mayan experience
Impressive
Muy bonito lugar. No había tenido la oportunidad de conocerlo hasta ahora. Has bastante que caminar y recorrer del sitio. Y el acceso no es tan caro.
MoreClosed until april
Magic place. A lot of history
Beautiful and well maintained place. A place to be for people who are interested in Maya history. The entrance costs 80 Quetzales (more or less 10€). In the morning theres a really quiet atmosphere, not so hot, but with very hungry Moskitos.
MoreUnique place to visit
Absolutely worth seeing. So beautiful.
Beautiful place
A real connection with the past
A must go to visit one of the few true Mayan places very well preserved
Legendary!
Somewhere to learn about maya civilization
Very well maintained. Good tour guides available.
Archeological site with impressive monuments and a great Mayan ball field. Rocks and Marble made ruins. Entrance fees range from 20 to 80 quetzales per person greater than 10 years old. A must visit on your way to Tikal, Rio Dulce, etc. With an hour you will have enough time to appreciate the site
MoreVery much smaller than Copan or Tikal, but it is interesting and has a fascinating history.
MoreBack the our humble beginings
Worth going to if you are super into the Mayan history. Visually its not overly impressive and the entry fee is a bit steep for such a small site. Wouldnt go back and wouldnt recommend to others.
MoreThis is an out of the way, off the beaten path archeological site what should not be missed. Not nearly as big as Tikal, it also differentiates itself by the large number of estellas which are lacking in Tikal. It will only take at most two hours. It is closer to what you would see Copan , Honduras and was even ruled by the son of Copans ruler 18-Rabbit, before he was beheaded by his own son. Definitely hire a guide to give you the background you would otherwise miss. Much of the around the estellas is flat and does not drain well so be prepared for damp feet. At least bring a change of socks. Tempted to go in sandals? There are tons of ants and bare feet seem to attract them. Along the entrance road you will also pass a banana plantation. Stop along side of the road and talk to the workers if they are around. Dont be surprised if they approach you and ask if you are interested in purchasing bits of broken pottery or other finds they dig up while working the banana fields next to the archaeological site since it is against the law to take archaeological items from the country.
MoreJust okay
Amazing
Super
Have to visit !!
So glad I could do this excursion. Incredible collection of large Mayan stellae in a very accessible setting. Flat terrain is accessible for mobility challenged. Excellent, knowledgeable, guide. Unlike any of the other Mayan ruins I have been to. Done with a Regent excursion from the port of Santo Tomas in Guatemala.
MoreAmazing artifacts and museum.
Amazing stela, not crowded, a bit expensive
The prehistoric Mayan city of Quirigua is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The distinctive features at Quirigua are the monumental stelae and the zoomorphic altars found in the central plaza and acropolis. The prehistoric setting for Quirigua involved placement along major trade routes that led to the development of the city. The modern setting of Quirigua is in the middle of a banana plantation. For this reason the archaeological park includes only the central plaza and acropolis. The rest of the site extends into the banana plantation property. At Quirigua stelae and altars have their own sun shades.
MoreNice place
Could use a few more signs to explain the sight. Some walking parks but you walk across grass to many of them. A very interesting archeological site though.
MoreNice experience!
Amazing Stelea
good
If you like stelae -- and REALLY like stelae - this site is a must-see; otherwise, kick back and watch the Discovery Channel do the dirty work for you and display the highlights. (Note that my review partly stems from the somewhat unjustified overpriced entry fee for foreigners at a whopping 400% the local charge (which is more decently - and fairly - priced).)
MoreArea de relax
Loved visiting all the Mayan ruins in Guatemala. Excellent national monument.
Amazing sight.
