Achaia Clauss - Winery in Pyrgos, Greece
Beautiful castle and tasting room. The tour of the wine cellar is worth it, especially the barrels manufacturing process. Its then possible to test 4 to 6 wines.Sweet mavrodaphne wines are underrated and a good value for money.
Very rich culture of this winery. Took more expensive wine tasting option for 32€ and we did not regret it. Tasted a lot more wines than chose on their website. Tour guide was also fluent in english, answered all of our questions and took us to journey through history of Achaia Clauss. Worth it.
A nice winery with a museum, you can visit the house of Clauss. The staff speaks English and loves their wine !
Absolutely the most important place to visit in Patra. It is a winery since 1861. Has been founded by the Bavarian Gustav Clauss and its speciality is the sweet red wine Mavrodaphne. It is open every day till 17.00, the entrance goes from 18 euros till 32 euros, depends on the type of wine taste you want to do, and there is also a guided tour of the cellars. You will taste the most famous wines that are produced, and you will have the chance also to buy them. You seriously dont wanna miss it!!! The place is incredible, it is like an old castle, the wines are the best quality and the tour is super interesting, not even mentioning that the view from here is breathtaking. Ps. Many personalities came here to visit, for example Princess Sissi came here to be cured by a wine therapy.
The "cheap tour" is 18 euros per person and doesnt show you the cellars. (Their most important assetThe other one is 35 which seems a little steep for a tour around a winery... Tasting without a tour is not possible. The rest of the domain is nice though.
This was my favourite experience in Patras. The tour was informative, the setting was beautiful, and the wine was delicious.
Probably a must see if you are in the region. Beautiful location, beautiful and historical buildings and obviously excellent wine.
Beautiful place. Would definitely recommend a visit. Old winery with a view.
Very beautiful place. Astonishing view and very good wine
I dare to say that no trip to Patra in Greece is complete without a visit to Achaia Clauss Vineyard and Castle. The Vineyard surroundings and the Castle are majestic overlooking Patra and the sea. I suggest you make an appointment for both a tour of the cellars, and on the way down to the imperial cellar you will get a glimpse on the history of their cooperage. The imperial cellar has carved barrels back from the start with over a century old mavrodaphne wine. If you are lucky the wine tasting will take place in the Belle view cellar where you can see all their bottled wines, if not you will have a fantastic view of it from the floor of the bar and you can enjoy the view from the balcony. Fantastic wine and great staff, so dont miss it!
Nice place to be there
An absolute must for any wine lover let alone for a habitant of Patra. Its a piece of history one should become familiar with. Without any hesitation I suggest going in an organized tour. The tours had stopped due to covid-19 restrictions but they have resumed recently.
Nice place , the best wine in greece , affordable prices
The girls that works at the bar I think her name is Aspasia, she is the sweetest creature and so helpful. The place is perfect for a sunny day and the wine is amazing!
Achaia Clauss Winery, nice wines, especially the Mavrodaphne which is both a black wine grape indigenous to area, and the sweet, fortified wine first produced from it by Gustav Clauss in around 1850. There is a free tour of the winery, then a wine tasting, it was a nice see the winery and hear the history, so thank you. Unique experience in the city of Patras! Not to be missed
Amazing winery, and some great history behind it. Highly recommend the tour, and you wont be disappointed with the views. The buildings and property as well as the view of Patras were amazing. The wine was great too, wish they had a tasting that is more traditional in the USA where you can sample all of the wines, but at least you could get wine by the glass. Prices of the bottles were really good and the ambiance makes this one if our favorite wineries weve visited. Try the Mavrodpahne if you like sweet reds (or even if you dont! Its a cross between a sweet red and a port, and its delicious.
The last time I took a group of tourists here
Today, I was invited to this absolutely amazing boutique vineyard as a private tour to experience this unique family vineyard which produces some of the worlds best wines. Most definitely we will come back for a more detailed tour experience.
Excellent
Very nice place
This magical place nestled in a mountains with a gorgeous view of Patras is a must see. This place screams of history! Take the tour to learn all about the signature wine "Mavrodaphne" and how its produced. Maria and Eleni were terrific hosts and tour guides. The tour ends with a wine tasting which was more than enough to convince me to buy multiple bottles of this magnificent dessert wine.
Tje guide was very nice and explained everything very clearly,
Excellent 👍👍👍
It was a nice experience!!
Very nice experience of a really old winery. The view of patras from the Claus winery is very nice. Very impressive barrels some of them have 150 year old wine! You can smell Mavrodafni walking around the barrels
The wine is rather medium, but the place is beautiful.
A beautiful and historical place and a fun experience if you follow the tour of the cellars. The local wine is sweet red so don’t expect exquisite dry reds, but nonetheless fans of wine should be excited with the history visible on the barrels and by the views.
Oh, my parents took me there and I still remember the taste and smell of this wonderful red wine that I tasted! And its been over 25 years!
Top!
The best place in city Patra
Very nice place and they offer free guided tours. Free parking. You can see how they used to make wine in the old times. The place was built in 1861. Nowadays they have barrels with Mavrodaphni wine (local type). You can taste wine with 2 euro per glass and buy different types of wine. Dont forget to buy some Mavrodaphni or other wine. Some of them are rare. You can buy also a bottle of Mavrodaphni bottled in 1873 with 1850 euro.
We had a Very interesting free tour with an excellent tour guid. She had a lot of knowledge about the history of the place and about the wines. The winery is very beautiful with great views of the area and the wines we tasted were delicious. Don’t miss this attraction when visiting this area.
One of the coolest buildings i have ever been in. Great tour of the place and great wine. Must see if you are in town
Really nice place.
English guide is amazing. Very beautiful tour of the oldest winery in Greece.
The tour was realy great and the wine is the best, everybody was nice with us so we left with a lot of bottle ;)
Excellent natural place and one of oldest wineries in Europe. People there can tell about historic memories of visitors like princess Sissy, royals, artists, actors, show you barrels full of navrodaphne since 1870. An atmospheric wine testing hall and excellent wines to test and buy. A must see
Truly special place, rich history, great wines!
The true story about wines castle
Fantastic place! Great wines - especially Gustav Clauss and Mavrodaphne
Beautiful scenery, good wines, small museum of old equipment, guided tours. Produced mavrodafni is exquisite!
Hand carved oak barrels with beautiful art. Interesting history, especially during WW2. Tour guide speaks English, knowledgeable. Some say this is the oldest in Greece, guess some homework is to be done to verify that claim.
Very interesting place to visit, the second oldest company in Greece, best wines to taste and buy. Would toyally recommend.
Great place to visit..
Super place! Must see!
Good wines, good prices, interesting tour.
The Best Winery
The best winery in the world! So many rare wines and super friendly staff <3
This is a very lovely place to visit when in Patras. The staff are extremely friendly and happy to tell you all about the interesting history of the vineyard. There is a short tour where you can see how and where they make the wine, and you can see some of the most historic barrels of wine in the world. You can also try all the wines and buy a few bottles to take home with you.PS. It would make a wonderful wedding and party venue - plenty of space & beautiful surroundings.
