Itäinen Rantakatu 4-6, 20700 Turku, Finland, Turku
Contemporary art & history museum housed in a former palace with underground archaeological ruins.
Absolutely loved this place. Best museum in Turku! The café is amazing and the staff are friendly and helpful.I Will be coming back here again.
One of the best museums in Finland. Modern art and the history of Finland and Turku in the same museum.
Somewhat confusing museum (with both art and history, with different tickets - or combined), so make sure you know what you want to visit.
While at Turku Night of Arts @taiteidenyo_tku , I discovered some participatory museum practices at @aboavetusarsnova . They made archeological site and historical part of the museum a truly exciting and entertaining experience! Also multisensory and multimedia approach was the best, as well as the inclusion of on-hand experience with writing on clay Tablets and building a bucket👏🏻 I of course also appreciated the feedback wall! They also had a great bone identifying simulator, where you put one of the provided objects on a scanner, and you a presented with an explanatory video from an archeologist researcher!#patricipatorymuseum #archeology #historicalmuseum #finland #turuntaiteidenyöContemporary part presented exhibition of Kustaa Saksi with very impressive (both in scale and skilland majestic fractal tapestry artworks. Another hall upstairs exhibited some of the Finnish modernist artists(mostly abstract expressionismbut I didn’t have the time to properly explore it, as 2 hours wasn’t enough to explore the whole museum despite museum worker’s opinion😅What I’m also very greatful for is meeting and observing VideoKaffee art collective and their sound-air artwork or more accurate would be to describe it as an art machine :)
Only went to the archaeological part of the museum. It was an interesting insight though short, but for €8 thats not the end of the world. It felt a bit unstructured however in its layout, I really feel that there could have been better guidance of the story they were trying to tell.
Aboa Vetus with the historical remains was an amazing place for our two young children on a wet day. Lots of things for them to play with and exciting places to explore. Loved it. Would skip the upstairs Ars Nova with kids as thats just a more normal modern art gallery. Nice, but not engaging for them. Brilliant cafe with a very nice buffet lunch for a good price.
Very nice museums but small
The downstairs exhibition was really interesting and educational. We learned a lot of useful information in the historical section, and I particularly enjoyed looking at the reconstructed animal skeletons. There were also a lot of beautiful tapestries displayed in the art section. Unfortunately the upstairs part of the museum was rather disappointing. Most of the modern art was something, which my 4-year-old students could easily produce without much help.
Very good museum, a lot of funs and games for children. But modern art is so hard for my understanding🙈
Active archeological site downstairs, modern art above, great cafe :)
One of the basic museums you need to visit while staying in Turku.
After the visit to the Aboa museums, I just felt very complacent and more enlightened. It was a very joyous experience. Must see in Turku!
Really cool and interesting ruins. wasnt too interested in the modern art section, but it was still pretty nice nevertheless. Ruins are in good condition, and you can learn interesting stuff about Turkus history there.
The place is amazing, I did not get the tour in the museum, but did visit the shop has super cute little things & gifts. The good part is that they have discounted rates for students to check the museum. And they have a super nice cafe next to it. What I loved the most the glass floor that allows you to see the water and alleys underneath the museum
A lot of stones in dark rooms. Lots of Finnish history in nice presentations. Ars nova, pretencious art for artsies, well worth it if youre artsy.
One of my favourite museums in town. The new Osmo Rauhala exhibition was a blast! It deeply connected with my biologist nature.I also visited the archelogist exhibition again, and I enjoyed that they added more interactivity in the museum.I would suggest interactive displays instead of normal screens in some parts of the museum. The slideshow were either going too fast or too slow for me enjoy them.
Nice and cosy contemporary art museum
I went here for the jazz brunch. Nice atmosphere and good food. Always interesting exhibitions too.
A nice museum to visit with nice old objects. The way its preserved old foundations is interesting and fun. The modern art section wasnt really my thing. Would be 5 stars if they would have added even more historical objects but I do still recommend a visit.
The Mouseum part is super cute and exquisite
one of the most innovative museums i have been in. You can try out what people were doing back then yourself surrounded by stories and artifacts. Ability to see how these artifacts are discovered on site with an existing dig is also another advantage for those who are interested in history and archeology.
I live the Finnish sense of history and belonging - well displayed I this museum...
Interesting museum! I dont know about arts but archeology was very well organized.Archeologistis at yard excavations were professionals, I suppose at their work but also in marketing and customer service!
Very nice museum. Not very big. Well built and interesting exhibition. Also, nice museum shop with interesting and affordable articles.
Very interesting museum with old authentic ruins from old Turku
Interesting and charming art museum in an impressive old villa. The underground historical museum is very interesting and educational while also a great place for kids to play.
Fantastic place to visit! Lots of information. Perfect place to visit for a few hours. Would definitely return again. The ruins were fascinating and amazing to look at. Hands on activities for both old and young. Can go inside of an old cellar that was very well preserved. 5/5 would recommend to others and bring friends.
A combined museum of archeological findings on ancient Turku, Rettig family mansion and a collection of modern art.
Disappointed with this museum. Not much to offer. Not worth a visit for the price in my opinion
The modern art bit is very small, the medieval ruins are interesting but they dont really have that much to look at. Worth a visit but its just OK
Chapel inside the "ruins" is on its own worth the visit. Small but imbued with a sense of the past. Entrance was 10€.
Ive always wanted to come to the museum, from the outside this one looks very interesting. I was extremely disappointed in the art portion of the museum though. The basement which had various items and information about Turkus history, as well as some of the wall ruins of the old city was a lot more interesting and enjoyable, but ultimately the all in all experience turned out very flat for me.
Realy interesting. My kid (10ywas excited.
Innovatively presented archeological research of mediaeval Turku townhouses, special focus to childrens’ view. Good view how life was during 12th-16th centuries. Nice to visit, will not take long. Temporary artist exhibitions are a good bonus.
Nice museum. We found it a bit too long. Despite of the longer, the information was quite interresting.
This museum covers both a view of the ancient city of Turku, as some very inspiring modern art collections. That and the beautiful castle + great restaurant makes your visit more than worth.
A cozy little museum with some ruins of old Turku as well as modern art. Interesting place and even a good cafe. Museum shop is full of interesting, if not a tiny bit over prized stuff that has to do with modern arts and Turku. You should definitely consider visiting.
The historical exhibition (Aboa Vetusis good, but the Ars Nova now has just one exhibition in the first floor, and the other in the second floor is only pictures and texts about the history of the Palace that the museum was before(and I was expecting some modern art. Also all the balconies were closed. So maybe is not the best time of the year to visit the museum
Beautiful modern and contemporary Art museum, which has also an archeological area. You can literally walk among the buildings of the 14th and 15th century. Upstairs you can find the museum with many different paintings and artworks. The exposition involve famous painting from Picasso to Andy Warhol and also same Finnish art. There could be also an area for temporary expansion.
This place is two museums in one! Downstairs, there are medieval ruins and exhibits on historic Finland, and upstairs youll find a modern art gallery, and a river runs right through the building, which makes for an amazing café in between the two museum areas! The medieval ruins were re-discovered during excavations in 1995 and include a church and residential buildings with lots of information about the time period.Upstairs in the contemporary art gallery, exhibitions and installations are constantly changing. This ones well worth a visit!
The permanent exhibition changes from the museum’s own wide variety of art with the changing exhibitions, thus making both sides always worth seeing. The restaurant has one of the best lunches in the city, and if you take the full lunch, including a very filling salad table and Mbakery’s always interesting cakes you won’t leave hungry even if you came in so.
Good place to learn about the past of Turku and Finland.Plenty of affordable mementos from their shop. There is a chic coffee shop with glass floors where portions of the middle ages ruins can be seen.
Must see in Turku. Proper combination of art and history.
Fantastic museum and cafe, great place to learn about every day life in medieval Turku
So interesting and a fascinating way to depict history. It was an amazing experience, most of the staff was friendly, and the gift shop was adorable. The exhibit "Bony Tales" was a definite highlight. I recommend you take a guided tour, but walking around can be a great way to spend an afternoon.
If you like history, its a nice place to visit. Plenty of items and other cool things to look at. Im a bit of history buff so I spent like 2 hours just reading the all the things and looking at all the things. I didnt even get to see all of it, because I had to leave early.
Nice mix of modern art and archeology. They are still digging out old buildings, bones etc. Lots of information about Turkus history presented in a way thats easy and fun to follow.
Good place to know the history of Turku. I spend whole afternoon here.
Lovely coffee shop. Modern interior design with friendly staff.
This museum has two parts: a historical one, where archaeological findings are presented, concerning life in Turku in the past; and an arts collection, with permanent and temporary exhibits. A good place to learn history and to admire paintings, collages, sculptures and watch films. The museum has a nice souvenir shop and a coffee shop serving brunch.
