Modern, 2-story eatery with late-night hours & a sizable menu of Hong Kong-inspired favorites.
ABC Bakery and Cafe in San Mateo
Description
Privilege
We come here almost weekly after training. Genuine HK style food at reasonable price. Best of all they open till 11.
MoreLove their hk style noodle, try this if you are bored of Ramen ~ btw service here has improved, cheers ~
MoreBest food/price restaurant in San Mateo downtown, n our favorite dish Hainan chicken
MorePopped in for a very late lunch after a matinee at The Curve, five adults and a toddler. It is located very close to the theatre area of Leicester. Great value, delicious veggie and pesce food! My lo ordered off menu and they couldnt have been more accommodating. Food was yummy in a classic, comforting way.
MoreBest breakfast ever in the whole world! A bit pricey but sooo worth it! You will LOVE it! We had the pancakes with poached eggs and potatoes and OJ. Staff is awesome. My favorite place in Napa.
MoreAs for lunch it has lost its food quality for Hong Kong style Cafe... There is not many choices around the area on this type of food but it was quite empty for lunch and there is a good reason
MoreFood is good but the service is always bad 🙅🏻♀️ had to ask for a cup of water few time..... still didn’t happen. We end up getting it ourselves. Had to ask to take our order many time. SMH
MoreFood & Hongkong Style sweet Tea are just as Good even better than in Hongkong. I was born and raised in Hongkong.
MoreHong Kong food place. The best feature of this restaurant is a kids playroom. Kudos for that!
MoreI wish I could give 0! The food was off! They might have served us leftover for breakfast! Cold tea, burnt coffee, bad customer service...
MoreHong Kong style cafe with a deep menu and long hours tight in the middle of downtown San Mateo. Online ordering is buggy but you can order online or phone in if youre in a hurry. Morning specials, afternoon specials, and late night specials available as well!
MoreVery similar to eating where there are a lot of of Chinese nationals and the language is not your own.At times there is waiting for your food, but it has ALWAYS been a pleasure and good.Remember that this restaurant is a jewel because you get good Chinese food cooked by Chinese personnel doing a good job.I enjoy it every time I have gone there, little faulty and all! Never have hesitated to patronize the stablishment, so thats good 👍!Update...Returned to the same great flavor, same great food! 😃CONGEE w /vinegar n a bit of soy sauce. Next day; dumpling noodle soup n cabbage something... 👍
MoreGreat variety of Hong Kong style bistro / street food. Reasonable pricing. Service can be slow but has recently improved. Its our "go-to" places if we need some cheap eats Hong Kong style. The baked casserole rice dish is my favorite. You can choose two style in the same casserole if you cannot make up your mind which one to get. I normally order half/half Portuguese style chicken and baked pork chop.
MoreThis place was great 10 years ago... Even 3 years ago it was okay... NOW, its horrible. Its time for the ownership to change? The food is not good. It may be HK style, but dont expect HK quality.
More??? No congee, wontons, noodles, or soup: availability of food depends on if they have chefs on staffBUT open late night, great specials, bomb chicken wings, fun/comfy ambience
MoreTheir food quality was getting worse! I ordered macaroni with egg and sausages. The sausages were tasteless and the skin of the sausages were ripped off so it looked like sponges! Actually, when you eat the sausages, you really feel that you are chewing sponges! Also, the milk tea is hell too sweet! It would be better if they provide some condense milk and let people adjust themselves.
MoreThere are way better places to eat in the area other than ABC. Baked ox tongue spagetti was a puddle of pre cooked ketchup splattered on a few thin slices of lengua, sitting on a bed of boiled pasta. Should have stayed home and cooked.
MoreAlways good for that late evening Hong Kong style snacks. Spam and egg sandwich, rice plate, noodle dishes. HK style milk tea or ice lemon tea. Prices are very reasonable.
MoreA budget Hong Kong style restaurant that brought back many simple yet happy memories. I havent been back to ABC for a long time probably at least seven years. My friends and I used to come here frequently when we were still in our twenties. Besides Dennys, this was the other restaurant that still open in late hour in our area when we wanted some wee hours snacks. But over the years, the restaurant chain has struggled and one by one ABC has shuttered. The one in San Mateo is the only one left. The food itself was nothing special. They offer the same noodle soup, fry rice, and chow mein for over ten years.
MoreFood is decent, but price is higher than a typical Hong Kong style restaurant. Be prepared for understaff and long wait for service.
MoreThis is now the only ABC Cafe left after the other 2 closed for various reasons. Sadly this last location now seems to be suffering as well. The wait staff is friendly and always running around to get things done, but when the place is full and there are only 2 of them, theres no way they can handle the entire place. Sometimes you may have to wait 10-15 mins just to order, and they also seem to have a hard time getting people to work in the kitchen. Its not unusual to go there in the morning only to be told that theres no one in the kitchen yet and you cant get any food.
MoreTry the lemon tea :everything tasted really good. They stay open till 1145pm everyday.
MoreService slow and no management. Waiters run around on their own ( Chinese fire drill ??Food is just very OK but not much.Looks like the owners just do not care. May be they made enough money already.
MoreThe worst possible experience possible. Gave our item to the wrong table and argued that its our fault for not speaking up??? What? And asked for water 5 times and was consistently told that they would bring water after bringing out the food? Then they bring out one dish at a time even though there is a queue of food to be brought out....Im not one to usually question service at these diners but even the low bar I had coming in was miserably missed.TLDR: DO NOT COME HERE, YOU WILL BE MISERABLE.
MoreBe careful coming here their not that clean also, if you getting a delivery check your items I came to pick up 10 items they only tried to give me one and the food was already paid for. NOT COOL. Also beware of the lady with the ponytail she has a bad attitude horrible customer service ice.
MoreThis place used to be pretty good with the Hong-Kong style soup noodles and the teriyaki chicken Pan fry new though but I guess theyre cutting back on staff and the cooking is not So fresh as before.
MoreQuite disappointed that theyre not flexible with their menu items. I asked to replace the beef with chicken as i dont eat beef and was told they cant do that. A bit pricey for the quality of the EFun noodle that I ordered. The Indonesian mapo tofu was good though.
MoreAuthentic Chinese food that is consistently very good. My favorites are the bone marrow rice, curry beef and tendon chow fun, and the wonton noodle soup.
MoreIf youre going to eat at an ABC Cafe, DO NOT eat at the one in San Mateo !! I’ve been frequenting the ABC’s in San Francisco on Noriega St and in Chinatown on Clay St. I always order the “Baked Beef with Egg over Rice”, a dish with Beef, mixed vegetables and onions smothered in a tomato based sauce that is baked over rice and topped with an over easy egg. Very flavorful dish if you eat at the Noriega and Clay locations, but NOT the case in San Mateo. I ordered the dish in San Mateo and what came to the table was, beef, sauce and rice with an over hard egg. Took a few bites into it, and it tasted bland, and had no texture to the dish due to the lack of mixed vegetables and sliced onions. I wondered if maybe they just stopped making it that way. I left disappointed, and kept thinking I had to correct my taste. The very next day I decided to visit the Noriega location and order the same thing. Well to my relief, they STILL served it the original way ! Good ol’ Noriega ABC !! 👍🏽 Dont know if San Mateo is just cheap and decided not to put the vegetables in, or if they forgot, or maybe thought I never ordered it and wouldn’t miss it, but I WON’T be returning to that location EVER again ! 👎🏽 So don’t go to San Mateo for they might shortcut other dishes there too. On top of all that, the wait staff was very inattentive and bland like the food.
MoreI really like the wanton noodle! Wanton is big and juicy. They give too much noodle though so Id ask for half next time. The Hainan chicken rice was only ok. Service is fast and minimal. Will be coming back.
MoreThe food here tastes OK, but it is a great place for hanging out with friends. Spacious, affordable and open late.
MoreThe place was really cheap, service was good (though she didnt understand usThe porridge was big; however, more ingredients could have been added. The signature fried rice roll was okay. Good hk style tea tho!
MoreReasonable price, ordinary food, nothing strikes me about the food
passable at best. the breakfast offerings have little flavor and waitstaff was inattentive with a side of "tbh i dont care about this job anymore" and a dash of "ugh, why are you making me have to do my job?" i believe the attack by flying fork during clean up was unintentional but you never know.
MoreThe closest description I can give is cantonese diner food. Its not expensive, simple, filling and comforting. Dont expect foo foo Chinese food. Just good simple satisfying meals. I have never waited for a table here. Been going here for about 10 years. My favorite thing on their menu is the salt and pepper wings. Its a bit westernized but for the most part the food is very much like a food stall in Hong Kong.
MoreIf there could be no stars i would. Cuatomer service was rude. Everything i wanted to order they said were out but didnt appear to be the reason. Order chicken wing appitizer and my meal came out first. Wings didnt came out till both of me and my wife was finnished eating. I didnt even want to take appitizer home cause all take out boxes were in a open shelf close to a very dirty floor will..pic will be posted..over all food was good
MoreI gave this place a second shot and still not worth it at all. The service for starters is absolutely terrible.... unbelievably slow! Good thing we were not in a rush. What bothered me the most is that hot beverages were served in PLASTIC! Everything was PLASTIC! So cheap. Even the spoon in the sugar container was plastic! I couldnt believe it.The food was ok.... Oh and I got a honey lemon tea and it was literally hot water in a plastic cup with a slice of lemon already in the water and honey sitting on the bottom. Ugh.
MoreThis is an interesting Chinese restaurant. It definitely gives you a legit street food vibe, which means the food is actually greasy and unhealthy , but definitely satisfies your taste buds to an extent. Service is average, overall come here for the different experience and wide variety of food options. But the actual food and service was just average.
MoreI call this the authentic Hong Kong cafe experience!! Reasonable price, great quality of food. Been Eating at this place 8 times a week, no complains!
MoreGood comfort Hong Kong food. Everything you remember from the old 茶餐廳 you can order here.Update: the wonton noodle here is gross. The food in general had been deteriorating for a while. The place is getting a little old.Its open late so if you want to have a late night snack this is pretty much the only option anywhere in San Mateo.
MoreThe food is delicious and great for the price. My top picks are usually the cantonese noodle dishes and curry beef but you cant really go wrong with anything on the menu. Great for late night eats!
MoreCompare to other HK style restaurant around Bay Area, the food is only so-so. They make it up by opening late and providing fast service.
MoreConsistently meh food that leaves you underwhelmed and wishing you chose another restaurant on Third St. Price is fine and service is fine. I wouldnt recommend this place, though, since there are better restaurants around.
MoreBeen there for the last 10 years, almost every single weekend. Its not addictive. Its the style, the food, the milk tea that fixes my nostalgia. You cant find the same aroma elsewhere. They are the real deal.By the way, where is the Hong Kong Pageant owner? Hardly see her anymore.
MoreOne of my favourite places to go for a late dinner. The restaurant is large and roomy with a huge screen, it serves a good variety of Hong Kong comfort food with big portions.Servers are not overly enthusiastic as you commonly expect from such eat and go places.
MoreWent for a late night snack at 11:30 pm (they close at 12:00). We tried the 鹽酥雞 (Taiwanese popcorn chickenand it was very dry and heavily breaded. We ordered some drinks (lemon tea, HK-style milk tea, Horlicksand these were all excellent.
MoreWent here twice and most of the dishes are very nice. The portions are quite big and service is good. However soup noodles are quite salty.
MoreThis restaurant offers basic chinese cafe food which is pretty good after a long night. The greatest advantage of the restaurant is its late closing time which appeals to those who stay out. I usually get the baked pork chop rice which is pretty standard.
MoreCame for 下午茶, which on the weekdays starts at 2pm (but 3pm for the weekends). Under $7 for a plate rice, which is cheaper than their usual lunch prices. Fairly authentic Hong Kong milk tea, and 粟米斑腩飯 was as good as any of these fast-food HK type places as can serve. The 铁板飯 here dont actually come out on a sizzling platter, and the porkchop one I ordered wasnt hot or flavorful.
MoreI had a wanton noodle and a "baked pork chop rice". The noodle soup has so much alkaline, it was horrible. The wanton and the pork chop both have so much MSG, my mouth tingled (not in a good waysoon after I started eating.Mistaking MSG with taste. Shame.
