Hip, cozy bistro serving small & large Mediterranean plates, beer & wine at butcher-block tables.
went for a splurge anniversary dinner that we typically dont do and just for this reason. presentation and setting were great but for $100 on 3 plates & tip I expect to be blown away. food was good but not that level.
All of the food was delicious, our server was friendly and informative, and the whole experience was wonderful. Im a college student, and I think Im going to come back here for my graduation dinner.
Love this place! Everything was amazing. The food the service five ⭐️ stars. Our server Alexis was very friendly and attentive! Will be back soon. Highly recommend making reservations
Very much enjoyed their small plates / tapas style menu. Excellent bartender and friendly staff. I will dine there again.
Amazing food and very friendly staff. They have a great selection of whiskey and bourbon, some of which is not on the menu, so ask if youre interested. I enjoyed some amazing gnocchi with lamb and mushrooms. I definitely recommend that. I stopped in again about 4 years later and it is still a wonderful restaurant. I had the egg yolk ravioli and was not disappointed!
Decided to head here for our anniversary dinner. I am a fan of Alimentari, so I was stoked to check it out. This was my first time going after being in Madison for almost a decade!Cocktails were my favorite thing about the experience. We got the "Relationship Goals" and the "Corpse Ryeviver" cocktails. The RG was the first mezcal cocktail that didnt choke you with smoke! So darn good. So big ups to the bar staff. As far as food, we ate:BeetsCasencelliPheasant ConfitSteelhead TroutI enjoyed the Trout and Beets the most and my partner was a fan of the Casencelli. The Pheasant and beet greens side were too salty. We left feeling full. Service was excellent! Josh, our server, answered all of my questions and was a good sport about my bad jokes.I would 100% come back here to sit at the bar and try the charcuterie next.
Ive stopped in here twice and probably wont return. The good: Fresh ingredients, romantic ambience, cocktails were interesting (though a little sweet), the dishes were creative and interesting. The bad: Seasoning- Our tomato dish and Trout didnt have a spec of salt on it. Some components of the trout dish were seasoned though to varingly levels. The cook on the fish was over done. Albumen was seaping out. The size of vegetables in the salad were so big we had to cut them with a spoon.Overall this dishes were fun and fresh but the inconsistent cook, seasoning and presentation really ruined it for us.
Absolutely incredible. Probably one of the best meals Ive had in Madison. Will definitely be going back
First time dining with a good friend who also has never been. A wonderful menu to share as well a beautiful vibe. Will for sure return! Loveliest time!
I think this restaurant is great. The plating is awesome on some dishes, the price is affordable (excluding the pastasand the flavor profiles were delicious. The best thing we had was definitely the lamb belly. My only complaint was that the pasta seemed a tad overpriced. My issue with stuffed pasta is you never really get more than 8 and if youre splitting, well that doesnt work well. Otherwise the service was great and Id come back.@dietproof
Wonderful drinks and a casual, intimate setting. So glad to have this local gem nearby.
Great food adventure, love this place
Extremely well-executed, creative cuisine. The charcuterie board, focaccia, risotto, and dessert were exceptional.
Food is not bad but given the price we were incredibly disappointed. Started with a charcuterie board which had way too much meat. Ended up taking the extra meat home because we could not eat all of it. Not enough cheese or bread to eat it with. New we got two kinds of pasta. Both were fine but incredibly overpriced and nothing to write home about. Waiter was very bad. Incredibly cold and off putting. Drink selection was good.I was very disappointed and would not recommend that anyone go here. The food is bland, the staff is rude, and whole experience was overpriced. It seems like they changed their menu at some point and are banking off of their old reputation. Clearly something went wrong with the menu update.
After freins recommendations before Covid, went yesterday to celebrate my birthday and was disappointed!!The only thing I enjoyed were the cocktails Amazingand the serviceThe food portion was tiny and overpriced , bug not tasty.Ordered the charcuterie , you can tell it is not quality and barely any pickles there, just few mini cucumber.Raviolono was super salty ( told the waitress and her answer was ok!!!!Foie gras came on a rubbery thing that hard to chew.Overall nothing was really good .I won’t be going again.
UPDATE: I give Pig in a Fur Coat props for what they did for my birthday in 2021. I went back in April 2022, and I was crushed to see the menu totally changed. The only item I recognized and wanted to order was my fave, the Raviolo. My husband ordered a small app, I ordered the Raviolo and we left. We didnt order any actual dinner. Sadly, I dont think I will go back unless the menu changes (and hopefully goes back to what it was or maybe better).2021 Review: My favorite dish in all of Madison was the Yolk Filled Raviolo. Every year on my birthday, I visited Pig in a Fur Coat and got my favorite dish. In 2020, my birthday was during the peak of the pandemic. No Raviolo for me. Sad. This year (before dine-in options were available), my husband went back and forth with the owner of Pig and Cut Coat to ask (begfor them to make the Raviolo just for me. The owner and my husband made the necessary arrangements to guarantee a fabulous birthday. This photo was taken at the Willy St Park prior to me inhaling this entirely.
Everything was delicious, both food and drinks. Wonderful experience from start to finish. Do yourself a favor and add the focaccia to your meal. Great place for a date night.
A great Madison experience! A cool mash up of Italian and French cuisine. We loved every second. So many great dishes!
Had dinner here before a show. The waitress did a great job explaining the menu and gave approximate dish sizes so wed know how much food we were getting. Everything we had was amazing and the service couldnt have been better. Would definitely return here.
Allie and Josh made sitting at a bar such a fun experience that a table opened up and I was hesitant to move. As always the food was amazing, but the cocktails also make it a wonderful experience.
A Pig In A Fur Coat used to be one of our favorite restaurants. Even though we live on the opposite side of town, we were willing to make the long drive to enjoy their fabulous and unique dishes. We have always especially enjoyed their duck fat fries with garlic aioli. A Pig In A Fur Coat was one of the only restaurants in town that actually did fries right, using real fat instead of processed soybean oil!!!After a two-year hiatus on dining out due to the pandemic, we headed over there today, eager to taste those delicious fries and aioli. Imagine our surprise when we found this dish absent from the menu, along with just about every plate we had ever enjoyed there. No more meatballs. No more charcuterie. When we asked the waiter, he told us that the restaurant had replaced their deep fryer with a pasta boiler.I can understand a restaurant wanting to change their menu on occasion, but we certainly wont be going back there. There are a hundred restaurants in Madison that serve exciting and tasty pasta dishes, but almost none that serve real food made with real fat. A Pig In A Fur Coat has reinvented themselves to be just like all the rest, apparently following the latest trends. In the process, they have discarded the one aspect that made them unique.
Honestly having eaten all over the country at some pretty great places, I’d still put these guys in my top five dollar for dollar. Truly a Wisconsin gem. Ignore all the negative reviews from the penny-pinchers that want to be treated like gods for spending $15 on a tapas sized plate. The food is outstanding and the prices are in range for the level of quality you are getting.
The bartenders are great. The food is outstanding. If you show up early you wont need reservations but it gets busy around 7 oclock so call ahead. Great winelist and outstanding cocktails.
I decided to stop here last minute before a show and man am I glad I did. They were fully booked in the dining room but they offer the full menu at the bar. The bartenders were great to talk to and the drink menu was unique and delicious ( we tried most of their signature drinks). The food was perfect and I ended up ordering more plates besides my main dish after tasting the first one. I will definitely be returning next time Im in Madison. Cheers!
Amazing food, excellent service, impressive wine list. Enjoyed the tar tar and the raviolo among other things. The raviolo and short rib were our favorites.
Ive been in the F&B industry for over 15 years and have been to many excellent restaurants in Madison. This is one of, if not my favorite restaurants in Madison. Great service, amazing food, and cozy/relaxed atmosphere. I highly recommend making a reservation and giving them a try!
Wow. Wow. Wow. This was such an awesome experience. From the moment that Juan greeted up to the final plate coming out of the kitchen, everything was spot on. With an ever-changing menu, this small plates dining experience is new each time. Bring an adventurous pallette and be willing to step outside of your comfort zone to try new combinations you would never think of as your own. If you share, the portions will comfortably allow four people to try each dish. Like the portions, the space is on the smaller side so reservations are strongly recommended.
Spectacular food with a cool vibe. The service was as good as the food. Great wine/spirit options. Our server Josh was very knowledgeable and helpful sharing recommendations. the Pork chop was worth the wait according to my husband and the raviolis were absolutely delicious - I tried both the egg yolk and lamb. We will definitely add this to our list of must visits for future trips to Madison.
Comfy and delicious. Off the path menu for Wisconsin but flavorful and incorporated a ton of grassroots flavors from beets to celery. Not scared to to not have meat as a main dish this restaurant had unique cocktails and all around atmosphere that could keep you coming back. The flavor and preparation of each dish was meticulous and presentation was striking. Rabbit, octopus, all pastas, even the beets, cooked well and delicious. Recommend bringing a group as its a pass the plate style but even a couple can order a few dishes and be wholly satisfied. I didnt have anything in wouldnt eat again and to me thats 5 stars.
What a wonderful time my girlfriend and I had at A Pig in A Fur Coat! What more could you ask for in a dining experience, really? A cozy, unpretentious atmosphere, bubbly service, good wine, and great food all made for a wonderful evening.I have seen a few reviews that may suggest that the food may be over-thought or even convoluted, but let me assure you that the adventure that my girlfriend and I had shared was exactly the opposite of that. Each dish was strategically designed with fresh and aromatic flavors. Well balanced, typical ingredients (minus a few exceptionswere constructed in a way that made each experience as exciting as the next.Without a doubt the highlight of the evening was just that: The Experience. The tried and true concept of creating a shared experience through food is perfectly executed here at A Pig in a Fur Coat. Food is meant to be shared. Food is meant to be enjoyed with people you love, or even someone youve just met. In either case:"You learn a lot about someone when you share a meal together." -A.B.
Had a wonderful visit here for dinner. This is a small plates restaurant where sharing is encouraged. The staff is awesome, very knowledgeable and friendly. They do an excellent job of walking you through the menu and giving recommendations. The menu changes seasonally and they try hard to utilize local and regional flavors/ingredients. The dishes are rich, flavorful and beautifully presented! We particularly enjoyed the fall harvest salad and the corzetti with escargot and goat cheese!
Good service, unique menu with assortment of flavors and foods. Wouldn’t put it in the top of foodie restaurants I have been, but preparations were all solid and would definitely come back! The foie gras mousse was delicious, the corzetti pasta was great, ribeye had great flavor, and the dark chocolate budino dessert was fantastic.
Great atmosphere and superb service. The Pork Belly Agnolotti was absolutely delicious, and the Rhubarb cheesecake was such a delight, the almond crumble on top was so good, Im salivating just thinking about it. Will definitely be back for more. Keep up the good work. My compliments to the chef and the bartender who made the wonderful Black Manhattans. Cheers.
As always an absolute delight to dine at Pig in a Fur Coat. Quality in food, service, and ambiance.
We arrived when it opened so it was nice and quiet compared to other reviews. Service was fairly quick. We ordered 2 apps and large plates. I have to say it was a lot of food. The pork chop and wagyu ribeye did not disappoint at all. Couldnt finish them so we packed them to go. Overall, its worth checking out if you dont mind spending a bit more.
Very happy to stumble upon this place. I had dinner at the bar. Bartender helped pair a good red wine with me food. I really dont know what to say, just look at those pictures and go try this place for yourself. It was very good. The restaurant is cozy and good for a quiet dinner with good company. Loved it.
The food here tastes good when its shared. If you eat a large plate by yourself, chances are that you wouldnt wanna continue eating after a while. I would recommend getting duck fat fries and poutine.
Best Tapas restaurant in Madison, and its really not even close. Inventive drinks, amazing food, and great staff keeps me coming back!!
We would hope back for sure! If I had any criticism it would be very small dining space BUT trust me we still enjoyed our food!!
UPDATE BELOW.This is one of my favorite restaurants in Madison. Make sure to try the duck fat fries. So delicious. **Be warned, this place is small and fills up fast. If you dont make a reservation you may have to wait quite awhile to get seated - but the food is totally worth it.**3.26.19 - They no longer serve standard (commercialsoda flavors. I miss being able to order a Coke with my meal.
Delicious and creative food. Its great that a place like this can inspire a city in the midwest to be eager to explore creative flavor. Everything I got here was delicious!I got the revolver cocktail to balance out the heavy bolognese sauce in the tavatelli. I followed it up with the lamb carpaccio and have plenty to eat. I wasnt that hungry to begin with either. Everything was incredible and had wonderful flavor combinations.
People always say nothing is perfect. If there is one, it must be there. This little restaurant is the best I have ever visited in the USA. Although there are many Michelin-starred restaurant in the US, but this is what I feel should called a real restaurant. The food are just perfect, waitresses and waiters are super friendly, the atmosphere is elegant and warm, people all enjoying their food. Can’t wait to come here again!
Great food. Everything I ate was delicious! Highly recommend the ravioli, Parisian gnocchi, and Arancini.
Easily my favorite restaurant in Madison for an intimate date night. Amazing food, cozy atmosphere, great service. Its a nice change of pace from the typical around-the-square restaurants. The Wagyu Ribeye is a MUST. Same with the octopus. Highly recommend A Pig in a Fur Coat!
Amazing dinner! They accommodated us at 4:30 without a reservation. The plates were rich in flavour and excellent in proportion. My party of four shared three mains and four appetizer-sized dishes, with no snack-sized. When one of my party didnt like the beverage he was served, a substitute was provided without issue. Great hospitality. Great atmosphere. Great food. I cant wait to return!
We were so happy with the service, food, location, and portion size. All the boxes were ticked for a lovely experience. The staff went out of their way to make a lovely experience for my mothers birthday, and listened to the special requests I left when making a reservation. Our favorite dishes were the beet salad and olive mix. Delightful!
My wife and I have driven up from Chicago for the sole purpose of eating at this restaurant two times now and I am already daydreaming of the next trip already. Absolutely love this place and its great drinks, amazing food and wonderful service. We always get one of their unique and creative cocktails before ordering way too much food for two people - there are just too many things that sound great on the menu. We love their duck fat fries but they had switched (temporarily?to beef fat when we went this past weekend, still good but I hope they switch back by the time we visit again. The servers and hostesses have always been super welcoming and great at their jobs, it definitely turns a great dinner into an exceptional dining experience. The atmosphere is laid back and very cozy, great for couples even if you get seated at one of the communal tables. Out of all the hundreds of restaurants Ive dined at, A Pig In a Fur Coat is my favorite, hands down.
Amazing food, interesting and comfortable atmosphere and an educated staff gets this little gem a 5 star rating from me ! Fun sharing concept makes for a varied meal that was well thought out by the chef. The interesting flavors still linger in my memory! I cant wait to go again.
Really enjoyed all the preparations, especially the Poutine. Reasonably priced for the kind of food, and the craftsmanship that goes into the preparation. The menu is small, but I would definitely like to try out some other preparations out there when I stop by next. There will be wait if you go during peak dining hours. Highly recommended. ☺️👍
Came here for my birthday and got their tasting menu. One of the best meals Ive ever had, the staff clearly cares about the food they serve, as well as the drinks that go with it. For example, when we first entered, we walked in upon one of the waiters doing research on their wine selection so he could better inform diners on where their drinks came from.If you want to dine out in style or celebrate a special occasion, I strongly recommend A Pig in A Fur Coat.
