Reconstructed 1800s fort & Nazi place of execution, with exhibits & memorials about the Holocaust.
Lots of sad history but it has to be shown what horrible things were done
Great value for money - tickets are 6 euro and you get full history of the forts, the tragedys that happened there etc. Tip: do not spend all your time on the first exhibitions because theres tons to see! Also go to the roof, its worth the view. Toilets on site but bring your own drink since theres nothing to be obtained on site.
Impressive monument and a site with an extremely interesting history. Definitely worth a visit if you are touring Lithuania. It is recommended to plan at least 1 hour to allow enough time to explore both the exterior and interior areas.
Definitely recommend to go with a guide during the weekend.Sad and interesting history as the same time
Impressive space, wonderful museum and so well thought through! It is so cheap to enter, you get to see and try so many things. The timeline through the story of the fort is shown in so much detail, the rooms depict a variety of aspects through different, partly interactive media. Highly reccomend to visit!!
History behind this place is mind blowing. Definitely worth a visit.
Very intresting place from outside, and even more from inside. We went on our own, without excursion, but I woukd suggest taking excursion if you want to see everything. Some parts of museum is restricted and can only be entered with guide. There are a lot of information about Kaunas fortification, different wars which happened in Lithuania, next part of museum is about Nacis and Soviet ocupations and all bad things which happened on thar time.Recommend.
A dreadful place to visit but worth it to read some history and see atrocities committed by one nation to multiple others.
A really emotional place....Sad moments coming from the past, especially if you have visited also concentration camp in Auschwitz....
Place offer nice view and many interesting facts about WW2 and what happend here. You can walk around / inside. place also offer Big parking so for your campers could be great free spot to stay a night. The monument is giant and very photo friendly.
Great monument sculptures and old fort. History is preserved here.
This place is a must when visit Kaunas. The area is large and clean. From the top of the fort there is a nice view over the city. The memorial is very significant an amazing structure.
A bizar piece of 20th century of history concentrated at this location.Eerie, macabre and fascinating.Humans worst intentions, capability and eagerness to execute them are shown here. The difference of events exposed may have more depth and is far from complete. For foreign visitors of the experience there is a lot of context missing due to lack of information in international translations. An audio tour in multiple languages would help to understand the impact of the history of this fort a whole lot better.
A very interesting and thought-provoking museum about such a dark part of history. A must-see if you are in Kaunas!
We had a tour of the 9th Fort, in English by Olga. She was amazing. Had so much information to share and let us have enough time checking things out and not rushing us. It was a great experience learning about what happened there and walking through the different passage ways.
This place is full of history. Reminded me of our visit to Auschwitz. The museum is very informative and worth a visit. Inexpensive too. The monument is amazing to see. Highly recommend. We got a Bolt here.
Excellent. More than impressive. An overwhelming experience to visit and be on the grounds and premises of this Sacred place, with deep and intense energy.
Place with a lot of history and a lot of reflection. Iadvise the visit.
High exposure, guides are amazing, inexpensive tickets. This place is forced to rethink about morality, humanity and respect. This is not only a place which talks about hurting people, but also about people who risked their lives to save innocent people. About 50,000 people were shot in the fort.
About the darkest period of Lithuanian history. If already in Kaunas then def worth to visit
You can walk around the place even if the musem is closed. It takes at least 30 min to see everything just from the outside - and it’s nice to go after hours - less crowded and you get to see it anyway. The area is large, clean and cared for. From the top of the fort (it looks like a little hillthere is a nice view over the city, though it’s a very sad place, knowing that tens of thousands souls ceased the exist here, and the remains lay under your feet.P.S. Dogs are not allowed at all, and there are no trash bins on the site.
Just amazing. An outdoor park that does not allow dogs. A nice sign to greet us when we arrived.
Really enjoyed it, very informative and much bigger than I thought. There was loads of information about things that I have never even heard about before.
Amazing to see and appreciate what has happened in places like this, well worth the visit! However the staff just follow you around and then shout at you for pressing the buttons on the interactive displays, let people see what happened on their own!
Good place to visit, if youre interrested in the dark side of world war 2, the fortresses of world war one and older. Strange how one place, can be build and used to so man diffrent things.
The best and must-visit place in Kaunas. This place reminds us of the dark times of the Holocaust, how Jewish people struggled for survival, and never gave up hope until the last moment. The actual clothes which they wore and their own graffiti on the prison walls will bring chills to anyone who can put himself/herself in their shoes.Apart from Jewish history, this place is a source of information about Lithuanian history and its struggle for independence against the Soviet rule. The memorial at the end can be visited directly without a fee for those who arent interested in seeing the prisons / reading the history. But I strongly recommend taking time and visiting all the spots within the museum. It is cheap for students (1.5 euros per head).
Very interesting place with a very interesting history. Really gets your thoughts going. Remember to buy tickets down on the parking lot. Otherwise you have to go up again...
Unique brutalism style statues, highest place above sea level in Kaunas, wide spaces, tons of places for picnic or relaxation.
Not much to see. The monument is interesting but you have to pay to go into the fort. Free and clean toilets are available.
An interesting place with lots of history. Takes about 2-3 hours to walk through the whole place.
Beautiful place with a haunting history . Well worth a visit.
Interesting place large grounds and free if you do not want to visit the museum however this is where the interesting information is.
Definitely worth seeing. A lot of history. The place is big and it takes quite a while to walk trough all the rooms. There are 2 buildings - first with amazing glass work, art pieces and photos; second is the place where you can see the cells, prisoners things and have a look at how they lived, where they slept, etc.
Astonishing monument. Not far from the city of Kaunas. Recommended!!!
A must-visit place, a huge fortress built of concrete, with rooms, rooms with chilling documentation of the horrors of the people who were imprisoned there.
Its a museum complex with museum, fort, a mass execution site and a Holocaust Memorial for the Jews. Its a little bit outside the city and we paid around €6 for Bolt taxi. There is also a bus, need to walk around 10mins to the bus stop, not that frequent though. Museum was closed on the day we went, but the views of the memorial from the top of the fort were splendid. One can easily walk on the grass covered top of the fort.
A very large complex comprising three themes/area. The museum documents the Soviet takeovers of Lithuania. Very informative with many stories and photos. Very traditional in that there is no interactive/multimedia content. The fort itself includes two parts (1the history of the fort and its construction, and (2the use of the fort and prison during WW2. The fort history and construction was not well presented. The timelines were mixed and and supplementary materials difficult to follow. The stories about the prison/fort during WW2 was well presented and fascinating.
Historical place. 3€ entrance. Lots to see inside buildings.
A great place to visit for some historical indulgence, a very impressive monument and interesting fort. Its quite an emotionally moving spot due to the war crimes committed here. The snow added some visual beauty aswell. This along with the war museum in town is a great way to capture the history of Kaunas past and not so distant past.
Very interestingBut also very strange place to be must have been a horrible place to be a prisoner
Nice interesting place, complicated connection with public transport, be careful of the back connection especially so u wont stuck at the bus stop, very beautiful view and deep experience
Its the monument that seizes your eye, its different and a serves right as a memorial, the impression it made tell a story, although this monument is out of place (like a sudden difference in entire Kaunasit still weights in terms of being a symbol.. I went there during the winter, it had a luminance presence. You almost feel overwhelming, almost. Its a great place for people to chill out few times, kids played their sled here and there, good family hangout to have fun with their kids. I will try to return back during the summer.. just to feel the atmosphere.
Good place to visit with family or friends. Good place to take a walk, pay respect or just hang out. Beautiful nature and huge monument for war victims which worth to see, because of his unique design.
The place must to see. We also took and english speaking guide who took us to extra part of the building. Trough small tunells. Every single part of ninth fort takes your breath away. A lot of sad history behind.
Just amazing! Amazing history and amazing place. Please everyone needs to pass by. Is a must! 😍
Absolutely loved it. So beautiful yet so sad and informative. If you believe in ghosts 100% go here and walk around the tunnel gates. You instantly feel 20° colder. My friend and I had shorts and t-shirts on but in certain spots we could actually see our breath it was so cold! Very interesting. The monument was gorgeous.
Interesting place to visit. Rich is history information, exhibits. Has a nice fort feeling. However as for the fort not much of original fort tunnel experience left. Only few rooms across tqo floors in one block.Worth visiting for those interested in the past!
A good museum where can stay 2 to 3 hours.
A must visit. Some incredible true stories of survivors from all sides, and gives an insight into the dark side of history. Highly recommended.
I would give an extra star if i could. Really great place! Though hire a guide is a must and you get access to additional underground tunnels.
