14 Henrietta Street, Dublin - Museum in Cill Chainnigh, Ireland
Fantastic tour for anyone interested in the social history of Dublin during the tenement housing situation. Our tour guide Frank was informative and you watch several short films throughout the tour too. There are seats in different rooms, which is good for those who need a rest in between as its a 75 minute tour through different floors.
I had visited Dublin before but had never visited this museum / building. From the 3 days sight seeing in the city this was the highlight of the trip. Our guide was amazing, she had a wealth of experience and a passion for the place. This was more than a job to her ( sadly I have forgotten her name but I think it began with a G), many stories (good and bad), the group were captivated, I felt myself fighting back the tears on numerous occasions.
This time we were just outside as part of Open House Festival. We had a brief talk about the history and architecture of the building then sang a few songs. One of the best museums in Dublin, its a living history sort of thing and has had some memorable theatrical and musical events. Not to be missed.
Absolutely wonderful tour of an incredible building.Funny, emotional, entertaining and absolutely fascinating.Pat is a lovely man and an excellent guide. We’ll be sure to always recommend a visit to people on our own walking tours!
We had a wonderful tour with Gillian. The house is full of stories and history brought alive by her enthusiasm and genuine interest in the house and the area. Every member of staff we met was friendly and helpful to me and the kids. Highly recommend!
Fascinating museum of the buildings history and tenement life. The guided tour by Sean was superb. If youre interested in the social history of Dublin, this is unmissable.
Very interesting and a little long tour of the museum - Learned a lot about Historical Dublin and especially that specific location and area, the guide was knowledgeable and friendly, everything was great! Only minus would be that there are too many videos and it can be a bit of a long tour, but that is probably because Im not so much into museums and history - But people who are will absolutely be delighted by the tour.
An absolutely excellent experience going back and forward in time as you pass from one room to another. Our guide Declan met us at reception before leading us all up the grand staircase, designed to wow your posh guests in Georgian times! After getting the house rules, you get to watch a video detailing the original owner Viscount Molesworth. Our guide Declan did an excellent job of setting the scene, it was easy to imagine the aristocrats swanning around! From here you enter the bedchambers and watch a video projected onto a bed. It must be said the AV work in this museum is all excellent. From here you change eras, and descend to the basement to view a tenement apartment. The contrast could not be more stark, from rich aristocrats to a cold dark cellar apartment. Again Declan really set the scene and the mood as we watched a video projected on the wall and learned about the 17 families that lived in 14 Henrietta Street at its peak! The trip ends in a fully decorated/furnished apartment, donated by some of the last tennants. An incredible experience that had some of the guests genuinely moved as they remembered growing up around Dominick Street. 10 out of 10 thank you Declan for an excellent afternoon 💪
This was by far our favorite museum in Dublin. Our tour guide Jason was incredible. Definitely a recommended stop!
Just had the best tour of any I’ve done in Dublin City. Jason was our tour guide and he was engaging, charismatic and walked us through the tough history of number 14. I would recommend this tour to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of the inner city psyche and story of Dublin. 10/10
Excellent tour by Gillian. Really informative and Gillian added some lovely personal touches. The staff were really accommodating and even squeezed us into a private tour when all the regular ones were sold out! Highly recommended
If you have the opportunity to experience only ONE thing in Dublin, let it be the guided tour at Henrietta Street 14! Just WAUW! Our guide was wonderful and funny. The tour focuses on telling the story of the houses decline from rich town house for one family to tenement building housing up to 100 people at a time. The story is moving and engaging. Im definitely taking the tour again of I ever come back to Dublin!
Great tour through 14 Henrietta street. Was expecting a story about the wealthy people, whom lived here.. it was… for 5 minutes. Gillian, our tour guide took us to the time of poor tenants lived in this house as an example for lots of people living in poor conditions.Gillian let us relive the poor times in a very vivid way and we had some visitors in the tour who lived in that time or their family members, made it very special!Gillian (or Mary😉thank you so much for your very emotional story about the house!
Wow! Wow! Wow! Had the best day. I was born and raised in Dublin and ashamed to say I didnt know half the history of this wonderful place. Gillian is passionate in story telling it gave me chills! Just go, no matter where youre from .
Extremely well-done museum right in the heart of Dublin. I was brought here by a local friend and didnt really know what to expect. 14 Henrietta Street is part of the newer generation of museums that rely less on piles of artifacts, and more about telling an engaging story. Our fantastic tour guide Gus took us on an hour and a half trip through the buildings history, including a number of well-produced videos, and added his own knowledge of the places historical context. He engaged extremely well with the audience, and was friendly throughout. Highly recommend a stop here for an underappreciated part of Dublins history!
Did the walking tour this week on a beautiful sunny day with Gus as our tour guide. He gave a great tour and some wonderful insights into the area and how it elvolved over time. Have liked in Dublin all my life and only got to see some of these streets for the first time. Dublin is a wonderful city and sometimes you do not see whats right under your nose.Thank you Gus part of what makes Dublin great.
An excellent tour exploring the history of tenement houses in Dublin. Our tour guide Justine was brilliant. A great story teller. One hundred percent recommend this tour.
A wonderful experience. Brought back many memories. Our guide Pat was very informative and entertaining. He was an excellent guide. Will highly recommend it to all our friends Regards Michael and Kathryn. Cork City.
100% the best attraction in Dublin. The guide was super knowledgeable and friendly. The tour is immersive, with audio visual components. Do not miss this!Tickets must be booked in advance.
Absolute must for All Dubliner s . What a step back in time . Beautifully restored & spot on with attention to details. Frank our tour guide was fantastic & very informative. I’d definitely go again .
We spent a pleasurable hour and a half on Tour with Gus!! A fountain of knowledge and enthusiasm. Bitter sweet history, brought so many familiar feelings, sights, recognition of my past familys history and good fortune to have had jobs and careers. Dublin has a mixed history of fortunes won and lost. 14 Henrietta Street is a super museum and a must see, especially for the Irish, not just Dubliners!!🍀
Walked in without a reservation and got a couple of spaces on the next tour. Be sure to check the web site to verify there are spots available at the time you want and you can buy the tickets at the web site on a lap top. I was unable to fill out the purchase form on a small cell phone screen. The tour covers the construction as a mansion to its transition to a tenement and its eventual closure as a slum. The slum and 1970s apartments are fully recreated. The tour leader was unable to answer many of our questions which was unfortunate.
Very enjoyable and interesting tour. Gillian our guide on the day was so knowledgeable, captivating and made our experience so much more. She was a real Dub.... made it a great day. Highly recommend. Always great to get to know more about our history of Dublin.
Exciting historical tour through the history of a neighbourhood and house. An absolute recommendation for those interested in history.Declan is a fantastic tour guide!
Such a special place - visited here with my daughter on our heritage trip to Dublin. Pat the guide was knowledgeable and funny whilst being able to convey the terrible sadness and living conditions that the people of this house - and Dublin endured.Pat is clearly passionate about not only the museum but the people and history of Dublin. It is a haunting place and in my personal opinion an absolute must see. My daughter and I were so impressed that we are going to return and show my other children the museum. Thank you for sharing this beautiful house and your knowledge.
Excellent and informative for all ages. Myself and C (11yrs oldboth really enjoyed it. Gillian was an knowledgeable and engaging tour guide. Its fantastic to see how the house has been restored and reflects the different periods through which it has existed.
Absolute must see if you wish to understand Dublin over the last few hundred years. Excellently tour guided by Gillian. Would highly recommend.
Interesting tour. You get to know the city through a relatable issue, housing. We all need a place to stay. Fascinating to learn the history through one house through time. Its focus is on its many later inhabitants, rather than the early ones.
Superb visit. A really great experience. A great visual presentation. Do not miss this whether you are a visitor or if you are from Dublin. How lucky are we to live in a city that has come such a long way in a short space of time
One of the best tours Ive been in Dublin!!!Impressive work is done here to preserve history, the good and beautiful but also the bad and ugly. Very important. The stuff is great. The tour guide is very very good, he spoke in a very passionate way, you can feel he is involved in the preservation work and that he cares about what he is talking!
This tour is a must. Through the 300 year history of the building the tour by Gillian captured the stories of the people who have been living there. The story of the building also sheds light on the history of Dublin and at times Ireland. The story of the house also gives a voice to the many people who will not be remembered by history but they did matter. Remarkably people who were born and lived in this house and are still alive have even contributed to aspects if the tour which only enriches the experience more.
Shaun was as engaging as he was informative as our guide of 14 Henrietta St. His interspersal of anecdotes and personal reflections really brought the history of this Georgian mansion turned tenement slum to life. All of us Aussies really enjoyed it - MIL 83 yo, teenage boys 14 and 16 and me 49. Book in advance to avoid disappointment! We walked all the way there yesterday only to be turned away but so glad we went back. If walking, take the smaller roads to appreciate the architectural history.
Absolutely Fantastic museum, go visit if you can. It explains a Dublin not known to many - even the Irish - and it adds to the complexity of this island. Not to forget - Pat is a gem of a guide, his understanding, presentation and depth of knowledge of the house (and area and subjectis second to none. Thank you!
I cant recommend this museum enough, the tour is great with people who really know what they are talking about and they love questions too. I also took the Georgian North Dublin tour which was fantastic. Do both, they are amazing!
I went into this museum tour not really knowing what to expect. I was initially drawn into the historic preservation aspect, so I bought a ticket and went. This was without a doubt one of the best tours I have done in Dublin. Initially, the tour begins discussing the wealthy individuals who first built and owned the house—I was hoping it wouldn’t just be about them. And it wasn’t. Soon after, the tour shifted to discussing broader Irish history and its context on Henrietta Street, explaining how the building was used as a tenement house after the 1870s and showcasing the lives and struggles of the people who have lived here. The tour utilizes video and oral histories as well, which make it more engaging. This is a fantastic display of public history, and I would recommend a visit to it for everyone interested in history, old homes, or if you just need something to do for 2 hours. Highly recommend.
Such a wonderfully preserved piece of history. Absolutely fascinating and the tour was excellent Jason the presenter was full of knowledge and enthusiasm some humour and cant thank him enough
Brilliant experience, well worth the € 10 fee.So much history ,from its origins to now. The last room you visit is incredible and reminded me of my childhood as I have a personal connection to 14 Henrietta Street. Also our guide was excellent.
Im not much of history, so I wasnt sure whether I would enjoy Henrietta. I loved the history of the house and the peculiar way in which its told. Absolutely recommend this experience in Dublin.
A fantastic tour which gave a real insight into both sides No.14 Henrietta Street, the salubrious & the slums. Our tour was guided by Frank who was absolutely brilliant from start to finish.
A must-see for anyone interested in understanding the history of Dublin and its people. Shows the living conditions in the slums of Dublin in the early to mid 1900s - in houses previously owned by the rich in the then 2nd city of the British empire.
Absolutely fantastic visit 😀 very engaging with lots of interesting facts really takes you back
Incredible immersive experience of life in Dublin trough times. This was the first (of manytouristy thing we did when my family came for a visit...our wonderful tour guide Gillian was an absolute delight and her passion to tell these peoples stories inspired us all during our stay. A must see if you wish to understand Dublin.
The place is beautiful, it tells the story and shows how it was to live in one of them houses. The tour guide was really cool and funny, he explained everything really well. Would recommend!
Well worth a visit. Tour guide Pat brought the group back to Georgian and tenement times in this old building. Hard to believe its recent history. Nice touch where Pat has come to meet many of the children who lived here in person, or the relatives of the children in the photos. The basement depicted the harsh times...cold and dark so bring a jacket, but there was a nostalgic feel to it too...not all doom and gloom. The last room was the icing on the cake with a more recent living quarters and all the bits and bobs donated from past tenants giving it a real special touch. Incidentally, I made an incorrect booking (an Irish speaking session only where 2/3 of us had no Irishand contacted them on the same morning of the booking thinking Id lose my money but no, they sorted me out straight away and my booking was changed with no problems at all. I was really grateful for that.
Really enjoyed our tour of 14 Henrietta Street. The building itself has been very well restored, and the use of videos, artefacts and real stories made for a fascinating and moving experience. Our tour guide Celina was excellent also!
I think that might have been one of my favorite museum I’ve been to in Dublin. Really cool to see the evolution of the building through time and learn about how it was to live there. It was like a little time travel experience. The videos really add to the experience and Jason was a really good guide too. We had a really good time :)
A great experience and Jason was a wonderful guide. He is real Dub and it made it an authentic experience. I would recommend anyone to do this tour. Its a real step back in time and gives you an appreciation for a time when Dublin was so different.
Super window into the social history of Dublin. Fantastic restoration, simple, yet sophisticated presentation. Excellent guide Sam.
I can highly recommend both the house tour as well as the walking tour for anybody with an interest in Dublins history. In fact, they complement each other to such a degree that one must do both! Dont know how I missed this place whilst preparing to my trip to the city, but I am so happy to have heard about it once I was there!
The history of #14 is the history of modern Ireland. We had an amazing tour with Gus yesterday afternoon. Five kids, aged 7-11 were kept captivated throughout. One of best in Ireland! Keep a eye out for the history of Reckitts blue and Red raddle too :)
